Wii system sales cross 100 million units

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 31 Juli 2013 | 23.26

Nintendo's Wii console, released in November 2006, has crossed 100 million units in global life-to-date sales. The milestone was achieved during Nintendo's April-June quarter.

To date, lifetime sales for the system stand at 100.04 million units. The Wii is now Nintendo's third gaming machine to have sold over 100 million units, joining the DS (153.93 million) and the Game Boy (118.69 million).

More than 872 million games for the console have been sold to date, with Mario Kart Wii the top non-bundled game at 34.26 million copies sold since launch.

By comparison, Microsoft's Xbox 360 has sold 78.2 million systems to date, while the PlayStation 3 is believed to have sold around 77 million units worldwide since launch.

Nintendo's latest console, the Wii U, has not yet been the runaway success that the original Wii was. As revealed today in an earnings report, the system sold only 160,000 units during the April-June quarter, boosting lifetime sales to 3.61 million consoles. The original Wii outsold the Wii U in the quarter by 500,000 units.

14.44 million Wii U games have been sold thus far. New Super Mario Bros. U is the system's top non-bundled game, moving 2.15 million units to date.

Nintendo plans to sell 9 million Wii U units before March 2014. The company is hoping to spur console sales by releasing numerous first-party titles in the coming months, including The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, Wii Party U, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Super Mario 3D World, and Wii Fit U.

Take-Two hints at Red Dead Redemption 2

During a recent earnings call, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick teased a sequel to 2010's critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption, saying he believes the game has the potential to be a "permanent" franchise, similar to the James Bond series.

"It's been our goal not just to preserve and grow the Grand Theft Auto franchise, but also to build other franchises that we think can be permanent, whether that's the Red Dead franchise or the Borderlands franchise or the BioShock franchise or others, Civilization, for example," Zelnick said.

The executive also claimed that Take-Two has a unique approach to building franchises compared to its competitors. In his view, it is smarter to make "permanent" franchises that consumers will continually spend time and money on over the years instead of "making hay while the sun shines."

"Our goal is to try to create permanent franchises, that's the unique goal in the industry. Our competitors do not see it that way. Our competitors' view is that our franchise will have a certain life, and at the end of that life, you move onto the next thing, so you better make hay while the sun shines," Zelnick said. "Our view is to the contrary. The best franchises are permanent franchises. Outside of our business you can look at James Bond, for example."

Red Dead Redemption was released in May 2010 to nearly universal praise. The game was developed primarily by Rockstar San Diego and is a spiritual successor to 2004's Red Dead Revolver, which Rockstar Games purchased from Capcom in 2002 after its cancellation.

If the Red Dead Redemption franchise is to return, it could be one of the multiple next-generation games Take-Two currently has in development. In May, CEO Strauss Zelnick said, "We also have a extraordinary pipeline of titles in development for next-generation platforms, including groundbreaking new intellectual property and releases from our proven franchises."

Ex-EA CEO says focusing too much on mobile graphics is a "road to ruin"

Former EA CEO John Riccitiello has said pushing for console-quality graphics on mobile devices can be a "road to ruin" for publishers that don't work out how those games can provide new gameplay experiences.

Speaking at an event hosted by Casual Connect (via Polygon), Riccitiello said "investing in better graphics without figuring out what differentiating gameplay you're going to have--without thinking of how gameplay rewards players--is a road to ruin."

"Prettier games cost more to make. Better games satisfy consumers," he added.

Riccitiello referenced to the late 90s to illustrate his point, speaking about how the push for 3D graphics in most strategy games caused costs to skyrocket but didn't increase sales."Revenue remained the same because they weren't innovating."

Other genres, such as action adventure games, succeeded because the experience would have been impossible without the 3D graphics, he said.

Returning the discussion to furthering games development on increasingly powerful mobile devices, Riccitiello said to think about optimizing gameplay rather than focus on graphics. "If you're looking at more powerful CPUs and GPUs, think more about how that creates the opportunity to build an experience you've not seen before--a different kind of gameplay," Riccitiello said. "What gameplay wasn't possible before that can be fundamentally optimized?"

Few publishers who have games which chart in the best-selling mobile charts manage to recreate the success, added Riccitello. "You can either hope to be lucky twice, or you can figure out an answer that I think is vitally important for the health of the mobile business," he added.

"Developers need to build brands. Games that don't build a brand will not be around in a decade. Will Clash of Clans be with us in 25 years? Madden turns 25 this year. Will Candy Crush be around next year and still be doing a few million a day?"

Riccitiello resigned from EA in March, after six years at the company. The publisher has yet to announce his successor.

Batman: Arkham Origins multiplayer mode revealed, not coming to Wii U

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today announced the multiplayer mode for Batman: Arkham Origins, revealing it is in development at Brink and Enemy Territory developer Splash Damage, and won't be available on Wii U.

The online mode--Invisible Predator Online--will be supported on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC versions. No mention was made of why the Wii U had been passed over for the game mode, and a Warner Bros. representative could not be reached for comment at press time.

The asymmetrical 3 vs. 3 vs. 2 mode meshes traditional Arkham gameplay with third-person shooter mechanics, according to Warner Bros.

The game mode supports eight players divided into three groups: three thugs from Joker's gang taking on three members of Bane's group, while Batman and Robin attempt to take out members of both criminal groups.

GameSpot recently went hands-on with the Invisible Predator Online mode for Batman: Arkham Origins. For more, check out GameSpot's impressions.

Batman: Arkham Origins launches October 25 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, and PC. It features an expanded Gotham City and is set years before the events of the original games. The game is in development at WB Games Montreal, not Rocksteady Studios.

A portable version, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, is in development at Armature Studio for PlayStation Vita and 3DS. The game launches alongside the console versions on October 25.

Little Big Planet dev's next game delayed

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 29 Juli 2013 | 23.26

Little Big Planet developer Media Molecule today announced that its next game, PlayStation Vita title Tearaway, has been delayed to November 22.

The game was originally scheduled to launch in mid-October, but studio director Siobhan Reddy explained on the PlayStation Blog that Media Molecule needed more time to finish it.

"We are now in the final stages of development, and have come to the realization that we need a little more time than we anticipated to finish the game; to tie all of the mechanics, story and amazing visuals together into the adventure that we want you to play," Reddy said.

Reddy said Media Molecule is "really, really sorry" for the delay.

"Thanks for being patient, please don't be too cross with us, lots of love, Mm xxxx."

Tearaway, a papercraft platformer, was announced last year and will make use of numerous PS Vita features, including the system's cameras and rear touch pad.

Media Molecule revealed an all-new experimental PlayStation 4 game at the console's announcement event in New York City in February.

