Sony refunds Final Fantasy XIV customers as servers remain unstable

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 05 September 2013 | 23.26

The bungled relaunch of Final Fantasy XIV Online: A Realm Reborn has seen Sony fully refund customers who purchased the PlayStation Network version of the game on August 27 or August 28.

Affected customers will see a full refund to their wallet, the entitlements for the game reset, and the game reappearing in their download list. "We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience," says Sony.

The servers for Final Fantasy XIV have been overloaded since the game's relaunch a week ago, leading Square Enix to suspend digital sales in an attempt to balance the heavy load.

Square Enix has repeatedly apologised to users finding it impossible to play the MMO, and game director Naoki Yoshida has taken to the company's forums to explain that he expected far fewer players after FFXIV's first iteration flopped.

"The night following the announcement of our plans to temporarily limit sales of the download version," said Yoshida. "A Realm Reborn recorded upwards of 218,000 concurrent connections. This is in spite of the fact that the peak login times for separate regions around the world arrive at differing intervals. We estimate that without time zone differences, the total number of concurrent connections would number anywhere from 300,000 to 350,000."

"As many of you know, this is the second launch for Final Fantasy XIV--something unprecedented in the MMORPG market. Considering the outcome of our first launch, our sales estimates for this one were decidedly conservative, as we believed that there would be a more gradual rise in users over the opening weeks and months."

"Instead, to our pleasant surprise, we experienced tremendous support from a great number of players who were eager to get into the game from day one. To ensure that these players, once logged in, were able to play in a stable environment, we were required to implement login restrictions which kept server population near maximum capacity without exceeding those numbers."

"The fact that we had to implement these restrictions is a direct result of my inaccurate sales and login estimates, and as producer, I must accept complete responsibility for this misstep. Each and every player who has been affected has my deepest apologies."

Yoshida added that each World server in FFXIV can handle a maximum of 5000 concurrent connections, and that a higher amount of players leads to server crashes and errors. Square Enix has chosen to limit logins to give the servers room to breathe, and Yoshida says that the team is monitoring the Worlds "24 hours a day" in an attempt to strike the right balance.

Logins are more likely to be restricted between 21:00 and 00:00, Yoshida added, which is the peak login time for the game.

Earlier this week Square Enix offered an additional seven days of free play time as compensation for customers affected by the outages.

Best Buy holding Xbox One, PS4 launch events

Gamers who just can't wait to get their hands on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 can attend midnight launch events at Best Buy this November, the company has announced.

Best Buy said (via CNET) that it will begin selling PlayStation 4 consoles and Xbox One systems at 12:01 a.m. on November 15 and November 22, respectively in North America.

A list of participating Best Buy locations is available on the company's website for the PS4 and Xbox One.

Square Enix offers compensation for Final Fantasy XIV server woes

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Selasa, 03 September 2013 | 23.26

Square Enix has offered players of relaunched MMO Final Fantasy XIV Online: A Realm Reborn an additional seven days of free play time to compensate for the problems caused by the game's excessively strained servers.

The revamped MMO has been rendered unplayable for many players since its launch last week, as Square Enix misjudged how many people would be interested in playing the game.

Players yet to redeem their trial will be eligible for the additional seven days if they register before September 9, Square Enix adds.

The beleaguered servers will be taken offline from 17:00 PDT on September 3 to 03:00 PDT on September 4 for Square Enix to perform maintenance. The company says the work will increase the amount of available Words, increase the amount of logins available on each server, and reduce stress on its Duty Finder servers.

"Because login and character creation restrictions have hindered our ability to provide quality service, all Final Fantasy 14 service accounts will receive an additional seven days of free play time," Square Enix said.

"Furthermore, users who have yet to enter their registration codes will receive an additional seven-day trial should they register before 11.59 pm (PDT) on September 9, 2013. Moving forward, we will continue monitoring the servers to ensure that quality service and support are provided in a timely manner."

Xbox One wasn't rushed, says Microsoft

Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb has spoken out to defend the Xbox One against claims that its development was rushed to match the PlayStation 4.

