Bungie: 'Still a lot of work' to do on Destiny

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 29 April 2013 | 23.25

Bungie's first post-Halo project is not closed to being finished. As part of its latest Mail Sack feature, the developer was asked if the graphics, character models, and the world for Destiny had been finished, to which the company said no to all questions.

"No, no, and no. And, no," Bungie wrote. "Everything you've seen so far is work in progress. There is still a lot of work to be done. This is why you are made to wait, friends. Not because we like to tease you. Not because we know that you can take it. It's because we're still working."

The only gameplay shown for Destiny thus far was a brief clip displayed in February during the PlayStation 4 announcement. PS4 gamers will receive unspecified "exclusive" content for Destiny.

Last month during the Game Developers Conference, Bungie design director Joseph Staten and art director Christopher Barrett showed off a series of concept art images from Destiny and discussed the game's development.

Check out GameSpot's interview with Staten and Barrett for more.

Bungie has teased that more information on Destiny will be shared during the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo in early June. Activision has told investors not to expect Destiny in 2013.

No Tiger Woods game next year - Report

The Tiger Woods PGA Tour series is staying in the clubhouse next year. That's according to Kotaku sources, who told the site that Tiger Woods PGA Tour 15 is not in the works for any platform.

Electronic Arts reportedly planned to outsource Tiger Woods PGA Tour 15 and give the in-house team at EA Tiburon two years to make Tiger Woods PGA Tour 16 for the PlayStation 4 and next Xbox. However, when CEO John Riccitiello resigned last month, this plan was dropped to save costs, the sources said.

The fate of the Tiger Woods PGA Tour franchise is unknown. An EA Sports representative told GameSpot, "We have no comment regarding Tiger Woods PGA Tour 15 and we are focused on delivering a great Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 experience."

EA will report earnings for its fourth quarter fiscal year 2013 next week, where the company is expected to comment on the recent waves of layoffs at the outfit.

If there is no Tiger Woods PGA Tour game next year, it will be the first time since 1999 that EA has not launched a new entry in the series.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 shipped last month for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It includes a number of franchise-firsts, including night golf, LPGA support, and a Legends of the Majors mode that allows players to travel back in virtual time to compete against icons like Bobby Jones and Jack Nicklaus.

New Grand Theft Auto V trailers April 30

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, Rockstar Games confirmed it will release new Grand Theft Auto V trailers tomorrow, April 30, at 11 a.m. EDT.

The original story follows below

Rockstar Games will introduce gamers to Grand Theft Auto V protagonists Michael, Trevor, and Franklin next week through a trio of trailers, the developer suggested today in an update to its website.

No further information was divulged.

GTAV is the first entry in the open-world series to feature multiple playable protagonists for its main storyline. Players can switch between them at "nearly any time." Sometimes the three will work together, with players able to swap back and forth in a similar way to the Lego series of games.

Michael, Trevor, and Franklin each have a distinct personality, skill set, and posse of friends. When players are controlling one of the characters, the other two will leave and do something else on their own.

To date, Rockstar has released two GTAV trailers. The first was released on November 2, 2011 and provided the first look inside the gameworld, believed to be larger than Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and GTA IV combined.

The second trailer launched November 14, 2012 and focused on protagonists Michael, Trevor, and Franklin. It highlighted the stories of the three characters, as well as new areas of the game's fictional setting of Los Santos.

Earlier this week, Rockstar teased GTAV in a religious cult video showing off the fictional Kifflom religion and Epsilon Program viral marketing campaign.

GTAV launches September 17 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Wii U and PC versions are "up for consideration."

Witcher dev: DRM is 'worst thing in the gaming industry'

The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red believes digital rights management (DRM) is the "worst thing in the gaming industry." Speaking to Forbes, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt project lead Konrad Tomaszkiewicz said such measures negatively impact gameplay experiences.

"In my opinion, DRM is the worst thing in the gaming industry. It's limiting our rights to play games owned by us," Tomaszkiewicz said. "Let's imagine that you have a game that requires Internet connection to prove that you actually bought it. What if you lose your connection because of your Internet provider? You can't play anymore."

The Witcher 3 is DRM-free.

Tomaszkiewicz claimed that DRM does not stop piracy and is instead only a "real pain" for legal users. He said fans appreciate CD Projekt Red's long-stated anti-DRM stance and that these users--on forums and elsewhere-- actively attempt to persuade would-be pirates to purchase a legitimate copy instead of downloading a game illegally.

Battlefield and FIFA publisher Electronic Arts previously referred to DRM as a "failed, dead-end strategy."

Also in the interview, Tomaszkiewicz confirmed that The Witcher 3 will not feature a multiplayer component. He explained that CD Projekt Red "strongly feel that this final saga of Geralt has no place for meaningful multiplayer." A multiplayer component was never confirmed for The Witcher 3, but the studio teased last month that it was exploring opportunities.

Another game element that will not be featured in The Witcher 3 are quick time events. Tomaszkiewicz explained that these moments in past games "usually frustrated players" and that they will not appear in the upcoming game.

The Witcher 3 is Geralt's final story and reportedly has 100 hours of gameplay. The role-playing game is due to launch in 2014 for PlayStation 4, PC, and other "high-end" platforms.

Total War: Rome II day-one DLC detailed

When Total War: Rome II launches later this year for PC, free downloadable content will be available on day-one. Publisher Sega announced today that the game's ninth playable faction--Pontus--will be up for grabs at no additional cost come launch.

According to developer Creative Assembly, the Pontus faction hails from the mountainous regions surrounding the Black Sea and is "distinctly eastern in outlook and attitude."

"Resolute in battle and feared for its swift, deadly scythed chariots, Pontus stands poised to sweep South into the Arabian Lands, or West, to threaten Asia and Greece," reads a description of the faction.

More information about the Pontus faction is available at the Total War: Rome II website.

A release date for Total War: Rome II has yet to be finalized, but Sega said this information should come "soon."

Beyond Total War: Rome II, Creative Assembly is working on free-to-play MOBA Total War: Arena, as well as new Warhammer games.

Battlefield 4 retailer image shows October 31 release

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 25 April 2013 | 23.26

A promotional poster spotted on Australian retailer EB Games has marked October 31, 2013 as the release date for upcoming shooter Battlefield 4.

Thursday is traditionally the day games are released in Australia, which could suggest a Tuesday October 29 release date for North America and the UK.

The EB Games poster was snapped by BF4Central, and is the latest retailer leak that states the series' Commander Mode will be returning in Battlefield 4. "Rank up into the seat of the brand new Commander Mode and lead your team to victory," says the poster.

Battlelog 2.0, the next version of Battlefield's social tracking tool, is also mentioned. "Track every shot, every opponent, every detail of your online Battlefield career," it says.

Customers are also told to "Go Premium", with another mention of the previously rumoured Drone Strike DLC.

Earlier promotional material suggested the game will feature three playable factions: the US, China, and Russia.

Battlefield 4 was officially unveiled by EA during GDC 2013. So far EA has only confirmed the game for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Nintendo: Some believe Wii U is 'just Wii with a pad for games'

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has outlined why the Wii U has failed to live up to expectation thus far. In prepared comments published today, the executive said one reason is due to consumers simply not understanding the system's unique features.

"Some have the misunderstanding that Wii U is just Wii with a pad for games, and others even consider Wii U GamePad as a peripheral device connectable to Wii," Iwata said. "We feel deeply responsible for not having tried hard enough to have consumers understand the product."