Microsoft: Xbox One controller $60, headset $25

Official Microsoft Store lists prices for next-generation console accessories; play-and-charge kit bundle will be $75.

The official Microsoft Store has been updated with pricing information for a range of Xbox One accessories, revealing extra controllers will go for $60 and additional headsets for $25.

An Xbox One wireless controller with play-and-charge kit will sell for $75, while the play-and-charge kit alone will go for $25.

It is not clear if the Xbox One accessory pricing information is final. GameSpot has reached out to Microsoft for comment.

All Xbox One units include one wireless controller, though the system will not come bundled with a pack-in headset. Players can still use voice commands out of the box, though, thanks to Kinect.

Competitor Sony will offer extra DualShock 4 controllers and PlayStation Eye units for the PlayStation 4 at $60 each. The Xbox One ($500) and PS4 ($400) launch later this year.

Fez II canceled

Fez II has been canceled, developer Phil Fish has announced.

"Fez II is cancelled," reads an update on the Polytron website.

"I am done. I take the money and I run," he added. "This is as much as I can stomach. This is isn't the result of any one thing, but the end of a long, bloody campaign. You win."

On Twitter, Fish said he is getting out of the game industry entirely, "because I choose not to put up with this abuse anymore."

Fez II was announced in early June 2013 at the Horizon Indie Game Conference in Los Angeles. Outside of its existence, not much was known about the game.

The original Fez was released on the Xbox 360 in 2012, after five years of development, and saw a PC release in 2013. Fish's journey to release the game was chronicled in Indie Game: The Movie.

The game has sold 200,000 units on the Xbox 360.

DARK Review

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Sabtu, 27 Juli 2013 | 23.26

Can you imagine how deliciously powerful it would feel to be a vampire? Sustaining yourself on the blood of your victims, you could turn to mist and rush through the air, preying on the weak and hunting down the forces that would see the end of you and your kind. Dark hints at such an existence, but this vampire stealth game fails to make such bloodsucking dreams and nightmares come to life. Rather than pull you into the supernatural drama it tries to author, Dark devolves into unintentional comedy, the ridiculously bad dialogue and hilarious artificial intelligence inspiring fits of laughter. This game is both insane and inane, but at least its overall stupidity gives you something to cackle at.

That one guard will perform pirouettes forever and ever. He must be stopped at all costs!

The laughs start with the story, which casts you as Eric Bane, a half-vampire looking to suck the blood out of more powerful vampires before you turn into a mindless ghoul. You spend a lot of time in a nightclub called Sanctuary, where you might at first enjoy the colorful cel-shaded visuals and awkwardly dancing patrons before you start giggling at the bad dialogue. Says a vampire DJ about another powerful bloodsucker: "The women that work there for him are really f***ed up. I think he put some vampire s*** on them." Says another: "The guy more or less owns the city. He's like the vampire dictator, man." A Mass Effect-like dialogue wheel offers dialogue options, but not any actual choices, though you can string together different parts of conversation in ways that make the insipid dialogue even more nonsensical.

So off you go into the night to exercise your sneaking skills and do vampiric things, like knocking out dunderheaded rent-a-cops from behind when you aren't plunging your teeth into their necks. It's clear right away that something's amiss in Dark, however. Guards engage in conversation before beginning their patrol patterns, which is a typical atmospheric touch in stealth games, but some chats go on forever without unveiling any important truths or infusing Dark with any personality. When alerted, guards deliver canned lines that don't always make sense in context, the same snippets of recorded dialogue overlapping with each other and lone enemies calling out to nonexistent comrades. Bad animations, mediocre voice acting, jittery cutscenes, and disappearing sound effects round out the first impressions, though some nice audiovisual touches, such as the satisfying whoosh of your shadow leap ability, give you hope for the coming hours.

Unfortunately, Dark never capitalizes on its few strengths. The basic gameplay is bone-dry stealth--you crouch and hug walls, at least when the cover mechanic decides to work, while trying to avoid the none-too-watchful eyes of guards and attacking them when you need to. You may also drag corpses away if you have the opportunity, and need to avoid litter lest you call attention to yourself, though it isn't always clear whether or not nearby watchmen notice or care. There are a few visual references to Thief in the early levels, but you never need to keep to the shadows, in spite of the allusions (and in spite of this game's own name).

You also have some passive and active vampire powers that let you, for example, confuse enemies in the area for a short period of time, or rush across a good distance and assassinate a guard. You need to kill guards and read scattered personal digital assistants and emails to earn points to unlock and improve these abilities, and you drain blood from your enemies to power them. At first it's fun to fool around with these skills, since they're the only way of mixing up the generic sneaking. Flying through the air and felling the cookie-cutter character models can give you a sense of accomplishment, as can successfully sneaking through a heavily defended warehouse without alarming the sentries. But about halfway through the game, you realize that you can use your shadow leap ability to exploit your way through levels, propelling yourself onto ledges and other platforms and avoiding or eliminating entire swaths of patrols in the process.

The rotten enemy AI doesn't always hinder you; in fact, it often seems intent on assisting your efforts. For instance, you might hide in a bush, one guard after another approaching you, perhaps after seeing you lurk in the area. You can knock them out one at a time, the guards acting as if they can't figure out where that corpse came from, even after staring right at you as you performed the kill. To make matters worse, Dark draws out levels during such circumstances, spawning new guards when the AI is alerted until the supply runs out, which makes levels tedious. You even see some of these guards appear right in front of you out of nowhere, which completely corrupts the core design of a stealth game.

Elsewhere, enemies jitter in place or against each other before teleporting somewhere else--again undermining the very idea of a stealth game. Sometimes, guards get stuck standing and looking in one spot in a way that keeps you from reaching your destination. And what's really hysterical is when guards shoot at you so that you can see bullets landing on you, yet the shots don't register. The lack of continuity between checkpoints also annihilates Dark's design consistency. In certain locations, triggering a checkpoint causes all the enemies in the area you just left to disappear, only to have new enemies and characters materialize there without any explanation.

There are some good ideas in here, like machines that produce a field of UV rays that injure you and dull your vampire powers. And every so often, a level comes together, with enemy routines created in a way that allows you to satisfyingly slink by. But those bright spots are exceptions in Dark's poorly crafted areas. Some levels at first look open-ended, inviting you to experiment with different approaches, but actually push you down a single linear path, because it's the only path the AI and its rigid patterns can reasonably handle. Other levels feature a mishmash of enemies, alarms, and behaviors that seem thoughtlessly put together, inspiring you to exploit your way through rather than devise a clever plan of action.

