The upcoming PC port of Xbox One launch title Ryse: Son of Rome is a genuine port and not just a way for Crytek to rake up some funds in light of its recent financial issues. That's according to senior producer Brian Chambers, who acknowledged in an interview with Kotaku UK that "revenue's always good," but development on the game actually began months ago.

"We've been working on this for months," he said. "It's nothing we've pulled together. I've personally been on this project as a senior producer for months."

Mechanically, the PC version of Ryse is on par with the Xbox One version. But to beef the game up with PC-exclusive features like 4K support required extra technical work. "It's important that it's not just a port," Chambers said. "We didn't go, 'Let's just shove it on PC and be done.' We dug into it and did a lot on the engineering side to actually get it to 4K. So it's the first 4K game to come out of Crytek."

"We didn't go, 'Let's just shove it on PC and be done'" -- Brian Chambers

And the technical improvements don't end there. "We've dug in on the technical side as far as the anti-aliasing approaches we've taken," Chambers said, explaining that the PC version features also features super sampling.

"We've done other things such as native UI resolutions so you can scale it however and everything still looks crisp and clean," he added. "And then, as you would expect on PC, we've made it so that it's all configurable so the user can tweak the settings as they need to work best with the hardware that they have."

Though Chambers suggests that the PC version of Ryse is not a specific response to the cash issues and subsequent "transitional" phase at Crytek--which led to layoffs and the sale of the Homefront franchise--he said he understands how some people might think that.

"We were aware what was going on," Chambers said. "We knew we were going through a period where we were making choices to transition to self-publishing and games as a service. We were well aware that the transition was going to be felt a little bit. The communication was there and we were aware of the situation." The PC version of Ryse is in development at Crytek's studio in Frankfurt, Germany, which was unaffected by the corporate issues.

Ryse for PC, which launches this fall, will include every piece of add-on content released on Xbox One to date. This includes a long list of content like the Colosseum Pack, the Mars Chosen Pack, the Duel of Fates Pack, the Morituri Pack, the Ruins multiplayer map, Survival mode, and the Legionnaire's Trust sword that was initially released as part of the game's special edition.

Ryse: Son of Rome becomes the second high-profile Xbox One exclusive launch title to be heading to PC, following Dead Rising 3. That game comes to PC on September 5. Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli said recently that the company is "not 100 percent happy with Xbox One sales."

The upcoming Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of open-world action game Grand Theft Auto V will blow you away, according to Rockstar Games parent company Take-Two Interactive That's because, CEO Strauss Zelnick says in a new interview, "nothing but the very best will satisfy [developer] Rockstar Games."

"They want to blow consumers away," Zelnick told MCV. "Whatever the expectation is, they want to exceed it. When you see GTA V on next-gen, I want you to tell me whether it is or isn't better than your expectation. I can guarantee it will be better."

"How can you buy a next-gen console and not want to play GTA on it?" -- Strauss Zelnick

GTA V has already shipped 34 million copies on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 alone, and it was the best-selling game of 2013. But Zelnick isn't satisfied just yet. "One way to look at it is that 34 million copies have been sold, but there's 7 billion people on Earth," he said. "So we have over 6.9 billion people left to address."

Zelnick went on to say that it's almost a sure-thing that GTA V will sell well when it comes to Xbox One and PS4. "GTA is the standard bearer in the industry," he said. "How can you buy a next-gen console and not want to play GTA on it?"

GTA V for Xbox One and PS4 (and PC, too) promises better visuals, more densely populated worlds, and increased draw distances, among other improvements over the existing Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. Zelnick also stressed that the new versions of GTA V aren't just quick cash-ins.

"We really are driven by our passion for the business," he said. "I know it sounds hard to believe from capitalists, which we also are, but what keeps us up at night and gets us here early in the morning and makes us excited, is that we pride ourselves on making the best interactive entertainment in the business."

"We are not trying to deliver the minimum acceptable quality and monetize it," he added. "We are trying to delight consumers and monetize it."

GTA V launches this fall for Xbox One, PS4, and PC, though a specific release date has not yet been announced. Your existing Xbox 360 or PS3 Grand Theft Auto Online characters will carry forward, regardless of which new platform you play on.

The Dead Space series is not dead, and is in fact an "important" IP for publisher Electronic Arts, Visceral Games general manager Steve Papoutsis says. Speaking with Kotaku UK, Papoutsis said there is a lot of love for the series at EA.

"Is Dead Space dead? Not for me it's not," he said. "I love it, the team at Visceral loves it."