Iwata is not the first Nintendo higher-up to acknowledge marketing the Wii U has been difficult compared to the original Wii. Mario and Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto said last month that because the Wii U does not have a "looking-fun" element to it, relative to the original Wii, sales have been slow.

Iwata echoed this sentiment today, calling Nintendo's ability to communicate the value of the Wii U a "grand challenge."

"Wii U might still have no such captivating game title as Wii Sports for Wii, with which people immediately comprehended its product value, but it surely has a lot of factors appreciated by users," Iwata said. "We would like to take time to work thoroughly for its penetration, by making various efforts to have many people understand its product value as well as enriching the software lineup."

Another reason the Wii U has come up short thus far, according to Iwata, is due to the extended length between major first-party titles.

"Regarding Wii U, the release intervals of first-party key titles have been so much longer than we expected at the Corporate Management Policy Briefing in January that we have not successfully maintained the momentum of the platform," Iwata said.

Beginning with Pikmin 3 in August, Iwata explained that the Wii U new release slate will ramp up quickly. When gamers who do not own a Wii U see a compelling title for the system, they will be spurred to buy the console, Iwata said.

"Starting with Pikmin 3 scheduled for release in the upcoming July [in Japan], however, we will intensively launch our key titles to give sales momentum to the platform," he said. "As a decisive factor in buying a console is that you cannot play a much-anticipated title without the hardware, we will do our best to have you feel from this summer to the end of this year that there are plenty of great games for Wii U."

Iwata said release dates for Nintendo's upcoming suite of Wii U games will be announced at the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo in early June. Nintendo will not hold a major media briefing at the show this summer and is instead planning to host smaller events to showcase new titles and updates.

Nintendo has previously called out new Mario Kart, Super Mario Bros., and Wii Fit games for Wii U, as well as Pikmin 3 and its two Legend of Zelda titles, as those that will help the platform return to profitability.

Nintendo is also developing a Super Smash Bros. game for Wii U, though no official update on this game has been provided since it was announced that Namco Bandai would be co-developing the game with Nintendo.

The Wii U has sold 3.45 million units worldwide as of March 31, more than 500,000 units short of Nintendo's sales forecast of 4 million units. By this time next year, Nintendo plans to have sold 9 million systems.

Rayman Legends release date moved up

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, an Ubisoft representative confirmed with GameSpot that Rayman Legends will launch in North America on September 3.

The original story follows below.

Rayman Legends will launch August 30 in Europe, ahead of its previously announced September release window, publisher Ubisoft has confirmed.

No new release date for North America was provided, but games typically launch three days before in the US, meaning Rayman Legends will likely arrive in the region on August 27.

The game was once a Wii U exclusive, but Ubisoft announced in February that the game would also be released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

"We heard from many Xbox and PlayStation owners and Rayman fans who told us they really wanted to play Rayman Legends on their current system," Ubisoft said at the time.

Wii U owners can download the Rayman Legends Challenge App today from the eShop. The demo includes several levels, including the Land of the Livid Dead, Neverending Pit, Infinite Tower, and Murfy's Dungeon. The app also includes

Publisher Shanda Games has revealed that a Dragon Nest sequel is in the works.

Nintendo turns a profit but misses sales forecast by half

Sales of the Wii U stand at only 3.45 million worldwide, but Nintendo has reported a profit of ¥7.09 billion ($71.3m/£46.7m) for the financial year.

While the net income is almost half the company's previously estimated profit of ¥14 billion, the company has managed to turn around the whopping loss of ¥43 billion it reported last year--the first annual loss the company has ever posted.

3.45 million Wii Us have been sold globally as of March 31 2013, with fewer than 400,000 being sold in the last three months. The Wii U was outsold by the Wii, which sold 3.98 million units across the company's financial year.

Nintendo blamed poor sales of its devices in North America and Europe, though noted that the 3DS has now become the console of choice in Japan.

Wii U worldwide software sales stand at 13.42 million units as of March 31. Nintendo Land makes up 2.6 million of that figure, while New Super Mario Bros. U has also shifted 2.15 million copies.

Meanwhile, the 3DS has sold 31.09 million units and 95.03 million games. Super Mario 3D Land remains the 3DS sales king with 8.29 million copies sold worldwide, and recent release Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon has managed to gain 1.22 million buyers since launch.

Nintendo's net sales were also slightly down on last year, but damage to the company's bottom line was mitigated slightly thanks to financial gains made by the currency exchange.

For the next financial year the publisher predicts it will sell 9 million Wii U consoles worldwide. 3DS expectations are higher at 18 million.

Previous reports had suggested Nintendo would announce a loss of ¥18.7 billion for the financial year.

Satoru Iwata named Nintendo of America CEO

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has expanded his duties to head up Nintendo of America.

Iwata will take over the Nintendo of America CEO role from outgoing Tatsumi Kimishima, who is being promoted to general manager of parent company Nintendo Co. Ltd pending shareholder approval.

Nintendo of America president and COO, Reggie Fils-Aime, will report to Iwata.

Nintendo hopes the move will allow the company to more easily share a global business strategy for the Wii U and 3DS. Speaking in a statement, the publisher said it hopes to increase its "organisational agility in the current competitive environment."

Sales of the 3DS and in North America and Europe have failed to match the success seen in Japan, and Nintendo is also gearing up to a vital E3 showing where it will attempt to entice customers worldwide to adopt its Wii U hardware.

Kimishima's new role is expected to begin from this summer, where he will relocate from Redmond to Nintendo's headquarters in Japan. He was promoted to CEO of Nintendo of America in 2006.

Nintendo today announced it has returned to profit despite weak sales of the Wii U.

2K will show redesigned XCOM shooter in 'a matter of days'

2K has confirmed the XCOM shooter it announced three years ago has "undergone an evolution" and will be re-revealed in the next few days.

BioShock 2 developer 2K Marin is handling the squad-based tactical shooter. "Announced back in 2010, the game has undergone an evolution since we last showed it to you at E3 2011," wrote 2K on its blog.

2K points to last year's critically celebrated revival of the classic turn-based XCOM. "Firaxis' critically acclaimed turn-based strategy title, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, has reignited the classic franchise and we feel that the time is right to deliver a new experience within the world of XCOM," says 2K.

Development at 2K Marin has been "explored" and "refined", with 2K saying the "creative development of this game has been a collaborative process of discovery and iteration."

"We can't wait to share more details with you about the game in only a matter of days," concluded 2K.

Rumours from last year suggested XCOM is now a third-person shooter rebranded as The Bureau. 2K has also asked customers, via a marketing survey, whether they'd rather pay full price or opt for a cheaper downloadable title.

Bungie: We're not resting on our laurels with Destiny

The Halo series Bungie created is one of the most well-known franchises in gaming. It has sold millions of copies and its fans reach the world over. Despite this success, Bungie does not believe it will be blinded by its past accomplishments for its all-new Destiny franchise.

"It's important to take pride in one's work, and we do, but I don't see anyone here resting on their laurels," Bungie explained as part of its latest Mail Sack. "The ancients are hell-bent on outdoing themselves. The newbies are possessed with a hunger to prove that they truly deserve to keep the company into which they've been invited."

"The bar gets raised every time Bungie ships a game," the comment goes on. "It's been said that the fall could kill you. You'll be the judges of our vault."

