EA Origin's Next Free Game Is From 1995

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 29 Oktober 2014 | 23.26

Electronic Arts is currently giving away copies of 1995 game Crusader: No Remorse as part of the "On the House" promotion for Origin. The game normally sells for $5, but you can get it free today.

EA's On the House games don't come with any strings attached, but there is no saying when the deal will expire, so you're encouraged to act quickly if you want to pick up a free copy.

Crusader: No Remorse was developed by Origin Systems and originally launched in August 1995. You play as a "Silencer," an elite enforcer who works for the World Economic Consortium, but later joins the rebellion. "Now, your former employers better watch their backs because you're coming after them with all the firepower at your command," reads a line from the game's description.

This is an old game, so your current computer shouldn't have any issue running it. But just in case you're wondering, here are the minimum system requirements:

MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Windows XP or Windows Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512MB RAM (1 GB recommended)
  • 3D graphics card compatible with DirectX 7 (compatible with DirectX 9 recommended)
  • 2 GB HDD
  • Mouse, keyboard

EA launched the On the House promotion in March with Dead Space. Other past freebies have included Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger, Dragon Age: Origins, and Bejeweled 3, among others. EA says the goal of the On the House promotion is to show off Origin and "provide a great gaming experience" to players. The publisher also runs Game Time, a promotion where gamers can play titles, usually newer ones, for free for a period of time--often 48 hours.

Microsoft Has No Plans to Sell Standalone White Xbox One Controllers

Currently, the only way to get your hands on a white Xbox One controller is to buy the Sunset Overdrive bundle, and it doesn't sound like this is going to change anytime soon.

Asked on Twitter if Microsoft had any plans to offer the white Xbox One controllers outside of the bundle, executive Aaron Greenberg said: "Not planning white controllers at this time."

Greenberg's response leaves open the possibility that one day Microsoft will offer white Xbox One controllers, but unfortunately, it doesn't sound like that will happen anytime soon.

The Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Xbox One controller

If you're in the market for a new Xbox One controller, your current options are standard black or your choice of a pair of camouflage variations. Microsoft will also sell a special Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Xbox One controller (the same one that's included with the system bundle).

By comparison, Sony offers DualShock 4 controllers for the PlayStation 4 in standard black, as well as white, red, blue, and camouflage.

If history is any indication, Microsoft will eventually offer Xbox One controllers in more colors and styles. After all, there are currently all manner of colors and variations of the Xbox 360 controller available to buy.

On Monday, Microsoft announced a $50 price cut for all Xbox One systems--including the various bundles. The price drop goes into effect on Sunday, November 2 and runs through January 2015. For more on the price drop news, check out GameSpot's editorial on the subject.

Former professional boxer Mike Tyson appeared on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon last night and faced off against himself in a match of classic boxing game Punch-Out!! on NES.

Watch the video above to see the real Tyson, playing as Little Mac, take on the virtual version of himself from the 1986 game. We won't spoil the end for you, but one of the Mike Tysons won.

Tyson previously admitted to being so bad at Punch-Out!! that he couldn't even beat Glass Joe, believed to be the easiest opponent in the game.

The former heavyweight champion Tyson was at the center of Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, as well as 2000's Mike Tyson Boxing for the original PlayStation and 2002's Xbox and PlayStation 2 game Mike Tyson's Heavyweight Boxing.

As for Jimmy Fallon, the late night host/actor/comedian is a big fan of video games.

Civilization, Rise of Nations Designer Revives Big Huge Games, Announces New Title

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 27 Oktober 2014 | 23.26

Big Huge Games is back.

The Maryland-based studio that created games such as Rise of Nations and Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning only to be closed down in 2012 as part of 38 Studios' bankruptcy, is getting a second lease on life, with a new game that you'll be able to play in 2015. Brian Reynolds, who co-founded the first iteration of Big Huge Games in 2000 with Tim Train, acquired the rights to the Big Huge Games name during the 38 Studios auction last year and today announced that their previously announced studio SecretNewCo. is now called Big Huge Games.

Reynolds and Train are heading up the new version of Big Huge Games, which is shifting away from PC and console games in favor of mobile titles. The studio's first game is called DomiNations, which will launch in 2015 for iPhone, iPad, and Android through a partnership with free-to-play juggernaut Nexon--the group that's also behind Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski's new title.

Big Huge Games uses words such as "epic" and "innovative" to describe DomiNations, in part because it will let players virtually travel through the ages on their journey from the stone age to the space age. When I asked what Reynolds think will separate DomiNations from the huge number of other free-to-play strategy games out there, Reynolds starts off with a joke before explaining that the game's "play through the ages" mantra should be a big appeal for gamers.

"Number one, our amazing game design talents, of course (laughs)," he said. "In terms of substantive details, there hasn't been a big mobile strategy game yet that has really taken on the challenge of doing the sweep of human history thing. Moving through the ages; you start in the stone age and you go to the bronze and iron age and the classical age and the medieval age and the gunpowder age and so on."

"If anybody are the guys to do that, then it's us," he added. "Because we come from the background of having done quite a number of different kinds of games … strategy games about all of history in various different genres and turn-based strategy and real-time strategy and so on. So we have a good background in history games."

"I certainly perceive mobile, free-to-play as being the biggest market; the opportunity to reach the largest number of players" -- Brian Reynolds

In DomiNations, you'll be able to choose which nation to play as, even getting to battle with famous figures from history such as Napoleon, Nobunaga, Khan, and Cleopatra, among others. This historical hook is one of the many examples Reynolds cited as reasons he thinks DomiNations will catch on with gamers.

"We also think that players are going to enjoy getting to build wonders of the world, having this huge project that they have to work on, then they get a big, unique reward," he said. "Being able to choose what nation you're going to be. Are you going to be the Chinese are you going to be the British, choices like that. Getting to have a technology tree where you kind of decide which direction you're gonna go. We've got some interesting exploration mechanics where one of the maps starts covered up and you have to decide which direction you're going to explore and that both serves to clear off the map so you have more room to build your city in."

"I always think there's this magical moment when you move up to the next age and suddenly all your archers now have guns. Boy is that cool! You can instantly feel the extra power you have and at the same time, there's this sense of historic authenticity," he added. "I've always felt like moving through the ages of history is a really magical game mechanic. I think it will appeal to players yet again. There are lots of different ways that we've tried to bring our experience in history games and strategy games into … taking this mobile free-to-play strategy genre into some interesting new directions."

DomiNations is a free-to-play game, and this is likely to cause some groans and concerns among fans of past Civilization and Rise of Nations titles. Explaining why Big Huge Games opted for the free-to-play route as opposed to a premium, paid experience like other publishers are doing, Reynolds said making the game free means it can reach the widest audience. He also explained that, while DomiNations will have microtransactions, players who don't spend a penny will still be able to unlock everything.

"I have had a history of going where I perceive the biggest market to be," Reynolds said. "I certainly perceive mobile, free-to-play as being the biggest market; the opportunity to reach the largest number of players. And so, that's exciting to me. It's the same reason I went to Facebook games--boy were a lot of people playing Facebook games. And then even more started playing. It was certainly interesting when I was at Zynga--it really opened my eyes to 'Wow, how many different kinds of players play games than used to play them when I started in 1991'. I never would have dreamed both the kinds of players and the numbers of players that are out there."