After working on the Dead Space franchise for seven years, Papoutsis said moving on to a new project--Battlefield Hardline--was a "good break for us to try something different."

All the same, Papoutsis made it clear that the Dead Space series is an essential brand to EA, and even teased that he'd like to see it return for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 some day.

"There's a lot of passion about that franchise, not just from me but from others in the company," he said. "So I think it's an IP that's important for the company. You never know where it's going to go... I'd definitely be excited about what it would be like on this [generation of consoles]."

In June, EA Studios executive vice president Patrick Söderlund said the Dead Space series could return, but only if EA is able to come up with an idea that retains the core spirit of the franchise and the development team is enthusiastic about it.

The most recent Dead Space game was 2013's Dead Space 3, which failed to meet commercial expectations for EA. It was later reported that the Dead Space series was canceled outright, though EA swiftly refuted this claim, going on to say that the franchise is a "great brand."

The upcoming Silent Hill game that Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima and Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro are working on together is going for an extreme scare-factor. During yesterday's special livestream, which was focused primarily on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Kojima also took some time to outline his plans for the new Silent Hill game.

Kojima said, through a translator, that he originally wanted to design the new Silent Hill game--which he is calling Silent Hills--so that it would make you "pee your pants." But after speaking more with del Toro, the pair decided to ramp up the scare-intensity. Now, the studio says you should have an extra pair of pants at the ready when you play the game because, "We are aiming for a game that will make you sh*t your pants."

He went on to explain that there is a danger with making a game that is too scary. For a scary movie or a frightening amusement park ride, people can just close their eyes and wait until it ends. But in the context of games, people will stop playing if they are too scared; but Kojima isn't concerned about this.

"If you don't want to continue playing through the game, so be it. We don't care," he said. "We are aiming for a game that will make you s**t your pants. So please make sure you have a [change of clothes]." Kojima also joked that the limited edition for Silent Hills will come with a pair of pants.

Silent Hills was originally revealed this week as horror game P.T. ("playable teaser"), which was launched as a free demo on the PlayStation Store with almost no explanation as to what it was. Kojima admitted that P.T. was an experiment in making a game with Konami's own FOX Engine. But the graphics had to be pared down so people wouldn't know Kojima Productions made it, he said.

He went on to say that he was surprised that it was so quickly discovered that P.T. was in fact Silent Hills; he expected that it might take a week to be solved. Kojima also said that one of his goals for the P.T. experiment was to bring people together in an effort to discover the truth. Sony's long-in-development PlayStation 3 adventure game The Last Guardian was nowhere to be seen at E3 and we didn't see it this week at Gamescom, either. Just because Sony isn't showing the game publicly, and doesn't plan to soon, doesn't mean it's been canceled, the company said this week.

Asked by Eurogamer if Sony would re-reveal The Last Guardian at Tokyo Game Show next month, worldwide studios president Shuhei Yoshida said, "I don't think so. Sorry." Pressed for an answer regarding when Sony will finally show the game off again, Yoshida initially offered up the response we have heard time and again, before teasing something new.

"When we are ready," he said. "I cannot confirm any timing because we are waiting for it to be in a state where we are happy that this is the game. We have a certain time frame in our mind (emphasis added), and the team is making great progress, but still not to the point that we can say that, 'here you go.'"

The Last Guardian was initially announced all the way back in 2009, during that year's E3, meaning it's now been in development for at least five years. Yoshida went on to explain that unspecified "technical issues on PS3" are partially to blame for the extended development time. He also admitted that the game's tentative 2011 release window "was a mistake."

Now, The Last Guardian has been "totally re-engineered," Yoshida said. "[Developer Team Ico is] still working on it. I've been seeing the progress." Yoshida's comments would seem to suggest that The Last Guardian has shifted to the PlayStation 4, but that remains to be seen.

The Last Guardian tells a boy-and-his-dog tale, where the dog is a giant and feathered, yet seemingly amiable, beast. Team Ico has not been forthcoming with specific plot details, but gameplay will involve the boy manipulating his companion to navigate a variety of environmental puzzles.

]]> 1100-6421717Thu, 14 Aug 2014 04:50:00 -0700 http://www.gamespot.com/articles/forza-horizon-2-lets-you-hang-out-in-a-van-down-by/1100-6421716/ Microsoft and Playground Games are showing a new demo of Forza Horizon 2 here at Gamescom 2014, and it's one that's absolutely packed with new features. It includes a look at the new day-night cycle, a feature that lets you hang out in a parking lot trading liveries with other players, and the return of custom tuning settings that never made the transition from Motorsport to the first Horizon. To be honest, there were so many new features unveiled that I had kind of a hard time stringing them all together into one coherent story. But one thing I do know about Forza Horizon 2 is that you can finally hang out in a van down by the river.

