Cerny: Full hardware capabilities of PS4 may take 'three to four years' to be harnessed

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 28 Agustus 2013 | 23.26

PlayStation 4 lead architect Mark Cerny believes that while PlayStation 4 developers are already quickly adapting to content creation for the new system, the real customisation and utilisation of the machine's true power won't be until "year three or year four of the console".

In an interview with Polygon during Gamescom, Cerny outlined the need to create an obvious visual gap between the capabilities of current and next-generation systems.

"We set our target at 10 times the PlayStation 3's performance, because that's what we felt we needed to achieve in order to differentiate the titles," Cerny told the website. "When I did pitches to developers about the hardware, I talked about what I call the Akihabara test. Akihabara is an electronics district in Tokyo, it's just full of stores where you can buy just about anything you plug into a wall socket. I knew that at some point, there'd be out on the sidewalk a PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, and they might even be showing the same game, and the PlayStation 4 had to be powerful enough that when people walked by, they had to look at the PlayStation 4 and say, 'Wow, I have to have that.'

"I believe we are at that level of performance," Cerny said. "I mean, the million pre-orders we have is, I think, speaking to that."

Cerny went on to say that while the PS4's new architecture is already familiar to develop for given its PC similarities, it will still be three to four years before the real capabilities of the system are identified and harnessed.

"It's a supercharged PC architecture, so you can use it as if it were a PC with unified memory," he said. "Much of what we're seeing with the launch titles is that usage; it's very, very quick to get up to speed if that's how you use it. But at the same time, then you're not taking advantage of all the customisation that we did in the GPU. I think that really will play into the graphical quality and the level of interaction in the worlds in, say, year three or year four of the console."

The PlayStation 4 goes on sale on November 15 in North America, and November 29 for Europe, the UK, and Australia. The device will launch in 32 countries globally this year.

Xbox One will not launch on November 8 - Report

Yesterday, a rumour circulated that the as-yet-undated Xbox One may launch on November 8. That information appears to have been incorrect, according to an update by the original reporter, Kotaku.

The previous information--allegedly sourced through a marketing company with close ties to US retailer Walmart--suggested that Microsoft's next-generation console could launch in the first half of the month. A second, unnamed source, reportedly close to the Xbox creator, told the publication that the November 8 date is false, supposedly saying that the date will be later than was originally reported. No specifics were given.

GameSpot contacted Microsoft seeking confirmation, but a spokesperson was unavailable at the time of publication. As mentioned previously, in the absence of any official release details for the system, all dates should be treated as speculation.

Microsoft has so far only confirmed that the Xbox One will launch this November for $499/€499/£429/A$599.

Zoo Tycoon: Elephant Hugging 101

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Minggu, 25 Agustus 2013 | 23.26

I was thinking I might want this for an old school Tycoon experience, but I'm confused.  He says that game is still there, but then later he says if you hate Kinect and/or casual games, you won't like it.  If it's actually still a Tycoon game that just has the added ability to get down into the Kinect mode and do stuff, that's fine, but I'm not sure what to think now.

CRYENGINE Demo

So judging by the all caps and logo, this is the new CRYENGINE (no numbers after the name).  One thing that stood out, that puddle of water drying up over time.  Not just because it looked good and was supposedly procedural and not scripted, but I don't recall any game where water dries/evapourates in realtime.

PS: When I saw the Statue of Liberty's head, first thing I thought, "YOu maniacs!  You blew it up!  Ahhh, god damn you!  God damn you all ta hell!" :)

Sony apologizes to Rockstar over GTAV pre-load leak

PlayStation maker says it "sincerely apologizes to Rockstar and GTA fans across the world who were exposed to the spoiler content."

Sony has apologized to Rockstar Games over the recent Grand Theft Auto V pre-load leak.

"Regrettably, some people who downloaded the digital pre-order of Grand Theft Auto V through the PlayStation Store in Europe were able to access certain GTA V assets. These assets were posted online," social media manager Sid Shuman said in a statement.

"We have since removed the digital pre-order file from the PlayStation Store in Europe. We sincerely apologize to Rockstar and GTA fans across the world who were exposed to the spoiler content," he added. "GTA V is one of the most highly anticipated games of the year with a very passionate following, and we're looking forward to a historic launch on September 17."

GTAV launches worldwide on September 17 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Its online multiplayer component--Grand Theft Auto Online--will arrive two weeks later on October 1.

Check out GameSpot's preview of the multiplayer component and interview with Rockstar North head Leslie Benzies for more.

Video Review - Payday 2

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Sabtu, 24 Agustus 2013 | 23.26

A good video review Chris. Very detailed.

It is the First Person aspect of the game that puts me off of it. Does it have to be in that view?

Judging by he comments here being at ZERO, I'm guessing not many others are interested? Which is a shame.

Their timing is a wee bit off though, I mean GTA V is around the corner and it has Bank Heists in it too... and then some!

I'll keep an eye out never the less.

Payday 2 Review

In crime, as in game development, things don't always go as planned. A suspicious passerby might call the cops in early, and then those cops might phase through a wall. The loot you expect to find might not be there, and the end-of-heist reward you're hoping for might never arrive. Civilians might try to flee in the middle of a firefight, or they might disappear through the floor. And yet, despite the potential pitfalls and the actual flaws of Payday 2, things have a way of coming together. The tension of planning and keeping things quiet, the excitement of asserting control when all hell breaks loose, and the satisfaction of a successful score outshine any dull spots, making Payday 2 an immensely enjoyable way to team up for a life of crime.

Some museum trips are more eventful than others.

As part of the four-man crew of Hoxton, Chains, Dallas, and Wolf, you are contracted to do jobs by a dude named Bain. He sets you up with various shady characters and presents you with a city map of constantly changing opportunities. There are around 10 distinct jobs that pop up regularly with varying difficulty levels that affect how hard and how lucrative they will be. Some are stand-alone gigs, like bank heists, store robberies, and nightclub burglaries, while others span multiple days and involve stealing art, cooking meth, transporting drugs, dealing with gang members, and stealing from senators.

Mission objectives are generally clear, though there are a number of subtleties to contend with as well. Some challenges can be mastered by experience; it won't take you long to memorize the floor plan of the bank, and you quickly become familiar with the penalty for setting off alarms in the art gallery. Others require you to be flexible; cameras and security guards aren't always in the same place, and even doors, safes, and getaway spots can vary from mission to mission. This mix of constancy and variability does a great job of making you feel more confident with each mission while simultaneously keeping you on your toes. You can never be perfectly prepared for a job, and that's the way it should be.

Unfortunately, there are also some things that are more difficult to prepare for. Strange happenings with civilian and police character models, walls that you can pull solid objects through, and other technical oddities crop up throughout Payday 2. They usually have only minor effects on your criminal activity, but they do add a sour note to the otherwise welcome unpredictability. Such issues aren't likely to derail your heists, but they are occasionally enough to turn your stealthy infiltration into a messy affair.