"I've always felt like moving through the ages of history is a really magical game mechanic" -- Brian Reynolds

"Obviously, a lot of the games I was doing at Zynga were in the what you might call ultra-casual area, and [DomiNations] is a strategy game," he added. "But nonetheless, it's a mobile strategy game, so I'm a lot more aware now of just how, just how many players one can find--how many different kinds of players one can reach out to."

Reynolds, who has been in the video game business for 23 years, is a journeyman of sorts. He co-founded Civilization studio Firaxis Games alongside Sid Meier, working on various entries in the blockbuster strategy series. He left Firaxis in 1999 and co-founded Big Huge Games in 2000. He spent nine years there, then left to become Zynga's Chief Game Designer, until he quit the social gaming giant in 2013 to found the new version of Big Huge Games.

Regarding the future of Big Huge Games, Reynolds explained that while the studio is no longer making PC or console games, the essence of the studio remains intact. "We're doing games on new platforms and that means you design them differently. The industry is very different now. So it's not saying that we're Big Huge Games means that somehow we want to go back to 2001, and make 2001 games. No, we want to continue our journey but with some of the philosophies of game design that we've always used, that hopefully players will remember and like."

1080p Debate Is A "Weird Echo Chamber," Far Cry Dev Says

Far Cry 4 creative director Alex Hutchinson is not interested what a game's resolution is--1080p or otherwise--so long as what he's playing is fun and feels new. Fresh and unique experiences sell games, not necessarily 1080p resolution, he says in a new interview with Total Xbox.

"It's certainly not something I care about in a game," Hutchinson says, also confirming that Far Cry 4's target resolution is 1080p across Xbox One and PlayStation 4. "It feels weird to me that people are cool about playing a sort of retro pixel game, and yet the resolution somehow matters. It's like: is it fun, is it interesting, is it new, is it fresh, are there interesting questions?"

"It feels weird to me that people are cool about playing a sort of retro pixel game, and yet the resolution somehow matters" -- Alex Hutchinson

Hutchinson went on to say that some people might not even be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 900p in certain circumstances. "I'm just in it for the experience, I'll play a SNES game if it's cool," he said.

He added that creating new gameplay experiences, instead of just boosting graphics, is where he wants to place his focus. "If our thing is 'woo, the same exact thing you had before, at twice the resolution, instead of a new thing'... A new spin or an evolution, I think is much more interesting," he said.

Hutchinson's comments come after Crysis developer Crytek said earlier this month that it's getting increasingly difficult to "wow" people with graphics.

Asked when he thinks gamers will stop caring about a game's visual performance above all else, Hutchinson suggested that, in a way, they already have.

"I think they already have secretly," he said. "Think about how things used to be--it used to be the graphics on the back of a box that sold a game. And even since the Xbox 360 and the PS3, that sort of era, like early 2000, I feel like 99 percent of the time it's gone away."

The topic has resurfaced of late, Hutchinson said, due to the conversation about the relative power of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. "It's [only brought up] because of the disparity, the idea that one version is being held back. I don't think that has sold consoles for a while now, he said.

Overall, Hutchinson said just because 1080p might make headlines frequently, it doesn't mean it's a topic that's actually a meaningful one for a large percentage of gamers.

"It's the same challenge we had all across the business, where five percent of the audience is online commenting, and 95 percent are just buying them or not buying them," he said. "We create these weird echo chambers for those issues, and sometimes I wonder, I don't think this is real."

Far Cry 4 is in development for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. The game launches on November 18 across all platforms, and the PS4 version has a special multiplayer perk. The game's release next month could be followed up with a Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon-style spinoff, too, according to previous comments from Hutchinson.

$80 Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire Bundle Comes With Extra Potions

Nintendo today announced a special Pokemon dual pack that will include copies of upcoming 3DS role-playing games Pokemon Omega Ruby and Pokemon Alpha Sapphire. This bundle launches on November 21, the same date as all copies will be released, and will sell for $79.98.

If you want to buy the dual pack from a physical store, Best Buy is your only option. However, Nintendo will also sell the game through Amazon.

Since Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will sell for $39.99 on their own, why not just buy both games individually? Nintendo is sweetening the deal by including pair of download codes that can be redeemed for 100 potions each with the dual pack. "Starting a new Pokemon game with 100 extra potions is a treat for players who want to be well-stocked for their epic journey through the Hoenn region," Nintendo said.

Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are "reimagined" versions of Ruby and Sapphire, which launches for Game Boy Advance more than ten years ago in 2003. Nintendo stresses that Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are "not just simple remakes."

You can read more about both games in this interview we conducted with The Pokemon Company.

Watch These New WoW: Warlords of Draenor TV Spots

With the release of PC MMO World of Warcraft's fifth expansion--Warlords of Draenor--now just weeks away, Blizzard Entertainment is ramping up its marketing efforts for the game.

The push will include four TV commercials, which will be hitting the airwaves soon, Blizzard says in a post on the game's website. You can see all four TV spots in this post right now.

None of the videos show any gameplay (not uncommon for video game marketing), instead highlighting Orcs waging war. They are impressive, but coming from Blizzard, did you expect any different?

Warlords of Draenor launches November 13. It follows The Burning Crusade (2007), Wrath of the Lich King (2008), Cataclysm (2010), and Mists of Pandaria (2012). Warlords of Draenor introduces new zones and raises the level cap to 100. It also comes with an instant character boost to level 90, which you can unlock right now by pre-purchasing the expansion.

Star Citizen Devs Describe FPS Module, and It Sounds Amazing

The development team that's working on space sim Star Citizen's first-person shooter module did a Reddit Ask Me Anything yesterday where they shared many details about the game.

The team is made up of around 30 people. They're aiming to release the FPS module early next year, and then continue updating it. Its mechanics will be integrated into the game's persistent universe, but like Star Citizen's Arena Commander, you'll also be able to play separate, multiplayer matches in team deathmatch, seek and destroy, capture and hold, and other modes.

The integration of the FPS gameplay with the persistent universe is the most interesting part. Take for example the following description from the team on how you might be able to use it to your advantage:

"I'm a stealthy, solo player. I find a wrecked ship, I know scavengers will be around soon. I find a crate and put myself in it. I let the scavengers take the crate and put me in their ship. When I'm on their ship, some time later, I get out of the crate. Very quietly, I rummage around and find some goodies I like. I steal those... now i can either - A) Jump out the airlock and call a ride or B) go to their engine room and self destruct their ship or C) quietly hunt and execute the entire staff and take their ship.... or Z) they could have scanned the crate properly before loading it, blasted it with their ship and me with it...."

Some other interesting tidbits that came out of the AMA:

  • The team says the FPS gameplay is inspired by "a mixture of Counter-Strike, Rainbow Six, Arma, Delta Force, and Killzone."
  • If an airlock on a ship is breached, items and characters will get sucked out into space.
  • There will be a cover system that allows you to lean, peek, crouch and move in cover. There will be some destruction but it's not a key component (as most of the environments are solid metal).
  • You can damage specific limbs, and this will impact gameplay. The plan is to let players choose the dominant hand for their characters. If that hand is damaged, they won't be able to shoot or throw grenades as well. In the persistent universe, a limb can be "ruined" to the point that you'll have to replace it with an artificial one.

The crowdfunding campaign for Star Citizen is now closing in on $59 million.

For more on the game and Roberts himself, check out part one and part two of GameSpot's interview with the legendary designer.

