World of Warcraft movie gets Moon director onboard

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 31 Januari 2013 | 23.25

Moon and Source Code director Duncan Jones has confirmed he will direct the upcoming movie for Blizzard's Warcraft franchise.

Legendary Pictures' adaptation of Blizzard's world-conquering RTS and MMO series will be a live-action movie with a budget "north of $100 million" , according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Shooting for Warcraft is expected to start later this year for an intended 2015 release. The eight-year-old MMO World of Warcraft, which still boasts 9.1 million monthly subscribers, saw its fourth expansion, Mists of Pandaria, released last year.

"So the gauntlet was thrown down ages ago: Can you make a proper MOVIE of a video game. Ive always said its possible. Got to DO it now! ;)" wrote Jones on Twitter last night.

The script for Warcraft --which is being kept "under wraps" according to The Hollywood Reporter--has been penned by Charles Leavitt, who has previously worked on The Express, Blood Diamond and K-PAX.

Spider-Man director Sam Raimi had originally been down to direct the film, but had to leave the project in favour of the upcoming Oz the Great and Powerful.

Battlefield 4 to be shown off by EA in the next three months

EA has teased that it will show off Battlefield 4 within "about 90 days" alongside signalling that it's actively developing its main franchises for the next generation of consoles.

During EA's Q3 financial call last night, EA game label president Frank Gibeau mentioned Battlefield 4 as a response to questions about how the publisher intends to avoid another instance of last year's disappointing Medal of Honor: Warfighter. "We have a Battlefield title coming next year," he said, "but we're not in a position right now to talk about our development plans and our SKU plan long term."

"That will come in about 90 days when we get to show you some Battlefield stuff," added Gibeau, hinting that Battlefield 4 could be unveiled around April.

EA's next financial year runs from April 2013 to March 2014, so it's most likely that Battlefield 4 would see a release in the same October timeframe that Battlefield 3 and Medal of Honor previously occupied.

Battlefield 3 and the Frostbite 2.0 engine were publicly unveiled during the Game Developers Conference in March 2011.

Later in the earnings call, EA CEO John Riccitiello suggested that it was already working on next-gen installments for Battlefield and FIFA. "We're also investing Gen4 console technologies and content," he said. "We've signaled that we're working on the next editions of our two biggest franchises in Battlefield and FIFA."

"We look forward to discussing these programs and many others with you when we provide our fiscal 14 guidance in May," added Riccitello.

EA has already announced that owners of Medal of Honor: Warfighter will get early access to the Battlefield 4 beta.

Elsewhere in EA's earnings call was the news that the Medal of Honor franchise has been effectively retired and that Insomniac's upcoming co-op shooter Fuse has been delayed.

BioShock Infinite - City in the Sky Gameplay Trailer

@Nikosnik123 There is so much wrong this this comment.

Besides your borderline incomprehensible grammar/sentence structure you suddenly begin to compare DMC to Bioshock? Wtf are you on about? Bioshock is not 'broken up into pieces' it is a, mostly, linear shooter.

Also you begin by saying this looks 'mediocre' and then says '8' would be a good rating. Outta 10? what the fuck? 8 is a 'great' rating with a few significant problems. You're everything that is wrong with gamers.

- you think games with a score less than 9.5 = bad

- you have no comprehension of grammar

- you compare incomparable games

- you cannot from a proper argument

If so many people weren't like you then perhaps the mainstream could take gamers seriously.

The Hive mind behind the Ong Bak video game

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 30 Januari 2013 | 23.25

We speak to Thai-based developer Studio Hive about its upcoming game based on the Thai martial arts action series.

Martial arts film fans received a surprise last year when an action game based on the Ong Bak franchise was officially unveiled. Called Ong Bak Tri, the game is a mix of 2D-platforming and God of War-style action combat, and is scheduled to arrive on PCs first. The upcoming title has also received the blessing of the original film's director, Prachya Pinkaew, and one of its main actors, Tony Jaa.

GameSpot Asia had a chat with a representative from Studio Hive--the Thailand-based studio involved with the project--about how they're trying to get big-screen action into the living room.

What drew your team to work on this project in the first place?

Studio Hive: We started this Ong Bak project about five to six years ago already, way before Studio Hive was founded. The first Ong Bak film was a huge international hit that was made entirely in Thailand and I think it is perfect for a video game. When our studio finally established an internal game development team, we approached the brand owner Sahamongkol Films for their permission.

Based on the official site, Studio Hive is highlighted as an animation and a concept art-creating company. How much of a challenge has it been to make and code video games?

This project is definitely a great challenge for everyone in our team--we are enjoying every day. In this dimension it is a whole new playing field and we are working really hard with the support of the publisher Immanitas Entertainment to make sure our game is worth the wait.

Which game studios have you contributed your artwork to so far, before doing Ong Bak?

Our creative director Skan Srisuwan was the lead character designer for Square-Enix's Front Mission Evolved during his time in Singapore. We worked on World of Warcraft card games. Other notable mentions would be Star Wars: Book of Sith and Starhawk. Lately we have been doing a lot of mobile card games as they require really high quality digital illustrations.

Were there any other game design ideas you thought of before settling for the 2D action genre? If yes, tell us more about them. Also, why weren't they implemented?

There are three main reasons for deciding to make Ong Bak Tri into a 2.5D side-scrolling game. The first reason is the market. This genre has a lot of fans over all platforms, and the feedback we got so far confirms this.

Second: this kind of game is a perfect fit with regards to the strength and capacity of our team. We don't have hundreds of people working on this game so naturally at this point we cannot do an MMORPG or a sandbox action game.

The third reason is that all of us at Studio Hive are old school hardcore gamers. We grew up playing games like Final Fight and Double Dragon. These games were really cool and are still giving us a lot of inspiration and we want to have that also with Ong Bak Tri.

How much did the film's original director and actor contribute to the upcoming game? Could you elaborate on how they worked alongside Studio Hive?

I consider us very lucky to work with two amazing directors on this project: Thossaporn Poonart, the director for Ong Bak Tri and Prachya Pinkaew, the director of the original Ong Bak film. We really appreciate the level of creative freedom they have given us. We've have a lot of meetings with them to guarantee this game will be an authentic addition to the Ong Bak world.

