Steam Changes Its Game Trading Policy

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Minggu, 30 November 2014 | 23.25

Valve has changed Steam's policy to disallow users from immediately trading games purchased as gifts.

The company made the announcement with brief post to the Steam Trading Cards Group page. "We've made this change to make trading gifts a better experience for those receiving the gifts," Valve said. "We're hoping this lowers the number of people who trade for a game only to have the game revoked later due to issues with the purchaser's payment method."

Games purchased as gifts can still be gifted at any time, of course, but if you're just keeping the item in your inventory you won't be able to trade it for 30 days after purchase. Theoretically, this should help prevent cases where users buy games from third parties only to have those keys revoked, as was the case for some users who bought Sniper Elite III back in June.

If you're looking for great deals on Steam games, Steam is currently holding its Exploration-themed fall sale.

New RTS From Command & Conquer Creators Grey Goo Gets a Release Date

Real-time strategy game Grey Goo will release on PC via Steam on January 23, 2015, developer Petroglyph has announced.

Petroglyph originally planned to follow its Alpha testing with a Closed Alpha and more comprehensive Beta Testing, but it said that the information it already gathered on balance and stability was enough to come up with a road map that would take it all the way to launch.

"We know that many of you were hoping to be involved in a more full-blown Beta Testing phase," it said. "However, instead, we have been focused on using the data we received to improve the game so that we can get Grey Goo into your hands and onto your computer as soon as possible."

"We have a rich, lengthy background as RTS developers, dating all the way back to our time on the original Command & Conquer at Westwood Studios," Executive Producer at Petroglyph Ted Morris said back when the game was first announced. "We want to bring back some of what made those 'traditional' RTS games great while addressing all the lessons we've learned along the way."

Petroglyph said it will release more information about the game in the months leading to launch, starting with developer diary above.

Best-Selling Novel The Pillars of the Earth Is Being Made Into a Game

Blackguards developer Daedalic Entertainment has announced that it will develop a game based on Ken Follett's best-selling historical novel The Pillars of the Earth.

The book isn't the kind that usually gets adapted by game developers. Written by Ken Follett and first published in 1989, the novel follows disputes between clergy, nobility, and regular people, revolving around the building of a cathedral in a tumultuous 12th century England. The book was made into a miniseries in 2010 that aired on Starz in the US and Channel 4 in the UK.

Founder and CEO of Daedalic Carsten Fichtelmann that the adventure game genre would be the most suitable way to adapt that material.

"I'm thrilled that The Pillars of the Earth is going to be turned into a computer game by Daedalic," Follett said. "I believe this will bring my work to the attention of a new generation of readers."

The game is set to release on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and iOS in 2017, alongside a new book in the series.

Broken Age Act 2 Coming in Early 2015

Broken Age Act 2 is now set to release in early 2015, developer Double Fine has announced.

Double Fine also said it's now able to playtest the game from beginning to end, which is taking testers 8-12 hours to complete.

"The goal now is to get all the finale work done so we can hit Alpha on all of Act 2 by the end of the year. That means, as you may have guessed based on recent updates and documentary episodes, the Act 2 ship that will deliver the complete adventure is now looking like it will be early next year."

Broken Age made a lot of headlines in 2012 with its extremely successful Kickstarter campaign, surpassing its initial goal of $400,000 with a total of $3.3 million from 87,142 backers.

GameSpot's review of Broken Age Act 1 gave the game a 7/10 for its terrific voice acting and writing.

Earlier this month, Double Fine announced that it had to cancel an unannounced project and layoff 12 of its employees after a deal with an unnamed publisher fell through.

Does Blizzard's Shooter Overwatch Live Up to the Hype?

Hype? Its the first time I hear someone even mentioning this game. Hell its been only 5min when I learned about this game. Though game looks fun, kinda TF2, as they mentioned. Though I don't feel buying that kind of games anymore, where its just online shooting and nothing else. What for lot of people is enough, what is good, but I don't know if for me is. I bought TF2 back at the days when i come out, it seemed fine back then, but would I buy it now? I don't think so, especcialy when lot of that kind of games are free now days. Maybe not as good in quality but still. It looks kinda like Archeblade or whatever too, of course better, and not some pay 2 win crap. Even though I don't really like Blizzard, but I know they make good quality games. I guess I'll see. It looks good, I like characters, though as I understand there's no simple deathmatch? Just some kind of defending and stuff. Unless with time they will add more modes.

The Connection Between Overwatch and Blizzard's Cancelled Project Titan

Overwatch was the surprise, team-based shooter announced at this year's Blizzcon. But coming so soon on the heels of official word that the rumored MMO project Titan was cancelled, it's only natural to assume that some portions of that game live on within Blizzard's new title.

Earlier today, during the game's reveal, Blizzard senior vice president of story and franchise development Chris Metzen had said that Overwatch shares a "spiritual continuity," but that they are "pretty different." He also described Titan as "kooky and ambitious."