Bungie also gave some specifics about what kinds of features and services players can expect from Bungie.net for Destiny. The developer said its core Halo-era ambitions for the service have not changed, meaning players will be able to track statistics, communicate with other games, and even speak with developers at Bungie through the platform.

"Bungie.net was designed to provide the players of Halo with a bunch of ways to extend and share their experiences. Those priorities won't change with Destiny," Bungie said. "It'll be a great place to maintain a relationship with the people who are making this game, with the other people who are playing this game, and even with yourself as a character in this game."

The developer also teased some "interesting plans" for "how you can take that experience with you, wherever you go."

"If armed with the right gadgets, no matter where life finds you, the world of Destiny will be very close--at your fingertips, even," the developer said.

Bungie already has a dedicated Bungie Mobile application, currently available for Android and iOS devices as a free download.

Destiny is the first project in Bungie's ten-year publishing partnership with Call of Duty publisher Activision. The project is described as a "shared-world shooter."

The game is currently in development for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4, though Bungie's own preorder page suggests the game is also coming to Wii U, PC, PlayStation Vita, and the Xbox 720.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim modded with Oculus Rift support

Bethesda's open-world RPG latest game to see support for VR headset.

YouTube user "Chris Gallizzi" has posted a video (via Kotaku) showing The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim running with the Oculus Rift VR headset.

Two minutes of footage are shown, including sword combat and horseback traversal. "Playing Skyrim with the Oculus is a dream come true," said Gallizzi in the comments, before adding that the game's field of view with the VR headset "takes some adjusting depending on your sight… I'm [nearsighted] so I had to adjust [the] FOV from 100 to 110 to make everything seem correct."

Playing Skyrim on Oculus Rift is currently made possible by using the free and open-source Vireio Perception driver, which has also been used to make Left 4 Dead, Mirror's Edge, and Half-Life 2 work with the VR headset.

Last week Bethesda said the Skyrim development team had moved on to their next project.

Metroid Prime trilogy director: 'Everything we do sucks'

The Metroid Prime trilogy was praised by critics, but from the vantage point of director Mark Pacini, the games "sucked."

Speaking to Game Informer, the industry veteran--who left Retro Studios in 2008 after eight years with the company to open Armature Studios--offered a raw critique of Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.

"I think everything we do sucks," Pacini said. "But that's just me because I thought all the Prime games suck. At the end of the day all I see are all the bad things. Prime 2 was a blur to me. It was so quick, it was so fast. That thing just went out the door and it was a very divisive game. People either liked it or thought it sucked, and I can completely agree because I couldn't tell you what that game was because it happened so quickly. Prime 1 was the best designed game. Prime 3 I feel is the most fun one to play. Prime 2 is divisive. You either like it or you don't. That's kind of the way I look at it."

Now with Armature Studios, Pacini and his team are working with Warner Bros. on Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, a Super Metroid-style game for 3DS and PlayStation Vita. He said his mindset is the same with this game; though he wants fans to enjoy it, all he can see now is the "crap" that's wrong with it.

"It is the same thing here with the Arkham game. All I see at this point, because we are knee deep, we're in the woods right now in development, and all I see is all the crap that's wrong with it," Pacini said. "In my gut I feel like, yeah, it's going to be cool. I'm excited for it. But at the same time, I hope we don't disappoint people and I hope that they like it. We're trying our hardest. I would like to play a game like this, so hopefully everyone else will, too."

Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate will launch October 25 alongside the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC game developed by WB Games Montreal.

NPD: BioShock Infinite March US sales hit 878,000

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 19 April 2013 | 23.25

BioShock Infinite--the top-selling title of March in the United States--sold 878,000 units during the month, according to NPD data from Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz.

In a note to investors, the industry watcher said this figure is "a few hundred thousand" units above what the company had expected it to sell.

Creutz said BioShock Infinite has continued to sell at a healthy clip in April--thanks to strong reviews--and is likely to sell 4.5 million units (including retail and PC copies) in its first year.

The analyst also noted that Activision's The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct saw "surprisingly strong" sales in March, where it was the ninth best-selling title overall. Specific sales figures were divulged.

Total software sales in the US for March were up 2 percent, representing the first month of positive growth since November 2011. Creutz noted that Gears of War: Judgment and God of War: Ascension sold a few hundred thousand more units than modeled (though they both still underperformed compared to previous franchise installments), but that non-AAA titles helped boost overall software sales in the month.

Creutz said fourteen March new releases sold over 100,000 units during the month, a feat that had not been equaled since November 2011 or beat since October 2009.

Gears of War: Judgment Call to Arms DLC out next week

Gears of War: Judgment will add the Call to Arms expansion next week, Microsoft and Epic Games announced today. The game's second expansion, which adds three new multiplayer maps and a new game mode, will be available April 23 for VIP Season Pass holders and April 30 worldwide.

The content will be available as a free download for those who hold a VIP Season Pass and will sell for 1,000 Microsoft Points ($12.50) as an individual download. Season Pass holders also receive permanent multiplayer double XP.

New maps included with the Call to Arms DLC for Gears of War: Judgment are Terminal, Blood Drive, and Boneyard. According to Microsoft, they are set against the backdrop of the Locust invasion of Halvo Bay and include a mix of close quarters and vertical combat.

The Call to Arms DLC also introduces a new game mode called Master At Arms, a free-for-all gametype that challenges players with getting kills with each of the 20 different weapons without using melee techniques or grenades. Every kill will automatically advance players to the next available weapon until they have used each and become the "master at arms."

The Call to Arms DLC also packs in 10 new achievements worth a total of 250 Gamerscore.

The content follows last month's Maxim-sponsored expansion, which saw a new map (Haven) and game mode (Execution) added to Gears of War: Judgment for free thanks to its partnership with the men's magazine.

Peter Molyneux's Curiosity now has in-app purchases for adding cubelets

An update for 22 Cans' block-tapping Curiosity - What's Inside The Cube has added a string of in-app purchases to allow users to add and remove chunks of cubelets.

Curious Curiosity owners can now pay to add or remove blocks of 10,000, 100,000, and 500,000 cubelets. The effect is not instantaneous, however, and will instead take place when the game heads to its next layer.

10,000 cubes will cost $0.99/£0.69, 100,000 goes for $6.99/£4.99, and 500,000 cubelets will go for £7.49/$10.99.

"We don't know quite what will happen in this war of attrition," said 22Cans in the description for the update.

At time of writing, 13.7 million cubelets will be removed automatically from the next layer of Curiosity, while almost 4.7 million will be added.

"Curiosity may very well rapidly degrade to reveal its innermost secret or maybe the effects of automatically removing cubelets will be neutralised by players keen to keep Curiosity going," said 22 Cans.

Curiosity has been running since November 2012, and since its launch 260 layers of cubelets have been chipped off.

Heavy Rain grossed $100 million - Report

Quantic Dream's 2010 narrative-focused Heavy Rain grossed $100 million, proving that developers should "stop thinking that innovation rhymes with unprofitable," according to studio co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumiere.

Speaking today during the Digital Dragons game festival in Krakow, Poland, Fondaumiere said, as reported by Games Industry International, that most publisher's would strive for the sales numbers Heavy Rain was able to achieve.

"These projects have been and are profitable, to some extent," he said. "I'll give you one example that I know about: Heavy Rain. Let's say it's $22 million to produce. With marketing it's maybe $30 million. With distribution, $40 million. Sony earned $100 million with the game, so it's very profitable. It's the sort of margin that most publishers would strive for, for any game."