Keeping things quiet is one of the biggest challenges of Payday 2 because so much can go wrong. A suspicious civilian might see you put on your mask. A security camera might spot you at a distance. A guard might round the corner when you're not expecting it. The guy on the radio might not believe you when you pretend to be the guard you just knocked out. Or someone, somewhere might hear the tinkling of broken glass, and before you know it, the cops are on their way and your escape van has bugged out. Completing a job without the cavalry showing up triggers a rush of giddy satisfaction, but more often than not, you're going to have to shoot your way out.

Once the alarm has sounded, the cops are on their way, but you can still manage the situation. Taking civilian hostages delays the armed escalation, keeping the really tough enemies at bay for a while. Moving your loot to a defensible position, closing the metal shutters on a store, or finding planks to board up a window can help you hold out while you wait for your drill or lock pick or computer hack to work its magic. Meanwhile, the cops come at you, and you gun them down in droves. The gunplay is solid and the AI is aggressive, but combat is more of a war of attrition than a contest of skill. Stick around long enough, and you will inevitably be overrun, no matter how skillfully you delay and fend off the advancing waves. On tougher jobs, there is more loot to grab than you can easily get away with, tempting you to try to hold out a bit longer to get a fatter payday. Get too greedy, however, and all is lost. Payday 2 channels this classic criminal conundrum nicely, right down to the heated mid-battle disagreements between team members.

Blizzard removes mention of next-gen MMO from careers page

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 23 Agustus 2013 | 23.26

Blizzard Entertainment has removed all mention of the company's next-generation massively multiplayer online game, Titan, from its careers page.

The Irvine, California-based company is hiring for StarCraft II, World of Warcraft, Diablo III, and Blizzard All-Stars, but no longer has open requisitions for its next-generation MMO.

A Blizzard Entertainment representative was not immediately available to comment.

Earlier this month, Blizzard Entertainment cofounder Mike Morhaime said Titan may not be subscription-based, or even an MMO, when it releases.

"We're in the process of selecting a new direction for the project and re-envisioning what we want the game to be," Morhaime said during an Activision Blizzard earnings call on August 1. "While we can't talk about the details yet, it is unlikely to be a subscription-based MMORPG."

At the end of May, Blizzard confirmed "large design and technology changes" for Titan. No official release date for the game has been announced so far.

Morhaime also confirmed at the time that several developers on Titan have been shifted to the World of Warcraft and Diablo development teams, though specific numbers were not disclosed.

Blizzard Entertainment's current MMO, World of Warcraft, is the biggest subscription-based MMO on the market. It launched in 2004 and had 7.7 million subscribers as of June 30.

EA has "very good" relationship with Sony

Though Electronic Arts has a number of Xbox exclusivity deals in place, the publisher has a "very good" relationship with Sony, EA Labels president Frank Gibeau told CVG in a new interview.

Any perception that EA favors Xbox over PlayStation is false, Gibeau said.

"We're changing nothing in our policy about being platform-agnostic," Gibeau said. "One of the things that struck me this week is how a tactical deal with one of our platform partners has been blown out and perceived as strategic tilt--that's a messaging error on our part. There is no strategic tilt."

Respawn Entertainment's Titanfall, published through the EA Partners program, will release only on Xbox consoles, while Battlefield 4 downloadable content will debut first on Xbox One. In addition, Peggle 2 and Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare will appear first on Xbox systems.

In addition, all Xbox One preorders in Europe will include a free copy of FIFA 14.

Gibeau added that PlayStation and Xbox are both "very important" to EA and that he would like to see both platforms succeed in the future.

"Sony has been executing exceptionally well on the next-gen transition," he said. "Their hardware's hot, they're clear and disciplined and consistent with their policies, they are showing some amazing things with indies; so overall I couldn't be more pleased with how they're executing."

Finally, Gibeau said, "It's a long cycle, and certainly there's potential with Sony exclusivity deals too."

The PlayStation 3 and Xbox One go head-to-head when both consoles launch in November.

Wind Waker HD's Hero Mode detailed

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD will feature an all-new Hero Mode, Nintendo confirmed during a new preview of the upcoming Wii U title.

Nintendo product marketing manager Erik Peterson told GameSpot that the new Hero Mode is aimed at long-time series fans looking for a challenge.

"For those veteran Zelda fans, people who really love a challenge, Hero Mode is going to be great," Peterson said.

As part of the Hero Mode, all enemies will do double damage and no hearts can be found in the environment, Peterson explained.

This game mode, similar to the one from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, can be toggled on or off when a player loads up their save file. This will allow players to try out the advanced difficulty option without being locked in for their entire playthrough.

The Hero Mode was first revealed by an Amazon listing last month.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD launches in October. The game will be playable at PAX Prime next week.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer to retire

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will retire in the next 12 months, the company announced today. He will officially step down upon the completion of a process to choose his successor, the company said, though no front-runners were named.

"There is never a perfect time for this type of transition, but now is the right time," Ballmer said in a statement. "We have embarked on a new strategy with a new organization and we have an amazing Senior Leadership Team. My original thoughts on timing would have had my retirement happen in the middle of our company's transformation to a devices and services company. We need a CEO who will be here longer term for this new direction."

Ballmer is a longtime Microsoft employee and has served as its CEO since 2000. According to Forbes, his estimated net worth is $15.2 billion.

Microsoft's Board of Directors has established a special committee to direct the selection process for Ballmer's successor. This committee is chaired by the board's lead independent director John Thompson, as well as chairman of the board Bill Gates, among others.

The board is working with executive recruiting firm Heidrick & Struggles International Inc., and will consider both internal and external candidates, Microsoft said.

"As a member of the succession planning committee, I'll work closely with the other members of the board to identify a great new CEO," Gates said. "We're fortunate to have Steve in his role until the new CEO assumes these duties."

Microsoft's announcement of Ballmer's retirement comes a month after the executive laid out his vision for "One Microsoft" that aims to enable the company to operate at "greater speed, efficiency and capability in a fast changing world."

Former Xbox division boss Don Mattrick left Microsoft in July to join Zynga as its new CEO. Leading the company's gaming endeavors moving forward is Julie Larson-Green, a 19-year company veteran.

The Xbox One launches in November for $500.

Oculus Rift devs hoping for "Matrix-level" virtual reality

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 22 Agustus 2013 | 23.26

Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey has high hopes for his company's Oculus Rift virtual reality headset and for the future of virtual reality overall.

Speaking with Eurogamer this week, Luckey said though virtual reality technology still has a ways to go, it could advance to the level of what was seen in The Matrix in the coming years.