During a press conference for Overwatch later that same day, Metzen elaborated on those comments further. After answering a question about the connection between Titan and Overwatch, Metzen replied, "I'm not going to get into what [Titan] was going to be or what we wanted it to be. I can tell you what it was, in a way, it was frustrating. It was a big, giant idea; it was almost like six video games in one. It was the most ambitious game ever. It was fun to try to tackle it, and boy did we tackle it. We wrestled with it for a long time. And it sucked; we couldn't figure it out. It makes you just [clenches his fist], we couldn't crack it.

"Imagine this amazing team just frustrated. 'Why can't we do this?' It's trying to fret a chord and write the song. 'We can't write the song, why can't it just sound awesome?' Can't find the harmony, whatever. And when we decided to go another way, like Jeff was saying, we've got this hook, 'Why aren't we doing that? We love that.' And we decided to do it and, suddenly, 'Boom!' The music just exploded. And we started looking at [Overwatch] for what it was, and it unleashed this tidal wave of passion and certainty and distilled, clear ideas. And this world idea. It was just this monstrous thing of energy.

"It's been the funnest year, getting our feet back under us, getting our surety back. That magnetic north thing, we found it again, and it feels good. It was part of that emotionality on the stage this morning. To some degree, we needed to get it back, and we found it. And I hope the people look at Overwatch as a very clever game. But I'll tell you, under the hood, we needed this, just as developers to feel that lightning coursing through it again."

Whatever Titan was, it's clear that Overwatch took any potential, remnant ideas from that project in a new direction. And from what we've played so far Blizzard may be on to something with their first foray into the shooter genre. We took a deeper dive into the gameplay and offered up our initial impressions earlier today.

What do you think of Overwatch so far? Is this the kind of project you were hoping/expecting to see from Blizzard? Let us know in the comments.

Microsoft Exec Talks Bigger Xbox One Hard Drives, More Couch Co-Op Games

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 07 November 2014 | 23.26

Microsoft Xbox gaming executive Phil Spencer recently addressed the subject of bigger Xbox One hard drives and a desire for more couch co-op games through a series of posts on Twitter.

First, Spencer talked about the topic of bigger Xbox One hard drives, saying he understands "the need" for more space, though he says using an external hard drive is a temporary workaround.

As Spencer mentions, the most internal hard drive space offered today on Xbox One is 1 TB, which comes by way of the special-edition Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare bundle. With games today often weighing in at 50 GB and up, hard drive space can fill up quickly for people who play lots of games.

The standard Xbox One model ships with a 500 GB hard drive. Microsoft has not announced plans to offer anything larger than 1 TB.

Switching topics, on the subject of couch co-op games, Spencer said he would like to see more of these in the future for Xbox One. The recently released downloadable game Chariot (get it today for $15) is a strong example, and he hopes more will follow.

Finally, and on another unrelated topic, Spencer said he recently visited Fable series developer Lionhead Studios and was impressed by what he saw of Xbox One game Fable Legends.

In other big Microsoft news, the company's $2.5 billion deal to buy Swedish developer Mojang and the Minecraft series has closed, meaning the franchise now officially belongs to Microsoft.

Bungie Gifts Unique Destiny Gun to Brain Surgery Patient

Developer Bungie has gifted a unique Destiny weapon to a brain surgery patient following doctor's advice that playing the first-person shooter could help him recover.

The story comes from Reddit user Bkbunny87, who explained in great detail about her husband Eric's health status and how Bungie was able to step in and warm their hearts.

In the last year, Eric had seven brain surgeries, three of which involved removing parts of his brain, resulting in memory loss. Though his condition was stable, Eric wanted to play Destiny when it was released in September, close to when he needed to have another surgery operation.

Eric's exclusive Fate Of All Fools scout rifle

"He wanted it badly enough that two weeks ago he described the game in detail to his wonderful Neurologist," his wife explained. To her surprise, the doctor said video games can work as an excellent physical therapy tool for people suffering from brain and memory damage.

"I have been shocked how well he has taken to it," she wrote about her husband's Destiny habits. "Once an avid cook, he was no longer able to navigate our kitchen--but with Destiny, it was like a duck to water. He has always been exceptionally good at games, and it seems like that hadn't changed a bit. It's been a joy to watch him."

She goes on to say that Destiny's effect on Eric's health and outlook has been dramatic. "He has been going out more, doing chores, making jokes," she says. "The effect of playing the game on his mood has been almost staggering."

It wasn't all great, however, as she reports that Eric has trouble communicating with friends in Destiny's raid missions. This led to his fireteam getting frustrated with him, she says.

This story has found its way to Bungie, as community manager David "Deej" Dague reached out to Eric and sent him a care package, presumably stuffed with all manner of Destiny goodies. In addition, Bungie sent Eric an in-game weapon, the super-rare Fate Of All Fools scout rifle (above). Eric is the only gamer out there with this weapon, as it apparently won't be released publicly until a future update.

Watch This Halo: Master Chief Collection TV Spot Set To Queen's "We Will Rock You"

With Microsoft's highly anticipated Xbox One game Halo: The Master Chief Collection now just days away, the company is ramping up marketing efforts for the title. One such campaign is a new TV spot featuring Queen's "We Will Rock You" that will air this weekend during various NFL broadcasts.