The latest official Heavy Rain sales update came in September 2011, when Quantic Dream revealed the game had sold over 2 million copies.

Also at this time, Fondaumiere called the used game market one of the biggest problems in the industry, noting that the second-hand market cost Quantic Dream millions on Heavy Rain.

Papo & Yo Review

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 18 April 2013 | 23.25

A child's imagination is a powerful thing. It can imbue the world with wonders, taking the mundane and making it magical. It can also help a child cope with real-world fears that are much too big and scary to confront otherwise. For Quico, the young hero of Papo & Yo, his imagination serves both purposes. The game is wise and knowing about the ways in which a child's imagination can empower, and the ways in which it can obstruct, when push comes to shove and reality needs to be faced. As a puzzle-filled adventure, Papo & Yo is too easy to offer the stimulation and satisfaction that come from working out the solution to a perplexing conundrum. But as a journey into the world a child creates as an escape from the pain of reality, Papo & Yo is a beautiful experience that addresses serious issues with a deft, graceful touch. This PC version looks a little better and plays a little more smoothly, but it doesn't improve significantly on the already lovely PlayStation Network release of last year. Still, if you couldn't experience this meaningful game on the PlayStation 3, you should seize the opportunity to do so now.

Tranquil moments with Monster foster a sense of connection that makes Quico's struggle to save him that much more poignant.

As Quico, you follow your sometimes helpful, sometimes playfully cruel sister through a Latin American village that's made up of realistic pieces; the structures look as if they might be ordinary homes that ordinary families live in. But this is no ordinary place. From chalk outlines drawn by your sister on walls, doors spring into existence. By turning gears, you can make stairs slide out of walls. By pulling levers, you can peel back layers of the world. The gears, levers, keys, and other objects you can interact with give Quico some measure of power and control in this place--an important thing for a boy who, as an opening scene suggests, has little power and control in his unstable home life.

Quico's abilities are also empowering to you as a player. In an early puzzle, you come upon a vast divide separating you from where you need to go, and somehow, you must use the small boxes in front of you to bridge the gap. The instant you lift one is a magical moment, as it immediately becomes apparent what the boxes do. By moving the boxes, you are also moving large buildings around, restructuring the world to fit your needs and creating platforms that you can leap across to reach your destination.

This sensation of wonder is repeated again and again throughout the game in ways large and small. It is almost never challenging to figure out what you need to do to advance. Turning the available keys, pulling the available levers, and trying out anything else in the area that you can interact with generally makes the solution to your current predicament clear. But there's a tranquil pleasure in going through the motions and observing the magic that takes place, in seeing a stack of buildings grow taller and taller until you can twist it like a snake and run up it like a giant staircase.

Quico is not alone on this journey. He has his toy robot and trusty friend Lula, who can zip to faraway switches, help Quico jump farther, and offer words of encouragement. And then there's the monster named Monster, who is not just a companion in this story; he is at its thematic and emotional core. He's an imposing presence with his hefty frame and his sharp horn, but he's usually a docile creature, prone to dozing and easily led about with tantalizing lemons. Quico sometimes needs to bounce off of Monster's big belly to reach high places, or get him to stand on a specific spot to trigger a switch. Through these situations, the game creates a meaningful relationship between Quico and Monster, which is necessary for this story to have any power.

You see, Monster has a dark side. Frogs hop around in certain areas, and Monster can't resist eating the little critters. But whenever he does, he becomes a frightening, fiery creature who chases Quico and flings the poor boy through the air. There's no penalty for being caught by Monster--Quico can't die--but it's still painful to see him being savaged by the normally friendly beast. Only by finding rotten fruits can you purge Monster of the madness that overtakes him. Like all the other puzzles in Papo & Yo, those involving Monster's frog-induced rages aren't particularly challenging, but they have real emotional impact.

Quico's quest eventually requires him to seek a cure for Monster, and to say too much about how that progresses would risk spoiling the story. But suffice it to say that Papo & Yo doesn't disrespect its audience or trivialize its subject matter by offering easy, falsely comforting answers. Like all good fables and fairy tales, this story about a boy using his imagination as an instrument of perseverance in a painful world confronts painful truths in order to offer a realistic foundation for hope. It's that rare game that's good for children, not just as a distraction or a piece of entertainment, but as a nourishing tale that helps to make sense of a world that sometimes makes none at all. But you don't have to be a child to be enchanted by Papo & Yo. Even adults need to see the world through a child's eyes once in a while.

Volition: Saints Row's 'juvenile' tone doesn't hurt sales

The "juvenile" tone of the Saints Row series does not hurt sales, but in fact is a component of the franchise's success. That's according to Volition producer Jim Boon, who told OXM that fans have spoken and they enjoy the series' irreverent nature.

"Ultimately, I don't think that Saints Row's tone gets in the way of bigger sales. If anything, I think our tone is an element of our success," Boon said. "Saints Row is quite unlike anything else out there, and I think gamers crave unique experiences--I know I do. We have a lot of passionate fans that love Saints Row, so I think we are striking the right chord."

Boon explained that past and present management have been pleased with the series tone, including that of this year's Saints Row IV, which features features a dub-step gun, aliens, and superpowers, among other new features. Boon said former THQ president Jason Rubin had no qualms with this approach and new owner Deep Silver never asked Volition to make any changes.

Boon explained that the Saints Row franchise is much like film series The Hangover, where people enjoy the humor, but would perhaps not be inclined to discuss the subject material with their parents.

"Based on the overall reception and sales of Saints Row: The Third, I strongly suspect many people enjoy this aspect of Saints Row, even if some may not want to admit feeling that way," Boon said. "Thinking of a movie series like The Hangover--people love the humor but you might not want to discuss some of the finer moments of those movies with your mom, for example."

"I think the same might be true for Saints Row," he added. "We do get an awful lot of feedback from fans telling us much they love our juvenile tone--with some asking us to go even further! Ultimately Saints Row IV doesn't try to take itself too seriously and we even have a lot of fun at our own expense."

Saints Row IV launches August 20 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. A Wii U version is not happening.

Square Enix apologises for 'overdue' news on Final Fantasy Versus XIII

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 17 April 2013 | 23.25

Square Enix has apologised for a lack of information on the frequently delayed Final Fantasy Versus XIII, but has promised that the company will finally be able to reveal details about the game soon.

Speaking on Square Enix Radio (via Gematsu), director Tetsuya Nomura said that "even within the company it's a very delicate problem," after being asked when more information on Final Fantasy Versus XIII would be released.

"The date when we can concretely lift the ban has been decided and we are preparing for that moment," continued Nomura. "Maybe the details as to why information couldn't be released might be touched upon at the next information announcement."

"I'm sorry it's already overdue, but please wait just a little more."

Final Fantasy Versus XIII was announced in 2006, along with Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII. The trio of games were all set in Square Enix's then-new Fabula Nova Crystallis universe.

A report surfaced in July 2012 claiming the game had been cancelled, but Square Enix said development of Final Fantasy Versus XIII had not been abandoned.

Meanwhile, the second direct sequel to Final Fantasy XIII--Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII--will be released in Q3 2013.

Square Enix has also promised to reveal a new Final Fantasy game at E3 2013.

FIFA 14 announced for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC

EA has revealed the first details for FIFA 14, which the company has officially confirmed for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

No next-gen support was confirmed, but EA says it will reveal FIFA 14 for additional platforms "in the months ahead."