One very important contributor for both this project and the Ong Bak universe is Panna Rittikrai. He is a legendary action choreographer and is often known as the co-creator of Ong Bak. Ajarn Panna is designing action sequences for the game.

Tony Jaa lent us his name and likeness for the game and we will announce more on his involvement later. I am sure that the fans will be delighted with the authentic "Ong Bak" feel in the game.

Like the second and third movie, the game is set in ancient times. Why not a contemporary setting like in the first film?

This game will be a prequel to a new movie from the Ong Bak series that is scheduled for this year. We cannot give out too many details on this upcoming movie, but the license owner Sahamongkol Films will do so soon.

What will this game do differently from other 2D action-platformers like Outland and the Shank series?

We tried to create our combo system in a way that players will have more options to have "fun" with enemies. All Ong Bak films are famous for their awesome action scenes, and this will also be a main element of our game.

Which platforms will this game be released on? Also, when will it be out and how much?

The game is designed for PC, consoles, and mobile platforms. The first release platform will be PC, followed by mobile. We are currently working very hard to get the game ready but we also want to offer the best possible gaming experience. The game is in the final development stages now; we'll announce a release date shortly.

Falling in Love with Lara: Tomb Raider I

I'm not the first to say, but seriously learn the controls. They offer an ENTIRE tutorial map in the main title screen to teach you every control method and the tricks to each control; it is Lara's mansion. You learn the trick to back stepping before jumping, the water controls, and the basics needed to play.

You jumped into a game from 96 and expected Uncharted. Yeah, the game has not aged well... but you certainly took no personal attempt to learn or gauge the controls and simply became impatient after only a few minutes in. You're playing it like you would a Ratchet and Clank platformer. I guess, sorry the game expected a bit more out of its player?

There comes a point where the majority of your own frustration becomes your own fault, part of which being you're using a keyboard. I'm certainly not going to try and play a game like Starcraft without learning a thing and using a gamepad over a keyboard, then cry in frustration after a few minutes because the games has, magically, not decided to work with my hamfisted attempt to play it.

Johnny, I love you bro, but somewhere in your brain you must have known you were playing this purposefully blind for a laugh. Which I can appreciate, but seriously this game is so much easier than the hell you put yourself through haha

Then again, I'm biased and will play the first Tomb Raider over any of its sequels/remakes because I think it has a better atmosphere. When you really get into it, TR1 has actually a pretty damn good survival horror vibe going for it that most games today have a difficult time grasping. Anyone who played as far in as the Colosseum knows what I mean.

Game is seriously good and a classic... but yeah, the first level is a pretty bad intro. Just sad that you'll never play it beyond that =(

Nintendo slices Wii U sales forecast but expects to return to profit

Lower than expected sales of the Wii U has caused Nintendo to cut sales forecasts of the fledgling console by 27 percent for its current financial year, down to 4 million units sold from its initial expectation of 5.5 million.

The gaming giant expects to make a net profit of ¥14 billion ($2.2 billion) for its current financial year--which ends in March 2013--as opposed to the ¥43 billion ($6.9 billion) loss it suffered last year.

Nintendo also revised its sales forecasts for the Wii, 3DS and DS, with the 3DS sales expected to reach 15 million by the end of March.

The company also expects to suffer a loss on its operating income, but expects an overall profit thanks to an advantageous exchange rate due to the currently weak yen.

3.06 million Wii U consoles and 11.69 million Wii U games have been sold worldwide since since the hardware's launch last November, with 1.32 million going to North America, 900,000 to Europe and 830,000 to Japan.

The most popular Wii U games, perhaps unsurprisingly, were Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros. U, with 2.33 million and 2.01 million sold respectively.

Pokemon Black and White 2 managed to notch up 7.63 million sales worldwide since its Japanese launch in June, so the publisher be likely be particularly keen to see how the new, 3DS-exclusive Pokemon X and Y fares when it's launched globally in October 2013.

Last week Nintendo announced a new Zelda title and a new 3D Mario to bolster the Wii U's lineup.

World of Tanks studio acquires F.E.A.R. 3 dev

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Selasa, 29 Januari 2013 | 23.25

World of Tanks studio Wargaming today announced it had acquired F.E.A.R. 3 developer Day 1 Studios for $20 million and is putting the team to task on an unannounced console title. The company will be rebranded Wargaming West.

Wargaming is developer of numerous PC massively multiplayer online games, including World of Tanks, World of Warships, and World of Warplanes.

This marks Wargaming's first step effort in the console space. Platforms for the company's new console game were not announced, nor was a timetable for its release.

Wargaming West currently has a handful of open positions, including calls for an IT Administrator, a producer, and multiple part-time quality assurance staffers.

Day 1 was founded in 2001 by ex-FASA Interactive veteran Denny Thorley and Microsoft Game Studios' TJ Wagner. Out of the gate, the studio scored a hit with 2002's MechAssault for the original Xbox. After a MechAssault follow-up in 2004, the studio created the original property Fracture for LucasArts and then took over for Monolith on Warner Bros. Interactive's F.E.A.R. 3.

Industry has profited at expense of children, says CA senator

California senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) has apologized for telling gamers to "quiet down" in a recent interview, but also again criticized the game industry for hurting children.

"Gamers, I admittedly didn't use best words to [The San Francisco Chronicle]," he said on Twitter (via Game Politics). "Meant video game industry has inherent conflict of interest in the gun violence debate."

The politician said he knows and has respect for many gamers, but again pointed the finger at the game industry for making profits at the cost of children's health.

"I have a lot of respect for many gamers, " he added. "Many are on my staff and in my family--but the industry has profited at the expense of children."

Yee said last week that gamers have "no credibility" in the discussion surrounding violent video games. He said it is "all about their lust for violence and the industry's lust for money."

Yee is not the only politician taking aim at the game industry following December's deadly shooting in Newton, Conn. that left 20 children and six adults dead. Politicians in Washington, DC, as well as President Obama himself, have put forth legislation and orders aimed at examining violent entertainment and what role it may play in real-world violence.

