Far Cry 4 Weapons Showcase Is Brutal

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 02 Oktober 2014 | 23.26

Ubisoft Montreal has begun to flaunt the explosive arsenal of weapons in its upcoming open-world FPS, Far Cry 4.

A new gore-riddled trailer provides an outline of some of the game's most lethal instruments, and the ample opportunities in utilising them in creative and fiendish fashion.

The video features an SMG, a machine gun, an P416 assault rifle, a flamethrower, an auto-crossbow, and countless virtual cadavers that can collectively help desensitise genuinely horrific ways of dying.

For the more strategic-minded, mortars have been introduced, allowing players to attack entire villages. There's also a kukri blade that offers some truly disgusting close-up kills, and animal bait to lure natural predators towards foes. Oh, and there's a flamethrower.

Anyway, Ubisoft has set a Far Cry 4 release date for November 18 across PS4, PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. If it's anything near as good as Far Cry 3, it could be a Game of the Year contender.

For those who watched the video above and just can't get enough of death and carnage, there's also videos of weaponised elephants.

Stardock Reveals New Fantasy 4X Game Sorcerer King

Sins of a Solar Empire and Galactic Civilizations developer Stardock today announced a brand new PC fantasy 4X game called Sorcerer King. You don't have to wait long at all to play the new strategy game, as an in-development version is available now via Steam Early Access.

Stardock calls Sorcerer King a "new breed" of strategy game where the player must put a stop to a "single, overwhelmingly powerful enemy" who is out to destroy the world. You'll do this by recruiting champions, crafting artifacts, and expanding your kingdom.

The Early Access version of Sorcerer King is available today on Steam for $34, which is a 15 percent discount compared to the $40 it will cost at launch.

In Sorcerer King, you can "explore a vast and detailed world," seeking out treasure and adventure in a "monster-infested wilderness." The game's "hundreds" of quests were written by Cracked.com's Chris Bucholz. Eventually, you'll advance to the Shadow Gate and ultimately battle the Sorcerer King himself in a final showdown.

Stardock says Sorcerer King will be different than traditional 4X titles, like Alpha Centauri, in that the player and his enemy will play by an "entirely different set of rules."

"The Sorcerer King doesn't need to crush your empire, he just needs to destroy the magical shards in order to enact his doomsday plan," Stardock says in a statement. "Defending the shards, not careful plotting toward economic victory, is the only way to save the world."

Stardock VP Derek Paxton added that he believes Sorcerer King represents a "new model" for 4X games. "Instead of competing against equal players, you're behind the eight ball trying to stop the Sorcerer King and his minions from destroying the world. It's strategy gaming under a guillotine," he says.

The full version of Sorcerer King is expected to launched in early 2015. A host of additional content is planned for the game, including more factions and further characters to play as. In addition, though the Early Access version only has few maps (for the purposes of testing, Stardock says), many more "hand-crafted" maps will be added to the game over time.

For much more on Sorcerer King, check back soon for GameSpot's in-depth interview with Stardock CEO Brad Wardell. You can also see a gallery of Sorcerer King images below.

Assassin's Creed-Themed Mechs Heading to a Fellow Ubisoft Game

Assassin's Creed is Ubisoft's crown jewel, and the company is now putting it to use to promote another one of its games. AirMech Arena, an RTS game for Xbox 360, received an update today that incorporates the most renowned aspect of Assassin's Creed: its mechs.

Arena is a free-to-play mech game originally released on 360 at the end of July. (There's also a PC version available simply called AirMech.) Today's update is its first since then, and it improves matchmaking, changes the lobby system, and fixes bugs, among other things. You can read the full patch notes here.

More interestingly, it also introduces the Assassin's Creed-themed Novi Aquilus Neo mech (pictured above and below, courtesy of Polygon). Although it might not directly resemble anything from Assassin's Creed (what with those games primarily taking place in the distant past), it does feature an assassin-like cloak ability.

Also new is the Abstergo Saucer, which in the game is said to be built by Abstergo Industries, the primary antagonists of the Assassin's Creed series. In addition, new Assassin's Creed-themed pets are now available: the Apple of Eden, the DNA Cube vial, and the Spirit Eagle.

Arena has reportedly attracted more than 1 million players so far, though we have no indication of how many of those players tried the game once and haven't been back. You can try it for yourself right now for free.

Play Shadow of Mordor and You'll Realize It's Not Assassin's Creed, Dev Says

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor developer Monolith Productions was worried about how some people were comparing the Lord of the Rings game to the Assassin's Creed series. This is because, lead designer Bob Roberts says, the developer always knew that Shadow of Mordor could stand on its own.

"I don't know if vindicated is the right word, because we always knew what it feels like to play," Roberts told IGN. "Once people get their hands on it, they stop worrying about the comparisons and it totally feels like its own thing."

The Shadow of Mordor comparisons to Assassin's Creed didn't just come from fans or the media. Former Ubisoft developer Charles Randall even accused Monolith and Warner Bros. of using animations and code from Assassin's Creed II. "Seriously, can someone tell me how Assassin's Creed [II] code and assets are in this Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor game?" Randall wrote on Twitter earlier this year.

