Just Cause Dev's Hunting Game Adds Kangaroo-Filled Australian Expansion

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 27 Februari 2015 | 23.25

Free-to-play hunting game The Hunter, created by Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios subsidiary Expansive Worlds, has reached a major new milestone.

The game now has more than 5 million registered players. This makes it "the largest virtual hunting community in the world," according to the developer. Expansive Worlds notes that 80 percent of all players joined in the past 22 months, suggesting interest in the game is increasing.

The Hunter is arguably the most well-known hunting game for PC, while there are pages and pages of hunting titles available for mobile devices. Another top hunting video game brand is Activision's Cabela's Hunting franchise.

Expansive Worlds also released more stats about The Hunter to mark the milestone.

To date, The Hunter players have:

  • Walked 72 million kilometers.
  • Spent a total of 2500 years in-game.
  • Hit their targets more than 63 million times (but missed more than 50 million times).
  • Found more than 240 000 chantarelles, 1826 rare golden eggs and 54 million not quite so rare piles of poop.

In addition, Expansive Worlds on Friday released The Hunter's next expansion. The add-on, called "Bushranger's Run," is a new hunting reserve set in the Australian outback.

Among other creatures, players can hunt kangaroos in the new expansion. Kangaroos are, according to Expansive Worlds, the fastest, most agile animal in The Hunter, making them tough to take down. Check out the image gallery below for a closer look at the add-on.

In addition to The Hunter's Bushranger's Run expansion, Expansive Worlds is working on The Hunter: Primal, a dinosaur-themed spinoff. Development on that game will not affect production on the regular version of The Hunter, the studio previously promised.

The Hunter franchise has been in development since 2009.

Blizzard Teases New "Bionic-Grade" Overwatch Character

Blizzard Entertainment has released a cryptic teaser for its upcoming PC shooter Overwatch.

Released on Twitter is the fake magazine cover, showing a silhouette of an unspecified character.

Given the language featured on the cover ("Lifting Legend," "Bionic-Grade Boot Camp Body") it appears that Blizzard is teasing a character with supernatural strength.

The teaser also includes a QR code. When scanned, it says "Together we are strong," furthering the strength theme of the page.

What does it all mean? It sounds like Blizzard is gearing up to announce the latest hero for Overwatch. A total of twelve characters for the game have been revealed so far.

Blizzard will be talking more about Overwatch during PAX East next weekend in Boston. GameSpot will report live from the show all weekend long.

Announced during Blizzcon in November, Overwatch is a first-person shooter that bears some resemblance to Valve's Team Fortress 2. The game represents Blizzard's first new franchise in seventeen years.

GTA 5 PC Pictures Flaunt New Graphical Peak

Rockstar has published a selection of 14 hi-res images for the PC edition of Grand Theft Auto V, showcasing the enhanced visual fidelity and artistic touches that can be achieved with high-end computers.

The gallery, found below, demonstrates the enhanced visuals of both the urban and rural locations in Los Santos. Denser foliage, higher resolution textures, and a host of additional special effects combine to depict the game at its graphical peak.

The Grand Theft Auto V PC release date has been delayed three times since the project was first announced in 2012. The game was initially scheduled to ship in "Fall 2014," and then in late January, and then on March 24. This third delay pushes the release back by three more weeks, to April 14.

"Our apologies to PC gamers worldwide who have been counting down the days until the launch of the game, but a bit more time is needed to ensure that the game is as polished as possible," Rockstar said in a recent statement.

As a gesture of goodwill, players who have pre-ordered the game will receive an additional $200,000 in-game cash bonus to use in GTA Online.

This brings the total bonus for pre-orders to $1.5 million ($500,000 for Grand Theft Auto V, $500,000 for Grand Theft Auto Online, and $300,000 bonus for pre-ordering before March 9).

Rockstar also revealed on Tuesday that Heists, the new gameplay mode for GTA Online, is scheduled to launch on March 10. The Heists mode tasks a team of up to four players to pull off a spate of raids and robberies across Los Santos and Blaine County.

These heists are thought to be complex, multi-part missions, with each player taking on a different role. New vehicles, weapons, clothing, and sundry items will arrive with the Heists update.

Below is a collection of new images released by Rockstar which offers a glimpse into Heists mode.

"Over the next couple of weeks, we will have more information about the launch of Heists and about other new features that we will release with it," Rockstar added.

GTA V for PC will also feature a new editing tool called the Rockstar Editor. This will give players a "full suite" of tools that they can use to create and publishing clips to the Rockstar Social Club and YouTube.