Epic Mickey studio in trouble?

Epic Mickey studio Junction Point may be in trouble. Multiple sources have confirmed to Kotaku that employees at the Austin, Texas-based studio have been on paid leave for more than a month now, with layoff news expected to be announced today.

Junction Point owner Disney has not yet commented on the rumor.

The news was sparked when Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts' studio Roberts Space Industries tweeted that Junction Point would be shut down entirely. The tweet has since been removed, with the company saying it has "no inside info on their status."

Industry veteran George Broussard also commented on the matter, saying, "The Junction Point rumors have been circulating a while. Warning signs when you give employees two months off after shipping."

Junction Point shipped Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two in November. The game was not a critical or commercial success for Disney, recording mediocre review scores and reportedly selling 270,000 copies in the United States by the end of 2012.

The Austin, Texas development scene has been in the spotlight of late. After finding no bidder in THQ's bankruptcy auction last week, Vigil Games was dissolved. Thirty-five of the Darksiders studio's employees, including cofounder David Adams, are now working at Crytek USA Corp. in Austin, Texas, which opened yesterday.

What Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 Will Take From PCs

With AMD hardware rumoured to be in both next-generation consoles, just what does that mean for developers, gamers, and the future of video games?

If the many rumours and supposed leaks surrounding the Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 are to be believed--and according to GameSpot's sources there's every reason to--both will represent a dramatic change in console architecture. With the exception of the original Xbox--which was based on an Intel Pentium III--consoles have traditionally relied on custom processors and graphics hardware to power them. The Xbox 360, for instance, uses a custom 3.2GHz PowerPC processor, while the PlayStation 3 uses Cell, itself also based on PowerPC architecture.

Traditionally, that has presented something of an issue for developers, particularly for those who started in PC development based on the much more ubiquitous X86 architecture that has powered PCs since the late '70s. Most famously, Valve's Gabe Newell called the PS3 a "waste of everyone's time" and said that developers won't "gain anything except a hatred of the architecture [Sony has] created." Strangely, he changed his tune at the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo and the launch of Portal 2, but there are other developers who have gone on record to question the ease of PS3 development.

The rumoured specs of Sony's PS4 and Microsoft's Xbox 720 show that both companies are creating hardware that will make developers' lives easier, even if it's unconsciously so. The PS4 is rumoured to be powered by an x64, 8-core AMD processor. The Xbox 720 is similarly rumoured to sport an x64, 8-core processor running at 1.6Ghz. While the current information on the Xbox 720 doesn't specify exactly which processor it's using, given the lack of 8-core parts from Intel outside of its server-based Itanium range, it's safe to assume that it too is powered by AMD.

Xbox 720 "Durango"

PlayStation 4 "Orbis"

System Memory: 8GB DDR3
Video Memory: Unknown
CPU: 8 x64 CPU cores @ 1.6GHz
GPU: Custom 800MHz, 12 Shader Cores
Ports: USB 3.0, Ethernet
Drive: Blu-Ray
HDD: Unknown
Audio Output: HDMI & Optical
System Memory: 8GB
Video Memory: 2.2GB
CPU: 8 x64 AMD
GPU: AMD R10xx, 18 Shader Cores
Ports: 4x USB 3.0, 2x Ethernet
Drive: Blu-Ray
HDD: 160 GB
Audio Output: HDMI & Optical

The specs of the chips line up nicely with those of AMD's upcoming Jaguar architecture, which is a design intended for use with notebooks, ultrabooks, and tablets. While that doesn't immediately scream "high performance," the chips do have several features that are desirable in game consoles. Most notable is that the Jaguar is based on a 28nm fabrication process that integrates the GPU into the CPU die. It's an efficient design that means there are fewer parts to be made, there's less heat to disperse, and power consumption is much lower. Given that the original versions of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 pulled close to 200W under load, with reliability suffering as a result, Jaguar's design should be more cost efficient and reliable.

From a performance perspective, numerous benchmarks show AMD's chips lagging behind Intel's when it comes to raw power. The situation is flipped, however, when it comes to pushing 3D graphics. While it's not clear what family of GPU will be powering the next generation of consoles, the fact that it's integrated suggests something similar to AMD's current mobile chips, like the 7970m (itself a close relation of the desktop 7870). Indeed, the 800Mhz clock speed rumoured to be in both the PS4 and Xbox 720 show that it's most likely a slightly trimmed-down version of the 7970m. That chip runs at 850Mhz and features 20 of AMD's Graphics Core Next units.

Looking at the performance of the 7870m gives us some indication of what power to expect from both next-generation consoles. The folks over at Tom's Hardware reviewed the card late last year and produced a great set of benchmarks with games running at max settings at 1080p: Dirt 3, 74.4fps; Battlefield 3, 54.2fps; Metro 2033, 25fps; Skyrim, 62.2fps; and Starcraft II, 104.5fps. We've picked out the top-end benchmarks here (all games at max setting at 1080p), but if you're curious about some of the GPU's other features, there's plenty more to check out at Tom's.

Those keen to see a huge leap in GPU power over the last generation of consoles, or those hoping for Ultra HD 4K resolutions, may be disappointed with those results. However, it's worth remembering that without the overheads of an fully fledged operating system like Windows, and the advantages of an integrated design, there's potential for much greater performance over a similarly configured PC.

That is, unless both Sony and Microsoft opt to use a much more complex operating system to power their consoles. While there's no information on either console's OS at present, the rumour that both will come with 8GB of RAM is an indicator that multitasking is at the forefront of their design. With the Xbox 360 and PS3 increasingly being used more for media playback, Sony and Microsoft may wish to offer more-advanced, PC-like features that increase functionality, at the expense of some processing overhead. Would Microsoft go as far as to use Windows 8 to power the next Xbox? Probably not, but at the very least it would make sense for Microsoft to extend the same user interface values present in its desktop OS and Windows Phone 8 over to the Xbox to reduce consumer confusion.

