With the latest Xbox One SmartGlass update, you can, per Microsoft's words:

Navigate game options so you can quickly get to the full list of Achievements, challenges, and game clips without jumping through multiple screens.

View recent players to find people you recently gamed with, easily add them as a friend, or issue a rematch challenge.

Sort the Friends list by online status for a quick view of what your friends are doing.

View your Activity Feed in a way that matches the view on your console.

Launch an app in Snap from your mobile device, and when you're done, simply unsnap it.

Receive Xbox Live messaging alerts on your mobile device, making it easier to stay in touch with friends when you're on the go.

You can download the free Xbox One SmartGlass app for iOS and Android today.

Microsoft is also allowing select Xbox Live users in the United States, Europe, and Canada try out new OneGuide features that are "designed to improve the TV experience" on Xbox One. Users chosen to participate in the beta will see:

An enhanced TV watching experience (that's already available in the U.S.), which sees TV listings added to OneGuide, alongside Favorites and App Channels. This will work for people in Europe and Canada who have their TV connected to Xbox One via HDMI-in.

More control over Xbox One, their TV, and set-top box, including setting new recordings and watching recorded content from their DVR, all from a tablet or smart phone. Xbox SmartGlass also adds a cool new feature to show the most recently-watched channels.

New Kinect voice commands in Europe and Canada (already available in the U.S.) which let you control your set-top box and other AV equipment.

These features will be released publicly later in the year, Microsoft said.

Switching to Xbox Video, beginning this week users can rent or buy a movie from Xbox Video, start watching on one screen and then pick up exactly where they left off on another. This feature is coming later to Windows Phone 8 and XboxVideo.com users.

Eddie Makuch is a news editor at GameSpot, and you can follow him on Twitter @EddieMakuch

Got a news tip or want to contact us directly? According to an update on the game's official Japanese website, a patch later this month will introduce a new effigy: the Bonfire Sybaritic.

Players who use the Sybaritic will receive fewer souls while playing, but should find enemies easier to kill. They'll also maintain full health while in a Hollowed state and use less stamina while blocking and attacking.

The game's designer, Hidetaka Miyazaki, writes that this update will not affect players who want their core experience to remain unchanged. "While the majority of our fans prefer the intense difficulty of [Dark Souls II], fan feedback and user testing have revealed that it's also the biggest barrier to bringing new players into the experience. We wanted to introduce an item that makes the game more manageable for newcomers."

Players can purchase the Sybaritic for 500 souls from a merchant in Majula at the very beginning of the game, though the first one is free. "We hope new players will use this as a chance to get better at the game," Miyazaki writes. "After getting accustomed to the gameplay and exploration, they can then increase the difficulty at any time back to normal by burning one Bonfire Ascetic." According to the post, the Bonfire Sybaritic is able to nullify the effects of the previously irreversible Bonfire Ascetic.

The patch is set to release later this month in Japan, and it will also introduce minor bug fixes and some texture loading improvements to the 360 and PS3 versions of the game. Speaking with Polygon, Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney said he's concerned about the "closed" nature of Microsoft's latest operating system.

"I genuinely worry about the future of Microsoft," Sweeney said. "They've locked down this Windows 8. They say future app developers should focus there, but you can only ship that with Microsoft's permission and Microsoft's approval through Microsoft's store. And that sucks compared to the open nature of the PC platform before…"

On the other hand, Sweeney praised Valve's line of Steam Machines, describing the product line as the "most open high-end gaming platform ever."

But Sweeney isn't ready to write Microsoft off entirely in the PC gaming space. He said he's hopeful, due in part to the recent senior management shakeup, that Microsoft will become more "open" as it relates to developing for the Windows platform. If they don't, Linux and Steam OS are a good backup plan, he said.

"I sense kind of a renaissance at MS in the last six months," Sweeney said. "Talking to the DirectX team for example, they're making some brilliant decisions on DirectX 12 to make it more efficient and more open than ever before. You just generally sense a momentum to be more open with the community and more broad with their Windows strategy. I'm hoping that takes root."

Also in Polygon's interview, Sweeney said the virtual reality market is going to explode in popularity and prominence over time. "We're doing a huge amount of research in VR, working with Oculus kits," he said. There might be an audience for 10 million users of the current tech, but as it improves with each generation, the audience is going to keep growing until eventually you're going to reach a critical point where you can put on one of these devices and have an experience that is effectively indistinguishable from reality."

Eddie Makuch is a news editor at GameSpot, and you can follow him on Twitter @EddieMakuch

Got a news tip or want to contact us directly? Microsoft didn't say which category is the most popular, but on Xbox 360, gamers spent more time with entertainment apps than they did playing online games.

Helping drive Xbox One usage, Microsoft said, is the new Twitch app, which launched last month alongside Respawn Entertainment's multiplayer shooter Titanfall. Since launch, users have broadcast nearly 23 million minutes of content, which includes 2.7 million minutes broadcast on March 10-12--that's the most ever for a Twitch console app on its first day.

In addition, 30 percent of all Twitch unique broadcasters were broadcasting from Xbox One during the app's first day, Microsoft said. For its first week, the Twitch app on Xbox One attracted 108,000 unique users, making up 22 percent of Twitch's unique broadcasters in the same period of time.

This level of usage is far and away better than "another console," Microsoft said, likely referring to the Twitch app for PlayStation 4. "It took another console a month to achieve what the Twitch app on Xbox One did within its first week," Microsoft said.

