Sony Teases Metal Gear Rising 2 -- Report

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Sabtu, 31 Januari 2015 | 23.26

It looks like Metal Gear Rising: Revengence, the character action game spun off from the Metal Gear series, might be getting a sequel.

The news comes from the 2015 Taipei Game Show, where during a sizzle reel of PlayStation 4 games, the number two, stylized like the Metal Gear Rising logo, appeared for only a second. It appeared specifically during a short clip showing off the PS4 exclusive third-person shooter The Order: 1886. As the character was counting down, the Rising tease flashed on the screen when she said two. You can find the exact moment in this Twitch steam at the 2:46:33 mark.

Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima was at the show, but he didn't discuss Metal Gear Rising. However, looking at his Twitter account, Kojima has been meeting Metal Gear Rising and Bayonetta 2 developer Platinum games lately, most recently in December 14, 2014, when he met with Platinum President and CEO Tatsuya Minami.

Is it a confirmation? Far from it. It's a very subtle tease at best, but one that does seem to fit Metal Gear and Kojima's sensibility.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengence was released in 2013, and featured Raiden, the protagonist of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, instead of of Snake, and fast-paced action and an innovative slicing mechanic instead of stealth. GameSpot's review gave it an 8/10.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain launches in 2015 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. A PC version of the open-world game is also in the works, but Konami has not announced a release date for it.

Dead or Alive 5 Last Round Delayed, But Still No Online Multiplayer at Launch

Team Ninja's fighting game Dead or Alive 5 Last Round has been delayed on PC by more than a month, but it's online modes still won't be ready by launch, publisher Koei Tecmo has announced.

The game, which was originally slated to launch via Steam on February 17, has been pushed back to March 30.

"In appreciation for your patience, we'll be offering the Halloween 2013 Set (28 costumes) free of charge to all users who purchase Dead or Alive 5 Last Round on Steam," Koei Tecmo said, explaining that it pushed the game back in order to provide players with "the best experience possible."

However, this doesn't change Tecmo Koei's previous statement from back in December 2014 that the game will not have any of its online modes at launch. As the publisher said then "Online modes for Dead or Alive 5 Last Round will be added in a patch within 3 months of release."

Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja previously announced that Dead or Alive 5: Last Round will launch across Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 in North America on February 17, 2015. The game launches three days later on February 20 in Europe.

Alienware Alpha Review

Numerous Steam machines debuted at CES 2014, but Alienware's solution, the Alpha, stood out from the pack. It wasn't an underpowered or rebranded product, and it also wasn't sitting next to a four figure price tag. Alienware's little box looked to be the most viable looking console-sized and console-priced offering of the lot.

Alienware started shipping the Alpha late last year for $549 (the high-end version with a faster CPU, more RAM, and an SSD costs $849), but it recently cut that price down to $499. The Alpha is still more expensive than consoles, but also fairly cheap as far as gaming PCs go. Obviously it's not as powerful as the quintessential PC gaming tower, but it may give Sony and Microsoft's latest consoles a run for their money.

With a slightly overclocked 860M GPU based on Nvidia's GM107 chip (the same one that's found in Nvidia's 750 Ti desktop GPU), 4GB of RAM, and Intel's Core i3, the Alpha has all the makings of a good, entry level gaming PC. The 5400 RPM hard drive is a slight disappointment, and it's likely the source of the Alpha's occasionally long loading times. Otherwise, the rest of the components make for a surprisingly capable gaming PC given the Alpha's relatively low cost.

System Specs

Hardware Alienware Alpha
CPU Intel Core i3-4130T @2.9GHz
GPU Modified Nvidia GTX 860M
RAM 4GB DDR3L
Storage 500GB 5400 RPM 2.5" Hard drive, 6Gb/s

Performance

While the Alpha simply can't fulfill the desires of every PC gamer who dreams of pushing graphics settings to ultra, that doesn't mean that medium or high settings are out of reach. While you can get away with these settings at 1080p in most cases, you may need to kick the Alpha down to 720p if you want to inch closer to 60 frames per second and take advantage of greater lighting and post processing effects. Although Alpha's GPU supports 4K output, it can't realistically play games at such a demanding resolution. Despite its PC roots, the primary appeal of the Alpha is like that of a console, such as PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. In the interest of competition, let's see how the Alpha fares against Sony and Microsoft's latest consoles.

