Not because the side-scrolling puzzle-platformer is particularly difficult--though it has its fair share of punishing late-game levels--but because its minion-like protagonists regularly fall victim to environmental traps of the spinning blade, spiked stick, and fire-spewing variety.

The game's heroes--tiny brave knights--continually meet their maker, sacrificing themselves so their sword-wielding cohorts can capture the sparkling chalice illuminating each level's end point. Of course, many games, from Pikmin to Patapon, put you in command of lemming-like characters that are prepared to gasp their last breath for the greater good. Life Goes On, however, pushes the concept of "taking one for the team" to new levels, not just encouraging you to accept collateral damage, but requiring you to cause these casualties to complete its challenges.

Spinning saw blades and flamethrowers--what could possibly go wrong?

Seconds after you fire up the game, your first knight is impaled on a bed of spikes; his fresh corpse is then immediately used like a makeshift stepping stone for a newly spawned hero. The self-sacrifice is jarring at first, because willfully throwing yourself onto a sharpened stake goes against the self-preservation skills we've been mastering since those pesky Space Invaders first blew up our blocky ship. But suicide soon becomes second nature when you discover that the quickest path to success is paved with many a dead guy and gal.

Life Goes On's early puzzles ease you in, maybe tasking you with jumping into a spinning saw blade before lifelessly falling onto a pressure plate that provides safe passage for your next knight. Things get clever quickly though, and you're soon stacking corpses like cordwood to coordinate and manage a variety of elements and factors that keep each level's Holy Grail-like prize out of reach. In addition to the aforementioned obstacles and traps, the little human sacrifices encounter swinging pendulums, seesaws, ramps, conveyor belts, lava lakes, and little monsters that fall into a deep slumber upon popping knights in their maws like peanuts. In addition, morbid fun is delivered via cannons that must be carefully aimed before firing their flesh-and-bone bullets into a grisly death trap.

Getting a little help from his friends.

While intentionally mutilating the clueless minions is great fun, solving Life Goes On's devious stages isn't as simple as just unceremoniously impaling, freezing, and incinerating these knights in shining fodder, er, armor. An especially clever touch is the inclusion of checkpoint-like spawn points; once reached, these glowing blue orbs become your next place to manufacture new knights. Things get tricky, however, when puzzles force you to reactivate previously used spawn points, or conversely, to avoid them altogether for fear of triggering them. Thankfully, Life Goes On gives you full control over your character, so you're never trying to corral an auto-walking avatar like in similar games.

On top of crushing the long-established convention that checkpoints equal permanent progress, the game tracks your time and the number of knights killed after each stage. Mercifully, Life Goes On doesn't put a limit on either, but both provide a nice bar for high-score chasers and achievement hunters to measure themselves against.

Many, many, many men will die to get that gold chalice.

A handful of levels are more frustrating than fun, and a few puzzle elements are recycled more than you'd want, but Life Goes On mostly keeps the challenge balanced and the progress well paced. New brain-benders--and fresh ways to solve them--are introduced frequently, but on a gradual learning curve, while the controls, which require just two simple inputs, are super responsive; even performing precision jumps, the bane of many a platformer, is effortless.

Things get tricky, however, when puzzles force you to reactivate previously used spawn points or task you with avoiding them altogether for fear of triggering them.

The game's greatest asset, though, is its sadistic sense of humor. Sporting a pretty presentation--complete with slick lighting, shadowing, and particle trickery--and packed with personality, the macabre concept comes off more charming than disturbing. Each knight has a name--such as the Cautious Maiden Pauline Cromwell--which is unceremoniously crossed off a scroll when he or she dies. And each carries a sword despite, apparently, having no idea what to do with it. Other whimsical touches include the single surviving knight pushing all his dead brothers and sisters in a wagon after each stage, as well as messages like "Pattern Recognition Precludes Victory" and "Messiest Victory Since Lemmings" accompanying your end-stage stats.

If you're violently allergic to puzzle games, Life Goes On won't miraculously cure you. But as long as you're open to the idea of having your mind engaged more than your trigger finger, this melon-twister's wicked personality alone might be enough to pull you into its death grip.
Thu, 17 Apr 2014 15:57:00 -0700 http://www.gamespot.com/reviews/life-goes-on-review/1900-6415735/ http://www.gamespot.com/articles/pc-and-xbox-one-exclusive-titanfall-is-the-top-selling-us-game-for-march/1100-6419066/

NPD released their monthly US sales report today, and the Xbox One/PC exclusive Titanfall has come out on top.

According to an NPD press release, "Titanfall was the top-selling game for March 2014, with a solid attach rate to the Xbox One. With a number of huge games released and a price drop from the Xbox One, we're anxiously awaiting the results of this heated month. Do we have any inside information? Nope, so don't run to your bookie to gamble your life saving's on our guesses. But we do have theories on how the retail wars played out.

Justin Haywald - A new challenge has arrived

Last month I wrote about how the PlayStation 4 has a strong advantage in the current console race. They've had the price advantage, PlayStation Plus is a better value than Xbox Live Gold, and Sony's console is already out in Japan (where they've historically always outsold Microsoft). I'm not backing down from that opinion, but that doesn't mean Sony's going to win every month, and I think March is going to belong to the Xbox One.