As you might have guessed, Titanfall is the most broadcast game on Twitch using Xbox One, with more than 10 million minutes being streamed through the system to date.

"Microsoft has a put a lot of time and effort into ensuring their Twitch integration would be a robust experience, and based on the amount of Xbox One owners streaming from their living rooms, the move paid off," Twitch COO Kevin Lin said in a statement. "This high rate of adoption for our console integrations has elevated our role in the entertainment industry. People go to Hulu to watch TV, Netflix to watch movies, and now they go to Twitch to watch and broadcast video games. "I do think that it's not ideal."

At the end of the day, however, Harrison said he laughed when Sony's Adam Boyes took a shot at this policy and claimed there are more great games now than perhaps ever before, regardless of which platform you're playing on.

"Taking aside competitive positioning and all of that, the winners in all of this are game players," Harrison said. "There are more games coming out for these platforms, there are more developers creating for these platforms, there are more fresh minds coming into our industry than any time in recent memory. And that's so, so important to the future of our industry."

Finally, though Harrison wouldn't say if Microsoft is considering dropping the launch parity clause, he made it clear that bringing great games to the Xbox One is Microsoft's main focus.

"What I would say is that everybody in our program, whether it's a developer or people on the platform side working with [ID@Xbox boss Chris Charla] is committed to making sure the best games are on Xbox One," he said. "That's our job, basically, if you boil it all down to the essence of what a game platform is, it's to make sure that the biggest, best, most exciting, most creative games are on your platform and we are working super hard to make that happen."

Yesterday, Microsoft promoted Phil Spencer to Head of Xbox, where he will oversee the entire Xbox platform. "Don't worry!"

"We have no plans nor interest in following this path," wrote Roberts in an update. "We don't need to go to anyone with deep pockets to make our dream a reality. To mass-produce hardware like the Rift, you need an outlay of hundreds of millions of dollars. Luckily our ships are digital so we have hardly any cost of goods, just the cost of developing the universe of Star Citizen and running servers that Star Citizen's universe will be simulated on. Thanks to the generosity of the Star Citizen community we have these two things covered."

"I'm having way too much fun building the universe of my dreams for everyone to adventure in! I've been down the big company acquisition route twice before and there's a reason I am making Star Citizen totally independently!"

Roberts also spoke out to defend Oculus from claims of selling out following the $2bn acquisition, and continued to pledge his support to the fledgling VR headset.

"From the moment I first saw the Rift, I knew it was something special. I can tell you firsthand that the team behind the headset has a true passion for making VR tomorrow's standard."

"In order for the Rift to succeed, it really needed a lot more funding than it has raised from its past two VC rounds. Hardware is expensive: it's one thing to perfect the technology, but before you can sell a single Rift, you need to spend hundreds of millions on manufacturing and building a supply chain if you intend to make the Rift (and Virtual Reality) relevant for the mass market. Microsoft invested well over a billion dollars just to launch the Xbox One this fall! My hope is that Facebook's funding will let Oculus compete with much bigger companies and deliver an attractively priced consumer headset at the scale needed for mass market adoption without the loss of the incredible passion that convinced me to back the project. I haven't heard or seen anything to the contrary so until I do we are fully committed to supporting the Rift."

Star Citizen is currently due to launch in full sometime in 2015.

Martin Gaston is a news editor at GameSpot, and you can follow him on Twitter @squidmania

Got a news tip or want to contact us directly?

"We see this as a technology that will influence every game and every platform."

Sweeney went as far to say that virtual reality technology, like the Facebook-owned Oculus Rift or Sony's Project Morpheus, are going to revolutionize the world in a more meaningful way than smartphones did.

"It's technology that I think will completely change the world," Sweeney said. "I think It's going to be a bigger phenomenon than smartphones. You have to put it in perspective and realize we're in maybe the [first-generation] iPhone stage right now where you have this really cool device, but it has some real flaws that prevents it from being a pervasive device for everyone.

Recalling the decision to make The Elder Scrolls Online subscription-based instead of free-to-play, Hines said it was a "mutual" choice between publisher Bethesda and developer Zenimax Online Studios.

Though Hines said he's feeling some trepidation around the decision to make The Elder Scrolls Online a subscription-based game, he ultimately believes that "it's the right decision for the right reasons." The Elder Scrolls Online's success or failure will come down to the game making a strong enough argument to lead players to pay $15 month beyond the free 30 days, Hines said.

"If we're providing the kind of content people want to see where they're like 'This is awesome, I'm having a blast, this new stuff is totally worth it and I'm having fun', then the subscription totally works," he said. "If we're putting out stuff that doesn't make a case for it then we have a problem on our hands and we have failed to meet that value proposition."

Hines stressed that it's not the distinction between free-to-play vs. paid that determines an MMO's success or failure, but rather whether or not players feel they are getting their money's worth. If no, then they have a problem with it," he said.

MMOs like Star Wars: The Old Republic and Lord of the Rings Online started out with a subscription model and later transitioned to free-to-play. Xbox boss Phil Harrison told Edge in a new interview that Microsoft's stance that it will review publishing agreements on a case-by-case basis is not changing in the immediate future.

Microsoft's indie program, ID@Xbox, has drawn the praise of many developers, but some see the launch parity clause as thorny issue. "I can only speak for us personally, but simultaneously shipping is pretty challenging; you need a little bit more time and a bigger team," Super Time Force developer Capybara Games president Nathan Vella told the site.