First, it's important to know what Playground is aiming to do with the car selection in Horizon 2. With over 200 cars available at launch, the development team wants to complement the standard selection of race cars with more esoteric selections that players might not expect. That includes offroading options like the Local Motors Rally Fighter and even the 1945 Willys Jeep, but also classic--if not always beloved--options like the 1963 Volkswagen Camper. Yes, that signature vehicle from the Summer of Love collecting dust in garages all across Berkeley, California will exist within the same selection of vehicles as the brand-new Lamborghini Huracan.

Next, you need to know about the world of Horizon 2. Set in a geographically diverse stretch of Southern Europe that's three times as big as the world of the first Horizon, the setting of this game offers far more off-roading options than its predecessor. At one point in the demo, the Playground rep driving spent a good two minutes avoiding any sort of road whatsoever, careening through vinyards and grassy plains and even a shallow river bed. Sure, there are plenty of roads too, but it's definitely a game that gives you the option veer off the beaten path.

With a day-night cycle and real-time weather effects, that means you can do all of that off-roading in the dead of night while rain is pouring down from the sky. I can only imagine what it would be like cruising through a muddy river bed in a 63 VW Camper with nothing more to guide you than the light of the moon. Alright, so maybe that's a little impractical...and dangerous...and also a bit ridiculous. But hey, isn't getting a little crazy half the fun of an open-world game, racing or not?

It's been almost nine years since it was released, and after getting some hands-on time with the Galactic Civilizations III beta, I can see that Stardock has been hard at work to ensure that the new game deserves its moniker. The developer has beefed up the terrain of the galaxy, provided interesting strategic options, revamped the ship designer, added unique resources, and implemented more advanced options for managing your colonies.

Of course, it wouldn't be a 4X game without a healthy dose of exploration, and that's where you notice the greatest improvements. The varied maps feature vast numbers of anomalies, colonizable planets, black holes, and valuable resources ripe for extraction. These regions form a perfect environment to exploit for a tactical advantage, varying play and opening up options for both defenders and attackers.

The ship designer has also received a complete overhaul, and is no longer merely cosmetic. Your changes actually affect how heavy the ship is, how much it costs to produce, what it can carry, and how well-armed it is. If you really dig into the editor, you can squeeze a lot of extra performance out of your designs for the same cost. The editor also includes robust cosmetic options, and many of the parts of a ship can be fully animated. While not in the beta currently, lighting and other advanced animation and modeling features are planned, all of which can make your ships the intergalactic dreadnoughts you know they should be.

As your empire spreads on the backs of your customized spacecraft, you'll have the opportunity to decide the path of your empire with moral choices. Each time you land on a new planet, you have a choice to make. Most deal with the local wild life, odd geological conditions, or ancient ruins. Over time, you'll have to push your empire in one of three directions: Pragmatism, Benevolence, or Malevolence. Each path serves as its own kind of tech tree, providing bonuses that support your play style. Some races naturally tend towards one style or another, and they all have their own separate, unique technology trees to complement their ideologies.

When you've founded a new colony and are trying to manage its development, you'll notice a number of new additions. The most obvious is the switch to hexes over the series' traditional squares. In gameplay terms, that means that structures that afford bonuses to specific kinds of adjacent buildings can enhance more structures at a time. There's also a greater variety in the planets you find, each boasting different layout for its resource tiles and a distinct look. Wealth, research, and industrial manufacturing specialization also got a facelift. Now, resource allocation is handled with an allocation wheel, with numbers that change in real time to help you decide which approach is best when laying out a plan for your empire's economic development. You also have the option to change your manufacturing output from planetary improvement to starship production and vice versa.

Extermination is the last of the four X's, and it's currently the only path to victory in the Galactic Civilizations III beta; diplomacy, trade, and minor civilizations haven't been implemented. Stardock also plans to add a cinematic camera to battles so you can get a front-row view of the destruction, but for now, battles are fairly dry affairs.

Galactic Civilizations III is still rather rough, but it's potential shines through. More tactical play, more strategic and economic options, and even micro-scale planning are all helpful and built around solid mechanics. Only time will tell if it can live up to the fantastic games that came before it.