The commercial rather ingeniously syncs up Halo weapon sounds with the track's iconic, thumping intro for a dramatic effect. It also ends by reminding everyone that you can now buy an Xbox One starting at $350, the lowest official pricing since the system launched a year ago this month.

The Master Chief Collection launches on November 11 exclusively for Xbox One. In addition to remastered versions of Halo 1-4 and multiplayer support for every game, the package includes access to Ridley Scott's Halo: Nightfall, as well as a beta key for December's Halo 5: Guardians beta.

We recently learned that the game's hefty day-one update has been reduced in size from 20 GB to 15 GB. For more on The Master Chief Collection, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Witcher 3 Getting 16 Free DLC Packs

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 06 November 2014 | 23.26

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt developer CD Projekt Red today announced a free DLC program for the 2015 role-playing game, and it does not disappoint. The studio will release a whopping 16 add-on packs for the RPG, all of which will be completely free, and are not tied to any platform.

The first bundle of DLC expansions for The Witcher 3 will be released on February 25, a day after the game's public release. This content will come in the form of the Temerian Armor Set (includes horse armor) and the Beard and Hairstyle Set for main character Geralt.

After February 25, DLC bundles featuring two expansions will be released every week. Other content will include more quests and personalization options. CD Projekt Red has also released a Q&A about the free Witcher 3 DLC, which should clear up any questions you might have. You can read the full Q&A below.

You might be wondering why CD Projekt Red is giving away all the DLC instead of charging for it like so many other publishers do. CD Projekt Red co-founder Marcin Iwinski explains in an open letter to fans that offering free DLC is unfortunately "quite rare these days."

"As gamers, we nowadays have to hold on tight to our wallets, as surprisingly right after release, lots of tiny pieces of tempting content materialize with a steep price tag attached. Haven't we just paid a lot of cash for a brand new game?" he says.

"As CD Projekt Red, we strongly believe this is not the way it should work and, with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, we have decided to do it differently," he added. "This is our way of saying thank you for buying our game."

The Witcher 3 launches February 24 across Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Q: What do I have to do to receive the 16 free DLCs?

A: The only thing you need to do to receive the 16 DLCs is purchase The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. All of the DLCs will be available for free on every platform (i.e. Xbox One, PC, and PlayStation 4).

Q: Do I have to pre-order to get the free DLCs?

A: No, each piece of content will be available for download regardless of you buying the game before or after launch on February 24th, 2015.

Q: I have the standard version of the game (i.e. not the Collector's Edition). Do I still get the free DLCs?

A: Yes. You get the 16 DLCs regardless of the version of the game you bought (i.e. standard or Collector's, digital or physical).

Q: What's the plan? When can I expect the DLCs to be released?

A: The plan is to release a new DLC bundle (each bundle contains two DLCs) on a weekly basis, following the game's launch February 24th, 2015. The first DLC bundle will be released the next day on February 25th. The next bundle will be available for download a week after that, on March 4th, the next on March 11th, and so on. The first bundle will contain the Temerian Armor Set and a Beard and Hairstyle Set for Geralt. The second bundle will contain an additional quest and an alternative look for one of the game's main characters--Yennefer of Vengerberg.

Q: Where can I find out more?

A: You can find more details on thewitcher.com. At this moment, four DLCs (two bundles) are revealed. The remaining DLCs will be unveiled each week after launch.

The Devious World of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

The Mushroom Kingdom's diminutive Toad may not be as popular as Mario or Yoshi, but he's finally getting his turn the spotlight in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. The spinoff game for Wii U is based on the Captain Toad mini games from Super Mario 3D World, where you have to navigate small levels in search of a golden star. For Treasure Tracker, the game's been expanded to over 70 levels, and Toad's no longer exploring alone; he's now accompanied by his female counterpart, Toadette.

Unlike their friends, the Toads lack the ability to jump, which may seem limiting given the task at hand, but every level is outfitted with clever conveyances that make up for your lack of vertical mobility. Moving platforms, pipes, stairs, and ramps get you to where you're going, but even with all of that assistance, you're going to run into some perplexing situations now and again. This is especially true if you're chasing special challenges and the three gems hidden in every level.

Each stage is a complex environment that needs to be heavily scrutinized in order to uncover all of its secrets. By rotating the world and zooming in, you can get a good idea of where most secrets lie, but discovering the path to glory is sometimes easier said than done. You'll have to rotate every platform, destroy every block, and analyze every obstacle to uncover all of the game's riches. That said, there are some scenarios where you have to be thorough rather than clever, making sure to defeat every enemy, just in case they possess the gem that you need to complete your collection.

