Shaq Fu is coming back. Organizers today launched a $450,000 Indiegogo campaign for Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn, a sequel to the 1994 2D fighting game. The game is coming to PC for $30, though other platforms are being considered as well.

"This time we won't FU it up!," developer Big Deez Productions said on the Indiegogo website.

Big Deez Productions is a new studio staffed by developers who worked on franchises like Halo, Max Payne, Battlefield, Killzone, and Street Fighter, among others.

"We are in partnership with the man, Shaquille O'Neal, an avid gamer himself. We got tired of bowing to the monolithic men with the money and wanted to work with people who care about the quality of the product," the developers said. "We are people with passion that intend to make solid, addictive, kick ass games, without a whiff of BS."

O'Neal himself is quoted in the game's campaign video as saying, "Alright, I admit it. The first Shaq Fu was [thumbs-down motion] terrible [stabs self with fake sword]. Wait until you see the graphics on this one. I'm back."

Why launch a crowdfunding campaign when O'Neal obviously has the means to fund the game himself? "The purpose of bringing the game to the public is to see how much interest there is in becoming Shaq's partner and in seeing the game happen," developers said.

O'Neal is investing "a lot" of his own time and money into the project, as are developers at Big Deez Productions, they said. Unlike Kickstarter, Indiegogo is not all-or-nothing, so the developers get to keep all funds raised through the campaign. 5 percent of all profits for Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn will go to the Boys and Girls Club of America.

As for the game itself, Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn is described as "Streets of Rage meets Street Fighter meets Devil May Cry." You'll play as O'Neal and learn "hundreds" of moves and battle techniques which you'll use against "thousands" of enemies. The game also will include "cool finishing moves," a co-op mode, and a head-to-head mode.

Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn also includes destructible environments, power-ups, and a progression system. There's also a campaign story "worthy of an Oscar" where you'll battle against the "villain for the ages" Black Star Ninja. Be sure to check out the Indiegogo campaign for a full list of Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn features.

If you back the game at $15, you'll get a digital copy of the game, which will rise in price to $30 at launch. Supporting the project at $25 gets you a copy of the game and every piece of DLC released for the game throughout its entire lifetime. Moving up the ladder, paying $400 gets you access to the game's launch party in either Los Angeles or New York City, while giving $15,000 means you'll be able to play basketball with Shaq at his home. Pay $25,000 and you'll get to have a two-hour dinner with Shaq.

Finally, Big Deez Productions laid out a roadmap of stretch goals that includes support for platforms like Xbox 360, PlayStation, Wii U, 3DS, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. (It's important to connect to Xbox Live because your console will need the latest system update, which contains the newest controller software. If you've connected recently, your Xbox One is probably already up to date, but you should connect anyway just to be sure. If your console needs an update, you'll be prompted to install one.)

Plug the Stereo Headset Adapter into the bottom of your controller.

Plug in a headset (a headset must be plugged in so the adapter will turn on).

Plug the big end of the included USB cable into the port on the side of the console.

Instructions to install the update should automatically be displayed. Follow the instructions, and don't disconnect the USB cable while the update is in progress. (The process can take up to 3 minutes.)

When the update is complete, unplug the USB cable. If you have additional controllers to update, you can connect them now, one at a time, select the Update another button on the screen, and then follow the steps.

Press the Xbox button on the wireless controller to turn it on. Your controller is now up-to-date, and you're ready to use your Xbox One Stereo Headset Adapter.

The controller update arrives alongside the Xbox One March system update, which adds a refined (not terrible) Party Chat mode and new multiplayer functionality.

Microsoft is also hinting that future Xbox One updates will enable support for external storage drives.

Thu, 06 Mar 2014 06:33:00 -0800 http://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-one-introduces-a-manual-software-update-for-your-controller/1100-6418144/ http://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-one-external-storage-aims-to-be-open/1100-6418143/

Though Microsoft's plans for external storage support on the Xbox One remain up in the air, director of product planning Albert Penello said today that the goal is to make it "open."

"Haven't landed on the specifics. Some fans were miffed by this report, saying Guerrilla Games and Sony hoodwinked them.

Guerrilla Games explained today that it uses a technique called "temporal reprojection" to combine pixels and motion vectors from multiple lower-resolution frames as a means to reconstruct a full 1080p image.