Writing on Reddit, Hryb said this is not the case, though he did admit that Microsoft has faced some "challenges" in the past few months.

"The Xbox One program has been in development for years, so calling it 'Rushed' is incorrect," Hryb said. "Did we have a few challenges between May and August? Sure. But we are working on our own schedule--not anyone else's."

"At Gamescom, every game in the Xbox booth was running on final Xbox One hardware. Every. Single. One," he added. "That would paint a very different take on the being 'rushed.'"

Separately, Microsoft chief product officer Marc Whitten told IGN that downloaded games will not be able to be pre-loaded prior to release, though he said the company will do "much more" in this area moving forward.

Steam allows players to pre-load certain games so users can begin playing immediately at 12:01 a.m. on the day of release.

Whitten also addressed the Xbox One working as a Windows Media Center Extender, saying the console "isn't a native Media Center Extender." He added that Microsoft will "continue to work to enable more ways for everyone to get the television they want over the life of the program."

Currently, the Xbox 360 can be used as a Windows Media Center Extender, allowing users stream media from a PC to their console.

The Xbox One launches in November. Microsoft said recently at PAX that it believes the console is worth $100 more than the PlayStation 4.

Sony to launch own VR headset for PlayStation 4 - Report

The next chapter in Sony's next-gen technology strategy might come in the form of a custom virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 4, reports have claimed.

Sony's virtual reality plans for the PlayStation 4, reported by both Eurogamer and CVG, are said to involve hardware technology similar to the Oculus Rift headset, which has been a source of intense industry interest since its barnstorming Kickstarter success in August 2012. A consumer version of the Oculus Rift has yet to be dated.

A VR version of Evolution Studios' PS4 launch racer Driveclub is said to be in an internal prototype stage, with players able to experience a VR cockpit. Based in Liverpool, England, Evolution Studios is also close to Sony's Worldwide Studios Stereoscopic 3D team.

CVG says that the Sony VR headset will be unveiled at Tokyo Game Show later this month, while Eurogamer says Sony will unveil the product in 2014, after the release of the PlayStation 4. Both sites report that the company originally planned to show the headset at Gamescom 2013 last week, but those plans were scrapped at the last minute.

Tokyo Games Show 2013 will run from September 19 through September 22.

As a company, Sony has pre-existing experience with VR. Sony currently sells the HMZ-T2 in Europe and Canada for £999, with the headset designed for use with 3D games and movies. The HMZ-T2 features two 720p OLED screens and incorporates a 5.1 surround sound system.

Sony's gaming VR headset will be sold separately from the PlayStation 4 hardware, CVG adds.

The PlayStation 4 will launch on November 15 in North America for $399, and on November 29 in Europe for €399/£349.

A Sony representative declined to comment.

Guild Wars 2: The Big Gets Bigger

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Minggu, 01 September 2013 | 23.26

Kevin VanOrd looks into Guild Wars 2's future and reminisces about its first successful year.

It was a close election. The ballots were cast in a race that pit a classless business tycoon against a smooth-talking entrepreneur. When the votes were counted and a victor announced, the unexpected consequences descended swiftly. Violence was unleashed, and the world was worse for the wear.

No, this wasn't an earthly election. These candidates were vying for a spot on Lion's Arch's Captain's Council. Every adventurer in Guild Wars 2 got to cast their vote, and ultimately appointed sky pirate Ellen Kiel to the post. Kiel kept her campaign promises--but there were hidden motives to her candidacy that players weren't prepared for. What might have happened had they elected Evon Gnashblade instead? We may never know what kind of madness developer ArenaNet planned to visit upon Tyria, though Guild Wars 2 Content Designer Mike Zadorojny tells me the development team was prepared for either scenario. For now, we can only dream of what may have been.

Needless to say, it been a busy year for both ArenaNet and Guild Wars 2's committed player base. If you take a glance to the left, you get an idea of just how successful the massively multiplayer online game has been since its launch a year ago. Among its many triumphs, Guild Wars 2 is reportedly the fastest-selling online role-playing game in the West of all time, and has surpassed 3.5 million in sales. Not bad for a game angling for share in market dominated by the World of Warcraft juggernaut.