Instead of ramping up the challenge and excitement, Dark actually gets much easier as it progresses, and the final boss fight (which involves walking around as its main mechanic) and subsequent moral choice (in which you have no emotional investment) aren't gut punches, but rather are gut-bustingly bad. In its favor, Dark mixes up its pace in the final levels, dropping some narrative surprises on you and depositing you into a few unexpected locales. But by then, you've endured too much banality for a few bewildering plot twists to suck any interest out of you, or for the stand-alone challenge levels to hold any appeal. In the dark is where this clumsy vampire game should remain.

Zynga sheds daily users as it announces $15.8m loss

Farmville maker Zynga has announced a $15.8m loss for the second quarter of 2013, as daily users of its social games fell by 45 per cent over the last twelve months.

39m people now play Zynga titles on a daily basis, down from 72m this time last year. Alongside the drop in active daily players, the amount of people playing a Zynga game at least once a month also dropped 39 per cent year-on-year to 187m, down from 306m in the second quarter of 2012.

The social gaming giant announced revenues of $231m for the three month period ending June 30, down from $332m the year before.

Zynga released six new titles in the last quarter: Hidden Shadows, War of the Fallen, Draw Something 2, Battlestone, Solstice Arena, and Running With Friends.

Zynga has had rough time of late, and is embarking on a restructuring process that will remove 520 jobs from the company.

"The next few years will be a time of phenomenal growth in our space and Zynga has incredible assets to take advantage of the market opportunity," said former Xbox boss and now Zynga CEO Don Mattrick.

"To do that, we need to get back to basics and take a longer term view on our products and business, develop more efficient processes and tighten up execution all across the company. We have a lot of hard work in front of us and as we reset, we expect to see more volatility in our business than we would like over the next two to four quarters. I'm privileged to lead Zynga and I look forward to spending more time with our players, employees and shareholders."

Zynga previously announced a profit of $4.1m for the first quarter of the year.

World of Warcraft subscribers drop to 7.7 million

World of Warcraft has lost 700,000 players in the last three months, with the MMO now down to 7.7 million active subscribers.

Activision Blizzard reported that 8.2 million people were subscribed to World of Warcraft in March, with CEO Bobby Kotick saying that the company expects to see the number fall further throughout the year.

The decline in World of Warcraft players numbers has been previously attributed mainly to Eastern markets, although Activision did not comment specifically on this latest subscriber decline.

Activision adds that World of Warcraft remains the most popular subscription-based MMO in the world.

Subscribers for the game peaked at over 12 million in October 2010. The gargantuan MMO was originally released in 2004, and has subsequently released four expansion packs: Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm, and Mists of Pandaria.

A World of Warcraft movie will begin filming in 2014.

World of Warcraft's latest player numbers arrive as Activision Blizzard announces it has spent $5.83 billion on company shares to secure its independence from parent company Vivendi.

Frank Gibeau on next-gen transitions and mobile gaming

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 24 Juli 2013 | 23.26

EA Games Label president Frank Gibeau has said that the Frostbite engine created by Battlefield 4 developer DICE had been the company's core difference in the transition to Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Speaking in an interview with GamesBeat, Gibeau said "when you have a proven technology base with tools that work and you're able to move teams around, because they're all trained on the same engine, it makes for efficient and low-risk development. That was a critical decision, to invest in [the Frostbite engine] early on and put the resources in. It causes stress in other parts of the business because a lot of our top guys were working on next-generation behind the scenes. But that was a big breakthrough for us, for sure."

Gibeau added that EA is also experiencing an "unfair advantage" in the mobile market thanks to its big-name brands. "In the case of The Simpsons and The Sims, we're seeing some of the highest results we've ever seen in the revenue on those projects, and they've each been in the market well over a year. The fact that we can stitch [titles like FIFA, Madden, The Sims, and Plants Vs. Zombies] together inside a network gives us an unfair advantage in a world of proliferating titles."

He added that a combination of being "platform agnostic" and getting independent developers on board is the way to go for the mobile gaming business to thrive. "On mobile devices, that's never been more true than now. We're seeing console game levels of return, financially, on these projects. We're seeing audiences that are vastly bigger. Our creative teams are intrigued by designing games for mobile devices. The touch screen, the technology--the technology on the next wave of tablets is going to be near-console-level in terms of graphics performance. You have to design for a touch screen. You have to design for short sessions. You have to design with the mindset that it's going to be mobile."

"[In terms of indie developers, they] are driving a lot of the innovation in the mobile channel. And I don't think you can overstate how big that is. Mobile and tablets have lowered the barrier to entry for a lot of the most creative people in the industry. As a result, it's a really great time to be an indie. You'd have to go back to the early days of gaming to find a time when there was this much accessibility and creativity pouring into our art."

Namco Bandai teases new worldwide arcade title

Namco Bandai announced that its new studio in Singapore is working on a new game IP.

The publisher told GameSpot Asia that the arcade title will be released worldwide on an unannounced date. So far, 15 people in the Singapore development office are working on it, including former developers from the LucasArts Singapore office.

Makoto Ishii, Namco Bandai division manager for amusement machine group 2, said that there are no current plans to release the mew arcade game on consoles. Ishii also did not clarify whether the new arcade title will be related to past Namco Bandai IPs like the Gundam, Tales, and Tekken series.

In related news, Namco Bandai Singapore president Hajime Nakatani clarified that the Singapore studio will be focused on game development, though the studio may have plans to set up a localization division in the future. Namco Bandai Singapore will also do game development work outsourced by the Japanese headquarters. The company set up the studio because past efforts that involved collaborating with Asian game development partners were successful.

Namco Bandai will reveal the new arcade IP "in the near future," as development for the title started last month. For more information on Namco Bandai's latest title, check out GameSpot's coverage on Gundam Breaker.

SimCity sales hit 2 million

Electronic Arts' city-building game SimCity has now sold 2 million units, EA Labels president Frank Gibeau told GamesBeat in a new interview. This is up 400,000 units from 1.6 million at the end of March.

Recalling the game's rocky launch in March, Gibeau said the first week was "really rough" and an "experience nobody wants to live through again."

Despite the initial struggles, Gibeau said the company sees SimCity as a positive achievement overall.

"Since then, we've sold more than 2 million units, and the number of people logging in and playing is holding steady. SimCity is a success," Gibeau said. "However, underestimating demand in the first month was a major miss. We hope that the game and the service we've provided since then meets the fans' high standards."

In addition, the feedback EA received from gamers following SimCity's launch helped inspire the company to make 2014's The Sims 4 an offline game, Gibeau said.