Collecting gems is largely optional, but you eventually reach a point in the game when you need a certain amount in order to proceed. At that point, you may find yourself backtracking, and while returning to earlier levels may not sound like fun, they're so chock full of character and thematic variety that making repeated trips is less of a bore than you might think. The bright and colorful worlds in Captain Toad reek of innocence and childlike charm, but the puzzles within are anything but easy or simple. However, as you progress through the game, improving your awareness and understanding of the game's mechanics, you begin to see things in earlier stages that you may have missed during your first trip, and the sense of accomplishment sinks in as you find every gem, and check off every stage's special challenge.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is an adorable little game, but it's also deviously challenging. Thankfully, it subtly ramps the complexity of its puzzles, keeping you engaged and curious at every turn. It may have a simple premise, but it will no doubt surprise you, and if you're anything like me, it will make you question your puzzle solving skills more often than you'd like. Puzzle lovers and Mario fanatics beware: Captain Toad means business. Keep an eye out for it on December 5, 2014 in the US, and January 2, 2015 in Europe.

Excavated Atari Games Going For Up To $500 On Ebay

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 05 November 2014 | 23.25

Some of the thousands of copies of various Atari games dug out of a New Mexico landfill earlier this year are now being auctioned off on eBay, with asking prices as high as $500.

The city of Alamogordo, New Mexico--the location of the famous "Atari Dump"--is now selling copies of E.T: The Extra-Terrestrial, Asteroids, Defender, Warlords, and Missile Command on eBay through the Tularosa Basin Historical Society.

The marquee offering is E.T, the failed video game tie-in for Steven Spielberg's 1982 theatrical hit. eBay listings for E.T. are already seeing asking prices as high as $500 or more. Should you win an auction for E.T., or any of the other excavated games, you'll receive a certificate of authenticity and a property tag. You'll also get a pamphlet with photos from 1983 and the dig earlier this year.

Following the initial auction wave, an additional 70 copies of E.T. will be sold through future eBay auctions. "Then that is it. This will never occur again," the city writes.

Head over to this eBay page to see everything up for auction from the Atari dig.

In addition to the auction, Alamogordo is giving away copies of the excavated games to museums around the world. A deeper dive into the Atari landfill dig will be chronicled in upcoming documentary Atari: Game Over, which was produced by Xbox and will debut on November 20.

Xbox One Stereo Headset Drops To $50

Microsoft's official Xbox One stereo headset can now be had for $50 on Amazon, a markdown of $10 from what the headset is selling for in Microsoft's own store right now.

If you're in the market for something flashier, the special-edition Armed Forces version of the Xbox One stereo headset sells for $60 on Amazon and $70 through Microsoft's site.

The Xbox One stereo headset originally sold for $80 (and $90 for the Armed Forces version), though Microsoft has since cut the price.

The headset features an over-the-ear design, including breathable fabric ear cups. It also sports a boom microphone that can fold up when you're not using it. The Xbox One stereo headset is also fairly light, weighing just 9 ounces.

The Division Dev Talks Graphics Parity Between Xbox One, PS4, and PC

The Division developer Massive Entertainment has responded to the suggestion that the studio may need to "downgrade" the game's graphics from PC for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions. In an interview with Open World Games [YouTube], Massive's Martin Hulberg said the term "downgrade" doesn't accurately encapsulate how the studio is approaching development on The Division.

"Downgrading is a weird term to use," he said. "Obviously, we want to make a game that looks the best it can on its respective format, so Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. So I think the term downgrade is a bit confusing and weird because we're trying to get the most out of every machine we use. So Xbox gets its attention, PlayStation gets its attention, and PC of course will be able to cram it up a bit more depending on the hardware you have."

Asked if Massive was planning to have all versions of The Division feature the same specifications (i.e. 1080p or 60fps), Hultberg said every iteration of the game will be treated individually.

"We address every console, every platform as its own version," he said. "So we try to stay away from the thing where you go for the least common denominator and everybody suffers for it. We want to make a good experience on all respective formats."

Also in the interview, Hultberg teased that Ubisoft may allow gamers to play The Division ahead of its release next year through an alpha or beta.

"We have a long experience in doing online games dating back to Ground Control and World In Conflict," he said. "And I think the chance to involve people to do tests is very important. I suspect we will release more details on the possibilities for public tests later on."

The Division officially launches sometime in 2015. If you have not been blown away by the game yet, there is a possible explanation for that. "[The Division is] a very ambitious game. We are saving many of the most interesting parts for later," Ubisoft Massive managing director David Polfeldt told GameSpot in June. "We have a lot of interesting things in the game that were not shown [at E3]. So there's a lot to come."

In addition, Ubisoft recently said that The Division is aiming to offer "endless gameplay."

Research Shows No Link Between Video Game Violence And Real-World Violence

Grand Theft Auto V

In September, researchers at Villanova University and Rutgers University published the results of an in-depth study that suggested violent video games do not lead to increases in real-world violent behavior. Now, a pair of follow-up studies from Stetson University researcher Christopher Ferguson have reached the same general conclusion, finding that there is no evidence for a link between video game or movie violence and real-world violent behavior.

In fact, as reported by Medical Daily, Ferguson's studies found that the rise in popularity of violent video games was actually related to a decrease in youth violence.

For his first study, Ferguson measured homicide rates from 1920 to 2005 against the frequency and graphic nature of violence in popular movies. A "slight" link between violent movies and murder rates was found during the mid-20th century, but the connection lessened in the 1990s, a period when movie violence was linked with fewer homicides overall.