The main changes to this year's take on the annual football franchise includes a new ball physics engine and a feature called Pure Shot. Pure Shot is designed to allow players to adjust their stride and approach angles, with the game now incorporating off-balance and rushed shots.

EA also says it has added the ability to maintain momentum while turning in any direction while sprinting, that there is more variety on touches when sprinting, and says that the intelligence of the AI has been improved.

A new feature, which EA calls Protect The Ball, is also designed to give attacking players more ways to block defenders while dribbling.

The game's career mode will also receive an update, allowing players to manage a global network of talent scouts and featuring a redesigned hub.

Elsewhere, FIFA Ultimate Team will be updated, a new online mode will be implemented, and social tracker Football Club will make a return.

No exact FIFA 14 release date was provided by EA, but FIFA games traditionally launch in September.

Last year's title, FIFA 13, received an 8.0 in its GameSpot review.

Valve refunded BioShock Infinite gamer upset over religious scene

This post contains spoilers about the BioShock Infinite campaign.

Early on in BioShock Infinite, the game forces players to accept the Christian religious sacrament of baptism. This did not sit well with Breen Malmberg, a gamer and a Christian, who explained to Kotaku that he refused to accept the digital baptism and demanded a refund from Valve.

"As baptism of the Holy spirit is at the center of Christianity--of which I am a devout believer--I am basically being forced to make a choice between committing extreme blasphemy by my actions in choosing to accept this 'choice' or forced to quit playing the game before it even really starts," Malmberg said.

"Of course I cannot hold true to my beliefs and also commit this act, so I am therefor[e] forced to not play the game," he added.

Malmberg then penned a letter to Valve, because he purchased the game for PC through Steam, explaining the situation. Valve reportedly gave Malmberg a full refund, though the company has not confirmed this publicly or with GameSpot.

BioShock Infinite is not the first game to conflict with religious teachings, but this instance was different for Malmberg, because there was no other option; no way to continue the game unless his character accepted baptism.

"The difference here is that you are forced to make a decision that violates those beliefs in order to continue with the game--which is not something I have run into very often," he said.

This is not the first time BioShock Infinite has made headlines for its religious themes. During the game's development, an Irrational Games employee was so disgusted at the ideas the game proposed that he wrote a resignation letter. He would end up staying with the company and in fact, his discussions with creative director Ken Levine would end up being instrumental in the game's writing of antagonist Comstock.

More layoffs at EA

Battlefield, FIFA publisher cuts jobs at India office and Playfish as part of latest stream of layoffs.

Electronic Arts has cut more jobs, with the latest layoffs taking place at EA Hyderabad (India) and social game studio Playfish (London).

MCV India reports that 50 jobs were cut at EA's mobile studio in India. The company acknowledged that layoffs took place, but declined to give any further official details.

As for Playfish, Develop cites sources saying that EA cut an unspecified number of jobs at the outfit. This is not much of a surprise, as earlier this week EA announced that Playfish Facebook games The Sims Social, SimCity Social, and Pet Society will shut down in June. EA purchased Playfish in 2009 for $275 million-plus.

Jobs have also been cut at EA's customer service center in Galway, Ireland.

Last week, EA senior director of corporate communications John Reseburg confirmed staff reduction as a means to "streamline" the company's business operations to ensure it is well positioned for the upcoming console transition.

EA offers bigger payouts in extended $27m football monopoly settlement

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Selasa, 16 April 2013 | 23.25

New terms in the long-running Pecover vs. Electronic Arts lawsuit have extended the time those affected will be allowed to make a claim for monetary reimbursement, as well as offering claimants almost three times the amount.

The original cut-off date for the football-related lawsuit was March 5, but more time is being made available because a lower-than-anticipated number of claims have been made.

Customers who have purchased any Madden, NCAA Football, or Arena Football game between 2005 and 2012 will be eligible for reimbursement in the settlement.

Owners of last-gen football titles will receive $20.37 per game, while current-gen titles will pay out $5.85 a piece. These figures are up from the previously offered $6.79 and $1.95, respectively.

If total claims exceed $27m then the payout figure will be adjusted. Any leftover money from the settlement, which previously would have been donated to gaming charity Child's Play, will now go to the US federal government.

In July 2012, EA agreed a settlement of $27 million for the long-running class-action lawsuit, which alleged the company's licensing agreements "monopolized an alleged market for interactive football software."

The class action lawsuit had been running for four years, and the settlement covered EA's licenses for the NCAA Football and Arena Football series of games.

Licenses pertaining to EA's long-running Madden franchise are not affected.

As part of the proposed settlement, there will be a five-year ban on exclusive licenses between EA and both the NCAA and Arena Football after the current contracts expire in 2014.

"We made a business decision to settle this lawsuit and put the matter behind us. We look forward to continuing our partnerships with the NFL and NCAA," said an EA representative to GameSpot at the time.

EA's last Arena Football title--Arena Football: Road to Glory--was published in 2007, and the last non-EA NCAA title was made by Sega in 2002.

Bethesda: Used games 'absolutely' a concern

Used games are "absolutely" a concern for Elder Scrolls and Fallout developer Bethesda. Speaking with Destructoid, marketing vice president Pete Hines said his company has attempted to lessen the impact of second-hand sales by supporting games with downloadable content that encourages users to hold on to their discs, among other things.

"Absolutely it's a concern," Hines said. "We have tried to mitigate it by creating games that offer replayability, by supporting them with DLC that's worth hanging onto the game for, or offering tools that let them take things further."

Hines conceded that Bethesda does not have all the answers when it comes to the multifaceted issue of the used game market. He said an solution that works for everyone--retailers, publishers, and developers--may be hard to come by.

"There's no doubt that being a videogamer is expensive. Games are not cheap to buy because they're expensive to make, and people are looking for ways to keep it affordable," Hines said. "I'm not sure anyone has figured out a solution that works for everyone, and there simply may not be one until someone figures out how to include developers and publishers in the loop on used games sales instead of keeping it all for themselves."

Most recently, debate and discussion has surrounding the second-hand market has related to the possibility of the PlayStation 4 and still-unannounced Xbox 720 blocking used games. GameStop management said last month that it has a "high degree of confidence" that the PS4 will play used games, while reports have claimed the next Xbox will block second-hand titles.

Climax Studios teases Prince of Persia-esque title

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories developer Climax Studios has uploaded screenshots for an upcoming title that resemble a Prince of Persia-style game.

The now-removed images for the unannounced title--dubbed by Climax as a "character action platformer"--were marked as a tech demo.

The leaping, bounding protagonist is shown sporting a white vest and red sash, and the architecture in the background of one shot resembles the Middle Eastern aesthetic of Ubisoft's Prince of Persia series.

Ubisoft has said the Prince of Persia series is currently "paused," but that the game remains part of the publisher's portfolio.

"Prince of Persia is part of Ubisoft's portfolio," said Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat in January. "As a matter of fact, we sometimes iterate on franchises and sometimes we give them time to breathe and time to grow, or time to rest. Prince of Persia is as important as any other franchise for Ubisoft. As soon as we have something to show, we will."

The last Prince of Persia title--Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands--was released in 2010.

Climax Studios is also working on another project, which also remains unnamed, though the framing of the screenshots suggests a game with horror themes.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale developer working on new IP

Developer forced to "substantially" downsize following its split with Sony in February.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale developer SuperBot Entertainment is working on new IP following its split from Sony.