What keeps all these players invested in this world? After all, repeating endgame content can only compel you for so long before you're ready to move on to something fresh, even when powerful loot is up for grabs. Luckily, ArenaNet's living world teams--four of them!--have your back. ArenaNet continues to add mini-dungeons called fractals; events like the hourly invasions of Scarlet's minions keep you on your toes; and episodic story content lands every two weeks, with many of these new narrative arcs bringing new context to older content and bringing back returning characters you may have supposed have left Tyria for good.

But all that is the past. What about the future? It's fine to celebrate an anniversary, but a strong relationship--even the one between a game and its players--requires lots of ongoing focus and hard work.

ArenaNet is outlining specific plans for the future this weekend at PAX Prime, but I was lucky enough to grab the attention of a few folks on the development team, including Crystal Reid, Ben Newell, and Devon Carver, who spilled some advance information on what you can expect to see from Guild Wars 2 over the next few months. Some of this future content Zadorojny had already hinted at when he told me that the game's scope would be getting grander and more complex, in the same way Ascalonian Catacombs had. Fortunately, Reid filled in some of the blanks for me. Specifically, the battle against Tequatl the Sunless will require 80 players or more, and the encounter itself will demand more from adventurers facing this undead dragon. You'll need to watch for more pools of poison on the ground, for instance, and Tequatl will occasionally soar away, giving you the chance to prepare turrets for his return. However, if you fail at your task, the flying lizard will trigger a massive deluge that can drown rambunctious warriors.

More intriguing, however, are ArenaNet's plans for player-versus-player encounters. Currently, world-versus-world combat doesn't offer any long-term goal beyond weekly world rankings. Soon, however, WvW combat will be grouped into seasons; European servers will be grouped into three leagues of nine worlds each, while North American servers will be grouped into two of 12 each. Over several weeks, every world will play every other world in their league at least once and awarded points for their performance. At the end of the season, participants will receive awards based on how their world fared in the season standings.

Guild Wars 2 had a big year, but ArenaNet wants the upcoming year to be even bigger. It's only appropriate, then, that "bigness" is the operative word for what's to come: bigger bosses, bigger groups, bigger ideas. In the meanwhile, I propose taking a big swig of the beverage of your choice in honor of the ever-evolving Guild Wars 2.

Cerny: Full hardware capabilities of PS4 may take 'three to four years' to be harnessed

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 28 Agustus 2013 | 23.26

PlayStation 4 lead architect Mark Cerny believes that while PlayStation 4 developers are already quickly adapting to content creation for the new system, the real customisation and utilisation of the machine's true power won't be until "year three or year four of the console".

In an interview with Polygon during Gamescom, Cerny outlined the need to create an obvious visual gap between the capabilities of current and next-generation systems.

"We set our target at 10 times the PlayStation 3's performance, because that's what we felt we needed to achieve in order to differentiate the titles," Cerny told the website. "When I did pitches to developers about the hardware, I talked about what I call the Akihabara test. Akihabara is an electronics district in Tokyo, it's just full of stores where you can buy just about anything you plug into a wall socket. I knew that at some point, there'd be out on the sidewalk a PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, and they might even be showing the same game, and the PlayStation 4 had to be powerful enough that when people walked by, they had to look at the PlayStation 4 and say, 'Wow, I have to have that.'

"I believe we are at that level of performance," Cerny said. "I mean, the million pre-orders we have is, I think, speaking to that."

Cerny went on to say that while the PS4's new architecture is already familiar to develop for given its PC similarities, it will still be three to four years before the real capabilities of the system are identified and harnessed.

"It's a supercharged PC architecture, so you can use it as if it were a PC with unified memory," he said. "Much of what we're seeing with the launch titles is that usage; it's very, very quick to get up to speed if that's how you use it. But at the same time, then you're not taking advantage of all the customisation that we did in the GPU. I think that really will play into the graphical quality and the level of interaction in the worlds in, say, year three or year four of the console."

The PlayStation 4 goes on sale on November 15 in North America, and November 29 for Europe, the UK, and Australia. The device will launch in 32 countries globally this year.