Tomb Raider, 45-70 FPS: high settings, 1080p, FXAA, TressFX off, tessellation off
The Alpha can't handle advanced hair found in the PlayStation 4 version of Tomb Raider, but it still handles the game quite well with high settings at 1080p, staying well above 30 frames per second.

Titanfall, 45-60 FPS, high settings, 1080p, 2x MSAA, bilinear texture filtering
Though the difference is only noticeable on occasion, the Alpha stands above the xbox One so far as Titanfall is concerned, one of the system's flagship games,

Watch Dogs, 35-50 FPS, medium settings, 1080p, texture quality high, antialiasing off, ambient occlusion off
The Alpha struggled a bit with Watch Dogs on high settings, so we had to dial the effects down a bit to hit a reasonable frame rate at 1080p. Still, next to the PlayStation 4 version, it's hard to notice any major differences.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, 35-45 FPS: High setings, 1080p, ambient occlusion on, tesselation on
Middle-earth Shadow of Mordor could have ran closer to 60 FPS on the Alpha with more conservative settings, but Alienware's little box stayed above 30 FPS when we turned on advanced settings like ambient occlusion and tessellation, remaining totally playable while looking good, too.

Game Alienware Alpha Xbox One PlayStation 4
Tomb Raider 1080p, 45-70 FPS 1080p, 30 FPS 1080p, 30-60 FPS
Titanfall 1080p, 45-60 FPS 792p, 40-60 FPS n/a
Watch Dogs 1080p, 35-50 FPS 792p, 30 FPS 900p, 30 FPS
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor 1080p, 34-45 FPS 900p, 30 FPS 1080p, 30 FPS

These tests make it clear that the Alpha is, on average, as capable as PS4 and Xbox One when it comes to sheer in-game performance. Unlike those systems, the Alpha's RAM and CPU are upgradeable. If you spend a little more money, you can push the Alpha further than we have in our tests, but at that point, $850, it may be worth investing in a traditional PC with a stronger GPU.

Is it a PC or a console?

Although some people refer to the Alpha as a console, it's driven by Microsoft Windows, a PC operating system, and with that the Alpha exhibits the same general capabilities and limitations as any other Windows gaming PC. What is unique about the Alpha, and why some consider it to be a console, is Alienware's custom user interface, which boots up on top of Windows and is 100% controller friendly.

Currently, the Alpha has only integrated Valve's Steam service within its UI, because Steam's Big Picture Mode makes it easy to access its marketplace your own library of games with only a controller. Neither EA's Origin nor Ubisoft's Uplay touts a controller friendly interface, and while they are still accessible through the Alpha's windows 8.1 desktop mode, there's no way to properly and seamlessly access games purchased through those services within Alienware's custom UI. In most cases, Ubisoft and EA games purchased directly through Steam will work without any problems. The only caveat: you may need to make use of the Alpha's virtual mouse mode.

Every Alpha comes with a wireless Xbox 360 controller that, with a simple hotkey combo, can function as a mouse using the left analog stick. It's handy when you need it, such as the initial setup when you power on the Alpha for the first time, but the need for such a feature reminds you that you are indeed using a PC and not a system that's completely controller friendly 100% of the time. The virtual mouse suffices, but it's not an elegant system.

Apart from the backlit Alienware logo, the Alpha is rather unassuming and less ostentatious than most of Alienware's other systems. If you don't like the color of the default backlight, or you want to turn off the lights completely, you only need to hop into the Alpha's settings menu and adjust the color to your liking.