While no details of the new game were given, the studio confirmed it has "substantially" downsized following a joint statement with Sony in February saying the working relationship between the two companies ended on amiable terms.

"We have substantially shrunk down our operations but are still going strong while we work on a new IP," said SuperBot director of operations David Yang in an interview with Edge.

A previous source had said to Edge that the studio was in the process of being closed.

The Californian developer was formed in 2009, and so far has only worked on last year's PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

"SuperBot Entertainment will continue working on projects that reflect our passion for games and our commitment to creating award winning titles. We are very excited about beginning the next chapter of our future and invite all of our fans and supporters to follow our journey," said Yang in February.

Ubisoft: gamers are ready for always-online

Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat has weighed in on the possibility of an always-online requirement for next-generation platforms. Speaking The Guardian (via Game Informer), Mallat said he believes most gamers are already prepared for such a mandate.

"Well, that's a question you should put to Microsoft and Sony! I would say that a lot of people are already always online through other devices," Mallat said. "I would suspect that the audience is ready."

The executive added that if an always-online console hopes to see mass adoption, it must "provide clear benefits" for such a requirement, like extra content or featured services.

Microsoft's Xbox 720 is rumored to require an Internet connection--and a Kinect unit--to function. If a network signal drops for three minutes, any running applications or games will cease to work, according to a past report.

Earlier this month, Microsoft creative director Adam Orth made headlines after saying, "Sorry, I don't get the drama around having an 'always on' console. Every device now is 'always on'. That's the world we live in." He then used the hashtag "#dealwithit." He is no longer with Microsoft.

Microsoft has not commented at all on plans for a future platform, though multiple reports have indicated the company will announce the next Xbox on May 21.

The PlayStation 4 does not require an Internet connection. No console in history ever has.

Free-to-play Ridge Racer revealed

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 12 April 2013 | 23.25

Namco Bandai today announced Ridge Racer Driftopia, a free-to-play downloadable racing game from Unbounded developer Bugbear Entertainment. The game will launch "later in 2013" for PC and PlayStation 3.

Gamers will be able to purchase additional items through in-game microtransactions, though these were not detailed at any length. No further game details were divulged.

In a statement, Namco Bandai senior vice president Olivier Comte said that in addition to continued support for the "vital" traditional retail sector, the company is committed to embracing new business models, like free-to-play.

"Free-to-play is playing an increasingly important role, so it's very exciting to be bringing one of our most successful franchises to the free-to-play space for everyone to enjoy," he said.

During a European games conference last year, Comte criticized free-to-play games, saying they "can't be high-quality." He did, however, make clear that Namco is willing to consider all funding models for future games.

In addition to Ridge Racer Driftopia, Bugbear is working on an a "full-contact" demolition derby game for PC and yet-to-be-announced platforms.

Xbox 720 launching with Ryse, new Forza - Report

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 11 April 2013 | 23.26

Multiple sources with knowledge of Microsoft's plans have told The Verge that the Xbox 720's launch lineup includes an updated version of Crytek's Kinect game Ryse and a new "super life-like" Forza game.

Ryse was announced during the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo for Xbox 360 as "Codename Kingdoms." The Roman-themed action game was later renamed Ryse, but never made it to market, despite Microsoft confirming it was not canceled.

The Verge's sources suggest Crytek and Microsoft Studios have rewritten the game to leverage the Xbox 720, reportedly set for a launch later this year. These people described Ryse as Microsoft's next "Gears of War / Halo mega launch title."

Ryse is just one of the Xbox 720's launch titles, the source said, adding that a "super life-like" Forza title, a zombie game, and a family game set on an island with Pixar-style graphics are also part of Microsoft's launch plans. The family game is rumored to use Kinect to scan a player's body to create a virtual character within the game world.

These four games are just a "small selection" of the next Xbox's launch titles, the sources said. First-person shooter games from third-parties will reportedly make up a healthy contingent of Xbox 720 launch titles.

Lastly, The Verge's sources suggest Microsoft is planning to update Xbox Live for the Xbox 720. One such revision will be dropping Microsoft Points in favor of real-world currency, the sources said. Microsoft is rumored to announce the Xbox 720 during an event on May 21 before more details are shared at the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo in early June.

God of War, Borderlands composer working on Company of Heroes 2

God of War and Borderlands series composer Cris Velasco has been tapped to provide the original score for Relic Entertainment's Company of Heroes 2, Sega announced today.

Velasco is a prolific game composer, having created music for not only the God of War and Borderlands franchises, but also Mass Effect 3, ZombiU, StarCraft II, Darksiders, and Injustice: Gods Among Us, among others.

For Company of Heroes 2, Velasco recorded with orchestra musicians and choir from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, and Hungary. The game's score is said to capture the "solemn heroism and human tragedy of the Eastern Front during World War II."

Velasco's main theme for Company of Heroes 2 is available on his website.

"I approached this score from the very beginning as more of a 'Symphony for the Eastern Front' rather than a typical game score," Velasco said in a statement. "The music sets out to convey the horror of war and the determination of the Russian soldiers."

Company of Heroes 2 launches for PC on June 25.

Eidos: Thief PC version 'extremely important'

Gamers worried that Eidos Montreal is focusing more intently on the console versions of Thief than PC can breathe a sigh of relief. Producer Stéphane Roy told Strategy Informer that the studio is committing the resources necessary to ensure the PC version is not a simple port.

"No doubt on our side the PC version is extremely important," Roy said. "Just playingThief with a keyboard and mouse it's different so we must make sure we support that well. For making the PC version we think like a PC gamer, for consoles it's a different type of beast. It's one of our goals to make sure that the PC version isn't just a copy of the console version."

Thief is due out in 2014 for PC, PlayStation 4, and "other next-gen platforms." The game will not feature a competitive multiplayer component.

Roy also revealed that Eidos Montreal considered switching the perspective for Thief and making it a third-person game instead of its familiar first-person orientation. He said the studio made a "full" third-person demo for Thief, but this was ultimately scrapped.

"We gave it a try as there are a lot of games that work better and are more fun in third-person, so we wanted to see if it was possible to have Thief in full third-person," Roy said. "So we gave it a try but finally we decided that part of the series' DNA is the first-person perspective, for the immersion and to convince the player that you are a Master Thief about to pickpocket someone."

Latest Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon leak shows 30 minutes of gameplay footage

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Selasa, 09 April 2013 | 23.25

Update: The videos showing Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon footage have now been removed by Ubisoft.

Original Story: Over 30 minutes of 80s-infused Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon footage has leaked online, though Ubisoft is yet to officially confirm the existence of the title.

The videos show Blood Dragon's altered levelling system, which replaces skill trees with a linear path of upgrades as characters progress through the ranks. The leaked footage is set in a facility, but the end of the footage--and occasional shots of the game's map--suggest more open-world gameplay down the line.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is reported to be a standalone title launching on May 1 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Despite the massive tonal and aesthetic shift, many of the mechanics shown in the video will be familiar to players of Far Cry 3, with Blood Dragon using the same takedown chaining, healing, and grenade throwing. The character--reported to be cyber-commando Rex Colt and voiced by 80s action movie star Michael Biehn--can breathe underwater, takes no falling damage, and occasionally flips the bird at fallen enemies.

The footage also shows that Blood Dragon's cutscenes are done with retro-style 2D art, there's a neon pink knife, and laser-breathing dragons are one of the game's enemies.