Duke Nukem Developer Is Back With a 32 Games Anthology Pack

3D Realms, the developer behind Duke Nukem, Shadow Warrior, and Blood, is back, and it's celebrating its return with a 32 games anthology pack.

The developer shut its doors in 2009, but was acquired earlier this year by Danish investment firm SDN, part-owner and principal investor of game studio Interceptor Entertainment, which developed the Rise of the Triad reboot.

In February, Interceptor Entertainment's and 3D Realms' logo appeared on a teaser website for Duke Nukem: Mass Destruction, a top-down action role-playing game for PC and PlayStation, but it was taken down after Gearbox, which owns the rights to the Duke Nukem IP, filed suit.

Now that it's back, 3D Realms says that its first order of business is to launch this 3D Realms Anthology, which you can buy from its website for $40 (though their store seems to be down at the moment). These are the games included in the pack:

  • Arctic Adventure
  • Bio Menace
  • Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold
  • Commander Keen: Goodbye Galaxy
  • Commander Keen: Invasion of the Vorticons
  • Math Rescue
  • Monster Bash
  • Mystic Towers
  • Paganitzu

Halo 2 Remaking the Legend Documentary Gets a Release Date, New Trailer

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Sabtu, 25 Oktober 2014 | 23.26

Remaking the Legend, the documentary about the making of Halo 2: Anniversary, will be free to download via Xbox Video on October 31, Microsoft has announced.

Halo developer 343 Industries said it recorded over 400 hours of footage and 80 interviews with creative partners, Halo fans, pro players, and industry experts for the documentary. It will feature interviews with Halo contributors Bonnie Ross, Frank O'Connor, Dan Ayoub, and Head of Xbox Phil Spencer, as well as members of the original Halo 2 team: writer Joseph Staten, multiplayer designer Max Hoberman, composer Marty O'Donnell, and voice actor Keith David.

"As we got deeper into the project, we realized we couldn't talk about Halo 2's impact on the industry without telling the story of Halo's origins," Director of Programming for 343 Industries Tina Summerford said on Xbox Wire. "It's pretty awesome to hear the original team from Bungie talk about the beginning of this franchise and it's something we think both new and old fans will appreciate."

You can also watch Remaking the Legend on the Halo Channel on November 11, or tune in to the Xbox Twitch channel at the following times:

  • Friday, October 31 at 11 am PST/2 pm EST
  • Saturday, November 1 at 6 pm PST/9 pm EST
  • Sunday, November 2 at 6 pm PST/9 pm EST

Much like Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2: Anniversary, which is included in Halo: The Master Chief Collection, is an updated version of the original Xbox game first released in 2004. The campaign will feature a Classic Mode to instantly switch between the remastered next-gen graphics and original game, updated sound effects, and completely new cut-scenes.

The Master Chief Collection includes remastered versions of Halo 1-4, as well as beta access to 2015's Halo 5: Guardians. It launches for Xbox One on November 11.

Weekly Recap: Huge Titanfall Update, Sunset Overdrive Is 900p, and Jade Raymond Leaves Ubisoft

(Some Of) The Big Stuff:

Ten-year Ubisoft veteran Jade Raymond left the French video game giant this week. She produced the original Assassin's Creed, its sequel, and various entries in the Splinter Cell series. Most recently, she worked on Watch Dogs and was managing director of Ubisoft Toronto. She called the decision to leave Ubisoft "one of the hardest decisions" of her career. No word yet on what she's doing next. Her replacement is Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six veteran Alexandre Parizeau.

Sunset Overdrive creative director Marcus Smith this week explained why the upcoming Xbox One game runs in 900p, not 1080p. He said developer Insomniac Games had the game running at 1080p at one point, but decided to shift to 900p so it could create a level of on-screen mayhem that would make Transformers director Michael Bay proud.

On Wednesday, Respawn Entertainment announced details on Titanfall's biggest ever update. The wide-ranging update includes multiple new game modes, including a co-op, horde-style mode that you can play against AI, and not real-world players. Be sure to read our detailed coverage of the update to get up-to-speed with everything the update introduces. It's available today on Xbox One and PC.

The Other Stuff (Stories We Like, But Didn't Cover With a Standalone Post):

Pornographic website YouPorn is getting into gaming. The site says that after fielding "hundreds" of requests (who knows how many were actually serious) it is close to reaching a sponsorship deal with an eSports team. There are quite a few sex jokes to make here.

Halloween is nearly here, and Disney is celebrating by updating its mobile games with new features and functionality focused around the freaky holiday. Marvel Puzzle Quest got a spooky new character called Blade on October 24, while a new mission is coming to Marvel: Avengers Alliance that sees players fighting off a demonic threat.

Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey says in a wide-ranging and fascinating interview with Smithsonian that when the Oculus Rift consumer version is eventually released, it won't be perfect. But that's OK, because the Ford Model T wasn't either, he says. "This is the Model T," he said about the first edition Oculus Rift. "We want to be where the Tesla is eventually. What we have now is something that's affordable, that's good enough for people, and that will be able to sustain the growth that's needed to get to the Tesla."

Who will win next week's UFC 179 featuring fighters Chad Mendes and Jose Aldo? EA Sports simulated the bout in EA Sports UFC, and Aldo came out on top, finishing off Mendes with ground and pound moves to win his seventh consecutive title. We'll find out if EA was right when the actual fight takes place Saturday, October 25 at the Ginasio do Maracanazinho in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Mass Effect's Commander Shepard has killed more than 300,000 people. That's according to an in-depth analysis done by one super-dedicated fan. Writing on Reddit, user mocha820 reports in extremely detailed depth about how many people Shepard killed in Mass Effect 1-3 and all of the game's DLC. The total bodycount is even broken down by race and faction.

Remember that awesome arcade game Time Crisis? It's coming back! Bandai Namco's classic light gun franchise is returning to arcades in March 2015 in the form of Time Crisis 5. Per a new report from Polygon, the new game will feature left and right foot pedals, which will allow you to flank enemies. The game will be played on 55-inch monitors, and the gun controller lets you to cycle through weapons. The Time Crisis series debuted in 1996, and the most recent release was 2006's Time Crisis 4.

A new report from security solutions company Symantec reveals what you probably already knew: gamers are a top target for DDoS attacks. "Short DDoS attacks against competing players are unfortunately very popular among online gamers," Symantec writes in the full report.

Expansion alert! Boston-based indie studio Disruptor Beam this week announced (and released) the first expansion for mobile and Facebook title Game of Thrones Ascent. It's called The Long Night, and it features a new World Event, new Alliance tactics system, and new quests and items. You can read more about The Long Night in a blog post here.

Think you're good at Tetris? You might be, but you aren't better than Harry Hong. He won the recently concluded Annual Classic Tetris World Championship, which took place in Oregon. Gamers from around the world competed in round after round of 8-bit Tetris on NES. After two days of qualifying rounds, Hong--who hails from Los Angeles--took home the crown. He cleared more lines of Tetriminos (the name of the falling shapes) and scored more points than everyone else. For his victory, he won $1,000 in prize money and a grand prize trophy. Nice work!

There's no NHL 2K game on consoles or PC this year, but now you can play NHL 2K on the go. 2K Sports this week released the game for iOS and Android. You can buy the game, developed in-hour at Visual Concepts, for $8. 2K Sports calls the game a "full-featured professional hockey game" and it includes a My Career mode, live roster updates, asynchronous multiplayer, and classic modes such as NHL Winter Classic and Free Skate. Download it today from iTunes and Google Play.