"VR tech today is still very crude, but it's advancing rapidly," Luckey said. "I think in a few years, maybe a few decades depending on how lucky we are, we'll be able to get Matrix-level virtual reality."

Also in the interview, Oculus VR COO Laird Malamed said the company has held discussions with Microsoft and Sony about bringing the technology to consoles.

"They're a little busy," Malamed said. "We've chatted, but they're trying to bring their new consoles out. It's a possibility--it would work. It's the same thing as iOS--it could technically work, but the business side isn't there."

There's even the possibility that Microsoft and/or Sony are working on virtual reality headsets of their own. Malamed said he would welcome this move, because it would mean the market for virtual reality games is growing.

"They're big companies with lots of resources. For us we'd say good," he said. "With John Carmack coming over as our CTO, we've had a great Kickstarter campaign, they continue to be great supporters, but we're still a start-up. VR's had a lot of failures in the past, and so the more people that enter the market is good because developers that ultimately have to develop the content, they know they'll have people playing their games which is better for all of us."

Malamed also revealed that more than 20,000 developer units of the Oculus Rift have been shipped since they became available earlier this year. Development kits are available today for $300 each.

Earlier this month, Doom studio id Software cofounder John Carmack joined Oculus VR as its chief technology officer.

EA aiming for jaw-dropping Star Wars games

Electronic Arts is hoping to make jaws drop with its upcoming Star Wars games, beginning with the recently announced next-generation Star Wars: Battlefront game, in development at Battlefield studio DICE.

"The most important thing for me is that we take the Star Wars license and come up with games where people's jaws drop," EA Games vice president Patrick Soderlund told Polygon. "We need to do with this what [Batman: Arkham Asylum] did for the Batman license."

Soderlund wouldn't go into details on the new Star Wars: Battlefront game, saying "it's going to take a while." He did, however, confirm that the speeder and AT-AT shown in the game's teaser trailer will be featured in the full game "for sure."

The executive also said DICE is poring over past Star Wars games to make the new Battlefront title, including the controversial Star Wars: Battlefront III.

"We didn't toss anything out," Soderlund said. "We're looking at the old games. We have access to everything that was done during the LucasArts era. But we do want to take our own stance."

DICE's new Star Wars: Battlefront game is one of multiple Star Wars titles EA currently has in development as part of its exclusive deal with brand owner Disney. Dead Space studio Visceral Games is also working on an all-new Stars Wars title, though no details are available about this project.

The new Star Wars: Battlefront game is expected to launch in summer 2015 alongside Disney's upcoming Star Wars films.

GameStop sales fall as Xbox One, PS4 loom

GameStop today reported sales and earnings for the second quarter ended August 3, revealing overall global sales fell as next-generation consoles the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 loom on the horizon.

Total global sales for the period hit $1.38 billion, down 10.7 percent from the $1.55 billion recorded this time last year. Comparable store sales also fell 10.7 percent, which was slightly above the guidance announced in May.

GameStop's mobile and digital businesses grew during the period, jumping 121.4 percent to $55.4 million and 17.9 percent to $158 million, respectively. New software sales dropped 9.3 percent, while new hardware sales slumped further, dropping 19.4 percent.

Overall preowned sales at GameStop fell 6 percent "as consumers continue to wait for the launch of the new consoles later this year," the company said.

GameStop posted a profit of 10.5 million during the quarter, compared to net earnings of $21 million a year ago.

"Through two quarters, the year has played out as expected," GameStop CEO Paul Raines said in a statement. "During this console transition period, our financial results have been supported by the continued growth of our emerging businesses. This strength helped drive a 130 basis point improvement in gross margin rate for the second quarter."

"Of course, excitement continues to build for the upcoming new games and the launch of the PS4 and Xbox One," he added. "As the global gaming leader, GameStop is uniquely positioned to capitalize on the new, innovative products coming to market."

Despite the downturn in overall sales, GameStop raised earnings projections for the full year "based on the strong second quarter results as well as positive trends in new console preorders and higher-than-expected launch quantity allocation."

The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 launch in November. Sony has reported more than 1 million preorders for its next-generation console.

GameStop will hold an earnings call at 11 a.m. EDT today to discuss results and answer analyst and media questions. Check back later for more.

Loot 2.0 - Diablo III: Reaper of Souls

@SteamyPotatoes @Evil__Homer Homer...the initial point of the AH (unless I'm misunderstanding) was to streamline the trading process and make it easier to exchange items one person doesn't need or want for the resources to get other items a person does need or want.

At the core, I want to like such a feature...however, given the difficulty of the game at launch, and peoples' desire to get to the end the fastest (epeen), many of them abused (and still abuse) the ease of the AH to get epic loot, and don't even make an attempt to farm good items.  They see it as more "efficient" to just flip a few items, get insane gear and faceroll MP10 and complain that they're bored, than just fighting and struggling through the RNG til they EARN good gear.

By increasing the quality of gear, sure...people can still buy it if they want...but when more legendaries are dropping and many of them can be tweaked via the Mystic...why would anyone want to be the person who insisted on buying everything, when playing the game can actually get you farther?

New CryEngine revealed

Crytek today announced the next era of its CryEngine game development tools, but it's not called the CryEngine 4.

The Crysis and Ryse: Son of Rome studio said the engine will no longer be identified by version numbers, due to the game engine evolving over time with new updates and upgrades.

Instead, the engine will be known simply as CryEngine going forward. Crytek also announced today that its Engine Licensing and Research & Development teams have come together in an effort to "double the level of one-to-one care" that game licensees can tap into.

This is "in essence offering Crytek's R&D as a service for developers using the new CryEngine," Crytek said.

The new CryEngine supports development on current-generation consoles; Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U, as well as PC and "further platforms" to be added in the future.

"Since CryEngine 3 was launched in 2009, we've dramatically changed the engine so many times, with so many major new features, it's not the same engine anymore," Crytek business development director Carl Jones said in a statement.

Ryse: Son of Rome launches this November on Xbox One.

WildStar will be a subscription-based MMO

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 19 Agustus 2013 | 23.26

Upcoming sci-fi MMO WildStar will require a subscription to play when it launches on PC in Spring 2014, developer Carbine Studios has confirmed.

Carbine will sell 1, 3, 6, and 12 month subscriptions for WildStar, with prices ranging from $14.99/€12.99/£8.99 for a rolling one-month subscription, to $10.99/€9.99/£6.99 a month when purchasing a year's subscription upfront.

Alongside regular subscriptions, WildStar will also feature an in-game item--C.R.E.D.D.--which will add 30 days of subscription time to a users' account when used. C.R.E.D.D. will be sold in WildStar's Community Exchange, an in-game store that will always sell items anonymously to players at the lowest available price at the time.

C.R.E.D.D. will also be sold for real money, with its price set at $19.99/€16.99/£11.99. C.R.E.D.D. can be stockpiled, but cannot be gifted or traded.