Sure, it's not official, but the Xbox One is essentially $100 cheaper than when it launched and it comes with a free game. And not just any game, but the AAA blockbuster Titanfall. Factoring that in, Microsoft actually has a price advantage now. And there's no going back, whether they call it an actual price drop or not.

It was a gutsy move, but it was the right one, and it'll require an answer from Sony. Whether Sony thinks they're far enough ahead or not remains to be seen, but it would be great to get a PS4 bundled with a game at its $400 price point, especially if that game is the recently confirmed The Last of Us: Remastered.

Speaking of AAA-exclusives, Titanfall will have undoubtedly helped push the Xbox One ahead. Rumors have circulated that the Xbox 360 version was delayed specifically to bolster sales of the Xbox One, and that sounds like a gambit that will pay off big for Microsoft.

Now, that doesn't mean Titanfall is on top overall. I think there's a pretty slim chance that it'll have beaten out a multiplatform last-gen title like South Park: The Stick of Truth (which is my front-runner for best-selling game of March) or even Dark Souls II, but Titanfall likely came out ahead in terms of next-gen. Sony's Infamous: Second Son was well-received, but Titanfall not only has the advantage of getting a PC release, it's also a game with immediate appeal to the Call of Duty and Battlefield crowd.

Will Microsoft be able to carry this momentum over to April? It's unlikely that the Xbox One will remain on top, but the 360 version of Titanfall (and no corresponding big title from Sony) will ensure that combined sales of Microsoft's consoles give them a lot of good news. Maybe not enough to upset the edge Sony has in worldwide sales, but it's going to be an exciting, neck-and-neck race in the lead-up to E3.

Tom Mc Shea - Desperation pays

Is five months too soon to panic? Considering how long a console's life cycle lasts, most would say that there's no need for rash moves so soon after launch. But Microsoft didn't see things that way. After falling far behind the PlayStation 4 in worldwide sales, we saw a number of desperate moves that not even the most reactionary people could have predicted. Microsoft had already shelled out money to Electronic Arts to secure exclusive next-gen rights to Titanfall--which I thought would have been enough for the Xbox One to draw even with its main competition for the month of March--and we saw a major shake-up shortly after the game's release. Not only was the game bundled with systems, but a price drop across many retailers (included Microsoft's website) means you can get the console and a copy of the game for only $50 more than what the PlayStation 4 costs on its own.

Now we're left with the cold, hard numbers from that quick price drop. If Microsoft's console once more comes up short to Sony's, we can officially say that the first signs of trouble are emerging. But if it came out ahead of the PlayStation 4, then it proves that Microsoft's moves ultimately worked in getting people interested in jumping to the next generation. Oh, what a scary day this must be for executives in Redmond.

My guess is that Microsoft's major price cut will push it slightly ahead of the PlayStation 4 this month. More so than even Titanfall landing at retail, a price drop creates a ripple among the buying public that shows immediate results. After all, who doesn't like getting a deal? Once word broke that major retailers were slashing prices, people across the nation assuredly jumped at the opportunity to take advantage of that discount. This is especially true because the price cut was presented as a temporary sale rather than a permanent markdown, so people were even more likely to strike while the iron was hot. Of course, there's no way Microsoft can raise the price back to $500 without a game, so we've seen the first price slash in the console war, and one that took place even quicker than when Nintendo cut the 3DS' price six months after it launched in America.

So, if the Xbox One sells better than the PlayStation 4, does that mean that its biggest exclusive (Titanfall) will outsell Sony's (Infamous: Second Son)? Not quite. We already know that Second Son has sold 1 million copies worldwide, and it's reasonable to guess 600,000 of those have been in America. And I doubt Titanfall sold that many copies on the Xbox One. Not only could people buy it on PC as well, but many waited for the oft-delayed though technically sound Xbox 360 version. Even with a price drop, shelling out so much money for a console because you're interested in one game isn't too enticing, especially if you already own another platform that can run it.

Considering how much money Microsoft spent to catch up to Sony, I have to wonder if they're happy with their investments. Was it worth whatever they had to pay Electronic Arts to keep Titanfall off Sony's platforms? Did selling their console for even cheaper warrant how much money they're now losing on each Xbox One sold? It's too early to tell at this point. One thing is clear, Sony has to make a move to counter Mcrosoft's, though it's unclear what their next step will be. Maybe we'll see a Killzone: Shadow Fall pack-in, or free year of PlayStation Plus included with each system. Who knows? But resting on your laurels is rarely a good strategy, especially when your competition is so anxious to make strides.

One final prediction. Though so much talk has centered around the two major exclusives, I think both will be outsold by a gem from last generation. Souls fans are a fanatical bunch (I know because I'm one of them), and after Dark Souls sold more than 2 million copies, it's clear there are enough who are interested in these amazing games to create waves at retail. And when you factor in the massive install base of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, I believe Dark Souls II trumped both Titanfall and Infamous: Second Son. Will I be right? Tune in to the NPD sales numbers later today to find out.