Regardless, developers should be able to hit the ground running in a way that just hasn't been possible with past console generations. That's the hope anyway. SEGA's Dreamcast gave developers the option of using Windows CE and DirectX to program games, but most of them opted to use SEGA's own software instead. Or they simply went and developed for the PlayStation 2 with its notoriously complicated Emotion Engine. The original Xbox--which used actual PC hardware to power it--suffered less from the intense popularity of the PS2, but that was down to the allure of Xbox Live more than ease of development.

Still, with both consoles said to sport a design that's much closer to PC architecture than it has ever been, there's a hope that launch titles will make much better use of the power available. Having to wait for years until developers get a firm grasp on what each console can do should be much less of an issue this time, provided both companies can come up with alluring and easy-to-use developer kits. And given the similarities between both consoles, porting between them should be a much easier process too.

PC gamers should also see a benefit. For better or worse, consoles have been the lead platforms in multiplatform game development for some time. But by making the transition to x64 architecture, scaling games up for more powerful PC hardware or scaling them down for consoles should be an easier process. And make no mistake: a current quad core i5 or i7 PC armed with a high-end GPU like a GTX 680 is--at least in theory--comfortably more powerful than what's rumoured to be in the new Xbox and PlayStation. But if developers are able to leverage that power and trickle it down to consoles, or even Valve's upcoming Steambox (rumoured to be based on AMD hardware), there's a strong chance we'll see some real visual advancements.

Indeed, at last year's DICE summit, Epic's Mark Rein all but confirmed that Unreal Engine 4 (as shown in the video above) is up and running on next-generation consoles, or in his words "systems [they] can't name yet." Sure, the Xbox 720 and PS4 might not be the leap in technology some were hoping for, but if we see anything like the Unreal 4 tech demo running on those consoles, the future is looking very bright indeed for video games.

Former CLG EU League of Legends team officially joins Evil Geniuses

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Minggu, 27 Januari 2013 | 23.25

Former Counter Logic Gaming European League of Legends team joining new organization, confirming report from earlier this month.

The international eSports organization Evil Geniuses has officially announced that the former Counter Logic Gaming European League of Legends team will be joining the organization. This confirms a GameSpot report on the situation from January 3. Both parties have come to an agreement on terms that will reportedly make them the highest paid League of Legends team in the world.

Alex Garfield, CEO of EG, and Stephen "Snoopeh" Ellis, Captain of EG's new League of Legends team, have told GameSpot that the full five-man roster of Stephen "Snoopeh" Ellis, Henrik "Froggen" Hansen, Peter "Yellowpete" Wüppen, Mitch "Krepo" Voorspoels and Mike "Wickd" Petersen have signed a one-year contract with the team. The DreamHack Summer champions have been mulling over their future since August, having had serious discussions with Evil Geniuses and Curse, and also considered starting their own team. The finalization of the deal comes after many months of back-and-forth of meetings between Evil Geniuses Owner Alex Garfield and the team, with Ellis at the helm of the talks. It is said to be the longest contract negotiation Evil Geniuses have ever had with a player or team.

Both sides note financial support was not the focal point of the deal, as several other factors such as security, longevity, team stability, streaming platform and belief in each other were weighed along with the deal's financials. Garfield met with Ellis and the team at least six separate times throughout the past half-year, with the initial meeting occurring shortly before Ellis and his team played in Korea's OGN The Champions League this past summer.

Ellis and the team began thinking about and exploring their options for 2013 starting before their participation in The Champions last August, at which they narrowly lost to Azubu Frost in the finals. Their contract with CLG was ending December 31, and team knew of CLG's plans to partner with Azubu for the future. While the partnership presented opportunities for the team, they saw it more as a hindrance that relied too much on potentially unstable funding sources, and a lot of moving parts. The players felt CLG was not at the same level professionally as other established organizations, and came to a decision that without a major change in that development, they would not extend their contracts into the new year.

Curse, with a European squad that has gone through a variety of roster changes lately, reportedly made a very strong offer to the former CLG team. The offer had the potential to yield more money through their own additional personal sponsorships, an opportunity not attainable through Evil Geniuses, which is known to have the most restrictive player contracts in the industry in terms of players' independent sponsorship opportunities. Although Curse had on paper the better financial offer and a multiple large team houses to boot, Ellis felt there was too much of a reality TV atmosphere surrounding the team.

There were also said to be obligations from Curse of roughly double the number of hours they would have to stream compared to Evil Geniuses. Not only was this a large factor to the team for both fatigue and practice reasons, the team was said to have much preferred streaming on Twitch.tv rather than Own3d.tv, Evil Geniuses and Curse's streaming partners, respectively. As of a report two days ago, Own3d.tv may be shutting down in less than a week. Talks with Curse slowed down after this.

Negotiations came down to either signing with Evil Geniuses, or pursuing the teams' personal aspirations of building an empire themselves. Worldwide fan favorites CLG and Team SoloMid were born this way, and just less than two weeks ago, their European rivals Alexey "Alex Ich" Ichetovkin and company left Moscow 5 to start their own journey in Gambit Gaming. Ellis was not fond of traditional eSports organizations, going through a rough four-month stint himself with SK Gaming under Captain Carlos "ocelote" Rodríguez at the end of 2011, seeing himself and Peterson leave for CLG Europe for the start of 2012.

Ellis had his own reservations about Evil Geniuses as well, with the team's StarCraft II players Greg "IdrA" Fields and Geoff "iNcontroL" Robinson having unkind things to say about League of Legends in the past, although both recently backtracked on their previous comments and mentioned their support of all eSports titles, including League of Legends. Last December, Garfield spoke to PCGamesN at the fifth IGN ProLeague event in Las Vegas, unsure of what the future may hold for EG in League of Legends. "Obviously, the numbers are impressive, and the passion of the community is impressive," Garfield said. "I think the challenge for me is just to find the right brand representatives for EG. So I've been perfectly happy to wait and sit on the sidelines and let some of those guys grow up a little bit."

Garfield said this, and at the same time knew this five-nation squad of five was the brand he was looking for. Garfield was said to have looked for almost two years for the right players to represent his brand in League of Legends, but was unsatisfied with his available options in his search until now. Even with Riot's Season 3 of the League Championship Series on deck with multi-million dollar prize pools and worldwide exposure was not reason enough to sign a team before the season starts. It was this team or no team for Evil Geniuses.