The standard edition of WildStar will be sold for $59.99/€44.99/£34.99 and will contain the game, 30 days of subscription time, and 3 week-long guest passes, adds Carbine.

Carbine also confirmed that it was investigating the possibility of incorporating microtransactions into the game, but is yet to introduce such a scheme. "We're interested in microtransactions, but only if we can offer it in a way that fits with the vision of WildStar. We're approaching this topic very carefully and will share details as they come available," said the developer in a statement.

Top Five Skyrim Mods of the Week - Sinister Sonic Slaughter

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Minggu, 18 Agustus 2013 | 23.26

y u do dis sonok?

Excellent show as always, gentlemen.

I'd say the winner mods of the week were the last two. Ebonville was great and the "summon more" mod seems very useful. It's often the simple ones that are the best.

Not so sure about the weather mods you showed. They had their upsides but the fog effect looked more like blur on distant objects rather than fog. The snow looked like an 80's television.

Looking forward to your gamescom coverage (vidjagames yay). But keep your shirt on, Seb! I think we've seen enough of your nipples for one month ;)

An Evening with Gearbox Software: Part 1

I will never blame Gearbox for DNF, but there simply is no excuse for A:CM. No matter who explicitly developed it, Gearbox was responsible for it and they completely botched it. BUT...the hate for them is getting fucking old. Everything else they've done ranges from good to great, and they are clearly, overall, an exceptional developer.  Pitchford has genuine enthusiasm and passion for games that few people in his position contain, and that's refreshing in this industry. They're far from a perfect company and have made some obviously questionable moves, but to completely condemn them for one admittedly big fuck up, when the rest of their track record is pretty solid, is just silly.

Truth be told, I'm not that upset about A:CM anymore. I'm more upset about them completely ignoring the fact that Borderlands 2 is a massively frustrating and unrewarding experience, especially as a single player game. Kinda makes me worried that BL3 will be the same way since they are choosing not to do anything about it.

All PS Vitas $199 at Target August 18-24

[UPDATE] Price cut confirmed for 3G and WiFi systems.

[UPDATE] The Target weekly ad for August 18-24 released today confirms the price cut. All PlayStation Vita systems are $199 through the end of the week.

The original story is below

All PlayStation Vita systems will be marked down to $199 at Target beginning August 18 and running through August 24, according to a leaked Target advertisement obtained by Blu-ray Forums.

The ad specifies that "all PS Vita game systems" will be marked down. The handhelds currently retail for $250 for the Wi-Fi version and $300 for the 3G model.

Neither Sony nor Target were immediately available to comment.

The PS Vita received a price cut in Japan in February, but Sony said in February that no such price drop would be extended to North America due to exchange rates and other factors.

Decisions about price drops are made on a region-by-region basis, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida said at the time.

Guardians of Middle-earth hitting PC August 29

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 15 Agustus 2013 | 23.26

Lord of the Rings MOBA Guardians of Middle-earth will hit PC on August 29, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced today.

The PC version is in development at Zombie Studios (Blacklight: Retribution), not Monolith Productions, which created the original Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions.

According to Warner Bros., Zombie Studios worked "closely" with Monolith on the game.

All downloadable content from the console version of Guardians of Middle-earth will be included on PC. This includes all 36 Guardians, as well as map skins (The Shire, Goblintown, and Mirkwood), and the Survival gameplay mode.

Gamers who already purchased Guardians of Middle-earth for either Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 are eligible for a free download of the PC version. Warner Bros. did not detail how this promotion will work.

Guardians of Middle-earth for PC will be available on PC through Steam with full Steamworks integration. This includes matchmaking, leaderboards, Big Picture mode, and controller support.

Exclusive to the PC version of Guardians of Middle-earth will be alternate skin options for all 36 Guardians. One example given was a Gandalf the White version and Gandalf the Grey.

Guardians of Middle-earth on PC will be available for purchase in a variety of bundles. Players can buy the standard game for $20, which includes playable Guardians Gandalf, Galadriel, Hildifons, Mozgog, Bert, Legolas, and their alternate skins.

The $80 Mithril Edition includes all 36 playable Guardians and their alternate skins, as well as the Mithril Guardian Elic and a buddy key.

Guardian packs (six in all) will be available for $15 and include five Guardians and their alternate skins. Lastly, Smaug's Treasure--which features Smaug's greed Relic and in-game gold--will be available at launch for $10

Nintendo must pay $15 million to former Sony inventor in 3DS lawsuit

Nintendo must pay $15.1 million to a former Sony inventor who claimed the company's 3DS infringed on his technology patent, according to a new Bloomberg report.

The $15.1 million is half of the $30.2 million Tomita was awarded when he won his lawsuit against Nintendo in March.

He was given the option this week of accepting the $15.1 million or starting a new trial where he could have lost it all.

Nintendo senior director of corporate communications Charlie Scibetta said the company will appeal the jury's verdict, though no timetable was given for when this may happen.

Tomita's legal representation told jurors during the case that his client showed a prototype of his technology to seven Nintendo officials at the 2003 meeting, four of which would go on to assist in the creation of the 3DS.

Nintendo attorney Scott Lindvall argued that the suit was without merit, claiming the 3DS does not use key aspects of Tomita's patent. He further argued Tomita's 2003 meeting with Nintendo was merely one of many the Mario maker had with merchants selling 3D technology.

Tomita originally sued Nintendo in 2011. He claimed last month that he was entitled to $9.80 for every 3DS sold, meaning the $30.2 million in compensatory damages are just a fraction of what he could be been awarded.

Nintendo has sold nearly 32.5 million 3DS units to date.

Random Encounter - FTL: Faster Than Light

Danny, the first thing you need to do Always! is upgrade power.  Then upgrade your doors so  you can lock enemies into rooms and drain the oxygen out to kill them.  Then alternate pumping up your shields and power systems - strong shields are key to surviving most battles.

Sensors are one of the absolute last things you ever want to get.  They are pretty much useless as you will almost Always kill the ship before you can target specific enemy crew.

Also usually try to get another laser weapon and ditch the missiles.  Then you can just keep whatever missiles you have to trade or sell for other stuff you may need.  I'm kind of surprised that you've never beaten the game.  Its not terribly difficult on the easy setting.

Why female soldiers are now in Call of Duty

Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward has explained why female soldiers are only now coming to the franchise's popular multiplayer mode in this fall's Call of Duty: Ghosts.

"A lot of it was the engine," executive producer Mark Rubin told Kotaku in a new interview. "Our previous engine would not handle that. The way memory worked in the previous engine, it never would have been able to do that."

When Rubin says "that," he means the engine's ability to power a multiplayer map made up of characters with custom appearances, including being a female. Players will have over 20,000 possible combinations for their characters, including heads, body types, equipment, and gender.

