Mojang and Telltale Games today announced a brand new episodic series based on Minecraft, launching in 2015 for PC, console, and mobiles.

"Minecraft: Story Mode -- A Telltale Games Series" will be principally developed by Telltale in collaboration with Mojang, itself a subsidiary of Microsoft.

The game will tell an original story that's "driven by player choice." Story Mode is nota Minecraft expansion, but instead a standalone game.

"Telltale's series will mix new characters with familiar themes, in an entirely original Minecraft experience, inspired by the Minecraft community and the game that continues to inspire a generation," Telltale said.

In terms of visuals, Story Mode won't "won't look exactly like Minecraft," Mojang said in an interactive press release, "but it will feel authentic in its own special way."

Minecraft: Story Mode is the latest collaborative work from Telltale, following its debut seasons of its Game of Thrones and Tales from the Borderlands franchises, as well as a third season of The Walking Dead.

Xbox maker Microsoft acquired Mojang and the Minecraft franchise in September for $2.5 billion. Following the deal, Minecraft creator and Mojang founder Markus "Notch" Persson exited the company.