The second study focused on video game violence. Ferguson looked at Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) data for games released between 1996 and 2011 as well as federal youth crime data for the same period. What he found was that violent video game consumption was "strongly" correlated with declines in the instances of youth violence.

This downward correlation is likely related to "chance," and should not be taken as an indication that playing violent video games can lead to a safer world, Ferguson said.

"Society has a limited amount of resources and attention to devote to the problem of reducing crime," Ferguson said in a statement. "There is a risk that identifying the wrong problem, such as media violence, may distract society from more pressing concerns such as poverty, education, and vocational disparities and mental health. This research may help society focus on issues that really matter and avoid devoting unnecessary resources to the pursuit of moral agendas with little practical value."

Ferguson's study was published in the Journal of Communication.

For further reading on the subject of violence in games and its effect on society, you can read GameSpot's interview with Villanova professor Patrick Markey.

Dragon Age Inquisition Began As A Multiplayer-Only Game

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Selasa, 04 November 2014 | 23.26

Some fans were surprised earlier this year when BioWare announced that Dragon Age: Inquisition would include a franchise-first multiplayer mode. The decision to add multiplayer to the mix wasn't a last-minute choice, however, BioWare says in a new interview, revealing that the game actually began its life as a multiplayer-only experience.

"Weirdly, we actually had a project code-named Blackfoot which was the first game we had that was looking at Frostbite," Inquisition executive producer Mark Darrah told GamesIndustry International. "It was a Dragon Age game, multiplayer only, that was in development before Dragon Age II came out. That became the core of what became Dragon Age Inquisition, the techlines, more than any of the development, so we've actually been looking at [multiplayer] a long time."

Darrah went on to say that the multiplayer is actually at the heart of many role-playing experiences.

"It's sitting at a table with your friends and playing a pen and paper experience," he said. "It's been a single-player experience on computers for a long time, but Baldur's Gate had multiplayer co-op through the story. This is an attempt to get that feeling back, something you can do, get a fantasy experience, but much more bite-size."

"Skyrim changed the landscape for role-playing games completely" - Mark Darrah

Inquisition's multiplayer mode is limited to a separate co-op experience that does not tie into the main game in any way. You can read more about Inquisition's multiplayer component here.

Also in the interview, Darrah spoke about the impact that the massive success of Bethesda's Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which has sold more than 20 million copies, had on the RPG genre overall.

"Skyrim changed the landscape for role-playing games completely," he said. "Now the expectations of your other fans, they're changing too. People age, they typically have less time for games, so it changes their expectations in terms of gameplay segments. It also results in some nostalgia. so they may become even more firm in their attachment to previous features. Now suddenly you have 15 million people that have basically had the first RPG they've ever played as Skyrim. They have totally different expectations of what storytelling is, what exploration is, and I think exploration is really where we've seen the biggest change."

Darrah said one reason RPGs are growing in popularity of late is due to the power of new consoles to create bigger, more fleshed out worlds.

"The hardware has brought back the ability to do big again and I think that's what's bringing role-playing games back to the forefront," he said. "What we've traditionally seen is that as a console generation turns over the dominant genre has changed. Shooters weren't the dominant genre a generation ago, it was racing games. If you go back before that, to the PlayStation 1 era, it was actually role-playing games. I think that's what we may be seeing here. I don't know that role-playing games will be necessarily dominant but I do think we may see open-world exploration games being the dominant genre of this generation."

Inquisition launches on November 18 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. Xbox One owners with an EA Access membership ($5/month or $30/year) can play a six-hour trial of the game starting on November 13.

Despite Analyst Concerns, Activision Says Advanced Warfare Can Outsell Ghosts

While some video game industry analysts believe Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare won't sell as many copies as 2013's Call of Duty: Ghosts, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg doesn't see it that way.

"We see purchase intent well above last year and we see engagement with the brand in social media channels all being markedly up, so I'm still optimistic," Hirshberg told GamesIndustry International.

Hirshberg also pointed out that many analyst sales estimates for Advanced Warfare were based on preorders for physical versions of the game. Due to the growing popularity of digitally delivered content, measuring pre-release purchase intent using preorders of physical games alone might not be the best way to go about it, Hirshberg said.

"Preorders are a good barometer for day one, but I don't think they reflect the overall demand for the product," he explained. "[They] don't represent what they used to--because of the move to digital and all the ways people can buy the game."

Also in the interview, Hirshberg revealed the message he gave to Advanced Warfare developer Sledgehammer Games at the onset of development. In short, he wanted the team to take risks and push things forward. "Our brief to them was: Go further than you think we want you to go. Make us nervous in a good way--and come back with new ideas and new experiences ... and they did," Hirshberg said.

Finally, Hirshberg addressed Sledgehammer's canceled third-person Call of Duty game, which was in development under the codename Fog of War. Though there are no plans to bring this game back to life, Hirshberg said it's a title that "I want to play some day."