"When we got a chance to re-tool the engine completely, that gave us the opportunity to make the change that we could have character customization," Rubin said. "That then gave us the opportunity to do female characters."

Gamers won't need to be worried about female characters appearing smaller than their male counterparts in Call of Duty: Ghosts, as men and women will be the same size. There will be no inherent competitive advantage to playing a female character, Rubin said.

"Even on the female characters, we can't make them smaller," Rubin said. "They have to have gear on them that makes them the same size as male players. We need to be fair. It has to be fair from a gameplay standpoint. They might look differently, but they'll fill the same area so that your hit-boxes aren't out of whack."

Blockbuster shooter franchises like Halo and Gears of War also support playable female characters in multiplayer.

Capcom digital media specialist Neidel "Haunts" Crisan confirmed the news on Twitter, answering questions about whether the PC version of the game will launch later than its Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 cousins, saying, "Yes the intention is to have them all launch at around the same time. Should have more deets on PC very soon."

In response to further queries about whether the game will ditch Microsoft's Games for Windows Live service in favour of Valve's Steamworks platform, he replied "It's coming to Steam, yes, we'll be transitioning from GFWL to Steam."

Blizzard opens site for Diablo III: Reaper of Souls

Blizzard has opened a teaser site for Diablo III: Reaper of Souls, ahead of its "special announcement" at Gamescom 2013 next week.

The site's trailer features the caption "death, at last, shall spread its wings over all," with the site's HTML showing Diablo 3 and Reaper of Souls trademarks. The quote is also printed in the original Diablo font.

Blizzard has confirmed that it will be holding a press conference at Gamescom on Wednesday August 21.

Yesterday, Blizzard filed a trademark for "The Down Below," with many speculating that it would be the title of a Diablo III expansion.

An invitation sent by Blizzard to media last month said "we're making a special announcement that's sure to capture the attention of the Heavens, Burning Hells, and all the shadowed places that lie between."

Blizzard Entertainment president and co-founder Mike Morhaime has also said the company's Gamescom announcement would be Diablo-related.

Gamescom will run from August 21 to August 25 in Cologne, Germany.

Three more executives leave Zynga

Three major Zynga executives have left the social gaming giant, CEO Don Mattrick has confirmed.

The Farmville creator's ongoing shake-up now means that chief technology officer Cadir Lee, chief operating officer David Ko, and chief people officer Colleen McCreary are no longer at the company.

A Bloomberg report last month said that another three top executives--senior vice president John Osvald, casino division vice president Jesse Janosov, and vice president Nathan Etter--were no longer working at Zynga.

The restructuring is being captained by CEO Don Mattrick, who joined Zynga in July after years as the Xbox boss at Microsoft.

"We are taking layers out of the executive rank to get senior leaders closer to important product initiatives," said Don Mattrick in an e-mail to all employees. "With that in mind, I have asked the leaders to sharpen their focus and properly densify talent to resource teams."

Mattrick went on to thank Lee, Ko, and McCreary for their work at the company. "Each person has contributed to the growth of Zynga and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Cadir Lee for his dedication in the creation of a world class technical organization during his 5 year tenure, Colleen for her work with our recruitment and people process over the last 4 years, and David Ko for the 3 years that he spent in leading various teams across the organization."

"We appreciate their contributions to Zynga's first chapter and wish them well in their future endeavors."

Prior to Mattrick joining the company, Zynga let go 500 of its staff and closed three offices. Last week it shut down developer Draw Something developer OMGPOP, after acquiring the studio in 2012 for $180 million.

39 million people now play Zynga games on a daily basis, with the company's most recent financial results confirming that daily users have dropped by over 50 percent in the last year.

Upcoming World of Warcraft update to tweak class talents and abilities

Blizzard has posted more details on its upcoming patch 5.4 for MMO World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria.

According to World of Warcraft lead designer Greg "Ghostcrawler" Street, the changes for the update will be focused on the classes of the game; low-tier talents will be buffed up while overpowered ones will be toned down. "In general, you can assume that your damage was too low or too high if you see generic buffs or nerfs to abilities," he said.

For example, The Death Knight's Death Siphon and Plague Leech will be buffed, while Anti-Magic Zone will be changed into a damage reduction spell like Power Word: Barrier. The Hunter's Silencing Shot and Readiness ability will be nerfed. Mages will receive the least number of changes, as its Frost Mastery will be fixed. Head to the post for a detailed look at the class changes. There is currently no release date announced for the patch.

World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria was released on September 25, 2012. The expansion was praised for the variety the Pandaren race and monk class brought to the table and its numerous activities and challenge mode. The game lost 700,000 players within the last three months leading up to late July this year, and puts the MMO down to 7.7 million active subscribers.

Microsoft will bring Xbox One controllers to PC in 2014

Microsoft's Xbox One controllers with work with the PC in 2014, the company has said.

The company is working to create a driver that allows compatibility with current PC games which support the Xbox 360 controller, with a Microsoft representative confirming to CVG that entirely new drivers have to be created for the Xbox One controller.

"As we've stated, the Xbox One controller, although it looks similar in many ways, shares no underlying technology with the current Xbox 360 controller," said Microsoft.

"New wireless protocol, combined with the ability to work in 'wired' mode, and the addition of features like Impulse triggers, means that new software has to be written and optimized for the PC," added the company.

"There is also some work that we need to do to make sure that existing PC games that support the Xbox 360 controller, will work with the Xbox One controller. While it seems trivial, it's actually quite a bit of dedicated work for all that to be seamless for the user."

Microsoft has said that it has spent "hundreds of millions" designing the Xbox One controller.

"We know people want to use the Xbox One controller on their PC, and we do too--we expect to have the functionality available in 2014," concluded Microsoft.

Microsoft has recently said that the Xbox One will not require a connected Kinect in order to function.

The Xbox One will be released this November for $499/€499/£425. The controller will be sold for $60.

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Minggu, 11 Agustus 2013 | 23.26

I am sorry to keep asking this of you lads but could you please tell me...

When are you doing the Falskaar mod?

It's been a few weeks now, since you said Seb that it will be next week.

I understand that it's a huge mod and more time may be needed to allow your Top 5 show to do it some justice.

I have to ask because then if I keep going on about it, then perhaps one day the Falskaar mod will make an appearance.

If others also wish to see it, as I do?

Divinity: Dragon Commander Review

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Sabtu, 10 Agustus 2013 | 23.26

Divinity: Dragon Commander is an unexpected delight. This prequel to Larian Studio's Divinity series of role-playing games skillfully merges real-time and turn-based strategy with RPGs, arcade action, and the cutthroat world of politics (both modern and medieval). Somehow this mixture works--and it probably has something to do with the ability to play as a jetpack-wearing Dragon.