Elite Beat Agents dev launches 'tower-offense' game for iOS and Android

Inis currently working with social game company Zynga to promote Eden to Green worldwide.

Gamers familiar with rhythm game developer Inis will be happy to know that the company has launched a new title for the iOS and Android platforms.

Surprising many who have played the developer's past efforts like Elite Beat Agents and Gitaroo Man, the developer's new game is a turn-based strategy title called Eden to Green. Billed as a "tower offense" game according to Inis chief creative office Keiichi Yano (via GamesBeat), players are charged with expanding their territory using sentient plants, fruits and vegetables while fending off evil mechanized armies.

Inis is working with Zynga through the company's third-party publishing platform. The social game company is planning to promote the title heavily and will be targeting the midcore audience.

Eden to Green is out now in Canada and will launch in other parts of the world soon this month.

Metallica songs yanked from Rock Band DLC as licensing agreements expire

Rock Band's older DLC content will begin to leave the game's store as licensing agreements expire, developer Harmonix has said.

Metallica's "Ride The Lightning," "And Justice For All," and "Blackened" are the first, and currently only, tracks to be affected. The three songs were released on the Rock Band store back in November 2007.

Speaking about the potential removal of songs from the Rock Band library, Harmonix said on Facebook that "our Music Team has been hard at work extending these licenses to make sure that this has as small an impact on the community as possible, but there may be a very limited number of songs that will no longer be offered for new purchases in the Rock Band store."

At present, customers who have already purchased the content will be unaffected by the removal of the songs and will be able to download them if required.

Harmonix says that future updates on Rock Band DLC relicensing will likely arrive on a quarterly basis. The developer says it is "making it a priority" to give players notice ahead of content expiring.

"We'll do our best to make sure that you have one last chance to buy these legacy catalog tracks," said Harmonix.

The final downloadable track for Harmonix's Rock Band Store, "American Pie" by Don McLean, was released on April 2. In total, the store saw over 4000 tracks released across 275 consecutive weeks.

"We're incredibly proud of the DLC milestones we've set, especially producing the largest music library of any game available, and we wouldn't have been able to release as much outstanding content without the support of our amazing community," wrote Harmonix in February.

Yoichi Wada: 'The huge loss was like a voice from the heavens'

Outgoing Square Enix president Yoichi Wada has commented on the situation surrounding his recent resignation from the Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy publisher. He said the "extraordinary loss" the publisher expects to see was "like a voice from the heavens" directing him to leave.

"I, personally, would have liked to wait and hand over the firm when it is at its best. However, the huge loss was like a voice from the heavens telling me 'It's time to move on,'" he said in company documents published this week. "After given [sic] much thought, I have judged that it would be best to support the company in other ways as I hand over my roles and responsibilities. For this reason, I have decided to step down."

Replacing Wada as Square Enix president will be Yosuke Matsuda, the company's longtime chief financial officer. Wada said he believes Matsuda is the most eligible candidate to turn the company around. Doing so will involve "fundamental and drastic reforms in the organization," Wada said.

"In addition, I highly value his tough-mindedness, his ability to persistent in a logical manner, and make sound decisions," Wada said of Matsuda.

Wada also clarified his new status at Square Enix now that he is no longer president. He explained that he will leave Square Enix Holdings altogether, though he explained that it is his "duty" to "support the firm in my own ways."

"You might be wondering what role I will take in the company after I step down, so I will tell you before you ask me: I will be completely gone from Square Enix Holdings, I will no longer be the President, Director, nor a staff member of Square Enix Holdings," Wada said. "That means I will not have a say in the future management."

"However, I believe it is my duty as an employee to support the firm in my own ways, including exploiting new businesses, and to yield sound results and performances," he added. "Although I will step down from management, I will continue to work hard to give back to a company that granted me so much."

Standalone Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon to be released in May - Report

The heavily rumoured but currently unannounced Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon will be a standalone title released in May, an updated listing on Xbox.com suggests.

At the end of last week a series of Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon screenshots appeared on Xbox.com, but an updated description for the game now says "Playing Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon doesn't require a copy of Far Cry 3."

The game's description also suggests that it will feature a neon-tinged take on the series' open-world traversal, and star ubiquitous 80s action movie star Michael Biehn as protagonist Rex Colt.

"Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon is THE Kick-Ass Cyber Shooter taking place on a bizarre open-world island crawling with evil," reads the description.

"Welcome to an 80's VHS vision of the future. The year is 2007 and you are Sargent Rex Colt, a Mark IV Cyber Commando who's fighting against a cyborg army gone rogue. Your mission: get the girl, kill the baddies, and save the world. Experience every cliché of a VHS era vision of a nuclear future, where cyborgs, blood dragons, mutants, and Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens, Navy Seals) collide."

The listing also states that the game will be released on Wednesday May 1.

Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon first appeared as a listing in the Brazilian classification ratings group at the start of March. Ubisoft also showed a teaser site for the game on April 1.

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Minggu, 07 April 2013 | 23.25

Ultima creator Richard Garriott has traveled to space and to the Titanic wreckage. Now he can add a new achievement to his resume: Kickstarter success. The industry veteran's crowd-funding campaign for Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues closed today at $1,919,275 from 22,322 backers.

"A sincere thank you goes out to all our backers for pledging your support to 'Shroud of the Avatar' and helping us raise almost double our Kickstarter goal," developer Portalarium wrote on its Kickstarter blog. "This game would not be possible without your dedication and feedback--what a fantastic experience it's been to interact with all of you, learning what is most important and desired in our new world."

The game reached its $1 million target ten days into its campaign. Though Kickstarter funding has ended, those interested in pledging can do so through the Shroud of the Avatar website.

Shroud of the Avatar is due out for PC by October 2014, though an alpha version will be available to backers by the end of this year. Since the campaign began last month, Portalarium welcomed Dragonlance and Deathgate writer Tracy Hickman to the development team.

Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues is the first of a five-game series, referred to as episodes 1 through 5. After the initial launch of Forsaken Virtues in October 2014, subsequent episodes will release on a yearly basis.

New Torment RPG most funded game in Kickstarter history

Torment: Tides of Numenera is the most funded game in Kickstarter history. The isometric role-playing game's crowd-funding campaign closed last night, drawing a total of $4,188,927 from 74,405 backers. That mark is 455 percent better than its $900,000 original target.

Torment: Tides of Numenera passed Obsidian Entertainment's Project Eternity, which was the former top earner at $3.99 million. The project is the second-most funded gaming endeavor overall, behind the Android-powered Ouya console, which amassed $8.6 million.

"There is no way this game would have ever been funded without this new method of connection and without the passion of our backers who didn't just donate but worked as a team to spread the word. You guys rock! The passion of the RPG gamer is like none other," inXile founder Brian Fargo wrote on the Kickstarter blog.

"We are both humbled and excited that you have given us this opportunity," he added. "The team we have assembled is pretty unbelievable and I have full faith that together we will create a true classic."

Torment: Tides of Numenera surpassed its original funding target in six hours. Since then, the project has Planescape: Torment designer Chris Avellone to the team, as well as The Kingkiller Chronicle author Pat Rothfuss. The game was also recently delayed into 2015.

Zynga CEO will draw $1 salary in 2013

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 05 April 2013 | 23.26

Zynga founder and CEO Mark Pincus will draw a $1 salary in 2013 and won't be eligible for the company's cash bonus or equity program, according to a new Securities & Exchange Commission filing (via Inside Social Games).