The Alpha has the basics covered when it comes to connectivity. There are two USB 2.0 ports on the front of the box and two USB 3.0 ports on the back, right next to the ethernet, optical audio, and HDMI in and HDMI out ports. The HDMI in port is an unusual feature, but similar to the Xbox One, it lets the Alpha handle video passthrough from another device, such as a gaming console or Blu-ray player. Alienware hasn't invested in this feature as much as Microsoft--you won't find guide apps and the like that sync with your cable provider--, but its a handy feature to have just in case you run out of HDMI ports on your TV.

The Alpha doesn't offer an experience that's as composed or seamless as a console, but Alienware has done a decent job of consolizing the PC, outpacing the competition in some meaningful ways. The UI creates the illusion that using a console, and it's a disappearing act that almost works 100% of the time. Though you can't tap into Origin or Uplay within the Alpha's console mode, you can if you boot into the Window's desktop. Though the Alpha isn't quite a console, it offers so much more as a PC than the Xbone One or PlayStation 4 ever could. Taking the Alpha out of the home theater and putting it on a desk with a mouse and keyboard open a wealth of functionality that cannot be overlooked. Apart from being able to upgrade the GPU and motherboard, you can do anything with the Alpha that you could with an equally powerful, traditional desktop computer.

With this in mind, the Alpha is a great value. It may be more expensive than consoles, but the difference of $100 is a small price to pay for a console-like gaming device that doubles as a Windows PC. If you like the convenience of the console experience, are interested in the hundreds of excellent games available on Steam, and could benefit from a new desktop PC, $500 is a very reasonable asking price. It may not blow consoles out of the water when it comes to performance, but it comes close. Manage your expectations accordingly and you won't be disappointed by the Alienware Alpha.

In-Flight VR Coming to Australian Airline

Australian airline Qantas has announced a partnership with Samsung to bring the technology company's Gear VR headsets to the cabin, beginning with a trial run for first-class fliers starting next month.

As part of the test run, Gear VR headsets will be available to Qantas fliers in the Sydney and Melbourne International Airport first-class lounges, and also in first-class on select A380 flights from Australia to Los Angeles.

Qantas points out that it is the only airline anywhere to offer in-flight VR.

This trial run will span three months, and Qantas will seek fliers' feedback to see if offering VR to customers is something the company wants to take on in a larger, more official capacity.

"This technology gives us a completely new way to connect with our customers," Qantas marketing executive Olivia Wirth said.

Some of the Qantas VR experiences will include virtual tours of the company's new first-class lounges at Los Angeles Airport, as well as a VR simulation of landing. Other in-flight entertainment options will include movies and audio experiences.

Qantas will also use the Gear VR headset to let passengers take virtual trips to one of the airline's other destinations, which they say should inspire travel and promote tourism.

It's already happening. Qantas points out that Australian company Tourism NT has already partnered with the airline to create a 3D VR experience for Kakadu National Park that will be shown to fliers.

The Gear VR headsets will be available on select Qantas flights for first-class passengers beginning in mid-February, with another rollout in March for trips between Australia and Los Angeles.

For long-haul flights such as the trip between Australia and LA, it's not hard to see the appeal of being able to totally block out other passengers and virtually escape for a while. And for Qantas, letting travelers virtually experience other destinations instead of just looking at a tourism brochure seems like it could have some upside for ticket sales.

Samsung's Gear VR headset launched in December, and is available now for $200 through an "Innovator Edition." The device requires a Note 4 to function as the screen.

Game Dev Bets Big With This Super Bowl Ad

As it turns out, Bud Light's Pac-Man commercial won't be the only video game-related ad shown during this weekend's Super Bowl XLIX between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks.

Boutique game developer uCool has announced that it will air a 15-second commercial for its mobile card game Heroes Charge during the big game. You can watch the ad above.

The Heroes Charge commercial will air during the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl.