While blazing around as dragon is certainly fun, the intriguing part of the game is the campaign's role-playing aspect. The story follows the exploits of an unnamed half-human, half-dragon prince who must defeat his depraved siblings to seize control of his late father's war-ravaged empire. In between turns on the strategic map, you traverse your ship and converse with the characters on board in a manner similar to Starcraft II, except that in Dragon Commander, these interactions are fleshed out with options and consequences. Early on, you receive a retinue of generals, each of whom has personal issues. How you handle these can benefit the empire, improve a general's stats, or, conversely, cause major problems for the war effort.

Emperors-to-be must also delve into the cutthroat world of politics. The various non-human races of the empire send emissaries to the royal court, and their support can impact the war. The undead are religious zealots; the dwarves are plutocratic capitalists; the lizard folk tend to be liberals who promote individual freedom; imps are simple technocrats; and elves are radical egalitarians and staunch environmentalists. Every few turns, there is a council meeting where legislation is brought up for the emperor's consideration. These issues tend to mirror contemporary political concerns like gay marriage, euthanasia, medicinal marijuana, gun control, and genetically modified foods. Each ambassador gives their take on the legislation, and you must choose between your own personal positions, the seemingly greater good, or the most popular position amongst the council members.

While decisions often merely affect relations with different races, some have tangible strategic effects, like a conscription law that reduces the cost of purchasing units. These laws can lead to humorous situations beyond the always-amusing impotent rage of displeased ambassadors. For example, you could follow the elf line and agree to allow trade unions, increase the pay of workers, and give them state funded holiday--and then go along with the imps' plan to lobotomize workers for greater productivity.

Another noteworthy aspect of the story is the royal marriage that you must take part in. At first, the choice of a bride influences race relations, but eventually, there are story segments in which you can sway your chosen bride. For example, as per elven customs, the elf princess is a strict vegetarian and environmentalist, refrains from the consumption of alcohol, and opposes personality cults due to her egalitarian ideals. Through conversations, she can be turned into a meat-eating alcoholic who poses nude for statues of herself and supports genetically modified foods. Then, her corruption complete, you can sacrifice her for personal gain and move on to the next wife.

Outside of these political aspects, Dragon Commander's campaign is similar to campaigns from the Total War series. There is a turn-based strategic mode where you build armies and buildings, conquer provinces, earn cards that affect battle, buy unit and dragon upgrades, and make combat moves. Rivals are defeated once their capitals are conquered and all of their remaining land, gold, research points, and units fall under the player's control. Once all enemy capitals have fallen, the game enters the next chapter and a new map. Unfortunately, this is an often disappointing transition, as the player unceremoniously drops into a new campaign map without a hard-won territory's cash, research, and card flow. This frustration can be avoided by banking gold, points, and cards before crushing the last capital. Incidentally, banking is also a good way to get more opportunities to boost (or destroy) race relations.

Unoccupied provinces fall without a fight, and capturing neutral territories bequeaths you with free units. However, most turns involve at least one battle. You can either resolve combat automatically or fight in RTS mode, but you must make this decision carefully, because the dragon commander can only fight in one battle per turn. Likewise, the generals may only lead troops in one auto-resolved battle per turn, which leaves most battles in the imperial army's hands. Before combat begins, the game displays your chance of winning the engagement. This can be altered by selecting a general to lead the combat and playing various cards that grant advantages like mercenary troops, buffs for particular types of units, or the use of dragon powers that have not been researched.

Valve closes two-man San Francisco office

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 09 Agustus 2013 | 23.26

Valve has closed its remote two-man studio in San Francisco eight months after acquiring the duo, the company has confirmed.

Valve San Francisco was formed in December 2012 by ex-Popcap staff Tod Semple and Jeff Gates, with Semple credited as the programmer for the original Plants vs. Zombies. The pair will now launch their own studio, Temple Gates Games.

"Jeff [Gates] and I are working on indie games again," said Semple to IGN. "We were working for Valve in a remote office in San Mateo. It turned out that there weren't many benefits for either side in that arrangement.

"Valve was super cool about it and is letting us continue to work on our game and is also giving us the office. So Jeff and I are starting up a new company called Temple Gates Games."

Between them, the duo has worked on projects at LucasArts, Maxis, Blizzard, and PopCap.

"We were big fans of their prior work," said a Valve representative. "We worked with them during their startup phase, but they're independent now and still working on their game. We wish them the best of luck."

Earlier this week, an entry for Left 4 Dead 3 was spotted on Valve's internal project tracker during an office tour for the Dota 2 subreddit community.

Lost actor teases "new Uncharted"

Lost and The Lord of the Rings actor Dominic Monaghan may have revealed an all-new Uncharted game.

Speaking during a conference call regarding his work on the live-action series for The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, Monaghan referenced a "new Uncharted" game when discussing his thoughts on the industry.

"I'll always stay focused on the gaming world and see what's coming up," he said. "The new Uncharted I'm really excited to see how that's going to be and obviously both new gaming systems."

The most recent core Uncharted game was Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, which released in November 2011 on PlayStation 3.

Series creator Naughty Dog recently shipped The Last of Us. The company has no new announced games.

Monaghan also said during the conference that he has a game idea that he is "hopefully" going to pitch to 2K, though he did not give any details on what this game may be.

Monaghan--who played the Hobbit Merry in The Lord of the Rings and Charlie on Lost--may not be a part of The Bureau: XCOM Declassified itself, but said he would be up for playing the lead role in a game someday.

"Yeah, of course. It's like saying 'would you eat a whole pizza?' Yes, I would do that," he said.

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified launches August 20 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. The final installment in the live-action video series was released today and is available below.

Sakurai: "Players don't know how hard we work"

Smash Bros. lead designer Masahiro Sakurai believes gamers don't fully understand how much time and effort is invested into a project like Nintendo's iconic fighting game series.

"The players don't know about how hard we work. That's not a problem because that's the case for any product, but it's important to remember that you can't take anything for granted," Sakurai said in his latest Famitsu post, translated by Nintendo Life.

His comments came as part of a columna regarding the development process for the Smash Bros. series, specifically the amount of work that goes into creating each game's roster. Sakurai has spoken of this challenge before, saying in June that choosing the roster is stressful "almost to the brink of death."

In his Famitsu post this week, Sakurai said much the same thing, but explained any pain he feels during development is eased over time.

"Projects take a while, and you run into difficult and painful times," Sakurai said. "Some people have to bow out of it. To be honest, I've sometimes thought about what I'm earning for myself, going through all this life-changing struggle. But the pain I feel at the time goes away over time, and yet the game itself always remains. Players talk about the fun and so forth behind the game for years to come, and they still play it."

Sakurai added that he is often asked by media if he feels pressure to deliver when creating a high-profile project like the new Smash Bros. game for Wii U and 3DS.