No specific reason for Pincus' pay cut was provided, though it comes after a year when the social game studio saw numerous executive departures, studio closures and layoffs, as well as an overall $209 million loss. In addition, Bloomberg named Pincus one of the "worst CEOs of 2012."

Pincus won't be living on the curb anytime soon, as Forbes estimates his net worth at $1.8 billion.

Apple cofounder Steve Jobs was also paid a $1 annual salary.

Though Pincus will see his salary cut in 2013, other top brass at Zynga will have the opportunity to make more than ever before thanks to a new executive compensation program. Annual base salaries for six other executives are $425,000 and $500,000, with further performance-based bonuses totaling 100 percent of their salaries.

A chart detailing the new compensation program is available here.

As outlined in the SEC document, the purpose of the new executive compensation program is to retain and motivate executives and to align executive pay structure with that of the company's overall performance-based incentives.

"We believe that by focusing on both retention and performance, the compensation packages align with our strategy to build value for our stockholders," Zynga said in a statement.

Assassin's Creed III: The Tyranny Of King Washington - The Betrayal Review

There's that classic problem with trilogies: after the intrigue and excitement of the first instalment, the follow-up must wrestle with moving the plot forward in a meaningful way, while avoiding those grand revelations so often saved up for the third and final entry. It's unfortunate that The Tyranny of King Washington - The Betrayal (Ep. 2) is the very epitome of a plodding second act. It makes no effort to expand on the mysteries raised by its alternate-universe setting, nor does it offer up much in the way of action from its dull assortment of characters. And worst of all, there's little to be seen of the enigmatic and evil George Washington, the very villain who brought The Infamy (Ep. 1) to life.

Connor's new flying ability isn't as as smooth as it should be.

Instead, you're introduced to a few familiar faces from the Assassin's Creed universe, most notably Benjamin Franklin. He's not his old self initially, but he soon reverts to the same slightly odd character who never really sparked much interest in Assassin's Creed III. Indeed, many of the cast members of The Betrayal fail to capitalise on the alternate-reality setting and instead spend most of their time standing around conjuring up plans and sending Connor out on errand missions around misty Boston. There's a hope that it's all for the greater good of Episode Three, but when you're faced with waves of repetitive missions and seriously dull dialogue, it's hard to see the bigger picture.

The missions take the form of fetch quests, mixed up with the odd assassination. There's nothing here you won't have seen before, and because the mission types are repeated so often within the episode, they get very old, very fast. Like in the first episode, Connor is given a new power to spice things up, this time in the form of short-range flight. Rather than having to leap and climb across the rooftops of Boston, he can zip between them in short bursts, or even chain his flights together for some long-distance travel. It's quite a liberating feeling at first and brings to mind Batman's fluid glides around Arkham City, but the power's shortcomings soon become apparent.

Accuracy is not one of the power's strong points. While you can flap around almost endlessly if you don't mind where you're going, trying to direct Connor along the rooftops is massively frustrating. The icons that let you know where you can fly to are often clumped together too closely, making them difficult to pick out when you're in the middle of fast-paced motion. There's an endless battle between you and the camera as you try to highlight the place you want to go to, only to miss it and end up somewhere else, or on the ground. More useful is the ability to home in on targets from afar and land a sneaky kill, though Boston wasn't designed for such actions, so your attack is often blocked by an errant chimney.

The power itself is based on the abilities of a eagle. Like in The Infamy, Connor drinks a hallucinogenic tea and embarks on a strange, otherworldly drug-trip-cum-tutorial that's as clumsy as it is weird. The Eagle power is the only real nod to Connor's Native American heritage that featured so strongly in the first episode, which is something of a disappointment--particularly if you're interested in learning more about Connor--but not unexpected given the city setting. What is unexpected is Boston itself, which remains seemingly unaffected by Washington's dictatorship, and so looks and feels just like it did in ACIII: it's that lack of detail that makes Episode Two feel far less convincing than its predecessor.

That's a shame, because if The Infamy did anything, it sparked curiosity in the evil George Washington storyline. It's not until the very end of The Betrayal that things begin to get interesting again, and having to trudge through the rest of the episode to reach that point is a lot to ask, even if you're already heavily invested in the story. Lots of side missions and collectible memory artefacts help to ease the disappointment, but they're not enough to make The Tyranny of King Washington - The Betrayal the exciting follow-up the first entry hinted at. Here's hoping Episode Three picks up the pace.

Microsoft also recently filed a trademark application for game software called Marlow Briggs, though the company has not made any official announcements.

Kings Quest rights go from Telltale to Activision

Activision has regained the rights to the long-dormant King's Quest series from The Walking Dead creator Telltale Games.

Telltale announced that it had purchased the rights to King's Quest in 2011, but now Telltale's vice president of publishing Steve Allinson confirmed the rights to the game had returned to Activision. "While we deeply love King's Quest here at Telltale," said Allinson in a statement to Digital Trends, "we can confirm that we are no longer working on the franchise."

"There was a time last year that we investigated partnering with third party developers to produce the game as a partnership but decided against outsourcing. We are not privy to what plans Activision has for the franchise, if any."

King's Quest was a notable fantasy-themed adventure game series which ran between 1984 and 1998. The series was developed by Sierra Entertainment, with rights to the series falling to Activision when it merged with Vivendi in 2008.

Also speaking to Digital Trends, Leisure Suite Larry remake developer Replay was also planning on making a new King's Quest game. Replay owner Dan Trowe said that Activision has its own plans for a King's Quest game, however.

"Activision's probably not going to give us the King's Quest rights," Trowe said. "[Telltale] had it, and we were going to license it from them to make the remakes."

"Then I talked to the guys at Activision and they were like, 'No, we're pulling it because we're going to do it ourselves,'" continued Trowe, but he has no other details as to Activision's plans.

Telltale is currently working on a second season of The Walking Dead alongside an adaptation of Bill Willingham's Fables graphic novels.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen - Talking Monsters & Mayhem

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 03 April 2013 | 23.25

@idunnodude Well, if that gameplay is amazing, and therefore has a great amount of interesting and unique challenge and replayvalue(which leads to far more than 20 hours of gameplay), I rather have that, than playing another boring WoW-alike game like Skyrim(which is mostly about shallow action, fetch-questing and no challenge whatsoever) for 100 hours.

I want to play a great skill-based action-rpg, infused with  unique Capcom-Tacticalness - not another off-the-mill poodle-breeder-simulation.

Square Enix Los Angeles hit with layoffs

Undisclosed amount of people let go from Californian studio.

Square Enix has laid off an undisclosed number of staff at its Los Angeles studio in California, the publisher has confirmed.

In a statement issued to Joystiq, a Square Enix representative said "we can confirm that Square Enix's Los Angeles office has eliminated a number of positions as part of the corporate restructuring announced last week."

"This is an unfortunate situation and we are offering assistance and severance packages to any employees affected by this, we want to thank them for their hard work and sincerely wish them well in the future."

Square Enix Los Angeles was involved with the publisher's MMO titles, such as Final Fantasy XIV and Wakfu. The studio had previously suffered another round of layoffs back in December 2012.

Former Square Enix president Yoichi Wada resigned last week after announcing an "extraordinary" loss in the publisher's first quarter financials. The loss was attributed to many of the publisher's games suffering in America and Europe, with the recent high-profile reboot of Tomb Raider failing to hit its sales target, despite selling 3.4 million copies in its opening month.
