It remains to be seen what that means, but Halo franchise director Frank O'Connor writes at Halo Waypoint that, "we'll have significantly more to say about that at E3 and beyond. Suffice it to say, another shoe has yet to drop."

"Getting the Halo 5: Guardians announce out of the way is a big weight off our shoulders," he added. "This audience has correctly stated and assumed that you can't necessarily squish a full Halo game into anything less than a three year development schedule--and at least up to and including Halo 5: Guardians, that's more or less true.

343 Industries is not only making a new game over the course of three years, but also a new engine for Halo 5: Guardians.

"During the development of Halo 4, we pushed the Xbox 360 and the engine to its limits, and we were happy with the way we were able to make the Halo universe look. The Xbox 360 still has a few tricks up its sleeve, even now," O'Connor said. "We are moving to a whole new platform with the Xbox One--a new architecture, new graphics hardware, and bluntly some new ways to think about gaming, period."

Halo 5: Guardians will run at 60fps and make use of dedicated servers. O'Connor acknowledged that Halo 5: Guardians of course will not be the first game to run at 60fps, but said, "these must-haves are not necessarily easy to achieve."

O'Connor also laid out his general ambition for Halo 5: Guardians overall and explained how he hopes it will push gaming forward.

"Previous Halo titles, Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 for example, strove to push the entire ecosystem forward--dual stick FPS with big open spaces in the case of Combat Evolved, and broadband matchmaking in Halo 2--are just a couple of examples of the series innovating or amplifying ideas," O'Connor said. "So in building Halo 5: Guardians, we want to push the ecosystem as well as the universe. And we'll have some surprises in store for new and loyal players of the series."

"So that's it for now, but E3 is just around the corner. So if you bide your time and hold your breath, you won't have to wait too long to hear about the next steps on this Great Journey," he said. Check it out below.

"It's only been 100 days, so I can't go into a lot of depth about a lot of things," Fergusson said about the new Gears of War. "This isn't going to be the place where I can announce the name of the next game and all these sorts of things. Obviously, it's going to take some time to get to a point where we can do so."

"We are in what we would call the concept/prototype phase so we're really super early," he added.

Discussing the challenges of starting a new studio and working on such a major franchise, Fergusson said: "The hardest part is getting people up to speed on the way you make Gears. Everybody here is a Gears of War fan; everybody's played the games and loved the games. But there's a sort of style; the way you have to think about when you make a Gears of War game."

Fergusson pointed out that the Gears of War franchise has a lot of rules, design methodologies, and central pillars that go into making a great experience. Making sure everyone at Black Tusk is on the same page and trending toward the same goal is another challenge, Fergusson said.

An advantage Fergusson says Black Tusk has in making the new Gears of War game for Xbox One is that Microsoft now owns the IP. The backing and support of Microsoft means Black Tusk can "push a lot harder" in many "major areas," he said. "I think the franchise can do a lot more now that Microsoft owns the IP. We can expand its breadth and do a lot more stuff with it."

Gears of War Xbox One concept art.

Fergusson went on to say that Black Tusk benefits from coming at the Gears of War series with fresh sets of eyes. Of course, Fergusson is a Gears of War veteran, having worked on the original trilogy, but the team he's assembled around him is new to the series. He pointed out that Epic Games spent seven years making Gears of War games, and, "After you've made the same game for seven years, it's a little bit harder, like 'how do I make it different?' And I think you might have picked up a little of that out of Gears of War: Judgment."

What Black Tusk brings to the Gears of War franchise is "raw enthusiasm," as well as passion and energy, Fergusson said. He went on to say that it's not uncommon for watercooler conversations, and awkward urinal conversations, to be about Gears of War.

It's likely that the next Gears of War game for Xbox One will have some form of multiplayer mode, and though Fergusson didn't give specifics, he did offer up his thoughts about what defines a Gears of War multiplayer experience.