"Like I've written before, on a personal level, I don't feel anything like pressure. It's really fun work," Sakurai said. "Sometimes you have to resign yourself to the fact that things will work out the way they're meant to work out. But you need to funnel your regrets to the next project and work as hard as you can on that. The pain goes away, but your work always remains."

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for 3DS are expected to launch in 2014. There will be no cross-platform play between the two.

Earlier this week, Nintendo confirmed Luigi as a playable character for the game. He joins previously announced characters Pikmin & Olimar, Villager, Mario, Donkey Kong, Mega Man, Wii Fit Trainer, Link, Samus, Kirby, Fox, Pikachu, Bowser, and Pit.

For more on the new Smash Bros. game, check out GameSpot's interview with Sakurai.

New PS4 UK preorders no longer guaranteed for launch

Gamers who preorder a PlayStation 4 in the United Kingdom are no longer guaranteed that their system will arrive for launch day, according to a new Eurogamer report.

A message from retailer ShopTo reads, "Sony have confirmed all PlayStation 4 pre-orders placed from 6th August will now not be guaranteed for launch. You can still pre-order PS4 with us in case we receive cancellations and can fulfill your order for launch."

The UK arm of Amazon confirmed a similar situation, saying that "due to high demand," PS4 orders placed on or after August 6 may not arrive on launch date. "We will ship orders as soon as we receive sufficient inventory," the messages reads.

A ShopTo representative told Eurogamer that this directive stems from Sony and applies to all European retailers.

The PS4 launches worldwide this holiday season, alongside the Xbox One, though Sony has yet to announce a specific release date for its next-generation console.

Battlefield 4's second-screen features exclusive to Xbox One, PS4, and PC

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Selasa, 06 Agustus 2013 | 23.26

The second-screen features in Battlefield 4, which allows players to tinker with maps and loadouts via mobile or tablet while in-game, won't be available in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game, DICE has confirmed.

In an interview with Engadget, Battlelog assistant producer Jesper Nielsen said that the lack of current-gen support for Battlelog's Battlescreen--as DICE calls it--is down to the PC and next-gen versions of Battlelog being entirely based on the web.

"Battlelog is powered by the web, and that has a lot of implications," he said. "There are a lot of different things you can do, things you can do faster, rather than building stuff in native code."

Nielsen did not mention if Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions can use a tablet to operate Battlefield 4's new Commander Mode, as was shown during the game's E3 2013 presentation.

Nielsen said another big bonus is that the new web-based Battlelog will allow DICE to deploy patches and updates to the Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 versions of the game a lot easier than it would for 360 and PS3.

"It's going to be a lot easier for us to actually update things from the in-game Battlelog than would otherwise be the case," he said. "You'd have to do patches normally; here we can actually do things almost by the flick of a finger."

Nielsen said DICE's experiments in second-screen gaming was a learning experience for the studio, and that the team also looked at using the Xbox One's screen snapping feature to display Battlelog.

"The real test once we get it out to the players and see how they use it," added Nielsen, "both when they play and don't play. That will teach us a lot and help us innovate even more in this field. We don't have the answers to all the questions in this space yet, so it's definitely a bit of an experiment, but we're very confident with some of the steps we've taken to provide a truly meaningful and valuable second-screen experience."

DICE said yesterday that August's Gamescom 2013 trade show will be "one hell of a show" for Battlefield 4.

Battlefield 4 will launch for PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 on October 29. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions will follow.

Naughty Dog reveals The Last of Us alternate ending image

Naughty Dog has released an image depicting a scene from an alternate ending for the studio's critically acclaimed post-apocalyptic action game The Last of Us.

On Twitter, creative director Neil Druckmann teased, "See how it originally ended." This was accompanied by an image depicting a woman who appears to be torturing main character Joel.

Gamers will learn more about The Last of Us' alternate endings during a PAX Prime panel next month, the developer first said last week but recently confirmed.

Druckmann said previously that Naughty Dog considered "about three or four ideas" for The Last of Us' ending "before finding the ending that worked best for the story we wanted to tell."

The panel--Pitching The Last of Us--will feature Druckmann and game director Bruce Straley. The pair will discuss the process of selling Sony on Naughty Dog's first Mature-rated game.

"But really, Neil and Bruce will pull back the curtain to show you their original pitch for The Last of Us… and giving everyone at this panel a look at how close or far the final game ended up from the original pitch," reads a line from the panel's description.

Ubisoft says there's an overall ending to Assassin's Creed

Ubisoft has said that it has a planned ending for Assassin's Creed, and that the series follows an overall arc despite its annual release schedule.

Speaking in an interview with Eurogamer, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag director Ashraf IsmaiI said that the series' multiple development teams all follow an overall arc. "We have multiple development teams, then we have the brand team that sits on top and is filled with writers and designers concerned with the series' overall arc," said Ismail.

"So there is an overall arc," he continued, "and each iteration has its place inside this."

Assassin's Creed has attracted its share of criticism for adopting an annual release schedule, but Ismail says that the team has an overall ending in sight, and there are multiple ways for Ubisoft to get there.

"We have an idea of where the end is, what the end is," explained Ismail. "But of course [Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot] announced we are a yearly title, we ship one game a year. So depending on the setting, depending on what fans want, we've given ourselves room to fit more in this arc. But there is an end."

Ismail also says one of the advantages to having multiple studios working on the franchise simultaneously is that the various teams get to work in conjunction to plan plot points and characters ahead of time.

"We're now able to seed stuff earlier and earlier in our games," Ismail said. "So for example in [ACIV] we have Edward, who was seeded in AC3. But there's a lot more stuff in our game that is hinting at other possibilities."

Ubisoft Toronto, which is currently readying the release of Splinter Cell: Blacklist, has already begun work on 2014's Assassin's Creed game. Ubisoft itself has said it does not expect ACIV to outperform its predecessor commercially.

For more information on this year's game, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, check out a recent Ask GameSpot video.

id Software's first Doom 4 project "didn't have the passion and soul"

Bethesda and id Software have spoken about the now-cancelled version of Doom 4, saying that the studio's original attempt at the game didn't feel like a Doom game.

A new version of Doom 4 is now underway at id Software, but in an interview with IGN studio director Tim Willits spoke about why it cancelled its first attempt.

"It wasn't one thing," explained Willits. "It wasn't like the art was bad, or the programming was bad. Every game has a soul. Every game has a spirit. When you played Rage, you got the spirit. And [Doom 4] did not have the spirit, it did not have the soul, it didn't have a personality. It had a bit of schizophrenia, a little bit of an identity crisis. It didn't have the passion and soul of what an id game is."

"Everyone knows the feeling of Doom, but it's very hard to articulate," added Willits.