After initially meeting in Korea in August, and keeping talks going from that point, Garfield again met with the entire team at the MLG Winter Championships in Dallas, bringing a customized PowerPoint presentation with him that outlined the benefits of the team choosing EG over its other options. This is said to have been a major turning point in the negotiating process, as up until that point the team still considered both Curse and starting its own team as better options than signing with EG. Before Garfield's PowerPoint presentation, the team's other options were seen as more attractive and more likely, but after the presentation, the team began to consider the prospect of joining EG as equally viable and attractive to its other options.

Things went well in Dallas, and while EG was no longer behind in its pursuit of Ellis' team, it appeared to have caught up with the team's other options. However, both sides were still skeptical. Ellis and the team still had a strong desire to try things out on their own, and Garfield was having last-minute reservations regarding Riot's plans for Season 3 and how they might affect the way participating teams could run their businesses.

The two met for the final time at IPL5 in Las Vegas, with both parties coming out of talks with their concerns addressed. Looking two, three years ahead was very important to Ellis and the team, despite the fact that their initial EG deal would only be one year in duration. The meeting helped Ellis realize it would be more beneficial to the team to join with a strong organization like EG, rather than taking on the potentially difficult challenge of running things themselves.

Ellis was specifically concerned that, if the team tried to make things work on their own, he himself would have to take less of a player role and more of a management role--something he was not necessarily opposed to but felt was not truly in his best interests at this point in his career. The team agreed after IPL5 that it would be better to fulfill their goals with EG as an organization supporting them.

Ellis and Garfield continued discussions in the two weeks following after IPL5, with a verbal agreement being reached in mid-December. At that point, with Garfield still having some last-minute concerns, Riot eSports personnel personally reached out to him to help alleviate some of his concerns about Season 3 and the future of League of Legends. Ellis and the team take a significant amount of pride in being Evil Geniuses' first League of Legends team, which they saw as an overall plus given that Garfield is known for being incredibly picky with his player recruitment and he had noted as much previously in his PCGamesN interview. Ellis and the team feel that partnering with EG could help bridge the gap between League of Legends and the other professional gaming communities.

The new Evil Geniuses League of Legends roster will play their first games under EG blue at the start of the Season 3 League Championships in Europe.

Former CLG EU League of Legends team officially joins Evil Geniuses

Limited Origin for Mac enters alpha

Testing period for new version of EA virtual marketplace does not include Origin Store or Twitch support; full client to be released "soon."

Origin is on its way to Mac. Electronic Arts has announced that a limited alpha version of the virtual marketplace is now available to download for users in North America and the United Kingdom. EA said it will admit only a "few thousand" users to the trial period.

Origin for Mac is aiming to rival its Windows counterpart in terms of services and functionality, including cloud storage, auto-patching, and friends list support. However, the Origin Store is missing from the alpha trial, as are Twitch streaming options.

A free copy of PopCap's puzzle game Bookworm will be given to all who take part in the Origin for Mac alpha trial. The game will remain in players' libraries when the alpha period comes to a close.

The full Origin for Mac client will launch "soon," EA said.

Origin currently has 30 million members, compared to Steam's 50 million.

Microsoft sees 28 per cent holiday drop in Xbox 360 sales

Microsoft suffers an 11 percent drop year-on-year across its Entertainment and Devices division.

Falling Xbox 360 sales have contributed to Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices division seeing a 11 percent year-on-year drop of $3.77 billion in revenue during the last quarter of 2012, with much of the games industry eagerly anticipating the next Xbox.

Announced during Microsoft's latest earnings call, the Xbox division specifically saw a 28 percent drop in sales from the same three-month period last year, shipping 5.9 million Xbox 360 units compared to 8.2 million from the year before.

The report isn't all doom and gloom: Microsoft says Xbox 360 is still North America's most popular console.

The Entertainment and Devices division also launched Windows Phone 8 during the same quarter, and Microsoft has said spreading its games across multiple connected devices will be crucial to its future plans.

Earlier this week a report claimed to know the specs inside the Xbox 720. For more news on Microsoft's plans to go next-gen, check out GameSpot's ongoing coverage.

Pull on your finest tunic and join Johnny Chiodini on the battlefield with Chivalry: Medieval Warfare.

When I went to University at the tender age of 18, I elected to study English Language and Literature. I then spent the following three years reading a lot of medieval literature. As you might expect, the practical applications for this book learning are decidedly few. Praise be, therefore, to Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, which is not only highly entertaining, but a welcome justification for three years spent translating a dead language.

Sony Europe fined £250,000 for 2011 PlayStation Network hacking

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has been fined £250,000 by the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) for its part in the global 2011 PlayStation Network breach which forced the service offline for 24 days and compromised the personal information of millions of users. The PlayStation owner says it intends to fight the ruling.

The ICO, an independent UK regulatory office which looks to uphold information rights, said Sony had put the personal information of its customers at "unnecessary risk" and had "let everybody down" for failing to ensure such information could not be accessed during the much-publicised hack in April 2011.

"We make no apologies for the penalty in this case," said David Smith, ICO deputy information commissioner and director of data protection, in a public statement. "It's a big penalty, it's quarter of a million pounds, but this is probably the most serious breach that we've had reported to us."

The ICO investigation concluded the hack "could have been prevented if the software had been up-to-date."

"Security is first and foremost the responsibility of the business and Sony let everybody down here," added Smith.

In a statement issued to GameSpot, Sony said it plans to fight the ruling. "Sony Computer Entertainment Europe strongly disagrees with the ICO's ruling and is planning an appeal."

"SCEE notes, however, that the ICO recognises Sony was the victim of 'a focused and determined criminal attack,' that 'there is no evidence that encrypted payment card details were accessed,' and that 'personal data is unlikely to have been used for fraudulent purposes' following the attack on the PlayStation Network."