"In the last few months, we have started making changes to the business practices that gamers clearly don't like," Gibeau said. "In the spring, we dropped our online pass program for consoles--both next-generation and current-generation. We listened to the feedback on SimCity and decided that The Sims 4 would be built as a single-player, offline experience."

Ouya devs open up on sales figures for new console

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Selasa, 23 Juli 2013 | 23.26

Developers for the recently launched Ouya console voiced their opinions on Edge and Gamasutra about how each of their various titles have sold so far.

Developer Matt Thorson, who created TowerFall, said that the game performed well, selling 2,000 units at $15 each. "Sales have been surprisingly high for a new game on a new console. The game has definitely proven itself on Ouya, I think there's enough demand to warrant bringing it to PC," he said.

Developer NimbleBit's title, Nimble Quest, was downloaded 6,508 times and was purchased 122 times, bringing the total profit of the game to $427. Cofounder David Marsh said that he would recommend the Ouya for indie developers who are familiar with Android and are curious about the console. "It's probably not going to be a huge source of income compared to other platforms, but it's dead easy to submit a game and get it into the store. It's the only console right now with a truly open store, which makes it interesting and worth supporting if you want to see more open platforms. It's also a great device to have just to check out all sorts of neat experimental multiplayer games that are already popping up. I think it's a step in the right direction," he said.

Knife Media's cofounder Jack Shiels said that sales for the company's game, twin-stick shooter Red, were adequate at best. "We broke even within two-and-a-half-weeks, whilst sales are currently sitting at just below 400. Right now that doesn't seem like a whole lot, but there aren't a significant amount of Ouyas out in the wild right now. I reckon by year end we will have a clearer picture," he said.

Ryan Wiemeyer, co-founder of the team The Men Who Wear Many Hats, said that the game Organ Trail sold about half of what his low-end predictions were. "Last I checked we were at 501 purchases from 13,112 downloads (a 3.8 percent attach rate). This accounts for about 0.1 percent of our total Organ Trail sales to date (which is over 400,000.) So, I don't even know if it was worth the man hours yet. Then again… Organ Trail was a pain to add controller support to and that was the bulk of the port."

For more information on the Ouya, check out GameSpot's coverage on the console.

Capcom: No new Darkstalkers game planned

Low Darkstalkers Resurrection compilation sales given as reason for halt on franchise.

Capcom says that it has no plans for more Darkstalkers game in the near future.

According to a report on Siliconera, Capcom fighting game manager Matt Dahlgren said that the Darkstalkers Resurrection re-release did not meet sales expectation. "Darkstalkers Resurrection did not perform as well as we would have liked to hope. You never know what the future may hold, but Street Fighter is definitely not dead. There is nothing Darkstalkers on the immediate horizon for sure," he said.

Previously at New York Comic-Con 2012, Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono showed off a teaser for a new Darkstalkers game featuring the characters Demitri and Lord Raptor. Capcom also experienced lay-offs early this month, with senior vice president Christian Svensson leaving the company.

Apple developer center hacked

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 22 Juli 2013 | 23.25

Apple has taken down its developer website following a hacking attempt that potentially exposed names, physical mailing addresses, and email accounts.

In a statement on the site titled "We'll be back soon," Apple explained that this hacking attempt was detected on Thursday.

"Last Thursday, an intruder attempted to secure personal information of our registered developers from our developer website. Sensitive personal information was encrypted and cannot be accessed, however, we have not been able to rule out the possibility that some developers' names, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses may have been accessed," the statement reads.

"In the spirit of transparency, we want to inform you of the issue. We took the site down immediately on Thursday and have been working around the clock since then."

Apple explained that in order to prevent a similar security threat in the future, the company is "completely overhauling" its developer systems, updating server software, and rebuilding its entire database.

"We apologize for the significant inconvenience that our downtime has caused you and we expect to have the developer website up again soon," the statement reads.

Developers with program memberships set to expire during the period will have their accounts extended, Apple said. No indication as to when the portal will reopen has been given.

Konami teases new Castlevania game

Castlevania producer Dave Cox has teased a new entry in the Lords of Shadow series and revealed that whatever this game turns out to be, Mercury Steam will not develop it.

Speaking during a Comic-Con roundtable interview, Cox said Konami has learned a great many lessons as it relates to performance capture for the series and suggested these lessons could be applied to an all-new game.

"We have to really plan differently and do things differently. And we've made mistakes on this one, as well, which we're going to hopefully improve for the next one [Emphasis added]," Cox said. "I think it's a learning process and I think game developers are learning every day how to do things better."

Cox also confirmed in the interview that Spanish developer Mercury Steam is moving away from the Lords of Shadow series because it has nothing left to say in the universe.

"I think if you've got something to say, you should just say it, and when you're done, just shut up," Cox said. "And we've got something to say. And once it's out there…I think it's time for somebody else; somebody younger, a younger producer to come in and take up the mantle and do what they think would be right for Castlevania and for us to move on to something else."

"I think Castlevania is a series that has evolved over the 26 years to what it is today and I think it's in good shape right now and I think people will really enjoy the last one," he added. "There's a lot of surprises and I think we're going to deliver something unexpected."

In June, Cox said Mercury Steam has "next-gen in mind for our next project," but would not say more. Though Cox wouldn't go into more detail about this next game, last year he teased that Mercury Steam has a couple of "really cool ideas" in the works, adding that "it's no secret that I'm a big fan of Contra and I'd like to do something in that universe."

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 launches for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC this winter.

Australian government will consider reclassifying Saints Row IV

Classification Review Board will meet July 29 to consider application for the review of upcoming action game.

The Australian Classification Review Board will meet July 29 to consider an application to review the classification of Deep Silver's open-world action game Saints Row IV.

The game was refused classification on June 19 for anal probe weapons depicting "implied sexual violence," among other things, meaning the game was effectively banned in the country.

"In the Board's opinion, Saints Row IV, includes interactive, visual depictions of implied sexual violence which are not justified by context," a June 25 statement from the board said.

"In addition, the game includes elements of illicit or prescribed drug use related to incentives or rewards. Such depictions are prohibited by the computer games guidelines."

Saints Row IV launches in the United States and Europe next month on August 20 and August 23, respectively. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Xbox update process "unacceptable" for F2P games, says World of Tanks dev

The Xbox 360's update and certification processes are "unacceptable" for free-to-play games, World of Tanks developer Wargaming CEO Victor Kislyi told Polygon in a new interview.

The executive explained that Wargaming is working with Microsoft to streamline its certification and update processes ahead of World of Tanks' launch on Xbox 360 this summer.