Doom 4 was originally confirmed in May 2008 via a press release, though the project was scrapped in late 2011. Bethesda confirmed in April 2013 that development on the game had been rebooted, after sources at the time claimed the original version of Doom 4 borrowed many of its creative elements from modern shooters such as Call of Duty.

Bethesda vice president of marketing Pete Hines added that Doom 4 needs to be worth the wait. "If it was like the quintessential, 'yup, that's Doom 4,' then we wouldn't be having this conversation," he said.

"But, it was something that we looked at and the id guys looked at and said, look, it's not even that something is necessarily bad. But is it good enough? You can make a game and say, 'that's not a bad game, but it's not as good as an Elder Scrolls game should be,' and there's a difference…it's not great. It's not amazing. It's not what people have waited all this time for. It needs to be like 'this was totally worth the wait.'"

"I think what the guys at id are working on is…they're pushing the boundaries and challenging themselves. I don't want anybody to look at id's next project and have this reaction that it's still stuck in the '90s," concluded Hines.

While images of Doom 4 have surfaced online, these are believed to have been from the now-scrapped version. "Those images have nothing to do with what you're gonna see in Doom 4," said id Software design director Matthew Hooper.

The developer recently tweeted a seven-second video showing off what appears to be a menu for Call of Duty: Ghosts featuring the words "options," "online play" and "squads."

Rubin did not give any additional information about the video clip. Activision will show off the game's multiplayer component for the first time on August 14 at a Los Angeles event.

Valve's Dota 2 International Championship begins

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Minggu, 04 Agustus 2013 | 23.26

World's best teams descend on Valve's headquarters in Seattle to compete for over $2.8 million.

Valve's yearly Dota 2 Championships, The International, which is now in its third year, have begun with nearly 400,000 concurrent live viewers within hours of going live.

The world's best Dota 2 teams have descended onto Valve's headquarters in Seattle to compete for what is now over $2.8 million in prize money. Teams have flown in from around the world, including 2011 International Champions Na'Vi from Ukraine, 2012 International Champions Invictus Gaming from China, and 2013 favorites Alliance from Sweden.

In addition to the main tournament, Valve will also be hosting a 1v1 Solo Championship, and an All-Star match with players voted on by the fans. Star players competing in both include Danil "Dendi" Ishutin from Na'Vi, Luo "Ferrari" Feichi from Invictus Gaming, Jonathan "Loda" Berg from Alliance, and Chai "Mushi" Yee Fung from Orange Esports. A full list of teams and competitors can be found on the official International site.

"Despite the importance of the tournament itself, I think players will remember the All Stars and 1v1 matches with great fondness," Dota 2 analyst Bruno Carlucci told GameSpot. "One can only imagine how much some of these legends dreamt of playing with each other on a LAN environment, or even, for some of the youngest competitors, face their idols in a 1v1 and prove themselves to the world as the best individually skilled player."

The prize pool, which continues to increase by $2.50 with every purchase of the $10 Interactive Compendium, is the largest amount ever given out for a single-event in competitive gaming/eSports history.

"TI3 is already the tournament with the biggest prize pool in eSports," Carlucci said. "With such an amazing start in stream numbers, I'm betting it will soon become the biggest tournament in stream viewer numbers as well."

Last year Riot's Season 2 World Championships peaked at 1.1 million concurrent viewers watching online only, making it the most watched competitive gaming event of all time.

The International 3 Main Event will begin on August 7 at Benaroya Hall in Seattle, Washington. The entire event will be streamed on the in-game spectator client Dota TV, and on TwitchTV. GameSpot eSports will be at the event to sit down with Valve regarding the release of Dota 2 and The International, and provide live coverage all week long.

Top Five Skyrim Mods of the Week - Kevin VanNord and the Kevin VanSword

@NovahJCMP PC as in the machine, definitely do so. Purely from the gaming standpoint, apart from mods you also get some neat discounts on PC games. If you are serious about it, make sure you get some advice and make a custom-built one, not a pre-built PC. More often than not you're going to get more performance for less money with a custom-built PC.

As for Skyrim PC version, wait a bit and go get The Elder Scrolls Anthology with all Elder Scrolls games, because if you get bored with Skyrim, you may want to play the previous games and there are mods that can make both Morrowind and Oblivion look pretty up-to-date.

Xbox One "witch hunt" somewhat unjustified, says Carmack

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 02 Agustus 2013 | 23.26

Industry veteran John Carmack, who cofounded Doom studio id Software, believes the blowback surrounding Microsoft's since-reversed Xbox One policies was somewhat unjustified.

"I think the witch hunt was a little bit unjustified there," Carmack said during this keynote address at QuakeCon. "I personally am extremely fond of having all of my digital purchases in a curated garden. All of my iTunes, all of my Amazon stuff, all of my Steam things. And it's a positive thing."

The days of physical media are numbered, Carmack said, adding that a digital-only future is clearly the way forward.

"Yeah, you can have better and worse ways of doing that, but we are very quickly going to be past the age of having a game that you hold in your hands on optical media," Carmack said.

"It probably won't be many years before we wind up with SKUs that just have the optical drives deleted and everybody will just be getting it through the net," he added. "The future is obvious right there and it will be good for us in general."

Carmack also said he believes fears are overblown over the possibility that the Xbox One's new Kinect camera will snoop on users.

"If you go back ten years, the idea that everyone would carry around a phone that has your GPS-located position at all times would cause the tinfoil hat crowd to go absolutely crazy," Carmack said.

He said it is possible that the government will have backdoors into technology like smartphones and potentially Kinect to track consumers, but "that's pretty much the situation…we just kind of carry on."

He pointed out that the situation with Kinect is already in existence on laptops, which have had built-in webcams for years.

At the end of the day, Carmack said "we'll get used to it," because potential security concerns that come with new technology are "just inevitable."

Whore of the Orient gameplay footage emerges

First gameplay footage of Team Bondi's next-generation game revealed, showing third-person cover, melee combat, and gunplay.

Gameplay footage for L.A. Noire developer Team Bondi's next-generation action game Whore of the Orient has appeared online.

The minute-long video was acquired by Videogamer from a "trusted source" and shows off third-person cover mechanics, melee combat, and gunplay in a bustling city.

Check out the footage below.

Whore of the Orient puts players into 1936 Shanghai, the "most corrupt and decadent city on the planet," according to a since-deleted page on the Team Bondi website.

Team Bondi recently received $200,000 in funding from the Australian government to help finance the project.

After the release of L.A. Noire in 2011, KMM Interactive bought the assets and intellectual property rights to Team Bondi's work, including Whore of the Orient. A Warner Bros. logo appeared on the Team Bondi website, though the publisher has yet to give any information regarding its involvement with the game.

Whore of the Orient is reportedly being readied for a release in 2015, though it is unclear if the rumored layoffs at Team Bondi have affected this release window.