"Criminal attacks on electronic networks are a real and growing aspect of 21st century life and Sony continually works to strengthen our systems, building in multiple layers of defence and working to make our networks safe, secure and resilient. The reliability of our network services and the security of our consumers' information are of the utmost importance to us, and we are appreciative that our network services are used by even more people around the world today than at the time of the criminal attack."

During 2011's PlayStation Network outage there was much speculation about whether hackers had managed to obtain users' credit card information. After eight days of downtime, however, Sony said it was unlikely such details were obtained. "The entire credit card table was encrypted and we have no evidence that credit card data was taken. The personal data table, which is a separate data set, was not encrypted, but was, of course, behind a very sophisticated security system that was breached in a malicious attack," said Sony at the time.

Sony CEO Kaz Hirai was one of several high-ranking executives who personally apologised for the hack, and the company eventually offered its users a selection of free games as compensation for the downtime.

Wind Waker HD, brand-new Zelda in the works for Wii U

Nintendo to release updated version of Legend of Zelda RPG for Wii U this fall; new entry that will "rethink conventions" of Zelda also on the way.

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker is getting a high-definition remake. Nintendo announced this morning during a presentation that an updated version of the 2003 GameCube role-playing game is due for release on Wii U by this fall. It will boast remastered graphics and GamePad functionality.

In addition, Nintendo today confirmed the existence of the long-rumored Wii U Zelda game.

This game will "rethink the conventions of Zelda," according to producer Eiji Aonuma, and will be a back-to-basics title. Nintendo said it will be some time before it shares additional concrete information about the game.

The most recent Zelda title was 2011's The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which has sold more than 3.42 million copies.

New 3D Mario announced for Wii U

Nintendo will unveil its successor to Super Mario Galaxy 2 at this year's E3.

Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata announced the Wii U game's existence today as part of Nintendo Direct, but did not go into any more specifics other than to say it would be playable at E3 2013, which will be held this year June 11-13.

Iwata did mention that it would be Nintendo EAD Tokyo--the team who made Mario Galaxy, Mario Galaxy 2 and Super Mario 3D Land--handling development of the new 3D Mario.

During the Nintendo Direct presentation Iwata confirmed that Nintendo would also be showing new Mario Kart and Smash Bros. titles at E3 2013, and that Nintendo was already hard at work on a new Wii U Zelda.

A new Wii U Yoshi game was also shown, developed by the same team behind Kirby's Epic Yarn and using the same patchwork art style. Atlus also unveiled its crossover title Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem.

In addition, a new game from Monolith Soft (Xenoblade) was announced. It is being developed under the direction of Tetsuya Takahashi.

Mario's mainline 3D series has produced some of the most celebrated platformers in gaming history: Super Mario 64 in 1996 for the N64, Super Mario Sunshine for the Gamecube in 2002 and Mario Galaxy and its sequel in 2007 and 2010.

The other current Mario series - New Super Mario Bros, which is developed by a different group at Nintendo EAD - came under some criticism in 2012 after Nintendo released two entries into the series in one year; New Super Mario Bros. 2 and New Super Mario Bros. U.

Mass Effect 3 owners unlock N7 armour in Dead Space 3

EA's latest cross-promotion gives iconic threads, but gamers will need a save file on the same platform to get N7 armour for both Isaac and Carver.

Dead Space 3 will give Isaac Clarke the chance to don his own suit of N7 armour, provided players have a Mass Effect 3 save file sitting on their hard drive.

Commander Shepard's iconic armour has been modified slightly to allow for Clarke's headgear, and at present it's not know what in-game benefits the armour has - in previous Dead Space games each different suit of armour has offered various degrees of protection from Necromorph enemies.

There's no way to unlock the armour between platforms, so if gamers intend to play Dead Space 3 on Xbox 360, they'll need an Xbox 360 Mass Effect 3 save.

Isaac's co-op buddy John Carver also gets his own N7 kit with a red tint.

EA is no stranger to cross-promotion, offering a similar Mass Effect costume incentive for last year's Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning as well as Isaac Clarke himself in Skate 3.

Dead Space 3 will be released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on February 5 in the US and February 8 in Europe. Check out GameSpot's previous Dead Space 3 coverage for more information.

THQ: what happens next?

On January 22 at 14:00 Eastern Time, THQ's assets will be going to auction in a move that will result in the publisher's intellectual properties either being sold individually to the highest bidders, or the entire company going to Clearlake Capital Group for a reported $60 million. The move will herald the final chapter of THQ's slow and public demise, but the outcome will mark one of the most significant signs of just how much the games industry has shifted during the current hardware generation.

The beginning…

THQ was founded by Jack Friedman in April 1990 as a toy company with intentions to take part the burgeoning video game scene. One of its earliest success stories was an adaptation of the movie Home Alone in 1991, with the game developed by Bethesda Softworks on the NES, Sega of America on Mega Drive and Game Gear, and Imagineering Inc on SNES.

Despite its commercial success, the game was not warmly received at the time. "If I had one wish, it would be to visit every Mega Drive owner in person and tell them not to buy this grotesquely over-priced and pathetically under-developed mockery of a game," said Amanda Dyson in her 24% review of the game in issue 3 of Mega way back in 1992.

These were titles you'd never want to unwrap for your birthday, but ones you'd probably end up buying with your leftover Christmas money. Yet these early successes helped establish THQ's business practices, and for the next two decades the company would focus predominantly on producing low-cost, licensed titles for a mass-market audience. Over the years THQ would snap up the rights to make games for Ren & Stimpy, Where's Waldo?, Wall-E, The Incredibles, Evil Dead, Rugrats, Spongebob Squarepants, My Little Pony, Bratz, Avatar, Alex Rider, Warhammer, Star Wars, and its absolutely crucial WWE license. THQ even saw fit to pump money into surprising cult classic 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand after grabbing it from the list of games dropped as part of 2008's Activision-Vivendi merger.

While the majority of THQ's output has often left something to be desired in the quality stakes, the publisher at least understood - at the turn of the millennium, anyway - its place on shop shelves. THQ games received deep, alluring discounts around the holidays; these were titles you'd never want to unwrap for your birthday, but ones you'd probably end up buying with your leftover Christmas money.