A group of filmmakers are looking to make a Legend of Zelda parody movie in the vein of Family Guy's Star Wars episode, Blue Harvest. They've turned to Kickstarter to help fund their dreams, asking for $225,000 to make the project a reality. So far, they've raised just over $500. You can read more about the campaign here.

Microsoft announced this week that all 104 Microsoft Stores will celebrate the release of Xbox One game Sunset Overdrive with launch parties kicking off at 10 PM on Monday, October 27. Attend one of the events and you'll get to play the game early, take part in special giveaways, and more. Plus, be one of the first 25 to show up and buy a copy of the game and you'll receive special Sunset Overdrive swag.

A group of Spanish video game developers have launched a Kickstarter campaign for a Christian-themed mobile game called A Journey Towards Jesus for iOS and Android. They're looking for $8,500 to make the project a reality, and have so far received over $3,400 in pledges. "We believe that Christian content available for mobile devices is scarce and sometimes poorly designed," the developers say. "Young people have many ways to spend their free time. Unfortunately there are currently few Apps that serve to evangelize, teach, and entertain them. Our idea: Why not create quality Christian Apps, so that all interested young people can have fun while learning more about the Word of God?"

Time for another Super Meat Boy game? Maybe. Probably not. Who knows. But the studio behind the 2010 game made a tease on Twitter this week, saying: "4 years ago today Super Meat Boy was born. Since then the world has been constantly going down hill. Time for another Meat Boy game I think." I personally would not object. How about you?

Interested in the history of video game development? A pretty neat new interactive graphic from PriceSpy lets you explore the history of famous game developers, including information about where and when they got started, what they created, and lots more. See it here.

A new professional study from Ryerson University suggests that kids eat less after playing video games such as Angry Birds. On average, children consume 50 fewer calories at mealtime compared to when they didn't play video games, the study found. Reading this made me hungry, so I guess I should now go play video games.

The World Series started this week, and it's now been revealed that the Kansas City Royals' love for Supercell's mobile hit Clash of Clans nearly ruined the team's season. The team got so swept up playing the game that they often played in the locker room instead of devoting their energy to improving their real-world baseball game. It all worked out in the end, though, as the Royals are now playing against the San Francisco Giants for a World Championship.

Destiny's Next Iron Banner Discourages Quitting, Makes Levels Matter More

Bungie will launch another Iron Banner event in Destiny by the end of the year that addresses feedback from players, the developer has announced.

Destiny's competitive multiplayer normally balances the gap between higher and lower-level Guardians so they can play together, but the Iron Banner should have been different by taking players' levels into account. However, players quickly noticed that Guardian levels didn't seem to make as much as a difference as Bungie suggested. Bungie later explained that the largest advantage a player could have is around 7 levels.

"In the next Iron Banner, we will debut a much more dramatic difference between players of wide variation in Level," Lead Designer Tyson Green said in the latest Bungie Weekly Update. Green also said that Bungie will detail the changes in an article of its own as soon as it settles on some of the numbers, but added that for the next Iron Banner, a Fireteam leader will need to be Level 20 to enter. Lower Level players may join in with a Level 20 "chaperone," but they will find it very challenging.

Additionally, in order to discourage players from quitting a match if they feel that they're about to lose, in the next Iron Banner players will receive a Medallion of Iron on a loss. The next time they win, those Medallions will convert into a reputation gain almost equal to a win.

The next Iron Banner will also add exclusive, Level 30 reward Armor, easier, more valuable Bounties, and adjustments to the event's reputation system.

For more details about changes to the Iron Banner, head over to Bungie's website.

Watch How PS4's Share Play Feature Works

Sony has released a short video tutorial for Share Play, a new feature that allows you to share your PlayStation 4 games with friends who don't own them.

As you can see in the video, Share Play is accessed through the PS4's party menu. If you're the host, you'll see a new option for Share Play in the party menu, where you can select "Give Controller to Visitor." This will give the guest control of the game for up to an hour. The host will need to be a PlayStation Plus member to use this feature, but not the guest. If the guest is a PlayStation Plus member as well, you can use the Share Play feature to play a multiplayer game together without the guest having to own or download the game.

Share Play, a feature Sony introduced at its Gamescom press conference as a "virtual couch" experience, is being added to PS4s this Tuesday in the v2.00 firmware update dubbed "Masamune." The update also adds YouTube sharing, themes, and a USB music player that effectively enables custom soundtracks.

You can find out more about what's included in the "Masamune" update right here.

Alien: Isolation Getting Three New Maps, Another Playable Character Next Week

Sega announced today that the first of five Alien: Isolation post-release expansions, Corporate Lockdown, will be released on October 28. It features three "challenging and terrifying" maps for Isolation's Survivor Mode, and will sell for $8. It's included with the $30 Isolation DLC pass.

The three new maps included with Corporate Lockdown are Severance, Scorched Earth, and Loose Ends. The expansion also marks the arrival of Gauntlet Mode, a new mode that challenges players to complete all three maps back-to-back without dying once.

A new playable character, Seegson Executive Ransome, is also featured in Corporate Lockdown.

The next four Isolation DLC packs are called Trauma, Safe Haven, Lost Contact, and The Trigger. Each features a new playable character, as well as new maps and modes. Specific release dates for those expansions were not announced, but Sega says all should arrive by March 2015.

PlayStation Experience Event Is "Unprecedented," Sony Claims

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 20 Oktober 2014 | 23.26

Sony's upcoming PlayStation Experience event--a two-day community-focused gathering in Las Vegas meant to celebrate all things PlayStation--is going be like nothing you've ever seen. That's according to PlayStation boss Scott Rohde, who labeled the event "unprecedented," and even teased that it will include some special announcements or reveals.

"This event that we're gonna hold; this is pretty unprecedented," Rohde said during the latest PlayStation Blogcast. "This is an event for the fans, and I am so incredibly geeked about it. We're gonna show you a bunch of stuff that maybe we shouldn't show you yet."

Overall, Rohde said PlayStation Experience aims to be a "celebration of the [PlayStation 4] and all the fans that made it as great as it is today."

Sony announced PlayStation Experience earlier this month. Attendees will get to sit in on panels, meet developers, and go hands-on with upcoming PlayStation games. They'll also have a chance to get free swag and buy rare collectibles directly from game studios.

The show will also feature an "exclusive first look" at PlayStation's 2015 software slate, which includes games such as Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and Bloodborne, among others.

The event will be held December 6 and 7 in Las Vegas at a "huge" venue. One-day passes will sell for $50, while two-day tickets will go for $90. More details regarding the show are expected to be announced today, October 20.

Watch: The Simpsons Take On Pokemon, South Park, Adventure Time

Last night's Treehouse of Horror episode of The Simpsons, the show's annual Halloween-themed program that tends to scale up absurdity to crazy levels, certainly kept with that trend this year.

This year's episode ended with Lisa saying, "I just had a worrisome thought: If there can be two incarnations of The Simpsons, why couldn't some evil marketing entity produce millions of others?!"

Lisa's fears are realized, and we are presented with versions of The Simpsons family inspired by all manner of animated shows and pop culture references. Some of the ones I quickly spotted were Pokemon, Adventure Time, Despicable Me, LEGO, South Park, and Archer.

How many references did you catch? List them off in the comments below!

