The US Commander-in-chief has not forgotten that gesture, specifically mentioning The Witcher series this week during an appearance in Poland. Obama said the acclaimed role-playing video game series developed in the country by CD Projekt Red is a "great example" of how Poland contributes to the global economy.

"The last time I was here, Donald (Polish prime minister) gave me a gift, the video game developed here in Poland that's won fans the world over, The Witcher," Obama said during the event, as translated by CD Projekt Red's PR agency. "I confess, I'm not very good at video games, but I've been told that it is a great example of Poland's place in the new global economy. And it's a tribute to the talents and work ethic of the Polish people as well as the wise stewardship of Polish leaders like prime minister Tusk."

You can watch a video of Obama's comments through Polish media outlet TVN24.

The Witcher is arguably the most well-known video game series ever to come out of Poland. CD Projekt Red's fantasy Witcher series is based on Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski's novel series of the same name.

Later this week, CD Projekt Red will hold its annual Summer Conference. In the previous three Arkham games, a combination of agility and sweet gadgets (like the grapnel gun and his all-purpose cape) allowed the Dark Knight to rise, swoop, dive, and generally traverse the urban peaks and valleys of Gotham with speed and ease. So earlier this year when the batmobile was unveiled as the key new addition for the next game in the series--Batman: Arkham Knight--I was, admittedly, a little puzzled. Sure, the batmobile is pretty cool and all, but is it really a good fit for the Arkham series? With Batman never having trouble with locomotion in previous games, is the addition of another mode of fast movement really needed?

Our first look at the batmobile was the demo shown at the Game Developers Conference this year, which featured chases and fast runs through Gotham's streets. It turns out this was just half of what this iconic vehicle will bring to the game. In Arkham Knight, the Batmobile will be able to turn into an agile, heavily weaponized tank. At the press of a button, the batmobile will "transform," with turrets appearing and wheels realigning to allow for strafing movements. In Arkham Knight, the batmobile will certainly have speed, but it will also have teeth.

Batman's going to need a little more firepower to square off against these guys.

This seems to be developer Rocksteady's answer to why it thinks the introduction of a vehicle to the arsenal of an already mobile superhero is a worthwhile addition. The batmobile won't just be there as flashy transport, an object to be used in some specific levels and completely forgotten in most others. No, the batmobile in Arkham Knight is intended to be an integral addition, another gadget in Batman's arsenal that he can call on at any minute.

This man-machine synergy was shown off during a recent demo of Batman: Arkham Knight. The section I saw took place in the second chapter of the game, and had Batman trying to infiltrate the Ace Chemicals factory after it was revealed to be where Scarecrow was manufacturing massive amounts of fear toxin. The titular Arkham Knight was also there, and for the first time was shown to be the leader of a sizable army, complete with infantry, tanks, and drones.

Initially, Batman took a more traditional route into Ace Chemicals, using his grapnel gun (which can now be fired twice in midair to chain grapnels together) to go high and undetected, before sneaking around to take out groups of guards. The combat, as we've come to expect from an Arkham game, was dynamic and crunchy, with Batman's supreme skills making light work of his opponents. So far, so same, but things quickly got more interesting when Batman decided to switch to the batmobile, controlling his ride via remote from the inside of Ace while the vehicle was outside.

Once the batmobile was in Ace Chemicals, Batman leaped inside and immediately took on a group of tank drones in a small, enclosed space. The car's increased mobility was immediately apparent (and useful), with the batmobile able to strafe left and right, as well as use short dash bursts to avoid incoming fire. And the batmobile's offensive capabilities won't be limited for use when Batman is behind the wheel. In one section I was shown, the Arkham Knight and a large group of soldiers the Caped Crusader trapped in a small room. While the Arkham Knight was busy monologuing, Batman summoned the batmobile via remote, and used its riot suppressors to take out some of his foes. Batman even used his car while in the middle of melee combat, with a batmobile-assisted takedown having Batman uppercut an enemy into the air, only to be followed by a shot from the car's riot suppressor to finish off the unfortunate baddie.

Man. Machine. The fusion.

And it's not just in combat situations that the batmobile may prove useful for Batman. After the battle shenanigans with soldiers and tanks aboveground, Batman ventured deeper into the underground complex of Ace Chemicals, a place where you'd expect limited use for the batmobile. That wasn't the case, however, with a puzzle involving a broken elevator and its counterweight needing the remote-controlled assistance of the batmobile from aboveground. Batman also had to keep switching to the batmobile in order to use its winch to turn off steam pipes that blocked his forward progress belowground.

