The comments from from Oculus VR CEO Brendan Iribe, who spoke to GamesIndustry International about virtual reality's mainstream appeal in response to a question about how he thought parents might react to technology that does not allow them to watch what their children are playing.

"I'm not worried about it, " Iribe said. "We'll put all kinds of parental management and security and privacy features in the system. We're very aware of that and we're going to try to build a platform that really caters to parents. This is a technology, it's one of those things where some people [say,] 'But yeah, aren't you worried that X, Y and Z could hold this back?' You cannot hold back VR. You can't hold back cellphones. You can't hold back the PC. It's going to happen. It's either Oculus or it is somebody else."

"There's no holding this back. This is going to take off like wildfire..." -- Brendan Iribe

The other major player in the virtual reality space right now is Sony with its Project Morpheus headset for the PlayStation 4. While there's no word yet on when Oculus Rift or Project Morpheus will be available publicly, Iribe said he's confident virtual reality in general will explode in popularity.

"There's no holding this back. This is going to take off like wildfire and it is going to be, within some number of years, almost every household out there will be enjoying VR," he said. Everybody will have experienced VR just like they have experienced the computer or the mobile smartphones. It's going to be that powerful that fast and there'll be sensational topics that show up just like there are around computers or around console gaming or around the mobile phone. I mean, hey, we all walk around in a mobile phone zombie world, and we all look like we're staring at these phones all the time. Is Apple or Google concerned about us staring at our phones the whole time?"

Not everyone is as excited about virtual reality as Iribe is. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Grand Theft Auto parent publisher Take-Two Interactive, previously said he's enthusiastic about the technology for hardcore gamers, but questions its mainstream appeal. He, along with iconic Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto, also contend that virtual reality technology can be somewhat anti-social.

Eddie Makuch is a news editor at GameSpot, and you can follow him on Twitter @EddieMakuch

Got a news tip or want to contact us directly? Lionhead Studios boss John Needham told Eurogamer Germany (via Eurogamer) that this eight-person incubation team is not only working on entirely new projects, but also game features for upcoming Xbox One game Fable Legends.

"It's a team of about eight guys we have in the studio who are trying to build the next big IP for us," Needham said, pointing out that the team's creative director is Lionhead veteran Gary Carr. "They're working on a couple of new prototypes for completely different games--not Fable related. They'll also be working on new games we can put within Fable Legends as well."

We may not have to wait too long to find out what Lionhead's incubation team is working on, Needham teased. "The primary purpose of the group is to come up with new game IP, and we'll hopefully this [time] next year have something exciting to talk about," he said. Earlier this year, Lionhead confirmed it was working on a non-Fable game, saying, "We're not just a Fable studio."

"I want a very transparent, open, active dialogue with our community about our games .. " -- John Needham

In recent years, Lionhead's output has been exclusively Fable games, leaving fans to wonder if the studio would ever return to its classic franchises like Black & White or The Movies. Needham said, "There is great IP in Lionhead's history, it's just spotty who owns what." Black & White was published by Electronic Arts, while Activision published The Movies.

Also in the interview, Needham--who joined Lionhead just over a year ago--explained how he wants to see the studio's relationship with the community expand over time.

"Here's where the difference in modern Lionheard is going to be," he said. "You haven't seen this yet but you will. I want a very transparent, open, active dialogue with our community about our games, about Fable Legends, about whatever game comes out of incubation."

"We will have a process internally where we take that feedback seriously and we build our priorities on the game our community wants and their feedback," he added. "And we get into an iteration loop where our community feels like they're actively in development of the product."

He said this is something that MMO games do well. Even though Lionhead is not making MMOs, Needham made clear that he wants the studio to be "very community focused."

A beta for Fable Legends kicks off later this year on Xbox One, though there's no word yet on when the full game will be released.

Eddie Makuch is a news editor at GameSpot, and you can follow him on Twitter @EddieMakuch

Got a news tip or want to contact us directly? "The PC version does indeed contain some old, unused render settings that were deactivated for a variety of reasons," the post explains, "including possible impacts on visual fidelity, stability, performance and overall gameplay quality."

You can read the statement in full below:

The dev team is completely dedicated to getting the most out of each platform, so the notion that we would actively downgrade quality is contrary to everything we've set out to achieve. We test and optimize our games for each platform on which they're released, striving for the best possible quality. The PC version does indeed contain some old, unused render settings that were deactivated for a variety of reasons, including possible impacts on visual fidelity, stability, performance and overall gameplay quality. Modders are usually creative and passionate players, and while we appreciate their enthusiasm, the mod in question (which uses those old settings) subjectively enhances the game's visual fidelity in certain situations but also can have various negative impacts. Those could range from performance issues, to difficulty in reading the environment in order to appreciate the gameplay, to potentially making the game less enjoyable or even unstable.

Update: Many users are claiming that these mods may not add graphical improvements, but rather activate files and assets already contained within the PC version of the game. Mod creators TheWorse and Kadzait24 have allegedly found and activated files such as "E3 2012 Bloom" and "E3 2012 Explosions" There has already been heated controversy over the purportedly decreased graphical fidelty in Watch Dogs' final release from its first E3 showing in 2012. Ubisoft later stated that the graphics had not been downgraded.

TheWorse has said that he has found old E3 files and turned them on in his mod, but the consequence of these files has not been demonstrated yet. His mod adds many other improvements beyond these E3 files, but the specific effect of "E3 2012 Bloom" on its own has not been shown.

We have reached out to Ubisoft for comment on the existence and effect of these files in the game.

Original story below:

Regardless of how good you think Watch Dogs looked when it finally came out when compared to its initial unveiling at E3 2012, if you own the game on PC, don't mind tinkering, and have the hardware that can handle it, you can make the game look better thanks to some resourceful modders.

For example, if you've seen this video, which compares Watch Dogs to the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV (released in 2008) you've probably noticed that one thing Watch Dogs lacks is dynamic lighting from cars' headlights.

Guru3D forum member Kadzait24 and TheWorse have both claimed credit for working on a mod that adds that visual effect to Watch Dogs, along with a lot of other features.

The mod, which you can find on Guru3D, also aims to add an improved bloom effect, higher density of civilians, and more.

Watch Dogs broke 24-hour sales records for Ubisoft and went on to sell more than 4 million copies in its first week.