This year's Super Bowl is expected to draw more than 100 million views. uCool's marketing officer Tony Cerrato said the opportunity to showcase the game on such a wide scale was too big a chance to pass up, even if ad rates are $4.5 million for 30 seconds.

"Players seem to love our game," Cerrato told AdWeek. "We're getting good responses from that, and we figured that by going on to a bigger venue like the Super Bowl, it should be successful."

Following the Super Bow, uCool will broadcast the Heroes Charge spot on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and then across other ABC and NBC channels, among others.

uCool's other properties include PC games such as Tynon, Evony, and Commanders of Evony. Heroes Charge, released in October 2014, is the company's first mobile game.

Long-Awaited Sons of Anarchy Game Finally Available

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 29 Januari 2015 | 23.26

The Sons of Anarchy TV show may have ended, but the franchise continues with the release of the all-new episodic mobile game, Sons of Anarchy: The Prospect, available now.

The first episode is available now on iTunes for $2, and aims to capture the "vivid action and life-and-death decision-making" of the TV show. It's an interactive narrative adventure game that features an original story that "explores new and familiar characters, setting, and intrigue" from the overall Sons of Anarchy universe.

The game is being developed by Silverback Games in collaboration with Sons of Anarchy creator and showrunner Kurt Sutter and his writing team. Sutter has been trying to make a Sons of Anarchy game for a very long time now, and sounded happy that the game has finally come to fruition.

"It's finally f**king here," Sutter said. "It's awesome. Play it. Live it. Be the prospect."

The game features voicework by Sons of Anarchy actor Kim Coates, who played Alex "Tig" Trager in the series. It is unclear if other actors from the show are involved with the project.

There will be ten Sons of Anarchy: The Prospect episodes in all, with subsequent installments to be released later this year. The game is also planned for release across PC, Mac, and Android, with releases for those platforms to follow.

Captured on Camera: Tetris Player Becomes Sixth Person Ever to Achieve Ti Grand Master

Kevin Birrell, a Seattle-based pro-gamer and speedrunner, has become the sixth known person in the world to achieve the highest ranking in the 2005 game Tetris The Grand Master 3 Terror-Instinct.

Captured on a Twitch stream (found below, YouTube mirror above) that aired on Wednesday, Birrell was awarded the rarest rank of them all by playing the classic Tetromino puzzle game under the most intensely difficult requirements, including lightning-fast drop speeds and one section of the game where the blocks turn invisible.

Tetris The Grand Master 3 Terror-Instinct (commonly abbreviated as Ti) features a Master Mode that will give players the coveted MM Rank if they achieve a near-perfect game. While this in itself is renowned for its difficulty, in order to even qualify for the Grand Master "Promotional Exam," players must achieve this four times in about seven attempts.

Failing the promotional exam means that the four MM rank tokens must be earned again, which adds even more pressure on a player who manages to enter a "Promotional Exam."

Birrell (known online as KEvinDDR) has been playing the game for close to a decade, and this was believed to be his sixth ever promotional exam (having failed the first five).

As shown in the video, the unrelenting speed and remarkably difficult conditions put on the player is why a Ti Promotional Exam has a reputation for being one of the hardest challenges to overcome in games. Birrell is the first person outside of Japan to do this, though he said on Reddit that he prefers not to have the "westerner" distinction attached to his achievement.

"I can't believe I did it. Somehow it doesn't feel possible, but finally it's done!" Birrell wrote on Twitter.

He added: "Now to actually get a GM with a fast time! :)"

Steam Workshop Earns Players $57 Million

Steam Workshop allows users to create in-game apparel such as its infamous hats

Steam Workshop, the online platform that allows gamers to make in-game items for Valve titles such as Team Fortress 2, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike Global Offensive, has generated more than $57 million for its vendors.

More than 1,500 contributors to the serviced make a whole range of digital apparel and in-game items, from virtual hats to skins, maps, and weapons. Valve opened the Workshop in October 2011 and, a little after four years, has announced its latest revenue milestone.