Roberts went on to say that Shadow of Mordor's Nemesis system, arguably the game's biggest standout feature, ultimately helped the game separate itself from the pack.

"There's so much new going on there thanks to the Nemesis system and the way we combined all the elements to make the world come to life," he said. "So we never really got that [Assassin's Creed comparison] criticism once people had a chance to play it. As soon as we started showing it, it became clear we had nothing to worry about."

Further, the interview touches on another potentially controversial topic, that being the way in which Shadow of Mordor takes creative liberties with J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy. Some might not think that the game's Ranger/Wraith hybrid hero Talion would be approved by Tolkien himself (such characters did not exist in Middle-earth, after all), but Roberts said Mordor overall is respectful of the iconic author's work.

"We did the very best job we could do as die-hard Tolkien fans ourselves and we have a lot of people paying close attention to make sure we're as authentic as we can be," he said. "There's always going to be different interpretations as it's big, complicated stuff, but we're doing the thing that we think is the most authentic to his work, themes. and ideas. He looks at death, deathlessness, the corruption of power, and so on."

Also in the interview, Roberts revealed that Monolith was able to boost Shadow of Mordor's frame rate on Xbox One thanks to the new developer tools Microsoft released in June.

Shadow of Mordor launched September 30 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. The game has been generally well-received, though we won't have an idea about how well it's selling. For more on Shadow of Mordor, check out GameSpot's review and what other critics are saying.

The lead characters in the Angry Birds movie

We don't know anything about the plot for the Angry Birds movie, but it's being written by veteran scribe Jon Vitti, who is perhaps best known for his work on The Simpsons. He wrote the famous "Mr. Plow" episode, among others.

The Angry Birds movie, which hits theaters on July 1, 2016, is Rovio's first stab at a feature film. The studio has worked on smaller-sized video productions, however, as it is behind the Angry Birds Toons animated series, which has tallied more than three billion views to date.

The film is produced by visual effects and animation studio Sony Pictures Imageworks, and will be distributed around the world by Sony Pictures. Animated movie veterans Fergal Reilly (Spider-Man 2, The Iron Giant) and Clay Kaytis (Wreck-It Ralph, Tangled) are attached to direct.

Nintendo Taking Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS on Tour to College Football Games

If the demo version of Super Smash Bros. for 3DS isn't enough for you, or you simply want to try out the Wii U version of the upcoming brawler, you may want to head to a college football game sometime in the next two months. Nintendo will be bringing both games to a select number of games for tailgaters to try out over the next nine weeks.

Known as The Tailgate Tour, there are nine stops on Nintendo's trip, beginning with the LSU-Auburn game this coming Saturday, October 4. It'll then head to a major game each Saturday throughout October and November.

The Wii U game will be available only in demo form, and will be there to "pit fans of the rival school[s] against one another." Nintendo will keep track of which team's fans come out on top and post the results on Facebook, subjecting the losers to endless amounts of ridicule. The 3DS version, meanwhile, will be there to let "friends settle their scores."

The full schedule for the tour is as follows:

  • Oct. 4: LSU at Auburn
  • Oct. 11: Penn State at Michigan
  • Oct. 18: Georgia vs. Arkansas
  • Oct. 25: Alabama at Tennessee
  • Nov. 1: Florida vs. Georgia
  • Nov. 8: Alabama at LSU
  • Nov. 15: Florida State at Miami
  • Nov. 22: Louisville at Notre Dame
  • Nov. 29: Michigan at Ohio State

The 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. launches this Friday, October 3. (You can check out our review here.) The Wii U version, meanwhile, is still slated for release "this holiday season," Nintendo reiterated today, though it continues to offer no more specificity than that.

The Crew Xbox One/PS4 Beta Launches Today, Progress Doesn't Transfer to Full Game

Racing fans eager to try out the current-gen console version of The Crew will have the opportunity to begin doing so today. This is a real, technical beta, though, which means you shouldn't expect any of your progress to carry over to the full game.

Speaking with The Examiner about the beta, creative director Julian Gerighty was asked about whether you'll be able to take your beta accomplishments with you. "I don't think so, no, [progress won't be saved]," he responded.

The closed beta starting today is not the game's first. Like those previous betas, the purpose of this latest one is not merely to promote the game. "This is the thing, all of our betas so far have been technical betas," Gerighty said. "They are not marketing betas. They are not there for anything else except for learning how we can make the experience better when we launch."

With this not being the first beta for The Crew, Gerighty offered a friendly suggestion to those who have already spent a lot of time with the game: Don't burn yourself out. "I'd hate for people to do three betas and not have anything to look forward to in the final game," he said. "The game is good, don't get me wrong and the last thing I want to do is send a message of 'do not play the console beta.' Please play it, but it's a technical beta and you shouldn't expect everything to be unlocked and transfer to the full game."

That wasn't the only reference he made to the fact that the beta is a limited slice of the game. He also stated, "There are lots of functions that probably won't be turned on." That's to be expected, of course, but the beta sounds fairly extensive. You can read our impressions of an earlier beta on PC here.

The Crew is an open-world racing game that lets you drive across a virtual version of the United States. It's headed to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox 360 (but not PlayStation 3) on November 11.