"If native means that every part of the pipeline is 1080p then this technique is not native," producer Poria Torkan said. "Games often employ different resolutions in different parts of their rendering pipeline. Most games render particles and ambient occlusion at a lower resolution, while some games even do all lighting at a lower resolution. This is generally still called native 1080p. The technique used in Killzone: Shadow Fall goes further and reconstructs half of the pixels from past frames."

Torkan said Guerrilla Games is aware of the community's "degree of investment" on this matter and that the conventional terminology may be "too vague" to effectively explain what's actually happening under the hood. He said Guerrilla Games will "do our best" to be more precise with its use of language in the future when addressing its development techniques.

If you're interested in the technical minutiae of the technology and techniques behind Killzone: Shadow Fall, be sure to read Torkan's full blog post. "Fabulous, fabulous product and [it] did extremely well. It did, I think, suck dollars out of the old-generation software market."

"We expect that market to be challenged just because of the transitions to the new generation and I think it was extra-challenged based on that release," he added. Contrary to popular belief, series creator Hideo Kojima has said that the name didn't actually come about from Escape from New York star Snake Plissken.

Kojima wrote on Twitter to explain the code name Snake in the original Metal Gear. "The reason I used Snake as code name in MG was Snake was the most appropriate symbol of living thing that hides his presence and sneaks without any noise."

"The reason I didn't make any specific snake like cobra, anaconda, viper was because the protagonist is the player," Kojima explained. And what about Solid? "The reason I use Solid was to give opposite impression of soft image," he said.

Moving on to the other Snake characters in the series, Kojima first explained the thinking behind Solid Snake's cloned brother Liquid Snake in 1998's iconic Metal Gear Solid, created from the DNA of Big Boss--known in prequel title Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater as Naked Snake.

"Like of all endings of any series are, the appearance of strongest enemy was a must in MGS. It's Snake who can surpass the Snake. Thus I brought about 'clone'. Solid vs Liquid. That is MGS."

Kojima also went on to explain the naming behind Solidus Snake in 2001's Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.

"As to develop sequel, the 3rd snake was needed," he said. "Since both Solid & Liquid express state, means same true state. Naturally the next would be gas, but gas snake is like gas human, not handsome name."

"So I borrowed from physics terms of "solidus/liquidus". Solidus is not state but implies the boundary of liquid and solid."

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes will be released on March 18. Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, & Technology conference in San Francisco, EA chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen said, "At some point [Microsoft and Sony] will most likely bring those prices down, which could expand the marketplace for old-generation software. ... I'm guessing it's probably late in the year or maybe even after next Christmas. I don't know; they've not told us what their plans are but it's probably not any time real soon."

And in case you were hoping that EA might change their stance on free-to-play mobile gaming, Jorgensen reiterated EA's stance on the importance of free-to-play mobile games. "On the mobile side, that business is growing extremely fast globally, and almost all of that mobile business is done in a free-to-play model. For those who aren't familiar with that: you get the game for free, download it onto your mobile device, and then as you play you're given opportunities to pay for different things along the way and monetize the game that way.

"I think that model's here to stay. I don't see that there's a paid download model that really lasts much longer, and all of our games are focused on that free-to-play mentality."

Although EA ran into some controversy recently among hardcore gamers with the microtransaction model in free-to-play mobile game Plants vs. Zombies 2 and negative comments from game designer Peter Molynuex regarding the mobile version of Dungeon Keeper, EA is still looking to expand that payment strategy to other games soon. Jorgen said they plan to use their intellectual properties (IP) like FIFA and Madden "to leverage the mobile business with that IP."

He said, "It'll be different than the IP that you see on a console. It's a different style of gameplay, typically people are playing with one finger or two fingers on a mobile device. So it'll be extensions of that IP, but IP that we're very comfortable with, that we know well, and that we know that the consumers love. And we think that's a huge growth driver for us in the future."

Justin Haywald is a senior editor at GameSpot, and you can follow him on Twitter @JustinHaywald

Got a news tip or want to contact us directly?

But owners will also have to do a bit of tinkering to get it working properly.

Microsoft has detailed a 7-step guide to installing the controller update:

Make sure your console is on and you're signed in and connected to Xbox Live.