"It really is about intensity and about responsibility and about accountability," Fergusson said. He said in Call of Duty games, he feels like an individual (because he doesn't play with clans), and though there are 11 other people on his team, "I feel like I have my own personal objectives, I want to unlock my red lasersight or what have you, but I'm not really so [caring] about the results of the match or the well-being of my team. Whereas in Gears...nothing gets my palms sweaty more than you know that it's on you; so when you die you know I left my team a man short. And now that's why I feel this sense of accountability. As we look forward, we have to really focus on and double down on is the idea of owning what it is that makes Gears unique and embracing what is Gears instead of potentially taking a different [approach]."

Lastly, Fergusson said Black Tusk will do its best to stay true to Gears of War canon for its new game, but he made it clear that the studio won't have any reservations about deviating if it's in the interest of fun.

"If you know anything about me, I always believe fun is greater than canon," Fergusson said. "That's not to say I'm going out of my way to destroy canon…" He pointed out that Black Tusk will pay tribute to existing Gears of War novels as much as they can, but, "if I get to a situation that I have to make a decision between what's really fun that may invalidate a comic book, odds are that I'm going to make that fun decision."

There's no release date, or even a title, for the new Gears of War game for Xbox One. Microsoft's E3 2014 briefing is slated for June 9, and the company plans to announce new games and new sequels during the event, though it's unclear if Gears of War will be part of the show.

Eddie Makuch is a news editor at GameSpot, and you can follow him on Twitter @EddieMakuch

Got a news tip or want to contact us directly? "Life to date, sales of PS4 and Xbox One hardware have more than doubled the combined sales of PS3 and 360 hardware through their first six months of sales," the press release issued today states.

"PS4 software combined with Xbox One software sales are up over 40 percent compared to sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360 through their first six months," the report continued. Even software for the beleaguered Wii U, which has struggled since its launch in 2012, was doing better than last year, with year-over-year sales up by more than 80 percent. That's likely due at least in part to the install base for the system simply being bigger that ever before.

Despite this, overall software sales were down 10 percent to $227.9 million compared with the $254.3 million generated during the same period last year. The NPD points to the launches of games like Injustice: Gods Among Us and Dead Island: Riptide in April 2013 as contributing factors.

In terms of software sales, the NPD report--which only covers new, physical sales at retail--shows Titanfall was the top-selling game for the second month in a row, perhaps thanks in part to its release on the Xbox 360 in April.

Ross says that "it's a game that will hopefully demonstrate the talent, learnings and abilities of the 343 Industries team. A game that will incorporate the things we learned from Halo 4 about technology, aesthetics, performance and scale--and perhaps more importantly, understanding and embracing a community of gamers who love what lies at the heart of this game, and the limitless potential of the Halo universe."

Halo 4, released on Xbox 360 in 2012, was the first entirely new Halo title to be released by 343 Industries, the studio founded by Microsoft to take over development of the franchise after original developer Bungie upped sticks and left to create Destiny. Halo 4 was billed as the first part of the "Reclaimer" saga and presumably will lead directly into the events of Halo 5.

Ross also added that the Halo television series, announced alongside the Xbox One itself last year, will also launch in fall 2015. During a post-earnings financial call today, CEO Yves Guillemot said, "We have made it clear that as a company we expect to continue supporting those consoles for the foreseeable future."

Also during the call, Guillemot teased that a version of upcoming stealth-action game Assassin's Creed Unity, announced only for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, could be released on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Discussing the upcoming game, Guillemot said, "[Assassin's Creed Unity] will be released this fall on Xbox One, PS4, and PC. We have not disclosed our plan yet for the Xbox 360 and PS3 SKUs."

A past report suggested that Assassin's Creed Comet is the name of the game coming to Xbox 360 and PS3 this year, though this is unconfirmed. That game will reportedly let you play as a Templar.

It's not much of a surprise that Ubisoft remains committed to the Xbox 360 and PS3 generation, especially for a tentpole franchise like Assassin's Creed. After all, the Xbox 360 and PS3 together total some 160 million units sold to date--80 million for the PS3 and 80 million for the Xbox 360. That's a much larger market than the Xbox One and PS4 generation, which currently only makes up around 10 million, though Guillemot expects this to grow substantially by next year.