Now the studio is working on expanding the service to Steam games that are made by third-party developers, the first two being Dungeon Defenders: Eternity and Chivalry: Medieval Warfare.

"When we launched the Workshop late in 2011, we expected that it would grow, but not that it would grow this much, this quickly," Valve said in a statement published on its site.

"So far, the total payments made to individuals for the creation of in-game items sold in Team Fortress 2, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive have passed $57 million. This money was earned by over 1,500 contributors spread out across 75 countries.

"Today we're happy to announce that after a ton of work, the first curated Workshops for non-Valve games have opened: Dungeon Defenders: Eternity and Chivalry: Medieval Warfare. This is really exciting news and means that more high quality content will be available for the game you love playing. Plus, purchases of this great new content directly enables those community members to continue practicing their craft and making more awesome content."

Valve added that more curated Workshops would open up to creators and players in the coming weeks and months.

"Development for Apple Watch is right on schedule," Cook said during a call with analysts and media, as reported by GameSpot sister site CNET.

When Apple originally announced the Apple Watch in September 2014, the company had only confirmed an "early 2015" release date for the device.

The base Apple Watch model will cost $350, though Apple will also offer a more expensive "Watch Edition" version (pictured above) that features an 18-karat gold casing and a display protected by sapphire crystal. An Apple Watch Sport model will also be available, though pricing has not been announced.

During the financial call this week, Cook said his expectations "are very high" for Apple Watch.

"I'm using it every day and love it and can't live without it," he said. "I see that we're making great progress on the development of it."

Regarding the third-party developer support for Apple Watch, Cook said that the number of outside studios making apps for the device is "impressive."

A variety of bands--six in all--will be available for the Apple Watch, including stainless steel and leather straps. These are interchangeable (using a proprietary strap design), meaning users won't be locked into one style or another.

The device has a built-in heart rate sensor and gyroscope, as well as haptic feedback. The Apple Watch can also determine the difference between a tap and a press, and features wireless, inductive charging. It also comes with support for Apple's personal digital assistant, Siri.

Apple Watches require an iPhone because the two devices have been designed to work together. However, users won't need to buy a new iPhone 6 to use the watch, as Apple Watches are also compatible with iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, and iPhone 5c models.

First Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare DLC Out Now--Adds Zombies, Guns, and John Malkovich

Activision and Sledgehammer Games have released the first expansion for last year's Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, introducing more maps and weapons, along with a zombies mode featuring celebrities such as John Malkovich and Bill Paxton.

The Havoc expansion is available today for Xbox 360 and Xbox One, and--per Micosoft's exclusivity agreement with Activision--will be released for PlayStation consoles and PC later on. The DLC is included with the game's $50 expansion pass, or can be purchased by itself for $15.

Below is rundown of everything Havoc contains. Be sure to check out the image gallery at the bottom of this post for an even closer look at the add-on.

  • Four new multiplayer maps: Core, Urban, Sideshow, Drift.
  • Exo Zombies mode: This co-op mode sees player taking on the role of four Atlas Corporation employees played by celebrities John Malkovich, Bill Paxton, Rose McGowan, and John Bernthal as they fight against a "new breed" of zombies.
  • New weapons: the AE4 directed energy assault rifle and custom variant, the AE4 Widowmaker.

Havoc is the first of four planned expansions for Advanced Warfare. The other three are called Ascendance, Supremacy, and Reckoning. Activision has not yet announced details on these expansions, though you can be pretty sure they will add more maps, weapons, and zombies content.

Advanced Warfare was the top-selling game of 2014 in the United States, according to the NPD Group. For more, check out GameSpot's review.

Wii U Zelda Spinoff Hyrule Warriors Sells 1 Million

Hyrule Warriors, the Wii U Legend of Zelda spinoff from Nintendo and Koei Tecmo that blends Zelda with Dynasty Warriors, has shipped more than one million units worldwide since its launch last fall.

Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu reported the figure this week, which Joystiq has since confirmed.

Koei Tecmo is marking the milestone by releasing a batch of new Hyrule Warriors wallpapers, which you can download from the game's website or view in the gallery below.

Nintendo and Koei Tecmo aren't finished supporting Hyrule Warriors just yet, as the game will introduce its latest expansion--the Majora's Mask Pack--on February 5. The $8 DLC includes two new characters--Tingle and Young Link--as well as a new Adventure Mode map and three extra costumes.

GameSpot gave Hyrule Warriors an 8/10 score. Reviewer Miguel Concepcion praised the game's balancing of Dynasty Warriors map management with Zelda-style objectives and said it delivered true Zelda fan service from beginning to end. You can read our full review here.

Check Out Dying Light's Destiny-Style Loot Cave

Following open-world Dying Light's release yesterday, fans have discovered that the game contains a reference to Destiny's Loot Caves, special areas players could visit to reap huge bounties of loot.

Reddit user ZachyWillz explains that Dying Light's own loot cave, which players must swim into, is located at the top right of the map. Once you're there, a message appears, saying: "Your destiny is to build your legend (and get loot)."

After this, ZachyWillz claims that infinitely spawning zombies spew forth from the caves. After you clear the undead, another message reportedly pops up that says, "Enough! Patch 1.0.2. has been released! Do more quests!"

Destiny's loot caves were something of a thorn in Bungie's side. After players discovered the first Destiny loot cave, Bungie was quick to remove the exploit--even if players quickly found even more.

Check out the video below to see Dying Light's loot cave.

Ubisoft Deactivating "Fraudulent" Far Cry 4 and Assassin's Creed Unity Copies

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Selasa, 27 Januari 2015 | 23.26

Ubisoft has begun blocking access to some of its PC games having discovered they were acquired on the gray market.

A certain number of PC games reseller sites, such as G2Play and Kinguin, have come under scrutiny in recent months as they are known to sell Steam game codes at prices well below market value. It is how resellers buy these keys in the first place that many publishers and developers have scrutinized.

Now it emerges that Ubisoft commenced deactivating some PC games, such as Far Cry 4 and Assassin's Creed Unity, having determined they were acquired by resellers.

Consumers have already raised complaints about their games being deactivated on the Ubisoft forum, but the publisher insists this is a legal matter.

"We regularly deactivate keys that were fraudulently obtained and resold," the corporation told Eurogamer.

"In this case, we are currently investigating the origin of the fraud, and will update customers as soon as we have more information to share. In the meantime, customers should contact the vendor from whom they purchased the key."

Ubisoft is not the first company to take measures against grey market resellers. In May last year, Hotline Miami publisher Devolver Digital declared it was "actively cancelling" Steam keys sold on the reseller website G2A.

Witcher 3 Considering "Insanity" Mode That Would Wipe Saves When You Die

Polish developer CD Projekt Red is working on an "Insanity" difficulty mode for open-world role-playing game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt that sounds like it would certainly live up to that distinction.

During a recent Twitch live-stream, CD Projekt Red developers said they couldn't reveal too much about the Insanity mode, since it's still in development, but did confirm that one idea being tossed around is that dying even once would wipe your entire game save.

CD Projekt Red's overall goal for Insanity mode is to make it incredibly punishing but still fun, developers said, as reported by Game Informer. The developer didn't reveal any other ideas it had for Insanity mode, and it should be noted that nothing has been finalized.

By comparison, 2011's The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings had two enhanced difficulty modes: Insane and Dark. Both ramped up enemy difficulty and punished you severely for dying.

The Witcher 3 release date is May 19, 2015 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. GameSpot recently got to play three hours of the game, and you can hear our in-depth thoughts in the video above and read our written preview.