Watch New Dragon Age: Inquisition "Skyhold" Footage Later Today

Dragon Age: Inquisition developer BioWare will host a Twitch live stream today starting at 10 AM Pacific / 1 PM Eastern / 6pm UK where it will show off Skyhold, a castle that will serve as your base of operations in the upcoming role-playing game.

The live stream today promises to give viewers a "deeper" look at Skyhold. BioWare also plans to answer fan questions during the presentation, according to producer Cameron Lee. You'll be able to watch the entire presentation right here in this post through the video above.

Inquisition launches November 18 for PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. BioWare recently confirmed that the game will run at 1080p on PS4 and 900p on Xbox One. Inquisition was originally targeted to launch a full year ago, but has since been delayed twice.

Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell Producer Jade Raymond Leaves Ubisoft

Jade Raymond

Veteran Ubisoft producer Jade Raymond--who worked on franchises such as Assassin's Creed, Watch Dogs, and Splinter Cell--has left the French publisher after ten years, it was announced today. Most recently, she served as managing director of Ubisoft Toronto.

"Today, Ubisoft announced that after 10 years of collaboration, the company and Jade Raymond have agreed to pursue future opportunities separately," Ubisoft said in a statement.

Raymond will be replaced by Alexandre Parizeau, a founding member of Ubisoft Toronto, as managing director of the studio.

Alexandre Parizeau

"I've spent 10 extraordinary years at Ubisoft, and I am proud to have been part of many of the best teams in the industry making truly remarkable games," Raymond said. "This is one of the hardest decisions of my career, but the Toronto studio is strong and on a solid path. I'm confident that now is a good time for me to transition leadership of the studio to Alex and to pursue my other ambitions and new opportunities.

"Stay tuned for more on what's next for me, but for now, I'd like to thank Ubisoft for its partnership through the years, and I wish them the very best in all their next endeavors," she added.

Raymond served as producer on the original Assassin's Creed, and worked as an executive producer on Assassin's Creed II. Other credits include Watch Dogs and Splinter Cell: Blacklist. She has served as Ubisoft Toronto's managing director since 2009.

Raymond will officially depart Ubisoft Toronto on October 29, at which time Parizeau will become managing director. Parizeau is a 15-year veteran of the video game industry, and served as senior producer on Splinter Cell: Blacklist and producer on Splinter Cell Conviction and Rainbow Six Vegas.

Parizeau will report directly to Ubisoft Montreal and Toronto CEO Yannis Mallat.

"On behalf of Ubisoft, I'd like to thank Jade for her leadership and many contributions over the years, and wish her all the best in her next adventures," Mallat said. "The Toronto studio is a key part of the Ubisoft global network, and Alex has been at the heart of the studio's growth over the years. He was the obvious choice to lead this talented group of people as they continue to develop amazing games."

Watch Destiny's Hardest Boss Taken Down in 17 Seconds

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Sabtu, 18 Oktober 2014 | 23.25

Destiny's Vault of Glass Raid on hard mode and its final boss, Atheon, are probably the most challenging things you can do in the game right now, but you wouldn't know it just by watching the video above.

YouTube user Bludrunk uploaded the video, which shows a team of Guardians taking Atheon down in just 17 seconds, though this ignores the time it takes to reach the boss and the phase in which he's vulnerable. The video description attributes the feat to a clan called Legendary Crew. Their group was made up of three Sunsinger Warlocks and three Gunslinger Hunters. Five were level 30, one was 29. Four out of six used the Gjallarhorn exotic rocket launcher, which, as you can clearly see, adds up to an insane amount of damage.

To get an idea of just how hard Atheon is, watch part four of GameSpot's Vault of Glass Raid guide below, or check out an unedited video of our friends over at Giant Bomb taking Atheon on for the first time. It only took them a couple of hours.

Yesterday, Bungie announced it will introduce some bug fixes for this encounter. Knocking any boss off of a ledge in their arena is considered a bug, and for the Atheon encounter, it's adding "baby bumpers to areas where players could knock Atheon out of the environment." It also said that a "change will take effect next week which fixes a bug with Atheon's target selection. When using its Timestream ability, Atheon will select 3 players at random, instead of choosing the three players furthest from it."

Weekly Recap: PS4 Beats Xbox One and Mass-Murdering Game Revealed

(Some Of) The Big Stuff:

The NPD Group released video game sales data for September on Thursday, and Sony's PlayStation 4 beat the Xbox One yet again in the United States. PS4 sales in September jumped significantly over August, due in part to the huge success of the Destiny PS4 bundle, which featured a copy of Bungie's new shooter and a slick-looking white system and matching DualShock 4 controller for $400. For lots more on September NPD data, be sure to read GameSpot's full report here.

A major union representing flight attendants has sued the Federal Aviation Administration, asking for the government agency to reinstate its electronics ban for takeoffs and landings. Put another way, flight attendants want games banned during some phases of flight again. Their reasoning? Small electronics like PlayStation Vitas can become projectiles during turbulence, and can also distract passengers from listening to important safety instructions.

Feminist Frequency creator Anita Sarkeesian canceled an appearance this week at a Utah college after the school received emails that threatened the "deadliest school shooting in American history" if Sarkessian were to go on stage. The event was scheduled to go on as planned with beefed up security, but Sarkessian dropped out after saying she was concerned about the fact that state law allows people in Utah--and on college campuses--to carry concealed weapons. The school, Utah State University, has since said that "at no time was there any immediate threat," though it will continue its investigation.

Polish developer Destructive Creations released the first gameplay trailer for its mass-murdering shooter, Hatred, this week. It is beyond brutal, never shying away from the fact that this is a game about killing people. Think it's just a joke? Apparently, it's not, as the developers say they are serious about releasing the game, though it remains to be seen if Steam and GOG would accept it.

The Other Stuff (Stories We Like, But Didn't Cover With a Standalone Post):

Ever wonder how Swedish metal band In Flames warms up for a show? They play video games, of course, as you can see in this video the group posted to their website this week.

If you're looking to play Tetris Ultimate on your 3DS, you now have a date to circle on your calendar. Ubisoft announced this week that the is coming to Nintendo's popular portable on November 11. Buy it at retail for $30 or through the eShop for $20. The game is also coming to PS4, Xbox One, PS Vita, and PC, though a release date for those versions hasn't been announced.

American metal band Avenged Sevenfold made a video game and you can play it today. What a fun sentence that was to write. Hail to the King: Deathbat is the title of the game, and you can download it today from iTunes and Google Play for $5. The game has been in development for more than two years, Avenged Sevenfold singer--and dedicated gamer--M. Shadows said.

Continuing the theme of music ... Microsoft this week released some tracks from the re-recorded Halo 2: Anniversary soundtrack, which you'll hear in November's Xbox One game, Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Microsoft worked with the San Francisco symphony, a 40-person operate, and a 28-person boys choir to create the tunes. What's more, when The Master Chief Collection is released, you can switch between the old and new versions of the songs with a single button press, just like you can with graphics. Sweet! Listen to some of tracks on SoundCloud here.

Even more music news! EA Sports this week announced the full soundtrack for its upcoming professional basketball game, NBA Live 15. It's a pretty excellent mix of tracks, including tunes from Phantogram, Flatbush Zombies, and Jeezy, among many others. You can see the full tracklist on EA Sports' website here.