Watch Conan O'Brien "Review" Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS ABOUT CALL OF DUTY: ADVANCED WARFARE.

We've already told you what we think about Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, but what about comedian Conan O'Brien? If you were waiting for O'Brien's opinion, now you're in luck, as he has posted his "review" of Sledgehammer Games' just-released shooter as part of his "Clueless Gamer" segment.

Check out the video above to see O'Brien play a few minutes of Advanced Warfare and make all manner of jokes about the game. O'Brien makes fun of the game's funeral scene ("hold X to pay respects") and the way in which you perform a double jump--"I'd like to double tap that A," he says.

O'Brien also jabs at the virtual version of Kevin Spacey depicted in the game, saying his character's eyes are not rendered very believably.

According to a previous report, some publishers pay to have their games appear on O'Brien's Clueless Gamer segment, though it is unclear if this was the case with Advanced Warfare.

Advanced Warfare was released on Monday through the Day Zero edition and is available everywhere today. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's review and what other critics are saying.

PS4 Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Is 1080p, Xbox One Version Lower

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 03 November 2014 | 23.26

The Xbox One version of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare runs at a minimum native resolution of 1360x1080, while the PlayStation 4 iteration of the first-person shooter runs natively in 1080p.

Asked about the game's resolution during a recent Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, developer Sledgehammer Games co-founder Michael Condrey revealed the resolution details.

"Minimum Xbox One resolution is 1360x1080, and dynamically scales from there to full 1080p," Condrey said. "That's over 50% increase from last year. Advanced Warfare runs native 1080p on PS4."

On the subject of frame rate, Condrey said both the Xbox One and PS4 versions of Advanced Warfare run at 60fps.

You can buy Advanced Warfare today through the Day Zero edition. The game officially launches tomorrow for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. In our 8.0 review, we praised Advanced Warfare's content-rich multiplayer and its futuristic combat technology, but lamented its inconsistent narrative.

Lord of the Rings Actor Andy Serkis Playing Villain in Stealth Game, Volume

Guy Gisborne

Lord of the Rings actor Andy Serkis will play a lead role in upcoming stealth game Volume, from Thomas Was Alone creator Mike Bithell. The Gollum actor will voice a villain named Guy Gisborne.

You might be wondering how Bithell was able to attract Serkis to the project. After all, Serkis--who will appear in next year's Star Wars: Episode VII--is a top talent in Hollywood. According to Bithell, Serkis was his "dream" actor for the role, and, after some initial struggles, Bithell was able to snag him for the game with help from British casting studio Side.

"We'd been looking for an actor to play Gisborne for a while, and even come close to casting it with different folks," Bithell told Gamasutra. "After one of those attempts fell through, it was a back to the drawing board moment, and I decided to stop compromising, and go for my dream actor for the role-- who I'd get if practicality and reality weren't an issue."

"Thank god [Serkis] said yes, and had some time clear in his busy schedule," Bithell added.

This is not Serkis' first video game appearance. He played Gollum in the Lord of the Rings licensed games, and had parts in Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and Heavenly Sword."

Volume launches in 2015 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and PC.

Some Xbox One Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Copies Facing Download Issues

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare's release today (through the Day Zero edition) did not go entirely smoothly. Some users are reporting problems downloading their pre-ordered copies of the game. This issue has been fixed for most people, but if you are still encountering trouble, Microsoft advises that you delete the game and redownload it. Not ideal, for sure, but it's at least a fix.

"We've received reports that some users are having issues getting their preordered copy of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare," Microsoft said on its Xbox Live support page today. "We're happy to say that our team has fixed the problem, but if you are still experiencing any issues, delete the game and redownload it. Thanks for your patience while we got this issue worked out. Have fun!"

You can download Advanced Warfare today on Xbox One (even if you didn't preorder) through the Day Zero edition. If you buy the game today, you'll even get double XP all day long. The game officially launches tomorrow, November 4, for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Will Dragon Age: Inquisition Restore the Faith?

@Anigmar @soccerpzn @gajbutler Which to me felt better, again, opinions. It never felt chaotic actually, to me, at least. Not saying it's better or worse, but just feels more right to me. But everything else, level design, encounter designs (enemies basically teleporting in out of nowher, I think that's where the feeling of chaos comes from, not the combat mechanic itself), characters, busy-job quests, etc was terrible. But hey, I totally see where you are coming from, people have different tastes, I can respect that.

Watch the First Trailer for Alone in the Dark: Illumination

Atari has released the first trailer for Alone in the Dark: Illumination, the latest installment in the classic horror game series.

Alone in the Dark: Illumination is a four-player, cooperative third-person action-horror game, where "the power of illumination" plays an important role. Players can choose between four playable heroes, each armed with an individual set of special abilities and weapons. The Hunter comes with powerful firearms, the Witch has supernatural powers (like the lighting strike you can see her use in the trailer), the Priest has "divine abilities" like Holy Light, and the Engineer has mechanical items like the Tesla Wall.

Alone in the Dark is being developed by a new studio called Pure FPS, whose members worked on games like Dead Island 2, Bioshock Infinite, and Battlefield 2.