Nvidia Admits to Error in GTX 970 Specs and Memory Performance Problems

GPU maker Nvidia has responded to claims that its critically praised GTX 970 uses only 3.5GB of its 4GB of VRAM, resulting in performance drops or stuttering in games that pass over that threshold (usually those running at 1440p and 4K resolutions). In doing so, the company has revealed that the published specifications for the GTX 970 were partially incorrect, with the GPU actually sporting fewer ROPs and L2 cache than consumers and reviewers were initially led to believe.

Nvidia's Senior VP of GPU Engineering Jonah Alben spoke to PC Perspective about the issue, with the publication noting that "despite initial reviews and information from NVIDIA, the GTX 970 actually has fewer ROPs and less L2 cache than the GTX 980. NVIDIA says this was an error in the reviewer's guide and a misunderstanding between the engineering team and the technical PR team on how the architecture itself functioned. That means the GTX 970 has 56 ROPs and 1792 KB of L2 cache compared to 64 ROPs and 2048 KB of L2 cache for the GTX 980."

Nvidia's initial GTX 970 specs weren't entirely accurate.

While not a performance bottleneck in of itself (the GPU's 13 SM units, running at four pixels per clock for a total of 52, limit the GPU more than the 56 pixels per clock processed by the ROPs), the reduced number of ROPs directly affects the GPU's memory subsystem. Unlike the pricier GTX 980, the GTX 970's 4GB of memory is divided into two pools in order to accommodate the reduced ROPs: one 3.5GB section, and one 0.5GB section.

The result, it transpires, is that the 0.5GB section is slower than the larger 3.5GB section. However, it is still faster than system memory accessed using the PCI Express bus.

While this issue does not affect most games, those that feature large textures, or those that are ran at 1440p and higher resolutions may see a drop in performance. In a statement, Nvidia clamied this would be around a three percent drop. It's worth noting that Nvidia's benchmarks only looked at average FPS performance, which may not account for the frame stuttering that some users claim to be experiencing.

A Change.org petition calling for refunds due to the incorrect specifications has since been launched. Those interested in a more technical breakdown of the GTX 970's memory subsystem and performance troubles should check out the full PC Perspective story.

Why You Should Buy a Vita in 2015

Join us over the next few days as we look at all of the leading games consoles and platforms out right now and try to convince you why you should spend your hard-earned cash. Today we're looking at the Vita, with Zorine Te telling you why it's the handheld console of choice.

With an existing library of original games and well-handled ports making use of the handheld's punchy hardware, there's already plenty of reasons why the PlayStation Vita is a great choice for gaming on the go. This year the addition of some hot new games and PlayStation Now functionality could make the Vita your go-to platform for handheld gaming.

The Vita received a slick new model last year: the PlayStation Vita Slim. The original handheld was revamped with a thinner and lighter body and a longer battery life. While the Vita Slim (also known as the PlayStation Vita 2000) sports an IPS LED screen that is less impressive than that of the original model's OLED screen, games on the Vita still look sharp and colourful, and action still plays out smoothly.

The Library

It has been nearly three years since the Vita first launched in North America, and no longer can Vita owners cry for a lack of games.

Tearaway

Media Molecule's Tearaway connects the real world with its virtual one to create a game that taps into the potential of the Vita's touch screen capabilities and controls. The charming and wondrous visuals in Tearaway are brought to life on the Vita's vibrant screen. If you prefer your platformers to be challenging, roguelike Spelunky is a pleasure (and pain) to sink into. While the game is available on other platforms, the Vita iteration offers responsive controls that are better-suited to the game and a UI that is easier to see on the five-inch screen.

Velocity 2X sets itself apart as a platformer with shoot 'em up elements that dazzled us and earned itself our 2014 Vita Game of the Year award. The game's mechanics work symbiotically with each level's design, making the fast and flashy chase for that perfect run all the more rewarding.

Need a hit of nostalgia? The Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster brings two classic RPGs for the price of one to the handheld. The Vita-exclusive Persona 4 Golden is more than just a remaster of the PlayStation 2 classic; laden with new features and gameplay improvements, it offers a refined take on role-playing games that sets itself apart from others in the genre.