Following its release for iOS devices, free-to-play simulator game RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile is now available on Android. The Android version features everything from the iOS version, including new park attractions, social features, and recent updates to the game. Download it from Google Play here.

Curious about Fantasia: Music Evolved, the trippy Xbox 360 and Xbox One music game from Rock Band creator Harmonix? You can download a demo for the game today on both platforms ahead of the full game's release on October 21. More details about how you can download the demo are available at Microsoft's blog.

Tekken publisher Bandai Namco announced a new free-to-play PC game called Battleline: Steel Warfare on Monday. The game aims to separate itself from the pack with what it calls "meta-gameplay." You can read more about the game, and sign up for a closed beta that begins next month, today through its website.

Were you looking for a RuneScape collectible card game in the vein of Hearthstone? Because that exactly what you're getting. Chronicle: RuneScape Legends (working title!) is launching in 2015 for PC/Mac, as well as tablet and other mobile platforms. The game plays out "within the pages of a living book" and is all about quest-building and forging your own story, publisher Jagex says.

Don't expect Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson to release another game. The video game legend who stands to make as much as $1.75 billion from selling Mojang to Microsoft says on Twitter that while he still does programming, "I have no idea if I'll release anything."

Hand of Fate, a Kickstarter-funded game from Defiant Development is coming to Xbox One. The developer announced this week that the rogue-like RPG will be released for Microsoft's new console, alongside the previously confirmed PC and PlayStation 4. The game is available today on PC through Steam Early Access, and if you buy the game here, you can play side missions made by former Battlefield and Payday developer David Goldfarb.

Would you have played a motion-based Saints Row brawler? That's the idea for a game called Saints Row: The Cooler that was reportedly in the works for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Heavy Iron Studios was supposedly working on the game for the now-defunct THQ. "It was a brawler game. Go to a bar, pick a fight, smash a bottle over someone's head," a developer who reportedly worked on the game told Unseen64.

Amazon Game Studios, the video game arm of the mega online retailer, this week announced three new games that it's working on. They are Til Morning's Light, Tales From Deep Space, and CreepStorm. Amazon describes each as "creative" and "hand-crafted" games that are "fun to play." You can read more about these titles at Amazon Game Studios' website: http://games.amazon.com

A Kickstarter campaign is seeking $500,000 to make a video game that teaches kids to do good. You can read more about the campaign and what it's all about here. Currently, funding stands at just over $28,000. The drive ends on November 4.

2014 is nearly over, so it's time to start thinking about 2015. Organizers this week announced the first four speakers for February's DICE Summit in Las Vegas. They are: Tracy Fullerton (experimental game designer, chair of the Interactive Media & Games Division at USC); Tom Kalinske (executive chairman and co-founder of Global Education Learning; former CEO of Sega and co-CEO of Mattel); Sean Murray (co-founder and managing director at No Man's Sky studio Hello Games); and Ru Weerasuriya (founder and CEO of The Order: 1886 studio Ready At Dawn). The 2015 DICE Summit runs February 3-5.

Upcoming Destiny Update Will Include Bug Fixes for Atheon Raid Boss

In a recent update posted to Bungie.net, the developers discuss fixes coming to the Vault of Glass Raid, the why behind the recent changes to auto-rifles, and changes in store for the Vex Mythoclast.

Regarding the auto-rifle 2% nerf, the blog notes, "Soon after the launch of Destiny, I knew that Auto Rifles were due for a retool. In a pre-game lobby for an evening of clan warfare, a seasoned killer welcomed a newcomer to the arena with some sage advice: 'We're headed into the Crucible. You're gonna want an Auto Rifle.'"

The developers are also going to continue tweaking the Vex Mythlocast, which is one of the potential rewards for beating Atheon on Hard in the Vault of Glass raid. "Our nerf was intended to target PVP play -- where we felt and heard that Mythoclast was over-performing -- but it also reduced its effectiveness in PVE. Our PVE nerf was stronger than we intended and we are going to fix Mythoclast in PVE," writes one of the game's developers.

As a fix, the Mythoclast's attack value will be raised "above and beyond the other exotics," but they will continue to find a value for the weapon's base damage "that works for both PVP and PVE."

While there's no exact timeline for the Mythoclast's changes, next week's Hotfix is going to introduce some bug fixes for the Atheon boss encounter in Vault of Glass. Knocking any boss off of a ledge in their arena is considered a bug, and for the Atheon encounter, the devs are adding "baby bumpers to areas where players could knock Atheon out of the environment."

In addition, "A change will take effect next week which fixes a bug with Atheon's target selection. When using its Timestream ability, Atheon will select 3 players at random, instead of choosing the three players furthest from it."

These, of course, won't be the final round of changes. As the developer notes: "Destiny is a game that we're excited to support for a long time, so this will happen again. Fight like hell out there, but try not to get too stuck in your ways." What do you think about the upcoming changes? Let us know in the comments below.

HBO Go on Xbox One Images Leak

HBO Go, the app that gives users on demand access to the premium cable channel's movies and shows like Game of Thrones, might be coming to Xbox One soon.

According to WP Central, a user on the r/xboxone sub-Reddit linked to a Microsoft OneDrive account that contained pictures of the app running on Xbox One, which the user said is currently in testing. The images of the app have since been removed.

In June, Microsoft announced that more than 45 new entertainment apps are coming to Xbox One and Xbox 360 around the world by the end of the year, including HBO Go (which is already out on the Xbox 360). Some of these include Vine, ShowTime Anytime, Comedy Central, Major League Gaming, and new embedded Twitter functionality. Once these apps arrive, Microsoft's app catalog will increase by 25 percent to more than 225 apps in total. There are around 180 apps available now, Microsoft said on the Xbox Wire.

At the moment, you need to pay for a pricey subscription to a cable or satellite TV service in order to use HBO Go, but earlier this week, HBO CEO Richard Plepler also made the surprising announcement that HBO will launch as a stand-alone service in the United States next year.

Smash Bros. Wii U Features Stage Creator and Board Game Mode, Listing Claims

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 17 Oktober 2014 | 23.26

Just like 2008's Super Smash Bros. Brawl for Wii, November's Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will allow players to create their own stages. That's according to a list of game features from its Amazon product page, which also reveals the title will have a "board game" mode.

Here's the Amazon description (with emphasis added):

"Whether you're creating stages on the GamePad, competing in challenges crafted by Master Hand and Crazy Hand, or outwitting your opponents in a brand new board game mode, there's no doubt that the ultimate Smash Bros. game has arrived."

We have reached out to Nintendo for comment, and will update this post with anything we hear back.

This leak comes just days after Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai teased that the game is getting two new single-player modes.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U launches November 21 in North America and December 5 in Europe. The console version follows the 3DS iteration, which has already sold over 2.8 million copies worldwide.

Naughty Dog Has "Really Cool Ideas" for Uncharted 4

Sony-owned Developer Naughty Dog has some "really, really cool ideas" for Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, according to co-director Bruce Straley. As part of a wide-ranging interview with GameCrate about Naughty Dog's 30th anniversary, Straley said he's "really, really excited" about the direction the studio is taking for the upcoming PlayStation 4 action-adventure game.

"We're still trying to figure it out and yet I have faith in the team, I have faith in where we're going with it," Straley said. "I can say we have some really, really, cool ideas that I'm really excited to… sometime show you. That's all I can say but it's going to be awesome. I'm excited so you should be excited. Naughty Dog has a track record and just trust us, it's going to be cool."