"The good thing is with online games, sometimes if you screw up, you can do frequent updates," Kislyi said. "But one of the biggest challenges with Microsoft was the frequency of updates because the QA process and certification process takes an extremely long time. Totally unacceptable for a meaningful free-to-play. We are working with them to do quicker updates."

World of Tanks will be a free-to-play title on Xbox Live, though it won't be entirely free-to-play, as players must have a Gold subscription ($5/month) to play the game. Kislyi said last month that the company must "tolerate" this requirement, which he is "not happy about."

Gearbox reveals first details on new Borderlands 2 DLC

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Sabtu, 20 Juli 2013 | 23.26

Earlier this month Randy Pitchford revealed that Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep would not be the last piece of downloadable content released for Borderlands 2.

Today during its PAX Australia panel, Gearbox Software announced the first details for the game's fifth expansion pack, as well as outlining free feature updates on the way.

The new DLC pack, the Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 2, will add 11 extra levels to the current player cap, and a new Digistruct Peak Challenge. The pack will also allow players to "over level" the game to make content more difficult for advanced players. No specific release date was given, but Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford confirmed that the pack will be out sometime before October 31 this year. The pack will not be included in the current season pass, and will cost $5. No previous DLC will be required to play.

A planned free update to Borderlands 2 is also set to increase the maximum amount of ammo players can carry, enhance the total number of available bank slots, and boost inventory capacity. All upgrades can be purchased using Eridium, the in-game upgrade resource.

The team also revealed upcoming DLC pack, T.K Baha's Bloody Harvest. The content will include throwbacks to The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned DLC released for the original Borderlands. The pack will conclude with a boss battle against pumpkin creature, Jacques O'Lantern.

Pitchford confirmed that while some DLC has been in development since Borderlands 2 went on sale, beyond today's announcement, the team is aiming to release one or two more packs in the future.

Gearbox working on HD remake of Homeworld series

HD and classic versions of the space strategy series coming to Steam; no release date announced.

Gearbox Software has revealed plans to remaster classic space strategy series Homefront, and bring the games to digital platforms.

CEO Randy Pitchford announced that the successful acquisition of the licence from the now defunct THQ was the only bid made for the franchise by a developer during the process, with the other two competing offers made by unnamed game publishers.

The studio will bring both Homeworld and Homeworld 2 to Steam, and while the team is working to update the graphics for a more modern look, those who purchase the game will also receive classic, unaltered versions of the 1999 and 2003 games. No release dates were confirmed. The news came as part of the company's PAX Australia panel, where it also revealed it would be bringing new downloadable content to its hit RPG, first-person shooter hybrid, Borderlands 2.

In April this year a Kickstarter campaign to create Homeworld 3 was unsuccessful after developer TeamPixel was unable to secure the game's rights.

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 19 Juli 2013 | 23.48

Gearbox president says company will announce new downloadable content for shooter at PAX Australia on July 20.

Gearbox Software will announce new Borderlands 2 downloadable content tomorrow at PAX Australia, president Randy Pitchford has said on Twitter.

Pitchford did not give any details regarding what will be included in the forthcoming DLC pack. Earlier this month, he confirmed new DLC for Borderlands 2, saying during a podcast that, "We've got more stuff in the hopper that we're planning and getting pretty excited about."

Previously released Borderlands 2 expansions include Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep, Captain Scarlett and Her Captain's Booty, Mr. Torgue's Campaign of Carnage, and Sir Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt.

These expansions are available as part of the $30 Borderlands 2 Season Pass or individually for $10 each. It is not clear what the new content will cost or when it will release.

Sequels a "big problem" for horror genre, says Mikami

Sequels are a "big problem" for the horror genre, according to Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami. Speaking with Eurogamer, the industry veteran behind upcoming horror game The Evil Within said to keep things fresh, developers have added more action to their horror games, a move that in turn can reduce the scare factor.

"Sequels are a big problem in horror entertainment," Mikami said. "As a horror game series continues you begin to know who the enemies are going to be. Just this knowledge naturally makes the game less scary. So to capture a wider audience designers add more action. That further reduces how frightening the game feels."

This is one of the reasons why Mikami chose to make The Evil Within, an all-new next-generation horror franchise from his studio Tango Gameworks and publisher Bethesda. Another is because graphics have advanced to the level where Mikami and his team can truly frighten gamers, he argued.

"This has the capacity to make the fear much closer to you. We can add in a far greater amount of animation and make it context based, so, for example, we can change how a character moves in a certain situation," Mikami said.

"Really, I'm making this game just because it's fun to scare people," he added. "Instead of trying to introduce new ideas, I want to return to survival horror's roots. We've strayed from that. I want to explore fear again, and that sense of overcoming fear, one that's unique to games."

The Evil Within launches for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 in 2014. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Battlefield 4 campaign details revealed

Battlefield 4 developer DICE has released new campaign details for this October's new military shooter. Gamers will play as Sergeant Daniel Recker, a member of an elite group of "unlikely heroes" known as Tombstone squad.

Missions in Battlefield 4 will take place across the world in destinations like Azerbaijan, Shanghai, and Singapore, DICE said. In one chapter, players will rescue VIPs, among them a CIA field operative known as Laszlo W. Kovic.

Kovic is the focus of an upcoming Battlefield novel that provides the backstory for the CIA operative and the larger Battlefield 4 fiction.

"As you reach Singapore you are shocked to find a horrific scene of fire and mayhem," the game's description reads. "The flagship is sunk and its fleet is eradicated, and from this point on nothing is certain."

Battlefield 4 launches October 29 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions are in the works but do not have release dates yet.

Teen jailed after League of Legends argument hopeful for case dismissal

The Texas teenager jailed after comments made on Facebook following a League of Legends match is hopeful that his case will be dismissed. Speaking with Kotaku, Justin Carter's lawyer Don Flanary said he will file a motion for dismissal on August 12

"I think the law is definitely on our side," Flanary said.

Carter was arrested in March after he said on Facebook following a League of Legends match that he was going to "shoot up" a school and "eat their still, beating hearts," according to his father.

He reportedly followed up these comments with "LOL and "JK." A woman in Canada saw his comments and informed the police, who arrested Carter for making a terrorist threat.

Carter's comments came just months after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut, where 20 children and six adults were killed.

According to Flanary, Carter was charged without full context or understanding of his comments. "It's clearly sarcasm," Flanary said. "They charged him before looking at the entire thread."

An "anonymous good Samaritan" posted Carter's $500,000 bail last week. He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Ouya launches $1 million developer fund

"Free The Games Fund" will match Kickstarter funding provided game is exclusive to platform for at least six months.

Ouya today announced a new $1 million developer fund that will match funding for new games through Kickstarter provided the titles are exclusive to the platform for at least six months.