…of the end

Games publishers are almost universally going through a hard time right now, but 2012 was an especially horrible year for THQ. At the start of the year it was almost removed from the NASDAQ stock exchange as its share price had bottomed out to cents from the respectable $30 it was claiming in 2007, hundreds of staff were made redundant, and CEO Brian Farrell took a 50% pay cut. Even Take Two president Strauss Zelnick took some time out (from doing things like appearing on the front cover of Men's Fitness) to publicly declare that "THQ won't be around in six months" in April 2012. Well, at least THQ managed to prove him wrong on that - the publisher might manage nine months.

It was definitely a bad start to the year. And things would only get worse. What, exactly, had gone so wrong with THQ?

Chief among THQ's problems was indubitably uDraw, the console-based graphics tablet that completely flopped at retail. Fussy, unpopular and grossly mismanaged, the only person who really benefited from the epic bungle of uDraw was the landlord charging rent for the warehouses currently housing the 1.2 million unsold units.

uDraw was THQ's attempt to get back onboard the lucrative children's market, an area it dominated in the early noughties but one it lost control of as soon as the Wii came out. Its licensed properties simply weren't selling or were drying up - the publisher lost its arrangement to publish games based on Disney movies - and its attempts to carve out new IP floundered, culminating in the critical savaging of Homefront in 2011. THQ closed developer Kaos Studios shortly afterwards, with the game's 2.6 million shipped units not quite the Call of Duty beater its publisher wanted.

Fussy, unpopular and grossly mismanaged, the only person who really benefited from the epic bungle of uDraw was the landlord charging rent for the warehouses currently housing the 1.2 million unsold units. The problems keep on coming: its mismanaged attempt to enter the once-powerful MMO genre with Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium was cancelled and restructured into a single-player game that's now gone MIA. Plus the publisher's two high-profile IP announcements, Guillermo Del Toro's Insane and Tomonobu Itagaki's The Devil's Third both had their rights transferred back to their respective studios.

Heck, even a tattooist sued the publisher for its replication of Carlos Condit's lion tattoo in the commercial flop that was UFC 3.

It came as no real surprise that, after months of back-and-forth with creditors, THQ's downward spiral continued until the company finally filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on December 19.

Speaking in a statement at the time, Brian Farrell said "the sale and filing are necessary next steps to complete THQ's transformation and position the company for the future, as we remain confident in our existing pipeline of games, the strength of our studios, and THQ's deep bench of talent."

"We are grateful to our outstanding team of employees, partners and suppliers who have worked with us through this transition. We are pleased to have attracted a strong financial partner for our business, and we hope to complete the sale swiftly to make the process as seamless as possible."

What happens next?

Right now, THQ has three announced games hoping for a swift and successful conclusion to its auction on Tuesday. Those are South Park: The Stick of Truth and Metro: Last Light (both currently pegged for a March release) alongside PC RTS Company of Heroes 2. Even though those games are almost certainly in the final stretches of development, it's no certainty that they'll hit their release dates - last week US retailer GameStop pulled Metro: Last Light from its digital storefront and offered refunds to customers. Speaking to GameSpot, VP Matt Hodges said "due to THQ's current financial situation and uncertainty of delivery, in order to protect our consumers we removed the ability to pre-purchase that specific game."

As part of THQ's bankruptcy, though, the publisher has revealed five more games in production - though we only know the working titles of four at present. Those are Turtle Rock Studios' Evolve, THQ Montreal's 1666, Relic Entertainment's Atlas and Vigil Games' Crawler.

Finally, there's Saints Row 4 - THQ's most lucrative franchise going, and the one most rival publishers will likely be looking to snap up. EA, Ubisoft and Warner Bros. have all publicly expressed an interest in various chunks of THQ's assets ahead of Tuesday's auction. Even Double Fine has expressed an interest.

The THQ name might not survive the next few months, then, but with any luck its current slate of games will manage to see the light of day. Tuesday afternoon, then, looks set to be a big one for the games industry.

Dead Space 3 has microtransactions

Dead Space 3 will be the first entry in the franchise to include microtransactions. Eurogamer reports today that the action game will allow players to use real-world money to purchase various resources like materials and scrap parts. This is entirely optional, Dead Space 3 associate producer Yara Khoury explained.

"You can buy resources with real money, but scavenger bots can also give you the currency that you can use on the marketplace, so you don't have to spend [real-world] dollars," Khoury said.

It was not revealed how much the microtransactions would cost, though Khoury said players will have several currency bundle options to choose from.

Though players will be able to buy items in Dead Space 3, Khoury explained that gamers will not be able to obtain high-level weapons right away. "There are a lot of weapon parts that are only available to buy later in the game. Unless you're playing through it again [on New Game Plus]," Khoury said.

Dead Space 3 comes to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on February 5 in the United States and February 8 in Europe. For more, check out GameSpot's previous Dead Space 3 coverage.

Army, Navy seeking out better video game tech

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 21 Januari 2013 | 23.25

The US Army and Navy are reportedly looking into ways to make virtual training more exciting for new recruits.

According to an article in National Defense Magazine, both the Army and Navy are seeking contracts for the creation of updated virtual PC simulation games that will look and play more like Call of Duty than the games already available.

"The industry needs to find a way to get past the older code that's sitting out there," Havok vice president of sales and marketing Brian Waddle told the publication. "[Soldiers] look at these simulators, and they don't take them seriously because they don't look as good as what they're playing in their living rooms."

According to the report, the Army is looking for a first-person, massively multiplayer online shooter to replace Bohemia Interactive's Virtual Battlespace 2. It is offering a contract of approximately $44.5 million over five years to the winning application, which must include the ability to integrate more players across larger landmasses and accurately re-create territories like Afghanistan.

For its part, the Navy is also looking for games that will be able to train sailors in specific tasks, including a training program that will run on Crytek's CryEngine 3. The Navy will offer three separate contracts of $100 million each.

Free-to-play Spartacus Legends gets R18+ rating

The upcoming Ubisoft title Spartacus Legends has become the second game to receive an R18+ rating in Australia following the introduction of the adult classification earlier this month.