The game will release during holiday 2014, though Atari doesn't have an exact release date yet. Its "Eldritch Edition," which includes a limited edition character and weapon skin and early access to the beta, is now also available to preorder from Steam for $30.

Watch The Making of Space Sim Elite: Dangerous

Frontier Developments, the studio behind Elite: Dangerous, has released a short video about the making of the space sim and its roots in the original Elite released in 1984.

Frontier Developments CEO David Braben explains that one of the biggest challenges in developing the game was getting the feel of the combat right. "It isn't the sort of thing where by having a bigger ship you're immediately going to win. It's all in the details, the turn rates, how heavy should feel, how light," Braben said.

Game Designer Dan Davies added that part of the challenge was building great combat that takes place in an empty space. "Other games can use the environment and gravity to create the gameplay limitations that they need, whereas we had to use the flight model and the ships to essentially create those gameplay limitations," Davies said.

Elite: Dangerous recently rolled out the third stage of its Beta test to players, unlocking even more of the Milky Way for them to explore and introducing a tons of new features like the ability to own multiple ships and mining.

You can jump into the Beta 3 right now by buying the game for $75 through Frontier's online store. The game is scheduled to launch by the end of the year, though Frontier Developments still hasn't settled on an exact date.

Weekly Recap: Xbox One Price Cut, GTA 5 Is 1080p On PS4

(Some Of) The Big Stuff:

More talk of resolution this week, as the PlayStation 4 version of Rockstar Games' upcoming open-world action game Grand Theft Auto V will run at 1080p, according to a new report. The game's 1080p visuals are described as "glimmering." Find out for yourself when the game launches on November 18 for PS4, as well as Xbox One--PC version coming next year..

Very soon you'll be able to get an Xbox One for $350. Ahead of the busy holiday shopping season, Microsoft this week announced a $50 price cut for the Xbox One. The price drop, effective November 2 (that's tomorrow!), is good for all Xbox One systems, including the special-edition bundles that come with copies of Sunset Overdrive, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, and Assassin's Creed Unity.

On Tuesday, Sony released the PlayStation 4's long-awaited and feature-rich 2.0 Update, codenamed Masamune. Among the long list of new features introduced in the update is Share Play, which lets you virtually play couch co-op with a friend. Read more about how it works here.

The Other Stuff (Stories We Like, But Didn't Cover With a Standalone Post):

Lego Minifigures Online developer Funcom announced this week that it is teaming with huge online retailer Amazon to offer the upcoming MMO for Fire TV and various Fire tablets. The game, which is already available on PC, will come to Amazon's devices by the end of the year.

What does Left 4 Dead developer Turtle Rock's upcoming 4v1 shooter Evolve look like on Xbox One? I'm glad you asked, because the studio this week released the first footage of the game running on Xbox One--and it does not disappoint. Watch it right now. We sat down with the studio to learn all about the game, which you can play today on Xbox One, PS4, and PC through an alpha.

Minecraft developer Mojang this week confirmed that the final version of its upcoming PC collectible card game, Scrolls, will launch sometime in November. The game was previously in beta, and had been for many months. The November release date comes with the standard game development warning, however. "We're not going to release it until it's ready, if you know what I mean," Mojang's Owen Hill said.

And now for something completely different. Bayonetta director Hideki Kamiya visited Valve's headquarters in Seattle recently, and he even posted a picture to prove it. WHAT CAN IT MEAN? The only logical conclusion to reach is that Kamiya is working on Half-Life 3 this has nothing to do with Half-Life 3.

Have you been waiting to play BioShock Infinite? If so, next week might be the time to jump in. 2K Games announced this week that BioShock: The Complete Edition will be released on November 4 for Xbox 360 and PS3. It includes the main game and all of its DLC for $40.

Are you hungry for cake? Now you probably are. In celebration of the PlayStation Access YouTube channel reaching 300,000 subscribers, someone (presumably Sony's head chef) baked the team a cake modeled after the PlayStation 4 and DualShock 4 controller. It was a chocolate cake, a moist chocolate cake, according to Sony's Hollie Bennett. In this case, despite what you may have heard, the cake is not in fact a lie.

Retailer Best Buy has announced midnight launch plans for next week's Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, and they are quite extensive. Best Buy, like other retailers, will sell the game at exactly 12:01 AM Eastern at its stores across the US (more than 800 in all) on November 3. November 3 because that's the day the Day Zero edition goes on sale. Best Buy has also announced that, similar to Walmart, you will not need to have previously preordered Advanced Warfare to buy the game at midnight. Woo hoo!

This War of Mine, the game from a team of Polish developers that aims to show the other side of war, got a release date and a new trailer this week. The game will launch on November 14 through Steam and Games Republic for $20, and you can see a new trailer below. If you're not familiar with the game, here's a primer. You do not play as a soldier like in Call of Duty or Battlefield, but rather you control a group of civilians trying to survive a city under fire. You struggle with food and medicine, and you're in constant danger. "The game provides an experience of war seen from an entirely new angle," its developer 11 bit studios writes.