The new fund will match 100 percent of total funds raised up to $250,000 from Kickstarter campaigns that must conclude by August 10, 2014. All projects must adhere to Ouya's submission guidelines.

A full list of rules is below:

  • Game projects must launch on Kickstarter on or after August 9, 2013, and conclude by August 10, 2014.
  • Games must meet their Kickstarter funding goal and raise a minimum of $50,000 to be eligible for matching.
  • Once successfully funded via Kickstarter, OUYA will match 100% of the total funds raised up to $250,000.
  • Game creators must make their game exclusive on OUYA for a minimum of six months beginning on the date the title becomes available for download on OUYA.
  • And, for the game that raises the most via Kickstarter by the end of the program, the developer will earn an additional $100,000 Rock Star bonus from OUYA.

In addition, Ouya will not provide matching funds all at once. 25 percent will be given when a Kickstarter campaign concludes, 50 percent when the title launches on Ouya, and the final 25 percent after the six-month Ouya-exclusive period is over.

More information about Ouya's new developer fund is available at the Free The Games Fund website.

The $99 Android-powered Ouya launched last month to the public and quickly sold out, though the microconsole is now again readily available.

Xbox One can play games while they're being installed

Microsoft confirms disc-based games will allow for play during install, but did not confirm a similar feature for Xbox Live downloads.

A Microsoft representative has told Polygon that the Xbox One will allow users to play games while they're being installed onto the console.

The company said that gamers can play disc-based games while they're being installed to the system's hard drive, with all disc-based titles requiring an install.

Microsoft has yet to confirm whether this applies to titles downloaded from Xbox Live.

In a recent interview, Microsoft's chief product officer Marc Whitten said that the company has not done enough to communicate the benefits of the Xbox One.

Xbox One is due for release this November for $500.

Phil Spencer, Aaron Greenberg staying with Xbox team following Microsoft reorg

Gaming executives Phil Spencer and Aaron Greenberg are staying with the Xbox team following the departure of Don Mattrick to Zynga and a major reorganization that saw Julie Larson-Green take over all-things Xbox this week.

Both executives confirmed the news on Twitter.

Spencer said, "Still head of Microsoft Studios and happy with the new org and announce of Julie." Meanwhile, Greenberg tweeted, "Wanted to share I am staying w/team & Xbox, will be Chief of Staff for Devices & Studios reporting now to Julie Larson-Green."

Mattrick left his post as president of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business (IEB) last week for a job as CEO of Zynga, where he is up to earn more than $40 million.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer yesterday confirmed the long-rumored company-wide reorganization. The executive described a "One Microsoft" that will enable the company to operate at "greater speed, efficiency, and capability in a fast changing world."

Larson-Green, a 19-year Microsoft veteran, will head up Microsoft's new Devices and Studios Engineering Group, where she will look after every Microsoft hardware endeavor--including Xbox.

The Xbox One launches in November for $500.

Microsoft reveals Xbox One prototypes

Microsoft has taken the wraps off some of the design process and prototype looks for its upcoming Xbox One console.

Xbox creative director Carl Ledbetter discussed the journey to the final look and feel of the console as part of Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference 2013, as reported by Polygon.

"We wanted to make it simple and elegant, and we wanted it to be crafted and tailored, so it's all about quality," Ledbetter said. "Using those principles, we started to design."

The process involved a team of 30 staff creating initial sketches, which were then turned into physical prototypes. Those models were then put in situ, placed in lounge rooms to give the team an indication of how the devices would look alongside other consumer electronics.

"The design you see here," Ledbetter said, showing the final Xbox One unit, "this is where we start to apply things like gloss and matte finishes. How does the vent pattern look? How does the brand come through the front? How do we make the font look high quality, just like the high-definition televisions in people's living rooms?"

The creative director also revealed that Microsoft created more than 200 prototypes for its new Xbox One controller, with users able to discern minute differences between different configurations. "We found that, when people put these in their hands, [they] could tell the difference between a 10th of a millimetre in size," Ledbetter said.

The Xbox One is scheduled to go on sale this November.

The lead architect of the PS4, Mark Cerny, said that the numbers of indie developers developing for PlayStation platforms will grow at a fast rate.

During a Develop Conference interview in Brighton, Cerny said that the PS4 ecosystem was in an ideal position to speed up the trend. "I see it that on PlayStation 4, [indie development] trends are going to accelerate. I think we now finally have the proper business structure to really support indie development. And the PlayStation 4 overall user experience is also set up very well for indie; you can share screenshots and videos of the games and elevate their visibility within the gaming community quite easily," he said.

Besides being the lead architect for the PS4, Cerny was responsible for programming, designing, and producing legacy titles such as Marble Madness, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, and Crash Bandicoot. Sony's next generation console is due to launch before the end of 2013.

Microsoft suggests small businesses buy an Xbox One for the workplace

Alongside gamers and families, Microsoft is now saying the Xbox One would be a perfect device for small businesses.

In a public letter to small business owners, Microsoft director of consumer camp Marques Lyons has said many of the applications and features available to the upcoming next-generation console would be valuable to the networking and conferencing needs of offices.

"In fact, it's entirely justifiable to make the Xbox One a business expense," wrote Lyons. "The Xbox One, priced at $499, is an affordable option for small business owners, as there are many features built into the console that could help it rival even the most modest of video conferencing and networking platforms."

"What is being positioned as an excellent entertainment device can be just as enticing for you and your small business."

"Utilize Skype," continued Lyons, "and the power of group chatting, to have that collaborative exchange with clients and co-workers, no matter where in the world they happen to be."

"Utilize the size of that nice TV screen to see every smile and nod as your next great plan comes together. The Xbox One with Kinect, as a Skype provider, is just as capable as a PC with an attached/included microphone and webcam. The difference here is that Xbox One and Kinect gives you the open space to move, gesture, show examples, and see everyone more clearly."

Lyons also suggested a workplace mix of SkyDrive, Office Web Apps, and Kinect. "The SkyDrive app can let you easily access both photos and videos for viewing. If you're hosting a meeting at your office, don't worry about attaching a PC to the TV or using a projector. Store your videos in SkyDrive and then use the app to open that video. Do you have photos from recent travels or images showing details and diagrams? Open them with SkyDrive, navigate them with Kinect voice or hand gestures, be free from tethering that PC around."

"With SkyDrive via Internet Explorer, you can use it with the Office Web Apps to open that Excel spreadsheet or PowerPoint. Use the Kinect voice and hand gestures to navigate to websites. Now you're free of clickers and light pens to use your hands to for more expressive gestures."