Based on Starz Entertainment's original Spartacus television show, Spartacus Legends is a free-to-play title for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. Its R18+ classification marks the first time a digital-only title has been given an adult rating in Australia, raising questions about the methodologies in place for policing distribution of age-appropriate digital content on home consoles.

Replying to a request for comment, a spokesperson for Sony Computer Entertainment Australia (SCEA) said both digital and disc-based games can be restricted by parental controls on the PlayStation 3.

"There are a number of parental controls in place," the spokesperson told GameSpot. "In terms of purchasing or playing online content on the PlayStation Network (PSN), at the time of account creation you have to be over 18 to set up a PSN account. If a person is under 18, the requirement is that the parent sets up a Master Account for the PSN, and can then create a sub-account for the child. When setting up the sub account, the sub account holder will not be able to play any games online rated above their age."

Microsoft did not return a request for comment at the time of publication. However, the Xbox 360 does also feature parental controls.

According to Ubisoft, Spartacus Legends will let players experience the life of a gladiator, from practicing on training grounds to participating in battles in the arena. Players will be tasked with dismembering their foes, and will have thousands of weapon combinations and skill system to use along the way.

Players will be able to fight as Spartacus, Crixus, or a user-created gladiator, and take part in fights with friends locally or via online multiplayer.

The Classification Board of Australia rated the game R18+ for "high impact bloody violence". According to the classification listing, the game contains high-impact violence, and moderate-impact themes, nudity, and language.

Spartacus Legends does not yet have a release date for Australia, but is due out in Q1 this year in the US.

Pong creator Atari files for bankruptcy

The long-troubled U.S. arm of Pong, Breakout and Asteroids creator Atari has filed a petition for bankruptcy.

Reported by the L.A. Times, Atari Inc. and three affiliates filed petitions for Chapter 11 reorganisation in New York's U.S. Bankruptcy Court late on Sunday. The move is an attempt to break free from its French parent Atari S.A. and refocus the company to make digital and mobile titles, according to an anonymous "knowledgeable" source.

While many of its iconic properties will be instantly recognisable, Atari is not in rude health: its revenue plummeted 34% in fiscal year 2012 and 43% the year before that. The L.A. Times even points out that licensing the famous Atari logo for use in other products now makes for 17% of the company's revenue.

Another problem for the U.S. chunk of the company is "near total reliance" on London financial company BlueBay Asset Management, an arrangement which lapsed on Dec 31 and means the company lacks the funds to release any of its games currently in the works, one of which is the money-gobbling Atari Casino. Last year the company teamed up with Zynga to produce the in-app purchase fueled Breakout spin-off Super Bunny Breakout.

Atari's share price has also tumbled from 11 Euros to less than one Euro since 2008.

Today's Atari bears little similarity to the iconic publisher that shaped the direction of gaming in the 70s and 80s. French publisher Infogrames licensed the Atari name in 2003 and and in 2008 acquired all the gaming pioneer's American assets.

Major layoffs at Wild Man dev

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Minggu, 20 Januari 2013 | 23.25

Just days after launching a Kickstarter campaign for a new RPG/RTS hybrid called Wild Man, developer Gas Powered Games has enacted a round of company-wide layoffs. CEO Chris Taylor confirmed the news to Polygon today.

"These layoffs are substantial, but it's not everyone," Taylor said. "We still have a fully functioning company, IT, HR, Operations, etc. And have retained some key people."

Taylor told Joystiq the layoffs total around 40 employees.

Taylor said he will release a Kickstarter video explaining the current situation to backers in the coming days. In this video he will ask supporters "if I should continue and then rehire people, or terminate the campaign now."

The Kickstarter campaign for Wild Man--asking for $1.1 million--went live on Monday. At press time, the fund stands at $175,000 pledged from more than 3,500 backers.

Taylor explained to GameSpot this week that he is betting the entire company's future on the success of Wild Man.

"Everything I have ever worked for in my entire career--in my entire life--it culminates in this one event," he said at the time. "I am absolutely all in. That's it. What victory is worth achieving if there's no consequence of failure?"

DmC: Devil May Cry - Graphics Comparison

@LukeWesty

Exclusives mean royalties, which means more money. While ports also costs money and manpower. GTA 4 ran like crap on mainstream PC's because Rockstar couldn't bother to make a decent job at it.

Take a look at Halo and Gears of War, the first ones were released on PC's, while the sequels remain console exclusives, merely so that they sell more xbox's, the same can be said about MGS 4 on the PS3.

Most console to PC ports tend to get lower scores, due to the poor port job, low frame rate even though the graphics are sub par, poor keyboard and mouse support, DRM ridden. etc...

Sony settles lawsuit with Kevin Butler actor

Jerry Lambert, the actor who played Kevin Butler in dozens of PlayStation adverts, has settled a lawsuit with Sony over his appearance in a commercial for Bridgestone tyres.

As part of the terms of the settlement, reported by MediaPost, Lambert admitted that the advertisement may have caused confusion and that his contract with Sony meant he was unable to promote products from other video game companies.

Lambert has agreed to spend the next two years not appearing to promote "any other video game or computer entertainment system or video game company." Once Lambert's two years on the naughty step have played out, he has also agreed to spend the next two years giving Sony the heads up in any subsequent advertisement which endorses a competitor's product.

The Kevin Butler character still remains in the possession of Sony, as you might expect, although we haven't seen Sony use the character in a while.

The original lawsuit came about in September 2012 after Lambert was seen playing a Nintendo Wii in a US advertisement for the tyre manufacturer Bridgestone, with players able to pick up one of Nintendo's consoles as part of a promotion.

Later the advert was edited to remove Lambert, as Sony alleged that their contract with Lambert stopped him from endorsing their competitors, and that Bridgestone had essentially poached the Kevin Butler character. Bridgestone, however, denied that Kevin Butler was featured in the advertisement.

"Use of the Kevin Butler character to sell products other than those from PlayStation misappropriates Sony's intellectual property, creates confusion in the market, and causes damage to Sony," said Sony at the time.

While Sony and Lambert have now settled their differences, the publisher is still engaged in a legal tussle with Bridgestone.