Editor's Note: This article originally stated that the NPD numbers would be released on April 10th. In actuality, those numbers will be made public April 17th. Well, that's not entirely true. I did know what to think, and it went something like this: "Boy, this is a pretty game. But holy heck does this look hard. Hey, is that Ryse?"

My past self was kind of an idiot.

Fortunately, I've learned my ways. This weekend at PAX East, I finally gave Below the attention it deserves and came away impressed with what the team at Capy (Sword & Sworcery, Super Time Force) has been up to. Below is a dark and atmospheric take on the roguelike genre, a game that draws inspiration from Dark Souls and Spelunky, with a bit of Zelda thrown in for good measure. You explore a mysterious world without the guidance of any text or tutorials, descending deeper and deeper through a series of underground environments for no reason other than the allure of finding out what--here it comes--lies below.

Below is hard. It's brutal and unforgiving, a game where a seemingly minor attack from one of the earliest enemies can cause you to bleed out and die if the wound is left unattended. The darkness is just as deadly, urging you to proceed through each new level at a methodical pace, shield and sword firmly at the ready. And on top of all that, Below goes out of its way to drive home your insignificance by portraying you as a tiny figure in a vast chasm of shadows. This is not a game that inspires an immediate sense of confidence.

No, confidence comes later--and that's what makes Below so enticing. As you slowly move through one randomly generated level to the next, you'll become better and better at staying alive: learning how to spot booby traps, how to anticipate the movements of crafty enemies, and how those strange ingredients you scavenge along the way can be crafted into helpful items. But all of that comes after dying. Lots and lots of dying.

And you know what? I'm not afraid of that anymore. Within the past year, I finally got over my fear of brutal games and played both Spelunky and Dark Souls. While I'm still working my way through Dark Souls, I'm in love with the way its beautiful world--a place full of secrets and rewards--pushes you onward in spite of the ever-present specter of death.

Spelunky, on the other hand, I've pretty much played inside and out a million times over. I remember texting fellow GameSpotter Chris Watters as I tried to pull off the infamous key run, a feat that requires you to lug a golden key across the bulk of the game in order to unlock a shortcut to the game's fourth world. My texts to Chris (my Spelunky mentor) were both vulgar and exclusively composed in capital letters, and every single one of them was unfit for publishing here on GameSpot. But over the subsequent weeks, I dedicated myself to learning Spelunky's well-hidden secrets, finally managing to beat not only the game's primary boss, but also the hidden boss that, according to PSN trophy data, only 2 percent of players have managed to do.

So, suffice it to say, I was able to look at Below with fresh eyes this time around. And even though I died over and over within the 30 or so minutes I spent with the game at PAX East, I could tell that this game already had its hooks in me. And while a lot of that has to do with the way Below follows in the footsteps of similar games, much of it has to do with its own innovations.

For one, Below's aesthetic is striking and distinct. The environments you visit are harsh and awash in darkness, but there's also an abstract, ethereal beauty to them. These are ominous 2D landscapes, but ones designed with a gorgeous, painterly quality. On top of that, Capy has once again teamed up with Jim Guthrie, the indie rock musician who provided the wonderfully ambient soundtrack for Sword & Sworcery. While there are shades of Sworcery in Below's music, it feels more subdued and fitting with the eerie darkness.

Those aesthetic details are evident right from the outset. What's less evident is how well the game's top-down, Zelda-inspired swordplay holds up over the long haul. Given how tiny your character appears onscreen, I'm curious how the item progression will work--can you feel a substantial difference between different pieces of equipment when the camera is so far removed? Can you really savor the moment you pick up something shiny and new when you're little more than a speck on the screen? I'm sure Capy's got some clever ideas in the works, but I'm curious nonetheless.

At any rate, Below was probably my favorite experience at PAX East. Having finally gotten over my fear of brutal games, I was able to go into this demo with open eyes and was rewarded immensely for it. Am I just getting my hopes up? It's possible. We'll find out for sure when Below launches on the PC and Xbox One sometime this year.
Thu, 17 Apr 2014 10:02:00 -0700 http://www.gamespot.com/articles/below-or-how-i-learned-to-stop-being-a-baby-and-love-punishing-games/1100-6419063/ http://www.gamespot.com/articles/enjoy-your-easter-weekend-then-pick-up-walking-dead-season-2-for-ps-vita-on-april-22/1100-6419061/

The Walking Dead: Season Two will debut for PlayStation Vita on April 22, developer Telltale Games announced today in a post on the PlayStation Blog.

Episodes 1 ("All That Remains) and 2 ("A House Divided) will be available on that date, and you can buy them individually for $5 each or you can buy the $20 Season Pass.

These range in price from $2,099 for a 49" TV all the way up to the incomprehensibly expensive $24,999 for an 85" display. More details about the new Bravia TV line are available at Sony's website.

The new Bravia TVs will let you stream PS3 games, but you'll need a DualShock 3 controller to play. It's unclear if a controller is included, but at those prices, we certainly hope that's the case. There's no word yet on when European gamers can get in on the action.

You'll be able to stream older-generation games through your PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita, as well as the aforementioned Bravia TVs and even smartphones and tablets sometime down the road.