A new study from the folks at SuperData reveals some gender trends about gaming. Via Joystiq, the report showed that men play more MMOs and FPS games, while women--on average--generally gravitate toward mobile games and RPGs. Does this match up with your own personal experiences?

Rugby 2015, the debut of the franchise for current-generation consoles, has been delayed. The game was previously expected to launch by the end of the year, but that is no longer the case, as developer HB Studios announced this week that the game is now coming in 2015. No reason for the delay was announced. When it is released, Rugby 2015 will be available for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, and PC.

Tough times ahead for Call of Duty, as one analyst believes the series has peaked, and Advanced Warfare will sell 40 percent fewer copies than Ghosts and a whopping 70 percent fewer copies than Black Ops II. Analysts are not always right, however. We'll find out soon enough, as Advanced Warfare launches next week. Are you buying a copy this year?

Heads up, retro game fans. Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner announced this week that he has donated a collection of design notes, drawings, correspondence, business records, and software related to his best-known works (Karateka, Prince of Persia, and The Last Express) to The Strong museum in Rochester, New York. The works will be available to researchers at the The Strong's research library, and also to the public in future exhibits.

Video game charity Extra Life announced this week that it has now raised $5.4 million thanks to the coordinated, worldwide efforts of recent charity live-stream marathons. GameSpot played 100 games in 100 hours to raise money, and lots of other sites and studios held campaigns, too. Donations continue to pour in, Extra Life says, and you can do your part until December 31.

In other charity-related news, video game retailer GameStop announced this week that it has renewed its partnership with the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital for its annual "Thanks and Giving" campaign. What this means for you is that when you shop at GameStop this holiday, you'll have a chance to donate to St. Jude at the point of purchase. Last year, GameStop raised more than $1 million through the initiative, and it is aiming higher this year. As a thank you to customers who decide to donate, GameStop will give you a 10 percent off coupon you can use the next time you buy a used game at the retailer.

Fueled by the massive success of Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, the free-to-play game based on the celebrity, publisher Glu Mobile hit a record for single-quarter revenue for the latest period. Oh, the power of celebrity! It's only a matter of time before other celebrities follow suit, I'd have to imagine.

In other Kim Kardashian news, Zynga founder Mark Pincus snapped a stealthy selfie with Kanye West and his wife, Kim Kardashian, during a World Series game last week. He also took a photo of West, Kardashian, and Barry Bonds. Just incredible. Go Giants!

That's it for this week. Have a great weekend!

Early PS3-Exclusive Tactical RPG Gem Valkyria Chronicles Coming to PC

Valkyria Chronicles, an early PlayStation 3-exclusive tactical role-playing game, is coming to PC on November 11, publisher Sega has announced.

In addition to the original game, the PC version is also bundled with all of its DLC. It includes the Hard EX Mode, which offers harder versions of skirmish and main game missions, Challenge of the Edy Detachment, which offers six challenge missions, and two side story campaigns: Edy's Mission "Enter the Edy Detachment," and Selvaria's Mission "Behind Her Blue Flame."

Valkyria Chronicles, in case you haven't played it, is set in a world loosely inspired by 1930s Europe, and puts you in command of the Federation's 7th Platoon, a small force trying to repel an invasion as part of a larger war.

Back in 2008, when Valkyria Chronicles was first released, GameSpot gave the game an 8.5/10 for its exceptionally beautiful visual design and unique combination of turn-based strategy and third-person movement. You can read GameSpot's full review here.

Valkyria Chronicles will cost $18, and will release via digital retailers like Steam.

Nintendo Sales Prove Dedicated Game Devices Are Here to Stay, Despite Smartphones

With games like Kim Kardashian: Hollywood set to make $200 million this year alone, there's no denying that mobile games are a huge business. However, Nintendo doesn't think smartphones are about to replace dedicated game devices.

"It seems that the market status of video games for dedicated platforms is increasingly being reported as pessimistic in contrast with the popularity of smartphones," Nintendo president president Satoru Iwata said at the company's Corporate Management Policy Briefing. But Iwata presented Nintendo sales numbers that contradict that pessimism, showing that dedicated video game platform still have "ample business opportunities."

For example, he said that Nintendo expects that four of its 3DS games will sell at least two million copies each in a short period of time. The first of these, Yo-Kai Watch, which was released in Japan only in July, has already sold 2.8 million copies. Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, released in September, has sold 1.88 million units so far, and is bound to cross the two million mark soon. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, released in Japan in October, exceeded two million already as well. Nintendo is also confident that Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS sales indicate that Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will sell two million copies shortly after their November 21 launch date as well.

"It is true that the sales of video games have been globally polarized between huge hits and ones that do not sell well, but I would like you to know that some blockbusters have consecutively emerged in the field of dedicated video game platforms," Iwata said.

Iwata made similar comments in the beginning of the year, and said that Nintendo should use smartphones to guide players to the console versions of its games as a means to preserve its long-held business strategy.

The New Nintendo 3DS, which is slated to come to the West sometime in 2015, will be region-locked, though Iwata recently said that the policy is not set-in-stone.