Lyons also said a mix of SmartGlass and Wi-Fi Direct would be useful in the workplace, allowing workers to beam presentations onto a large TV screen and control them with a tablet.

Future applications might also be released to assist businesses, added Lyons. "The app story of Xbox One has yet to be written, therefore it is entirely possible to find apps down the road that could be of benefit for you and your business. With the processing power, snap mode, and connection to a large screen, that the Xbox One has, this device is capable of going from the 'break room' to the 'board room'."

The Xbox One will be released this November for $499/€499/£425.

China to end console ban - Report

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 10 Juli 2013 | 23.26

According to a new report from the South China Morning Post, China may end its 13-year ban on the sale of game consoles, provided the systems are made in Shanghai's new free-trade zone.

According to Chinese government documents, foreign console manufacturers like Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft would also need approval from "culture-related authorities" to promote and sell their products in the country.

China enacted the console ban in 2000, blocking the sale of systems over concerns about potential harm to the physical and mental development of children.

"They still need approval from the culture ministry and other relevant government bodies for their products, which I think is reasonable, because the government wants to make sure the content of your games is not too violent or politically sensitive for young people," one source said.

Some consoles are available in China through black market sources, while touch-enabled devices and smartphones, like the iPhone and iPad, are allowed because they are not deemed gaming devices.

Representatives for Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo were not immediately available to comment.

The state-run China Daily reported at the end of January that the country's Ministry of Culture was holding discussions to consider ending the ban. The new Shanghai free-trade zone is endorsed by Premier Li Keqiang, who is reportedly interested in making the Chinese economy more open and available to the world at large.

Battlefield 4 on Xbox One supports Kinect

Battlefield 4 for Xbox One will support Kinect in some fashion, developer DICE has confirmed in the latest issue of the Game Informer magazine (via Videogamer).

Gamers concerned that they may need to wave their arms to take aim at enemies can breathe a sigh of relief, as DICE said motion control will be used only "where it will make sense."

"We have a pretty pragmatic view [on Kinect 2]," DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson said. "Instead of just trying to tick all the boxes of features you can do with new hardware, we look at what actually adds value [for] our players."

Magnus Troedsson stressed that having precise control in Battlefield 4 is "really important" and that can be achieved only through a traditional input.

"When you look at the kind of games that we build--or Battlefield at least--it is a first-person shooter that is very much about skill. Input is really important," he added. "You need to have very precise control over what's going on, and trying to do something like that with motion control input does not make sense--not if you want to keep the same kind of formula of the game as we [have] now. You'd need to build a different kind of shooter."

Battlefield 4 launches October 29 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions do not yet have release dates.

Petition calls on Microsoft to reinstate Xbox One policies

A new online petition at Change.org calls on Microsoft to reinstate its controversial Xbox One policies that were dramatically reversed last month.

"This was to be the future of entertainment. A new wave of gaming where you could buy games digitally, then trade, share or sell those digital licenses," reads a line from the petition's description. "Essentially, it was Steam for Xbox. But consumers were uninformed, and railed [sic] against it, and it was taken away because Sony took advantage of consumers [sic] uncertainty."

The online petition currently has 1,053 supporters.

The Xbox One's original policies mandated users connect to the Internet once per day and placed limitations on secondhand titles. When Microsoft reversed these policies last month, the company also ditched the Xbox One's family sharing plan--which was to allow users to share their games library with up to 10 family members on any Xbox One.

Sony's PlayStation 4 does not require any online check-ins or place any limitations on used games--information the company dramatically pointed out during its E3 briefing last month.

Microsoft's Xbox One policy reversal was applauded by retailers like GameFly and GameStop--which rely on the secondhand market--as well as Sims creator Will Wright, who said it was "impressive" that Microsoft revisited its stance on the issues.

Microsoft working on four free-to-play games

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Selasa, 09 Juli 2013 | 23.25

Microsoft's Lift London studio is working on four projects, it has announced, all of which are free-to-play titles for tablet, mobile, and other connected platforms.

Speaking today at the Develop games conference in Brighton, Lift London boss and ex-Rare developer Lee Schuneman said the games are "powered by the cloud" and "working across all Microsoft platforms."

Lift London, which employs over 40 people, was unveiled by Microsoft executive Phil Harrison in January 2013, and the studio's focus is squarely on creating new IP for connected devices. Schuneman says that a 21st century audience needs to rethink what the oft-used gaming term 'AAA' actually stands for.

While the term AAA is normally associated with big-budget commercial games designed for core audiences, Schuneman says "AAA is not about team size, or budget, or what device it's on," but is instead "about quality and audience scale."

"Clash of Clans is AAA. Halo is AAA," adds Schuneman, saying that modern game development is "about how you represent your audience and generate content that's culturally relevant."

Dark Souls II to feature more open-world elements than original

Dark Souls II will feature more of an open world than its 2011 predecessor, developer From Software has said.

"Freedom of exploration is something we want to prioritise for Dark Souls II, even more so than Dark Souls 1," said director Yui Tanimura in an interview with Digital Spy.

One goal for Dark Souls II is for the player to have more "freedom to explore," adds Tanimura. "We realise in Dark Souls there were some certain orders, like ringing the bells or going to Anor Londo, which is not necessarily a bad thing."

In Dark Souls II, From Software is hoping for the players to have enough freedom that "things don't have to necessarily be done in a certain order."

"We're hoping that if the player tries hard enough, or are willing enough, they could even start halfway through the game, depending on how willing or how brave they are."

"You won't have to follow a certain line, it will be unique for all players, I think," concluded Tanimura.

Dark Souls II will be released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in March 2014.

Blizzard confirms in-game World of Warcraft store

Blizzard Entertainment has confirmed further microtransactions are coming to World of Warcraft via an all-new in-game store.

Community manager Bashiok said in the game's forums that Blizzard is "still pretty early in the exploration process" and that first tests will take place in Asian regions before spreading to other countries.

The new in-game store's ambition, Bashiok said, is to simplify and expedite the purchasing process that already exists for World of Warcraft.

"For players who are already interested in the in-game items we offer, such as Pet Store pets and mounts, the benefits of an in-game store are pretty clear," he said. "We think everyone would appreciate the convenience of being able to make such purchases without having to leave the game, and ultimately that's our long-term goal for the system, though there's quite a bit of work involved in retrofitting those existing items into the new system."

First tests of the in-game store will take place in Asian regions with new kinds of items, including an experience buff (to assist with leveling) and an alternate way to acquire Lesser Charms of Good Fortune.

"We've had a lot of requests from players in different regions for convenience-oriented items such as these, and as with other new ideas we've introduced as WoW has evolved--including Pet Store pets, mounts, and more--your feedback plays a hugely important part in determining what we add to the game," he said.