Unfortunately--but not unexpectedly--Straley did not share any specific details regarding what the "really cool ideas" for Uncharted 4 are. The game launches in 2015, but fans might get a glimpse at it during the PlayStation Experience event in December, where the company is expected to discuss its 2015 slate.

Earlier this month, Naughty Dog teased that it would have Uncharted 4 news to share "really soon," but we haven't heard anything yet.

Uncharted 4 was announced back in December 2013. Naughty Dog has released a pair of teaser trailers for the title (as well as some concept art and a close-up of Nathan Drake), but we have not seen any gameplay footage yet. The game is expected to launch next year running at 1080p/60fps, and it could be accompanied by Uncharted remasters for PS4.

What would you like to see in terms of new features/functionality for Uncharted 4? Let us know in the comments below!

GOG Responds to Controversial Ultraviolent Killing Game, "Hatred"

Hatred, an upcoming PC game that lets you play the role of a mass murderer, has caused quite a stir since its beyond brutal gameplay trailer was released this week. Following the trailer's debut, the studio told GameSpot that it would like to launch the game through Steam and GOG, but it remains to be seen if either digital distribution platform would approve the game.

While Valve has not responded to comment about the possibility of a Hatred release on Steam, a representative for GOG told GameSpot Friday that it has yet to speak with Hatred developer Destructive Creations about a publishing deal.

"Currently we are not in touch with developers of Hatred," a representative for GOG told GameSpot. "You know about our 'boutique approach' so in any case, before deciding on a release, we would review the game and give our feedback to the devs."

Destructive Creations would like to launch Hatred on Steam and GOG, but the studio isn't sure either company will allow it.

"We really wish to release [a] digital version through Steam and GOG, but actually we have no idea if they will let us to do this, because of all the sh**storm the game is delivering," Destructive Creations' Jarosław Zieliński told GameSpot.

Hatred does not shy away from the fact that it is principally a game about killing people--from unsuspecting civilians to law enforcement officials. In announcing the game, Destructive Creations made it clear that you shouldn't take the game too seriously because "it's just a game."

"These days, when a lot of games are heading to be polite, colorful, politically correct, and trying to be some kind of higher art, rather than just an entertainment--we wanted to create something against trends," the studio said about Hatred.

Hatred runs on Unreal Engine 4, the same technology that powers games such as Fable Legends and Kingdom Hearts III. Unreal Engine owner Epic Games told GameSpot that it is not involved in the development of Hatred (beyond the fact that the game uses its engine), and that it never tries to exert "creative control" or censorship over projects that use its technology.

However, the Hatred gameplay trailer used the Unreal Engine 4 logo without permission, and Epic Games wants it removed from the video and other marketing materials.

Watch 10 Epic Minutes of Far Cry 4 Co-Op Gameplay

PlayStation Access has posted a ten-minute gameplay video for Ubisoft's upcoming open-world action game, Far Cry 4, showing off the game's co-op mode on PlayStation 4.

2012's Far Cry 3 had a co-op mode, but it was quite limited compared to Far Cry 4's, which gives you access to the entire game world, instead of smaller sub-sections.

The video shows off all manner of game mechanics, including swimming, shooting, driving, flying, and elephant-riding. Pachyderms are quite useful when capturing an outpost, after all.

Far Cry 4 will support co-op on all platforms, but PlayStation players are getting a special perk. PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 Far Cry 4 players with PlayStation Plus subscriptions will receive ten invitations they can send to friends who don't have a copy of the game. These gamers can then play a free trial version of Far Cry 4's co-op mode, though there are some limitations.

For more on Far Cry 4, which launches November 18 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, and PC, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Lords of the Fallen is More Than a Dark Souls Clone

At first glance, City Interactive Games' Lords of the Fallen bears striking similarity to From Software's Dark Souls. The game's near-identical interface, as well as a particular flow to its combat will be familiar to any Souls veteran. But is it more than just a Dark Souls clone? Is the Souls formula ripe for new takes that change how dark and punishing it can be? I huddled by a bonfire with executive producer Tomasz Gop to find out.

A LIGHT AT THE END

Dark Souls does not shy away from imbuing its setting with a suffocating sense of gloom and doom. This context stays in lockstep with the punishing combat and hostile environments. Though Gop describes Lords of the Fallen's fantasy world as being similarly dark, he adds "...It's not as bound to be doomed as in Souls. We were not after that degree of dark."

This also means you'll encounter fewer surprise deaths in Lords of the Fallen, such as falling off high ledges, or being ambushed by hidden enemies. "Environmental deaths in Dark Souls aren't cheap," Gop elaborates. "But most of them would feel cheap in Lords because of the way we've designed the game. There are places where players will have a chance (here: high probability) of falling to their doom, but not only will they not be frequent, but also they'll mostly be found in optional areas."

MAGIC MOMENTS

Dark Souls allows players to build classes who wield magic as their primary means of dealing with a threat. Lords of the Fallen takes a different approach by turning magic into what Gop calls a "smartbomb" that any class can use. It's a highly powerful, limited use spell that can be deployed to make a particularly demanding fight more survivable. "It will never be an 'I win' button but it can buy some breathing space." Gop adds.

MAN AT ARMS

For class builds that do not rely as strongly on magic, Dark Souls places great importance on learning its wide variety of weapon types. Though Lords of the Fallen relegates magic use to dire situations, the game still contains a diverse arsenal of melee implements.

"We have 11 weapon classes, from great swords and heavy hammers to staves and daggers," says Gop. "Each class has its own full set of attacks and animations, all based on motion capture sessions. A twirling staff is good for keeping two or three opponents at a distance and hitting them all at once while two fist weapons are a lethal combo for single-target hit and run tactics. Each weapon's attack speed and damage depends on character attributes and of course there's their range to consider. With three types of shields and the magical gauntlet with interchangeable runes, it all adds up to an impressive number of tactical combinations."

It's not as bound to be doomed as in Souls. We were not after that degree of dark.

You'll still need the required attributes to wield a particular weapon, but unlike Dark Souls, Lords of the Fallen won't require you to pay attention to the physical space available to you when striking; it won't bounce off a wall if swung in an enclosed area. "We just think it's challenging enough to hit your opponent without that extra bit of realism," Gop explains.

SO YOU'RE GOING TO DIE

Death comes with significant consequence in Dark Souls, including the loss of resources that can be used to purchase weapons and stat boosts if you don't make it back to your corpse before a subsequent demise. Bonfires act as both save points and safe harbour, where those resources can be spent to take the pressure away from carrying them through the next hostile area.

Lords of the Fallen uses a similar save point system, but contains a few minor differences regarding how experience points (the equivalent of the souls resource) tie into making death significant. "The ghost of your experience that lingers around the place you were last defeated will start gradually vanishing with time, so you don't have forever to reclaim it," Gop explains.

You can "bank" these experience points at any save point, but it's optional. "When you keep killing enemies without banking your experience at savepoints or dying, each next kill increases your "killstreak" multiplier, so there's something for those really challenge-thirsty too," says Gop. "But keep in mind, the game was primarily balanced for people who play 'by-the-book', using the savepoints."

Those save points will be "relatively frequent, and never too far from boss fights," according to Gop, while a relatively rare consumable item will allow you to reclaim dropped experience after death.