It's this integration into both the combat and the puzzle elements of the game that makes me the most curious--and excited--about the potential of the batmobile in Batman: Arkham Knight. I'm hopeful that the batmobile isn't just a throwaway gimmick, and it seems developer Rocksteady Studios is working to make sure the batmobile and Batman are seamlessly joined in the game. Rocksteady marketing game manager Guy Perkins says the entire design of the game has been informed by the inclusion of the batmobile.

"It's been at the heart of the design of Arkham Knight--it's informed how big the city is, how wide the streets are, how you navigate through those. And introducing it with the two modes, again, every design decision is made around that," he said.

"The ability to drive through more narrow, dangerous paths is fundamentally one of the reasons why it moves in a strafing, more third-person movement for a vehicle. So you could be engaging with folks in a vehicle, and you could chase them down using the immobilizer rockets in pursuit mode. Or you can chase, jump out of the car, land on their car, and pull the driver out. Or you could decide to transform into battle mode and shoot the vehicle with a nonlethal means to take it down," Perkins continued.

The ability to drive through more narrow, dangerous paths is fundamentally one of the reasons why it moves in a strafing, more third-person movement for a vehicle.
Guy Perkins, Rocksteady

"The batmobile is another character almost in that it works with Batman and augments his abilities in different ways. You can puzzle solve; you can engage in combat. You're never more than a button press away from the batmobile. It's a partnership--we never want people to feel that this is a very specific batmobile section and that this is a very specific Batman level. We want them to ask, 'How will the two work together?'"

Of course, we'll all have to wait longer to actually experience how well the game melds the Batman and batmobile together, with Arkham Knight's release date now pushed back to sometime in 2015. Perkins says the delay is due to one simple thing--Rocksteady just needed more time.

"If we didn't give the team more time to do it, then we would be releasing something that we weren't happy with. It's the latest entry in the Avengers Alliance series that has already attracted some 70 million players to date.

As you can see in the image above, the squad-based RPG bears a resemblance to the popular XCOM series, and sees you taking on the role of a S.H.I.E.L.D. commander who must recruit a team of superheroes to defend Earth. The roster is 20 characters deep, including the likes of Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America, as well as unlockable heroes like Loki and Task Master.

Disney says Marvel: Avengers Alliance will follow the Marvel: Avengers Alliance content release model, in that the company will release story and character expansions on a regular basis. You'll also be able to upgrade your heroes' powers throughout gameplay or by spending real-world money.

To go deeper about Marvel: Avengers Alliance Tactics, we caught up with Disney executive producer Gabe Brown. You can read our full Q&A below. You can play Marvel: Avengers Alliance Tactics today for free on Facebook.

GameSpot: A lot of gamers might see 'Facebook game' and let out a sigh. Can you explain why you decided to choose Facebook as the platform for this game?

Gabe Brown: Facebook is a great platform for fans to play with their friends. Similar to Marvel: Avengers Alliance, we wanted to bring fresh and fun gameplay to where our players are. One advantage of running a game on Facebook is the speed and pace with which we can provide more content and features for our player base to enjoy.

GS: Do you have plans to roll this out for iOS and Android some day?

GB: We're constantly looking at what are the best platforms for our games and we've certainly considered it.

GS: What about consoles like the Xbox One or PlayStation 4, both of which play nice with free-to-play games?

"Our team are inspired by a lot of classic Tactics games throughout history. XCOM, Disgaea, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Jagged Alliance to name just a few" -- Executive producer Gabe Brown

GB: We're excited about the potential of free-to-play games on console and Steam; we're focusing on where our players are first before expanding to other platforms.

GS: The game's top-down perspective reminds me a lot of XCOM: Enemy Unknown; was this game an inspiration for you when working on Alliance Tactics?

GB: Our team are inspired by a lot of classic Tactics games throughout history. XCOM, Disgaea, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Jagged Alliance to name just a few. It's really exciting for us as a team to bring these classic games we played growing up to life into a brand new experience with Marvel super heroes!

GS: The turn-based strategy genre seems to be making a comeback of late; why do you think that is?

GB: The turn-based strategy genre has started making a comeback thanks to games becoming much more approachable. Avengers Alliance really made it possible for many people to pick up and learn how to play an RPG. We're doing the same thing with Avengers Alliance Tactics by introducing a tactics game that is approachable and deep in the same way we did with Avengers Alliance.