"Ultimately it's still too early in the process to make any final determinations about our plans, but in the meantime, we hope you'll check out the in-game store once it's implemented on the PTR and let us know what you think."

Blizzard first revealed it was exploring microtransactions for World of Warcraft last week, after players discovered the Enduring Elixir of Wisdom on the game's Public Test Realm.

World of Warcraft will mark its ninth anniversary this November. The game's subscriber base has fallen to 8.3 million, but it is still the top subscription-based MMO on the market.

During a financial call in May, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said the environment surrounding online games has become increasingly competitive. To addresses this, the executive said the company plans to release new content more frequently to keep gamers playing and to make it easier for lapsed players to return to the game.

World of Warcraft's most recent major expansion was September's Mists of Pandaria. No new add-ons have been announced.

PlayStation 4 controller light won't switch off

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 08 Juli 2013 | 23.25

Players won't be able to switch off the light which emanates from the front of the PlayStation 4's controller, Sony president of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed.

When asked on Twitter if the PS4's light bar could be switched off to save battery, Yoshida responded with a firm "no."

The light bar on the DualShock 4 controller is designed to work with the PlayStation 4 camera to detect motion, similar to the Move controller. The light can also be used for system functions, such as letting players know when the battery is low, and by developers; Killzone: Shadow Fall uses the light bar to give an indication of the players' health.

Along with the light bar, the DualShock 4 features a mono speaker, a 3.5mm headset jack, a micro USB port, and a clickable touch pad on the front of the controller.

The PlayStation 4 will be released later this year for $399.

Aliens: Colonial Marines set to get single-player DLC add-on

Trophy list for single-player Aliens: Colonial Marines DLC, titled Stasis Interrupted, appears online.

Aliens: Colonial Marines looks set to receive a new chunk of campaign DLC, titled Stasis Interrupted.

The new DLC has yet to be officially announced by developer Gearbox or publisher Sega, but the game's Trophies (via PS3 Trophies) have popped up online.

Stasis Interrupted would mark the last chunk of content due to be released as part of the season pass for Aliens: Colonial Marines, and the first single-player DLC for the game.

The 10 Trophies are mostly related to story progression, with additional awards for collecting all of the DLC's audio logs and completing it on the game's hardest difficulty.

GameSpot awarded Aliens: Colonial Marines a rating of 4.5 upon its release in March. News about the game's prolonged and difficult development came out after the game hit store shelves, leading to a lawsuit claiming that Gearbox and Sega misrepresented Colonial Marines in demos and advertisements.

Sega announced in May that Aliens: Colonial Marines had shipped 1.31 million copies.

Activision rejoins ESA

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) announced today that Activision Blizzard and Tencent have joined the industry group. The ESA is responsible for putting on the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo and represents the industry's interests on Capitol Hill.

The ESA's membership now stands at 37 companies, including heavyweights like Microsoft Corporation, Nintendo of America, and Sony Computer Entertainment of America, among others.

Activision left the ESA in May 2008 citing "business reasons."

Today, Activision Blizzard chief legal officer Chris Walther said the company is "excited" to return to the ESA.

"ESA has a long track-record of supporting its members and the video game industry, and we look forward to sharing our unique perspective and experience with them," Walther said in a statement.

Tencent is a significant Chinese Internet company that owns a majority stake in League of Legends developer Riot Games. The outfit also owns 40 percent of Gears of War studio Epic Games and has two employees on the developer's board of directors.

"ESA supports and cultivates collaboration among member companies," said Tencent director of business development and industry relations Gordon Bellamy. "We are excited to join an association that promotes the development of the U.S. game industry as we are exploring more opportunities in this market."

The ESA recently organized E3 2013 in Los Angeles, which drew 48,200 total attendees. Next year's event will be held June 10-12 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The trade association's president, Michael Gallagher, met with United States vice president Joe Biden earlier this year to discuss the role of violent media--including films and games--in mass shootings. The discussions came after the December schoolhouse massacre in Connecticut perpetrated by a reported "deranged gamer" that left 20 children and six adults dead.

ESA lawyers also successfully defended the game industry in a 2011 landmark Supreme Court decision that ruled that a California law preventing retailers from selling violent games to children was unconstitutional. The attorneys, Ken Doroshow and Paul M. Smith, were presented with the GDC Ambassador award for their contributions to the case.

Pachter warns Wii U will finish a 'distant third' behind PS4 and Xbox One

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Minggu, 07 Juli 2013 | 23.26

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has spoken about how he believes Nintendo's Wii U will be unable to compete with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and declared that Nintendo's home console will finish a "distant third in this console race."

"Nintendo's in trouble right now," said Pachter in an interview with ABC News. "Nintendo, I think, waited two years too long to launch a competitive console, you know, a high-definition console with the PS3 and the Xbox 360. I think by the time they did launch a console that stacks up really well, the other two guys passed them by."

Microsoft and Sony will both launch the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 later in 2013, a year after Nintendo launched the Wii U.

Pachter believes the lack of third-party publisher support will also contribute to Nintendo being unable to sell the Wii U to a mass market audience. "The publishers are pretty excited about supporting the Xbox One and the PS4. They really didn't say anything [during E3 2013] about the Wii U."

During E3 2013 Nintendo revealed its suite of first-party Nintendo software for the coming months, including Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD.

Nintendo reported in April that sales of the Wii U stood at 3.45 million worldwide, as Nintendo reported a profit of ¥7.09 billion ($71.3m/£46.7m) for the financial year. Nintendo has also said that its 3DS has become the console of choice in Japan.

"We know EA has no games in development for Wii U," added Pachter. "If others follow suit, I mean if you see Activision pull support, if you see Ubisoft, you see Take 2 pull support, the Wii U is a Nintendo-only gaming device, which is the way they were back with the NES in 1985. They're not going to sell a lot of consoles if they don't have games like FIFA, and Battlefield, and Call of Duty, and Grand Theft Auto."

EA said in May that it had no games in development for the Wii U, but has since tried to retract its statement. Ubisoft continues to support the machine.

"I think [Nintendo] are at the bottom of a huge mountain with a huge uphill climb," said Pachter. "I don't think they're going to get that mojo back. I think these two guys are passing them by. And this PS4, priced $50 more than the Wii U, why would anybody buy a Wii U? Unless they just have to play Nintendo games. I think the way it actually shakes out is anybody who buys a Wii U that really is a hardcore gamer is going to buy an PS4 or an Xbox One in addition, so they can play those third-party titles they love. So I think Nintendo becomes a distant third in this console race."