WE'RE NOT IN THIS TOGETHER

Asynchronous connectivity in the form of messages left by other players created a sense of a communal struggle in Dark Souls, while its invasion system provided additional challenges in the form of direct player versus player combat. Lords of the Fallen, quite simply, won't feature any multiplayer features such as these. "We had some very interesting ideas but we're a relatively small team so we had to prioritize singleplayer," Gop explains.

DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES

Ambiguity is the best way to describe Dark Souls' storytelling methods. Though a consistent narrative does underpin your exploration of its dark world, that story must be pieced together through environmental features, item descriptions, and by deciphering cryptic character dialogue. Even then, some pieces remain a mystery, which leads to much speculation and communal lore deduction amongst hardcore fans.

Gop says the approach taken to Lords of the Fallen's own storytelling leaves less to interpretation. "To those who are interested in putting the whole story together, it needs to be clear," he says. "There's a lot of optional exploration involved in order to find all the audio notes, quests and sights but once you put in that effort, you'll know the whole story."

Shoot a Real Teddy Bear Grenade Launcher on Sunset Overdrive's Website

Microsoft and Insomniac Games today launched a website where you can virtually fire some of the over-the-top guns featured in this month's Xbox One title, Sunset Overdrive.

The site is called Walter's Workshop. It lets you select a real-life version of one of Sunset Overdrive weapons, choose a target, fire the crazy gun (see a list of options below), and then watch a pre-recorded explosion from the comfort of your own home. The site also lets you see every inch of the weapons you're firing using a 360-degree panorama camera. Slow-motion options are also available.

Among the weapons you can fire in Walter's Workshop are:

  • A grenade launcher that shoots Teddy bears strapped with dynamite
  • A handgun called Roman Candle that shoots fireworks from a hacksaw

You can see these weapons and more in action in the exclusive, behind-the-scenes video embedded at the top of this post.

Sunset Overdrive launches exclusively for Xbox One on October 28. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Halo: Spartan Strike Announced, Doesn't Feature Microtransactions

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 15 Oktober 2014 | 23.26

Microsoft today announced Halo: Spartan Strike, a spiritual successor to 2013's Halo: Spartan Assault. Like the original, Spartan Strike is a top-down, twin-stick shooter.

The $6 game launches December 14 for Windows platforms (desktop, Surface, and Windows Phone) and one purchase gets you access to the game across all Windows systems. The game is also coming to Steam. What's more, unlike Spartan Assault, the new game does not feature any microtransactions. Everything in-game can be purchase via credits you unlock through gameplay.

Concerning story, Spartan Strike is set during the events of Halo 2, though that's the extent of the information provided in the game's announcement today on IGN.

Spartan Strike will feature achievements, rewards for Xbox One game Halo: The Master Chief Collection, weekly challenges, and leaderboards. Spartan Assault eventually came to Xbox 360 and Xbox One, but it is unclear if Spartan Strike will do the same.

Halo series developer 343 Industries is currently working on Spartan Strike. The studio is also behind upcoming games such as Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Halo 5: Guardians.

Ubisoft: We Thought About Making Far Cry 3.5

Prior to landing on the idea for Far Cry 4, Ubisoft designers considered a more "traditional" sequel to 2012's Far Cry 3, something that would have amounted to what producer Dan Hay calls Far Cry 3.5. This game would have expanded on Far Cry 3's story and locations, but Ubisoft needed less than a week to decide that this was not the right path to go down.

"We definitely had the option of making a 3.5, of making a choice to just stay in the same location with the same characters," Hay said in a post on the UbiBlog. "We talked about the idea of taking Jason's story and growing it, maybe figuring out a way to bring Vaas back. And very quickly we realized that it wasn't going to be a thing that we wanted to do. So we stopped that conversation and said, that's the end of the 3.5 conversation--which lasted probably about four days."

What separates Far Cry 4 from Far Cry 3, outside of its new story and setting, is its "we want it all" design, Hay says. This deliberate approach has resulted in a number of franchise-firsts, like the ability to ride elephants and fly.

"We like the fact that we're a little bit Wild West," Hay said. "We like the fact that somebody's going to be able to kick out an idea that people will think is way too much. And then somebody else goes, 'Maybe that's why you should do it. Maybe that's what makes sense.'"

Far Cry 4 launches on November 18 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. Ubisoft recently announced that it's targeting 1080p resolution for the Xbox One and PS4 versions of the game, though final figures have not yet been revealed. PS4 Could Get Ex-BioShock, Halo Dev's Survival Game

Now that The Flame in the Flood has reached its $150,000 Kickstarter funding goal, developer The Molasses Flood has announced some of the game's stretch goals, one of which is a PlayStation 4 version of the survival game. If funding reaches $300,000, the studio will bring the game to PS4, delivering this version sometime after the PC release in 2015.

The Molasses Flood, a Cambridge, Mass-based studio made up of former BioShock and Halo developers, did not announce plans to bring The Flame in the Flood to Xbox One or Wii U. However, the studio teased it has "more stretch goals in mind" if funding hits $350,000.

Currently, funding for The Flame in the Flood stands at $155,000. Other stretch goals include German, French, and Spanish localization ($175,000); raft customization ($200,000); Russian, Portuguese, and Polish localization ($225,000); and an Endless Mode ($250,000).

In The Flame in the Flood, which runs on the Unreal Engine 4, you'll travel by foot and by raft down a procedurally generated river in areas inspired real-life places like the Everglades, the Louisiana Bayou, and the Mississippi Delta. In order to stay alive (the game features permadeath), you'll need to seek out resources, craft tools, escape dangerous wildlife, and stay ahead of downpours of rain. "Your journey has an end. Will you survive long enough to reach it?" reads a line from the game's description.

The game also features original music from singer-songwriter Chuck Ragan. You can read more about The Flame in the Flood at its Kickstarter page and through our previous coverage.

Another Boston-based studio, Day For Night Games, is currently seeking funds for its upcoming PCgame, The Black Glove. Funding currently stands at close to $91,000 of its $550,000 target.

CoD: Advanced Warfare Dev Says "You've Never Played Call of Duty This Way Before"

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare represents such a major step forward for the brand that one of its key developers even says, "You've never played Call of Duty this way before." That quote comes from Sledgehammer Games co-founder Michael Condrey, who said during a recent Best Buy Google Hangout that having three years to develop Advanced Warfare meant the studio had more time than ever before for experimentation.

"I think that was really what that extra year gave us, the chance to break a few things," he said. "To maybe alienate a few ideas to bring Sledgehammer's take to Call of Duty. And maybe push boundaries further than people were comfortable and then pull it back if we went too far."

One of the marquee features of Advanced Warfare is the exosuit, which gives players a range of super-abilities that expand their range of motion in ways never before seen in the Call of Duty franchise. Though Advanced Warfare does push things forward with the exosuit, it will also still feel like Call of Duty at the end of the day, Condrey assured fans.

"It feels like Call of Duty and everything about that gun-on-gun action that you know and love; and high production values of campaign," he said. "But, you've never played Call of Duty this way before."

Advanced Warfare is the first Call of Duty game developed on Activision's new, three-year cycle for the juggernaut franchise. In announcing the new schedule earlier this year, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said this move will allow developers to have extra time to not only create new features to help push the brand forward, but also so they can spend more time polishing each game.

Advanced Warfare launches November 4 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. Preorders for the game, however, unlock on November 3 through the Day Zero Edition. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.