GS: You say you can recruit and develop characters like Thor and Iron Man individually, but how deep does the customization go?

GB: Recruiting is just the beginning in Tactics! Players can recruit Heroes and Agents, unlock Villains to join their team and manage their progress in a variety of ways. Players will be able to purchase new abilities for the character, upgrade the power of each, and equip them to the character however they like. The number of combinations to outfit your characters are endless and we're excited to see what combinations our players discover!

GS: Free-to-play and microtransactions are hot topics today; how did you go about designing the monetization model for Alliance Tactics so that players feel it's a fair offering?

GB: The focus is having fun first! We make sure the game is fun to play without having to pay. We then create shortcuts that let players who want to want to save time or don't want to wait. So far, it's been a great system that lets us bring Avengers Alliance to the world!

GS: How specifically do microtransactions work in Alliance Tactics?

GB: Similar to Marvel: Avengers Alliance, players can purchase Gold and Silver. They then can use it to purchase just about anything they would want in the game.

GS: Marvel is obviously one of Disney's new crown jewels and they no doubt want to see its legacy remain intact; were some of your ideas reined in, or did you have a significant level of creative freedom to do what you wanted?

GB: We work very closely with our partners at Marvel and collaborate to make the best and most authentic to Marvel game possible. The best products come from having ideas challenged and having the freedom to experiment and we couldn't be happier with the team at Disney and Marvel.

GS: Lastly, could you set up the story for Alliance Tactics?

GB: A mysterious cosmic threat puts Earth in harm's way. Portals call 'incursions' are appearing across the globe. Each of these incursions brings a flood of imposter heroes from imposter universes. Warner Bros. announced today that Batman: Arkham Knight for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC has been delayed and is now expected to launch sometime in 2015. Previously, the game was scheduled to launch this fall.

Why the delay?

"We just want to make this the best experience that we can, and that takes time," Rocksteady Studios marketing manager Guy Perkins told GameSpot. "We feel that we have an absolutely awesome game in the works, and we want to make it as great as it possibly can be. We just need more time to do that. If we didn't give the team more time to do it, then we would be releasing something that we weren't happy with. We want to make sure we're absolutely nailing it 100 percent."

Batman: Arkham Knight is skipping the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, instead coming to Xbox One, PS4, and PC. According to Perkins, Rocksteady's full vision for the game could not be realized on last-gen hardware

"The Batmobile is one thing we just couldn't do on previous gen. It's not just a case of having a car, it's a case of building a city where the car feels at home," he said. "So if we were to try and bring the Batmobile into Arkham City, for example, the streets aren't conducive to that driving experience. You have to create a much bigger environment to house the vehicle."

"Gotham City is five times larger than the game world of Arkham City." -- Guy Perkins

"Gotham City is five times larger than the game world of Arkham City. And by virtue of having a bigger city, you need more memory and more horsepower to just make that happen," he added.

Not only that, but the detailed character models for Batman: Arkham Knight would be too much for last-generation hardware, Perkins said. "The details on the models we have is insanely huge at this moment--the detail on Batman alone is phenomenal," he said. "Having these current-gen platforms [Xbox One and PS4] allows us to really flex our muscles in terms of art and animation, and we're building everything to make it look as good as it possibly can. The beauty is our engine team can now say yes to our artists; before they were always struggling with what they have available. But now it's more a case of, 'What can't we do?' and, 'Where can we push it even harder?'"

Asked if the technical performance for Batman: Arkham Knight would be the same for the Xbox One and PS4 versions, Perkins said, "We have a benchmark in mind, and we want to give gamers the best experience. We are optimizing at the moment; it's always a challenge, but we want to get to the best place."

For more on Batman: Arkham Knight, be sure to check out GameSpot's previous coverage, including our just-published preview of the game.

Eddie Makuch is a news editor at GameSpot, and you can follow him on Twitter @EddieMakuch

Got a news tip or want to contact us directly?

We want to make sure we're absolutely nailing it 100%," he said.

Take your time, Rocksteady. A batmobile-suitable Gotham can't be built in a day.
Tue, 03 Jun 2014 06:00:00 -0700 http://www.gamespot.com/articles/why-the-batmobile-is-more-than-just-a-car-in-batman-arkham-knight/1100-6420042/ http://www.gamespot.com/articles/new-xcom-like-marvel-avengers-game-is-fun-even-if-you-don-t-pay-disney-says/1100-6420049/

Disney today released a new Marvel game on Facebook called Marvel: Avengers Alliance Tactics.