Resident Evil 2

If you've always felt like you've missed the legacy of other established series, the Vita offers a plethora of PlayStation classics, too. Couldn't muster the courage to play through horror games when you were younger? Grab the classic Resident Evil 2 or Silent Hill for scares on the go. Don't understand why Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is generating so much excitement? Make your way through the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection while in transit. The Vita offers a portable means to catch up on experiences first established on the PlayStation consoles of old. Throw in some triple-A games such as Telltale's The Walking Dead, Borderlands 2, and Minecraft, and there is little argument against the variety of games the Vita is able to offer.

Upcoming Games

The Vita's library stands to expand this year with both original games and sequels. The gorgeous turn-based RPG Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines, which has players battling monsters to accumulate points. These points allow the player to marry deities and produce children. The player's family line is beset by a curse that causes all members of the bloodline to die in two years, so progress through the game is made in generations. Last year, Atlus announced Persona 4: Dancing All Night, which catapults the Persona 4 cast into spinoff rhythm-game territory.

Severed

From the creators of the Luchadore-themed beat 'em up Guacamelee! comes Vita-exclusive action game Severed. The game is fronted by a one-armed heroine who must slash her way through colourful monsters in a non-linear world.

Then there are cross-platform games like Resident Evil: Revelations 2, Mighty No. 9, Olliolli2: Welcome to Olliwood, and Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, all of which have had predecessors that have graced a handheld console.

Square Enix has confirmed it is working on a new entry into the SaGa RPG series, with SaGa 2015 announced exclusively for the Vita last year, although the publisher is yet to confirm whether the game will be released outside of Japan. Similarly, cult-classic horror series Corpse Party may be making a Vita entry with a domain for Corpse Party: Blood Drive registered by localisation company XSEED Games earlier this month.

The potential offerings of PlayStation Now shouldn't be overlooked either. The service unlocks a library of PlayStation 3 games which can be streamed to the Vita. At the moment PlayStation Now's Vita functionality is still in beta, so it may be worth testing the waters (i.e. your internet connection) before picking up a long-term subscription.

The Hardware

The Vita Slim contains a quad-core CPU capable of pushing 2GHz, making it twice as powerful as that of the 3DS and enabling it to stream both PS3 and PS4 games. Both the screen and rear panel are touch responsive, and the console weighs in at a reasonable 0.48 pounds (219 grams.)

While the Vita Slim does contain 1GB of internal storage, a proprietary memory card is necessary for owners who intend to frequent the PS Store. Cards are available in a range of sizes up to 64GB.

A brand new Vita bundled with either Borderlands 2, The Walking Dead, or Madden NFL 13 will set you back $200 and includes an 8GB memory card. If you already have a subscription to PlayStation Plus, the Vita also gets access to its own selection of free games for download.

Other Stuff

In addition to the PlayStation Now, which enables streaming of PS3 games to the handheld, the Vita supports remote play from the PS4. This can be achieved in one of two ways. The first method allows players to connect remotely to their PS4 through the Vita via an internet connection, allowing the Vita to function as a secondary screen. The second method requires the Vita to connect to the PS4 directly by receiving a signal sent from the console and requires the handheld to remain within range.

Hit up some Destiny in bed or on the toilet--just make sure the wifi connection is sturdy to minimize lag. Certain Vita games also support cross-save, allowing players to pick-up game progress on the Vita where they left off on the PS4 or PS3.

And let's not forget last year's launch of the PlayStation TV, which brings Vita games onto a TV screen. The PlayStation TV can read both physical Vita games and download digital games that have been purchased. While the PS TV may not be a necessary add-on to the Vita, it's nice to have the option to bring some of the handheld's more visually appealing games onto a larger screen.

With a library of games that make use of the system's hardware, a host of streaming capabilities, and the cross-save feature, the PlayStation Vita is a powerful handheld that offers expansive standalone experiences which are heightened when complemented with a PS4.
